Virtual Fitness Descriptions:
All levels are welcome!
Obliques Only with Ashley: Make strong obliques an obligation! Strong obliques not only support the back but aid in healthy posture. In intervals of 45 seconds of work followed by intervals of 15-second recovery, participants will execute exercises designed to strengthen the obliques and surrounding muscles. A mat is suggested.
Stretch + Strengthen with Charissa: This low-impact, gentle stretching class comes just in time for the weekend! Moving withthebreath,participantswillstretch andstrengthen thebody simultaneously! In just 30 minutes, invigorate tired and/or deconditioned muscles and joints! A fitness mat is suggested.
March Madness Tabata with Shannon: High-intensity interval training is the ultimate workout…in fact, it’s a slam dunk! Tabataisparticularlyadvantageoustothetime-crunched individual looking to shock the body into fat loss and calorie burn! In bouts of 20-second spurts of hard work, followed by 10-second recovery cycles, participants will perform exercises targeting the major and minor muscle groups. Light to heavy weights and a mat suggested.
Cardio Connected with Ashley: A low-impact, cardiovascular workout, this class is all about exercises that involve no jumping!Participantswillreceivethebenefitsofcardiotraining without compromising the joints! Bring a mat and high energy and end the week with an exhilarating fitness experience!
Functional Fitness: Focus| Squat with Shannon: Is there a proper way to squat? During this class participants will gain knowledge on correct body alignment in performing squats for exercise and daily activity. Squatting improperly can lead to low back pain and injury over time. Using light to heavy weights and a mat, prepare to execute loaded squats safely in excellent alignment.
Core on the Floor Circuit with Charissa: Circuit training involves performing 6 or moreexercises, with short rest periods between them, for a certain number of repetitions or a set duration. A total of 16 repetitions will be performed for each exercise for at least 2 rounds. Expect a sweat with this lowimpact, high-intensity workout, consisting of trunkstrengthening! A mat and light to heavy weight will be used.
Yoga Align with Shannon (In-Person) Building 53: Bring a mat to join this Yoga practice intentionally focused on breath and alignment! Designed to encourage proper form, find awareness of the body as the instructor coaches class participants through various Yoga asanas (poses)!
Tabata with Ashley: Using moderate to heavy weights, class attendees can expect to engage in high-intensity strength training in short bouts. Remaining upright throughout the duration of class, intervals of 20 seconds of hard work followed by 10-secondrecovery intervals will be explored. Tabata boosts aerobic and anaerobic capacity while increasing lean muscle mass and metabolism in a short amount of time. Take it up a notch with Tabata!
Just Stretch! with Charissa: Stretching has been shown to activate the parasympathetic nervous system which aids in resting and proper digestion. With the total body in mind, class attendees will flow through stretches designed to increase muscle blood flow and reduce tightness and tension in the muscles and joints. A fitness mat is suggested.
Cycle Bootcamp with Charissa (In-Person) Rockledge: There’s no better way to ride! Cycle Bootcamp leaves nothing to be desired! From tough terrains to freestyle and flat roads, participants will experience it all! Prepare to break a sweat!
Yoga Strong with Shannon: A class designed to build endurance and strength, Yoga Strong is a Hatha-Vinyasa fusion that delivers authentic poses to participants using hand weights. This is not a traditional Yoga class! A mat and light to heavy dumbbells suggested.
Compound Strength with Ashley: Compound strength training involves exercises that activate multiple muscle groups at the same time. For this workout, intervals of 45 seconds of exertion followed by 15 seconds of recovery will be performed. A mat and moderate to heavy weights will be utilized. End the week strong!
Strength & Stability in Totality with Shannon: Train the body for longevity! This class is designed to promote proper posture and alignment with exercises that strengthen the body for bone and muscle health. March into Monday mobile and strong! Light to heavy weights will be used.
Choreography Combos with Charissa: So, you think you can dance?! In eight easy to moderate movements like the grapevine, mambo and shuffle will be sequenced for a highenergy, low-impact choreographed experience. It’s all about footwork!
H.I.I.T with Shannon (In-Person) Building 53: Get “HIIT “ using light to heavy weights and a mat! Prepare to engage in a high-intensity, cardio and strength-based workout! Guided by timed intervals, participants will execute exercises that trigger a temporary increase in the moving heart rate but a gradual reduction in the resting heart rate.
