Chicken & Spinach Soup with Fresh Pesto
INGREDIENTS • 2 tsp plus 1 tbsp extra-virgin olive oil, divided • ½ cup carrot or diced red bell pepper • 1 large boneless, skinless chicken breast (about 8 ounces), cut into quarters • 1 large clove garlic, minced • 5 cups reduced-sodium chicken broth • 1½ teaspoons dried marjoram • 6 ounces baby spinach, coarsely chopped • 1 15-ounce can cannellini beans or great northern beans, rinsed • ¼ cup grated Parmesan cheese • ⅓ cup lightly packed fresh basil leaves • Freshly ground pepper to taste • ¾ cup plain or herbed multigrain croutons for garnish DIRECTIONS • Heat 2 teaspoons oil in a large saucepan or Dutch oven over medium-high heat. Add carrot (or bell pepper) and chicken; cook, turning the chicken and stirring frequently, until chicken begins to brown, 3 to 4 mins. Add garlic and cook, stirring, for 1 minute more. Stir in broth and marjoram; bring to a boil over high heat. Reduce the heat and simmer, stirring occasionally, until the chicken is cooked through, about 5 mins. • With a slotted spoon, transfer the chicken pieces to a clean cutting board to cool. Add spinach and beans to the pot and bring to a gentle boil. Cook for 5 mins to blend the flavors. • Combine the remaining 1 tablespoon oil, Parmesan and basil in a food processor (a mini processor works well). Process until a coarse paste forms, adding a little water and scraping down the sides as necessary. • Cut the chicken into bite-size pieces. Stir the chicken and pesto into the pot. Season with pepper. Heat until hot. Garnish with croutons, if desired.

R&W Tax Preparation Service
It’s that time of year again but don’t fret, we can help! The R&W is sponsoring our annual Income Tax Preparation Service through an independent accounting firm, Teti and Carswell. With over 30 years of experience, they can provide assistance in all areas of taxation. Tax preparation for foreign nationals is also available. Half-hour consultations will be held on campus, in Bldg. 31 Rm. 2 (just past the A-wing elevator), on Thursdays, thru March 28th between 3pm - 5pm. To schedule your appointment, register for your half hour session online. Registration closes at noon on the Tuesday prior to the consultation. Fees vary according to the required IRS schedules that are needed to be filed. Don’t wait! The earlier you get your taxes done, the quicker your refund check comes!

