Grand Opening of Functional Fitness Facility
Join ORS (Office of Research Services) and the Recreation and Welfare Association fitness and well-being program on Thursday, March 19th from 11am – 1pm at Bldg. 53. There will be fitness demonstrations, tutorials on the equipment, coaches will be on site to answer your questions about fitness and starting an exercise plan, introductions to the various fitness classes and clubs, and membership information. The facility is designed to support fitness and well-being goals of all individuals at any fitness level.

2020 Mobile Mammography Screening
The George Washington Breast Cancer Center will make four visits to NIH for our 2020 Mammography Screening. All NIH employees, their families, contractors, visiting scientists and others associated with NIH are eligible to participate. The screening dates are as follows: Thursday, May 28th – Bldg. 10 Lot 10H Thursday, July 23rd – Bldg. 45 Wednesday, September 23rd – Bldg. 45 Thursday, November 5th – Bldg. 10 Lot 10H The van will be on-site from 9:30am - 3:30pm taking prescheduled appointments. Reservations can be made no more than 1-month prior of screening date. Reservations for the May screening can be made beginning April 30h. There is a minimum requirement of 15 participants for the screenings to take place and a maximum of 25 per date. Each screening is conducted by a female technologist, and a board-certified radiologist specializing in mammography will interpret the images. Appointments should take approximately 20 minutes. Most insurance companies will cover the cost (approx. $350) of the screening. To see if your insurance is accepted or to make an appointment, call 202-741-3252. If there is no answer, please leave a message with your name and phone number. The GW Mammovan staff will call you back and schedule your appointment. Please have your insurance card and doctor’s information available when calling to make an appointment. Who is Eligible? Any woman IS eligible if she meets the following: • She is age 40 or older • She is not pregnant or breast-feeding • She does not have breast implants • She does not have any prior history of breast problems (patients who need a 6 months follow up must get a Diagnostic mammogram not Screening) • She is not having symptoms such as a lump in either breast or unusual breast pain • She has a referring physician or doctor of record (Ex. Medical Doctor, OBGYN doctor) • She has not had a mammogram within the last 12 months Individuals with disabilities who need Sign Language Interpreters and/or reasonable accommodation to participate in this screening should contact the R&W at 301-496-8746 and/or the Federal Relay 1-800-877-8339 or email David Browne. Requests should be made at least 10 days in advance of the appointment. Al-Anon Provides Help for Those Involved with Substance Abuse - Al-Anon, an organization for family members of people with alcohol abuse, now welcomes family members of individuals with narcotic abuse problems to attend weekly group meetings. Peanut Butter “Mousse” & Strawberry Parfaits
INGREDIENTS • ½ cup fat-free Greek yogurt • 2 teaspoons peanut butter • 1/8 teaspoon vanilla extract • 2 tablespoons regular whipped topping • ½ cup chopped or sliced strawberries
DIRECTIONS • In a small bowl mix together yogurt, peanut butter, and vanilla. Fold in whipped topping. • Layer yogurt mixture with strawberries in mason jar, cup, or bowl.

NIH Tae Kwon Do Class
The NIH Tae Kwon Do (TKD) School is offering regular and beginner’s classes for adults and mature teens, no previous martial arts experience is necessary. Current TKD practitioners of any rank or any other arts are welcome. The curriculum combines traditional striking, kicking, forms, sparring, and other basic martial arts techniques with particular emphasis on self-defense. The club meets in the Thomas Malone Judo and Tae Kwon Do Center [Bldg. 31, Rm. B4C18 on Mondays from 6pm – 7:30 pm, Wednesdays from 6pm – 7:30 pm and Fridays from 6pm – 8pm (sparring and self-defense)]. Registration is $50 per quarter or $150 for the year. NIH Sailing Association Open House
Join us at our Open House on Wednesday, March 4th from 5pm - 7:30pm at the FAES House, 9101 Old Georgetown Road (on the corner of Old Georgetown Road and Cedar Lane). At the Open House, you can explore your interest in learning to sail and discover all the opportunities for sailing with the NIHSA. Information will be available regarding the club’s six-week “Introduction to Sailing” classes, racing program and all the other social activities the club offers. $5.00 at the door includes pizza, drinks and snacks. 105th Season of Departmental Tennis League
The HHS Tennis Team participates in the Departmental Tennis League (DTL) with other federal agencies. Competitive doubles matches at USTA 3.5-5.0+ levels are played during the week from 6pm - 8pm, April - Aug, at the Rock Creek Tennis Center (16th and Kennedy Streets, NW). Interested In Learning to Sail?
Introduction to Sailing course: The NIH Sailing Association (NIHSA), an R&W supported club, offers an Introduction to Sailing course for NIH adult employees, contractors, fellows, and patients, and NOAA employees. The spring course will be offered from March 31st – May 12th. For details, visit the NIHSA website. The in-class sessions are held on the NIH Bethesda campus and the on-board (on the water) sessions are held at Selby Bay on the South River near Edgewater, MD. Participants must be able to provide or arrange for their own transportation to both the in-class and onboard sessions. If you are interested in this course and would like more information contact the NIHSA by email. Experienced Sailors: If you are an experienced sailor and would like to be able to charter the NIHSA boats please contact us about joining the club and doing a check-out sail. We are also always looking for experienced volunteers to help with both in-class and on-board instruction.
NIH R&W-Sponsored Co-Ed Softball League