HIIT Cardio with Ashley: High-intensity interval training packs a big punch! Guided by quick bursts of hard work followed by short recovery periods, H.I.I.T. is extremely effective for fat loss! Participants will engage in 45-second intervals of exertion succeeded by 15-second cycles of rest. Prepare for an upright, low-impact class experience! One heavy weight will be utilized.
Chair Sculpt with Charissa: Who says a chair workout is not beneficial? Whether at a desk or watching tv at home, there are various exercises that can even keep chair dwellers physically active! Using a stationary chair and light weights, participants will engage in 16 repetitions of each exercise. Don’t miss this high energy chair class for all fitness levels!
Just Stretch! with Charissa (In-Person) Rockledge: Tight or tense? Need to break away from the desk? This stretch class will invigorate tired muscles and aid in increasing joint range of motion! Using a mat, participants will be guided through stretches designed to relieve the stressed body. Reset before the weekend!

Leprechaun HIIT with Shannon: Nix the beer andbar andget on par with high-intensity interval training! This workout is all about 45-second spurts of hard work followed by 15-second recovery cycles. Don green workout gear to get in the St. Patrick’s Day spirit! Light to heavy weights and mat suggested.
Cardio Tabata with Ashley: Jumping jacks, squat jumps, mountain climbers, oh my! Tune in for Tabata training for cardiovascular, fat loss and bone benefits! 20-second intervals of hard work followed by 10-second intervals of recovery will guide the class. Grab a mat and come ready to sweat!
Yoga for Athletes with Shannon: Sports and athletic activity require a great amount of discipline, skill and endurance to master. This Yoga practice created with athletes and fitness enthusiasts in mind involves flowing through various poses using weights to gain strength and flexibility. This class aids in daily activity as basic movement foundations originate with Yoga. No Yoga experience needed; a mat is suggested.
Pilates with Charissa: Pilates is a mind-body class that focuses on strengthening and lengthening the body simultaneously for postural health and ease of movement. Breath-work, precision, oppositions, and concentration are some of the key elements of Pilates. Grab a mat and light weights to join this low-impact, transformational workout enjoyed by celebrities and performers alike!
Strong and Stable with Shannon (In-Person) Building 53: Stand strong for stability and balance! Various exercises designed to activate the major muscle groups will be explored. Whether increasing the heart’s capacity to oxygenate the body or lowering resting heart rate, participants are sure to gain cardiovascular benefits! Medium to heavy weights and a mat will be utilized.
BandedAbs+GluteswithAshley:Getastrong,sculptedbody by using fitness bands! Intervals of 45 seconds of work succeeded by 15-seconds intervals of rest will guide this halfhour class experience! Strengthen the abdominal muscles and the gluteal muscles with loop bands! A mat will also be utilized.
Easy Stretch with Charissa: Stretching is important to maintaining healthy muscles and joints. Whether sitting all day or exercising regularly, stretching helps to lengthen shortened muscles and aids in the ease of daily activities. Using a fitness mat, participants will perform stretches to alleviate tightness and soreness in the major and minor muscle groups. Add a little calm and relaxation to close the week!
March Madness Cardio Conditioning with Charissa (InPerson) Rockledge: Jump shots, defensive shuffle, and footwork challenges will guide this workout experience! Interval-based, this high intensity class will provide exhilaration without knee annihilation! Balling!
Stretch + Foam Roll with Shannon: Go into the weekend feeling a little lighter! The ultimate goal for class participants is to relieve joint and muscle stress for ease in daily functionality and movement. Using a foam roller and a mat, participants will utilize the foam roller to aid in myofascial release and engage in stretching for total body wellbeing. Don’t miss this rejuvenating and restorative class experience!
Chair Tabata with Ashley: Up the ante for the low-impact workout with Tabata in the chair! Using a stationary chair and light weights, participants will execute strength and cardiovascular exercises in intervals of 20 seconds of work followed by 10-second recovery intervals. In the office or at home, fitness training in a chair can be beneficial! Commit to sit and be fit!
Nothing like HIIT! with Shannon: High-intensity interval training aids in increasing cardiovascular health while also boosting metabolism and fat oxidation at rest! Using light to heavy weights, participants will perform exercises designed to challenge the major and minor muscle groups. Intervals of 30 seconds of work followed by 10-second rest periods will be explored. Exceed fitness goals with HIIT! A mat is optional.
