Fall into Fitness at the NIH R&W Fitness Centers! TIPS FOR A HEALTHIER THANKSGIVING Plan a post-meal walk: A brisk walk will help you burn some calories and likely put you in the right mindset to turn down a second piece of pumpkin pie! Walk around and socialize: Instead of sampling each and every appetizer before dinner, walk around and catch up with family and friends. Volunteer to help clean up: Cleaning up will also help you burn some calories! Stop eating when you’re full: Instead of seeing how much you can eat, serve yourself a small, golf-ball-size serving of everything you want—no restrictions—but have only enough to satisfy your stomach without overdoing it. Remember, Thanksgiving is one day. Done right, you won’t set yourself back too far! Plan a workout date the next morning: Instead of feeling bloated and lethargic the day after Thanksgiving, schedule a fitness date with a friend for that morning—then you have to show up! GIVE THANKS AND STAY HEALTHY! R&W NIH FITNESS & WELLBEING PROGRAM

Time to Replace Your Smoke Alarms Update to Maryland’s Smoke Alarm Law Maryland’s new smoke alarm law requires the replacement of all BATTERY-ONLY operated smoke alarms with units powered by sealed-in, 10-year long-life batteries. All smoke alarms have expiration dates. Both hard-wired and battery-operated smoke alarms need to be replaced every ten years. If your smoke alarm has not been replaced since 2006, it’s time! Smoke alarms are required to be located outside each sleeping area and on every level of your home including basements (finished or unfinished). For homes constructed since 1994, smoke alarms have been required inside all sleeping rooms. For maximum protection, fire officials recommend installing smoke alarms in sleeping rooms regardless of the year of construction. Homeowners have until January 1, 2018 to comply with the new law. Any Montgomery County homeowner requiring more info or requesting that Montgomery County Fire and Rescue Service perform a free home safety check, including a check of smoke and carbon monoxide alarms, can do so by visiting www.mcfrs.org/mcsafe or calling 311. For more info regarding this state law visit http://tinyurl.com/ycnhfnf6 and http://tinyurl.com/yaracwpr.