NIH Aikido Club
The NIH Aikido Club is offering a regular beginner’s class for adults and mature teens. New students are invited to begin classes on any Wednesday. Our curriculum under Irvin Vannsensei focuses on the principles of Aikido, the art of peace and follows the Aikido Association of America curriculum. No experience is necessary. The classes meets in the Thomas Malone Judo and Tae Kwon Do Center (Bldg. 31, B4C18) on Wednesdays, 7pm – 8:30pm and Saturdays 10:45am – 1pm. Women in Science Socks
Coming in March to the R&W are “Women in Science” socks. Available will be socks of Ada Lovelace, Elizabeth Blackwell, Joan Beauchamp Proctor and Rosalind Franklin. Ada Lovelace is one of the most consequential mathematical minds, and without her the world we live in would be a much different place. Historians call her algorithm “the world’s first computer program” and refer to her as the “mother of modern computing”? When Elizabeth Blackwell grew up, the idea of a woman becoming a medical doctor was preposterous as physicianship was the exclusive domain of men but she believed she could do anything a man could do. Following her passion, Elizabeth became the first woman to ever graduate from medical college, published influential work on typhoid fever, helped establish England’s first medical school for women and became one of the most admired physicians of her time. Joan Beauchamp Procter was fascinated by animals, especially reptiles and amphibians. Her curiosity led her to a job at the Natural History Museum in London, where, despite not having a college education, she began engaging in academic zoology. As Curator of Reptiles for the London Zoo, she came up with a revolutionary idea that’s still very much in practice in zoos around the world today: modeling the animals’ zoo habitats after the animals’ natural habitats in the wild which makes for happier and healthier animals in captivity and helps improve our understanding of them. When a trio of male scientists won the Nobel Prize in 1962 for “discovering” the structure of DNA, they owed much of their success to their colleague Rosalind Franklin. Trained as a chemist and X-ray crystallographer, Franklin directed part of the research team, and was especially brilliant when it came to microscopic imaging. Photo 51, an X-ray diffraction image that was taken under her supervision, is considered one of the most significant breakthroughs to understanding of the double helix structure.

With over 30 years of experience, they can provide assistance in all areas of taxation. Tax preparation for foreign nationals is also available. Half-hour consultations are held on campus Thursdays thru March 26th between 3pm - 5pm in Bldg. 31, Rm. 2. Schedule your appointment for your half hour session online. Under the leadership of the National Eye Institute, the 2019 NIH CFC was very successful. For the past 15 years, the NIH community joined together and raised over $2M for worthy causes. Your contributions help to cure diseases, give hope to those impoverished without food or clean water, provide shelter for the homeless, deliver support for educating children and improving the quality of their lives, and rebuild communities devastated by natural disasters, and many more selfless acts. NIH continues to be one of the top HHS contributors to the campaign. In addition to reaching and exceeding the 2019 CFC $2M goal, NIH also received two prestigious CFC National Capital Area (CFCNCA) Campaign Contest Awards for “Executive Involvement and Best Overall Outreach Plan”. Nonprofits participating in the CFC do incredible work that ranges from serving hot meals to homeless veterans to supporting research aimed at improving life on our planet. 8th Annual Rockville Arts Festival Transforms Town Square Into Outdoor Art Fair
Whether you are a collector of artisan crafts, a connoisseur of fine art, or a fan of the performing arts, you’ll find the 8th Annual Rockville Arts Festival is an art lover’s dream. The region’s premier arts festival takes place Saturday, May 2nd and Sunday, May 3rd at Rockville Town Square from 11am - 5pm. Admission is free. Originally known as A-RTS, the Rockville Arts Festival is now managed for the second year by VisArts, the area’s leading visual arts organization. “We see the Festival as a natural extension of our mission to use the arts to transform lives and connect individuals of all ages and abilities,” explains VisArts Executive Director Alice Nappy. “Artists – and the art they are creating – bring heart and soul to our community.” Throughout the weekend, the VisArts team will transform the streets surrounding Rockville Town Square into a vibrant outdoor gallery full of stunning art, live music and performances, demonstrations, and artisanal foods. “The Festival offers art that is affordable, engaging and that will appeal to the casual shopper as well as the serious collector,” says Festival Director Robin Markowitz. They work in ceramics, drawings, fiber, glass, graphics, jewelry, metalwork, paintings, photography, printmaking, sculpture, wood and mixed media. New this year, the Rockville celebration of the arts will shine a spotlight on an additional art form with a shorts film festival that starts at 5pm on Saturday, May 2nd. Sesame Place is celebrating its 40th birthday in 2020 and we want you to be a part of the celebration all season long! The park will be decorated with bright balloons and garland, an enormous, inflatable birthday cake, new birthday photo ops and oversized candles. Our extraordinary Neighborhood Birthday Party ParadeTM features festive birthday floats, colorful birthday decor, sparkly cupcakes, and an original, toe-tapping birthday song. An interactive birthday stop will have everyone dancing and clapping along with their favorite Sesame Street friends as they are asked to “put their party hats on and blow out the candles.” New birthday photo ops will be located throughout the park and everyone’s favorite furry friends will be outfitted in their birthday best!
