2018 Mobile Mammography Screening The George Washington Breast Cancer Center will make its final visit to NIH for our 2018 Mammography Screening on Thursday, November 8th outside of Bldg. 10 in Lot H. All female NIH employees, their families, contractors, visiting scientists and others associated with NIH are eligible to participate. NIH R&W Montgomery Aquatic Center (MAC) Corporate Membership Eligibility for MAC Corporate Memberships apply to any NIH staff member who has both a valid NIH ID badge, current NIH email address, and a current R&W membership. This offer doesn’t extend to family members. MAC memberships under this promotion are $150 (savings of over $200), paid by check or cashier’s check. Show Some Love at the 2018 NIH CFC Kickoff & Opening Ceremony The National Center for Advancing Translational Sciences (NCATS) is leading the 2018 NIH Combined Federal Campaign (CFC). The NIH CFC Kickoff will be held on Tues., October 9th from 11am - 1pm in front of Bldg. 1. Join NIH Leadership and special guests in support of the CFC and Show Some Love to your favorite CFC charity. There will be music, charities you can support, the NIH Community Market, plus great food for sale from top DC-area food trucks including El Pollo Submarine, Swizzler’s Gourmet Hot Dogs, Reggae Flava, IceGreen Snowballs, and Ben & Jerry’s. The CFC is one of the largest and most successful workplace fundraising drives in the world and NIH is excited to kick off its 2018 season of giving. This event will take place rain or shine under a tent.

Trick-Or-Treat With the CFC Stop by the Bldg. 31A Patio on Wednesday, October 31 from 11am – 1pm for a hair-raisingly good time with food, prizes, and treats! Come in costume! Be scary, be silly, be unique but above all else be creative…especially if you want to win a prize! The “fangtastic” festivities will include trick-or-treating at the charity tables while learning how the organizations help people in our community and come out for a bite from local food vendors including Chix ‘n Stix, and Captain Cookie and the Milkman. Also visit Parti Pics Photo Booth and take pictures in costume or with props they provide.

Halloween Candy Needed for Patient Trick-or-Treat Program Each year the Recreation Therapy staff takes pediatric patients and children of the adult patients to the participating units in the Clinical Center for Trick-or-Treating. This activity keeps the Halloween spirit alive and puts smiles on the children’s faces while they are here in the hospital. NIH employees are encouraged to bring individually wrapped candy to the 1st Floor Playroom in Bldg. 10 by Tuesday, October 23rd. We will deliver the candy in time for the “spooktacular” event!

Bite-Size Eyeballs Whip up these cheesy pastry puffs with just four ingredients, then make each pair come alive with slices of cucumber and olive, and squiggles of tasty Sriracha.

INGREDIENTS • 1/2 c. (1 stick) Unsalted butter • Kosher salt and pepper • 1 c. all-purpose flour • 4 large eggs • 4 oz. Guryère cheese, coarsely grated • Cream cheese, Persian cucumbers, and pimientostuffed olives, for decorating • Sriacha or ketchup, for decorating

DIRECTIONS Heat oven to 425°F. Line 2 large baking sheets with parchment paper.

Place butter, 1 cup water, and ½ tsp salt in a medium saucepan and bring to a boil over medium heat. Add flour and stir vigorously until mixture comes together and looks smooth and shiny, about 1 minute. Continue stirring for 1 minute, then transfer mixture to a large bowl and let sit until no longer hot to the touch, about 15 minutes.

Add eggs, 1 at a time, and beat, using a wooden spoon, until mixture comes back together and is smooth. Add ¼ tsp pepper and cheese.

Using a 1-Tbsp cookie scoop, drop small balls 2 in. apart on prepared baking sheet. Bake for 10 minutes, then rotate the pans top to bottom and front to back. Reduce heat to 350°F and continue baking until light golden brown and set, 12 to 17 minutes more. Transfer to a wire rack to cool.

To make eyeballs, use cream cheese as glue to place slices of cucumber and olives on top of each puff. Squeeze sriracha or ketchup into lines around the sides.

NEI 5K for 50: A Walk/Run to Celebrate NEI’s 50th Anniversary The National Eye Institute (NEI) will host a 5K on October 24th in commemoration of its 50th anniversary. The course goes around the perimeter of the NIH campus (total distance of 3.25 miles). Participants will require their PIV card to re-enter the campus. The start/finish line is in front of Bldg. 1. Festivities and a group warm-up kick off at 11:30am with the first start at 12:15pm. Get your vision screened and try out the new NEI virtual reality eye disease simulator! Food will be available for purchase from local food trucks.

Fall Research Festival and “Taste of” Luncheon The Technical Sales Association (TSA) will host the 2018 Fall NIH Research Festival Tent show in Lot 10H outside of Bldg. 10 South on Thursday, November 1st and Friday, November 2nd. Homebuyer Education and Counseling is a Great Step for Aspiring Homeowners The desire for homeowner-ship in America remains high. In a 2017 NeighborWorks America survey, 93 percent of respondents said homeownership is important, very important or the most important. Homeownership is important to our economy, our families and our communities and a key vehicle for wealth accumulation. Census data cited in the 2017 National Association of Real Estate Brokers (NAREB) State of Housing in Black America report says that 69 percent of an American house-hold’s net worth is attributable to the net equity in their home. Becoming a homeowner is an exciting journey, and preparation is a key to success. Home-buyer education and counseling agencies are important resources to help aspiring homeowners prepare for and navigate the homebuying process to be-come sustainable homeowners. Through education and understanding of what to expect, homebuyers can get in a home and be successful homeowners over their lifetime. Homebuyer counseling offers one-on-one sessions with a HUD-approved counselor who tailors interactions to the prospective homebuyer’s situation and homeownership needs. Counseling helps prospective homebuyers gain confidence and information needed to take the next step toward buying a home with activities that include budgeting, identifying credit challenges and guidance to improve their credit score, debt reduction strategies and helping to determine afford-ability based on income and debt. Counseling also helps to dispel common myths about obtaining a mortgage loan, like “a 20 percent down payment is required to own a home.” That is not true and holds many homebuyers back from making the step forward and actually applying for a mortgage.

Homebuyer education focuses on the basic concepts of homeownership but is not specific to a transaction. Also provided by a HUD-approved agency, topics covered in these classes include the homebuying process, how to maintain a home and the importance of good credit. Homebuyer education classes can be helpful for aspiring homeowners who have been approved for a loan but need information on better understanding the process to achieve and sustain homeownership. At Wells Fargo we believe in the value homebuyer education and counseling can bring to those seeking homeowner-ship. It’s a significant component of our $60 billion lending commitment to increase African-American homeownership by 2027. In the commitment we pledged to dedicate $15 million to support initiatives for homebuyer education and counseling for African-American families. In our first year, we have provided more than $1.8 million toward this goal in the first year. Al-Anon Provides Help for Those Involved with Substance Abuse - Al-Anon, an organization for family members of people with alcohol abuse, now welcomes family members of individuals with narcotic abuse problems to attend weekly group meetings.