Kick Challenge with Charissa: Kickstart the Spring with Kick Challenge! Authentic kickboxing kicks will dominate this highenergyclassexperience!Flickkicks,frontkicks,backkicksand roundhouse kicks are the kicks of choice to engage in safe execution of kicks remotely. Expect repetitions of 30 kicks to complete each challenge.
Yoga Strong with Shannon (In-Person) Building 31: Unroll a Yoga mat and get rooted! This evolutionary Yoga class fuses strength training and yogic stretching for a well-rounded workout! A Hatha-influenced practice using light to heavy weights will guide you through a total body experience!
Circuit 360 with Ashley: Get a total body workout with Circuit 360! Moderate to heavy weights will be utilized to increase fat oxidation at rest! In intervals of 45 seconds of work followed by 15-second intervals of recovery, participants can expect a high-intensity, low-impact class experience! Grab a mat and dumbbells and prepare to get chiseled!
Towel Stretch with Charissa: Grab a long towel or strap and let’s get stretched! No muscle group will go unnoticed during this half-hour stretch experience! End the week with a rejuvenating class designed to de-stress and calm the mind and body. A mat is suggested.
Cycle Circuit with Charissa (In-Person) Rockledge: Get in the rotation! Prepare for an interval-based experience fused with circuit variations! Participants can expect to travel through mixed terrains in repetition for endurance benefits! Crush cardiovascular goals with this half-hour cycling class!
Total Body Strength with Shannon: Spring is here…it’s time to get into high gear! Participants will perform highintensity, slow repetition exercises that will shock the body into fat burn! Moderate to heavy weights and a mat will be utilized.
Mobility + Muscle-Focused Tabata with Ashley: Be mobile, be strong! This strength-based mobility class will increase physical activity readiness for daily tasks. Intervals of 20 seconds of hard work followed by 10-second cycles of recovery will illicit a sweat! Moderate to heavy weights are suggested.

During this Coronavirus Pandemic the NIH Blood Bank is open Monday thru Friday 7:30am – 4pm for donations by appointment only! -The Donor Center at Fishers Lane is open for platelet and double red cell donations. NIH Sailing Association
The NIH Sailing Association is one of the R&W activity clubs. Membership is open to NIH (and NOAA) employees, patients, contractors and their families. The Club’s main activity is sailing five Flying Scots, which are owned by the club and maintained in slips south of Annapolis, MD on the South River. Meetingsareheldeachmonthandareopentoallclubmembers. Yearly Membership dues vary according to level of participation. Members qualify to charter club boats by completing the NIHSA Introduction to Sailing course and/or demonstrating their competence in a comprehensive checkout sail. The NIHSA provides many opportunities for Club members to get together. Visit the NIHSA website for more.
NIH Sailing Association Open House
Come to the NIHSA Open House on Tuesday, March 14th, from 6:30pm - 8pm At the Open House, explore your interest in learning to sail and discover all the opportunities for sailing with the NIHSA. Information about our Basic Training classes, our racing program and all of the other social activities the club offers will be available. For more info about the club, visit the NIHSA website. The Open House will take place at the Davis Library in Meeting Room #1 (downstairs), 6400 Democracy Boulevard, Bethesda, MD. Plenty of parking is available. Interested in Learning How to Sail?
The NIHSA Basic Training Sailing Course will be offered Tuesday nights 7pm – 9pm, April 4th – May 23rd. Visit the NIHSA website for details. The in-class sessions will be held in person (location to be determined), and the on-board (on the water) sessions at the Selby Bay Sailing Center, on the South River near Edgewater, MD. Memorial Service for Barbara Cole

A memorial service will be held for Barbara Cole at 12pm on Saturday, April 15th in Rockville Presbyterian Church (215 W Montgomery Ave, Rockville, MD 20850) followed by a reception at the church. Barbara, who passed in 2020, was the R&W store manager in Bldg. 31 for 27 years. Memorial contributions may be made to Special Love - Camp Fantastic

Vanpooling Is Economical and Environmentally Friendly
Openings are available in the vanpool from Hagerstown and Frederick to Bethesda. This 10-passenger van is leased thru Enterprise Vanpool The vanpool leaves Hagerstown Park and Ride at 5:30am for a 7am to 4pm work shift on Bethesda Campus. Thevan leaves NIH at 4:15pm Monday –Friday.Fulltime NIH Employees who turn in their parking hangers are eligible for the Transhare Program.
