2019 Mobile Mammography Screening

The George Washington Breast Cancer Center will make its final visit to NIH for our 2019 Mammography Screening on Thursday, November 20th outside of Bldg. 10 in Lot H. All female NIH employees, their families, contractors, visiting scientists and others associated with NIH are eligible to participate. NIH R&W Kennedy Shriver Aquatic Center (KSAC) Corporate Membership

Eligibility for KSAC Corporate Memberships apply to any NIH staff member who has both a valid NIH ID badge, current NIH email address, and a current R&W membership. This offer doesn’t extend to family members. KSAC memberships under this promotion are $150 (savings of over $200), paid by check or cashier’s check. This group membership provides joiners with full access to the KSAC, ONLY. The KSAC is located at 5900 Executive Blvd; North Bethesda, MD. To join NIH employee can sign up for their membership directly at the KSAC. You must present your NIH ID badge, as well as a copy of your R&W membership registration. We suggest purchasing your R&W membership online and taking a copy of the confirmation to the KSAC. Call the KSAC at 240-777-8070 if you have questions about swim schedules, swim hours, classes, etc. This opportunity is not part of any official federal fitness program, so neither R&W, NIH, nor any other part of DHHS can take responsibility for injuries or related problems that may develop from using this facility. Use of the KSAC must also be on employee’s personal time only. Neither R&W, NIH more broadly, nor DHHS is necessarily endorsing the KSAC. Before increasing your current level of physical activity, consult with your physician. The need for medical guidance also applies to the use of saunas and whirlpools, since some medical conditions or effects of certain medications could be worsened by sudden changes in body temperature and/or fluid levels.

The R&W will be hosting its annual Holiday Bazaar on Wednesday, November 20th from 10am - 2pm in Bldg. 10 South Lobby. The bazaar will offer crafts, jewelry, art, clothes, sweets and more. Visit some of your favorite vendors and many new ones including KVZ Designs, Barbie Levy Jewelry Design, Bumbershoots by Nana, Tibet Sky Emporium, Kamaria, Sweet Paws Dog Bakery. This is a great opportunity to get some of your holiday shopping done.

Pre-Black Friday Sale at R&W Stores November 25th – 27th

The R&W gift shops will be closed on Friday, November 29th so we’re going to let you get a head start on your discounted gift buying by holding Pre-Black Friday sale at our Rockledge and Bldg. 31 R&W stores. NIH Veterans Day Celebration November 12th in Bldg. 10

The NIH Values Veterans! The National Institutes of Health (NIH) Veteran Recruitment/Retention Force (VRF) invites you to attend the 8th annual Veterans Day Celebration on Tuesday, November 12th from 11am - 2pm at the FAES Terrace in Bldg. 10. This year the event is an Open House with booths celebrating the US military service branches, OHR Division resources, the NIH Credit Union and others. Refreshments will be served. Dr. Lawrence Tabak, Principal Deputy Director of the National Institutes of Health, will provide welcome remarks to kick off the open house. Stop by to learn more from these vendors. Al-Anon Provides Help for Those Involved with Substance Abuse - Al-Anon, an organization for family members of people with alcohol abuse, now welcomes family members of individuals with narcotic abuse problems to attend weekly group meetings. Al-Anon holds two weekly group meetings; Mondays and Thursdays at noon in Bldg. 31, Rm. 1B50.

Healthy French Toast & French Toast Sticks

INGREDIENTS • 4 slices whole-grain bread or gluten free • 1 teaspoon butter, or coconut oil • 3 large farm fresh eggs • ½ teaspoon pure vanilla extract • ½ teaspoon ground cinnamon DIRECTIONS • Gently cut each slice of bread into 4 'sticks'. Set aside.

•

Preheat a griddle over medium heat. Coat with butter or coconut oil.

•

In a shallow bowl, whisk together the eggs and cinnamon.

•

Gently dip each strip of bread into the egg mixture, flipping once to coat evenly. Place on the hot griddle.

•

Cook each french toast stick for 2-3 minutes before flipping.

•

Cook an additional 2-3 minutes on the other-side until the french toast sticks are golden brown.

•

Remove from heat and enjoy! Dip in syrup or your favorite sweet dip, like yogurt!

Tuesday, December 3rd is Giving Tuesday

Since 2012, #GivingTuesday has been celebrated on the Tuesday after Thanksgiving as a global day of giving fueled by Black Friday, Small Business Saturday, and Cyber Monday.

The CFC will celebrate #GivingTuesday with an active online presence, encouraging donors to participate by giving through the campaign. Our goal is to show the country the generosity of the Federal workforce by making #GivingTuesday the biggest one-day pledge total during the entire campaign. 37th Annual Turkey Chase

The Turkey is Training. Are You? Every Thanksgiving Day for the past 36 years, thousands of runners have gathered in Bethesda to run in the Turkey Chase in support of the YMCA Youth and Family Services, YMCA Bethesda-Chevy Chase and the B-CC Rotary Club Foundation. Online registration is available by visiting www.turkeychase.com. Join in the fun and participate in the 10km Run, 2 Mile Fun Run/Walk or the 50 Meter Tot Trot. What better way to begin your family day filled with turkey than starting it with a walk! Volunteers are also needed for this event and can register online as well.

NIH Chamber Singers Present Music of the Seasons

The NIH Chamber Singers, under the direction of Dwight Brock, will celebrate its 25th anniversary with its winter concert series, Music of the Seasons. This selection of choral music will cross many styles, subjects and times including a Canon from the 15th century, a Bach Chorale from the 18th century, numerous folk songs arranged in 20th century styles and several familiar carols, “just for fun” works, as well as Hanukkah cheer to please everyone. The first concert takes place on on Thursday, December 5th in the Bldg. 10 CRC Atrium at 12:30pm. The second concert will take place at the Rockville Nursing Home (303 Adclare Rd., Rockville, MD 20850) on Tuesday, December 10th at 6pm. The next performance will be Saturday, December 14th at 3pm at the Marilyn J. Praisner/Fairland Library (14910 Old Columbia Pike, Burtonsville, MD). The final concert takes place at 6:30pm at the Twinbrook Library (202 Meadow Hall Drive, Rockville, MD) on Tuesday, December 17th. All concerts are free of charge and open to the public. NIH Philharmonia Orchestra Concert

The orchestra will be performing “Mistaken Identity” on Saturday, Dec. 7th at St. Elizabeth Church in Rockville (917 Montrose Rd. between Rockville Pike and I-270). The concert includes Berlioz - Rakoczy March, Mendelssohn - Symphony No. 3, Shostakovich - Festiva Overture, Tchaikovsky Capriccio Italien. The NIH Community Orchestra & Chorus Winter Concerts

Come enjoy a winter concert presented by the NIH Community Orchestra and Chorus. The concert will take place Sunday, December 8th at 7pm at Cedar Lane Unitarian Church, 9601 Cedar Lane, Bethesda, MD. This free performance will feature the work of Beethoven, Liszt, Rossini and William Grant Still.

This is the 24th year of the Orchestra’s performance of a holiday concert. The performance is sponsored by the NIH R&W and the NIH Charities. There are no tickets however donations are welcome to benefit the NIH Charities. Parking is free and a reception will immediately follow the concert.