Homebuyer Education and Counseling is a Great Step for Aspiring Homeowners
The desire for homeowner-ship in America remains high. In a 2017 NeighborWorks America survey, 93 percent of respondents said homeownership is important, very important or the most important. Homeownership is important to our economy, our families and our communities and a key vehicle for wealth accumulation. Census data cited in the 2017 National Association of Real Estate Brokers (NAREB) State of Housing in Black America report says that 69 percent of an American house-hold’s net worth is attributable to the net equity in their home. Becoming a homeowner is an exciting journey, and preparation is a key to success. Home-buyer education and counseling agencies are important resources to help aspiring homeowners prepare for and navigate the homebuying process to be-come sustainable homeowners. Through education and understanding of what to expect, homebuyers can get in a home and be successful homeowners over their lifetime. Homebuyer counseling offers one-on-one sessions with a HUD-approved counselor who tailors interactions to the prospective homebuyer’s situation and homeownership needs. Counseling helps prospective homebuyers gain confidence and information needed to take the next step toward buying a home with activities that include budgeting, identifying credit challenges and guidance to improve their credit score, debt reduction strategies and helping to determine afford-ability based on income and debt. Counseling also helps to dispel common myths about obtaining a mortgage loan, like “a 20 percent down payment is required to own a home.” That is not true and holds many homebuyers back from making the step forward and actually applying for a mortgage.
Homebuyer Education continued…
Homebuyer education focuses on the basic concepts of homeownership but is not specific to a transaction. Also provided by a HUD-approved agency, topics covered in these classes include the homebuying process, how to maintain a home and the importance of good credit. Homebuyer education classes can be helpful for aspiring homeowners who have been approved for a loan but need information on better understanding the process to achieve and sustain homeownership. At Wells Fargo we believe in the value homebuyer education and counseling can bring to those seeking homeowner-ship. It’s a significant component of our $60 billion lending commitment to increase African-American homeownership by 2027. In the commitment we pledged to dedicate $15 million to support initiatives for homebuyer education and counseling for African-American families. In our first year, we have provided more than $1.8 million toward this goal in the first year. Wells Fargo also collaborates with a number of agencies to bring homebuyer education and counseling into communities across the country. Here in Washington, D.C., Wells Fargo has been a sponsor of the DC Housing Expo hosted by DC Housing and Community Development and the Greater Washington Urban League for the past eight years. NIH Showed Some Love During the 2018 CFC Campaign
The NIH had another successful CFC campaign! Once again, the NIH Community was able to “Show Some Love” by raising over $2.2 million. Your generous donations support more than 8,000 local, national, and international charities. Your contributions help to cure diseases, give hope to those impoverished without food or clean water, provide shelter for the homeless, deliver support for educating children and improving the quality of their lives, and rebuild communities devastated by natural disasters, and many more selfless acts. The NIH continues to be one of the top HHS contributors to the campaign. The NIH campaign, led by National Center for Advancing Translational Sciences (NCATS), also received a CFC National Capital Area (CFCNCA) Campaign Contest Award for best “Executive Involvement”. Congratulations on a job well done to NCATS and to all who donated to the campaign. The R&W is proud to be a part of such a worthy cause and thankful to work with generous people.

NIH Philharmonia Orchestra Concert
The NIH Philharmonia, under the direction of Nancia D'Alimonte, presents "Three’s a Charm" on March 2nd at 7:30pm at St. Elizabeth Church in Rockville, MD. The concert is free and will include Prokofiev – Love of Three Oranges (March & Scherzo), Ravel – La Valse, Sibelius – Symphony no. 3. For more info.
NIH Tae Kwon Do Class
The NIH Tae Kwon Do (TKD) School is offering regular and beginner’s classes for adults and mature teens, no previous martial arts experience is necessary. Current TKD practitioners of any rank or any other arts are welcome. The curriculum combines traditional striking, kicking, forms, sparring, and other basic martial arts techniques with particular emphasis on self-defense. The club meets in the Thomas Malone Judo and Tae Kwon Do Center (Bldg. 31, Rm. B4C18 on Mondays from 6pm – 8pm, Wednesdays from 6pm – 7pm and Fridays from 6pm – 8pm (sparring and self-defense). Registration is $50 per quarter or $150 for the year. The club is also recruiting black belts in Tae Kwon Do to help as instructors. NIH Sailing Association Open House
Join us at our Open House on Wednesday, March 6th from 5pm - 7:30pm at the FAES House, 9101 Old Georgetown Road (on the corner of Old Georgetown Road and Cedar Lane). At the Open House, you can explore your interest in learning to sail and discover all the opportunities for sailing with the NIHSA. Information will be available regarding the club’s six-week “Introduction to Sailing” classes, racing program and all the other social activities the club offers. $5.00 at the door includes pizza, drinks and snacks. 104th Season of Departmental Tennis League
The HHS Tennis Team participates in the Departmental Tennis League (DTL) with other federal agencies. Competitive doubles matches at USTA 3.5-5.0+ levels are played during the week from 6pm - 8pm, April - Aug, at the Rock Creek Tennis Center (16th and Kennedy Streets, NW). Current and former government employees, contractors, spouses, and children (18+) are eligible to play. Complete a brief survey for details.
Interested in Learning How to Sail?
NIHSA Basic Training Sailing Course: The NIH Sailing Association (NIHSA), an R&W supported club, offers a Sailing Basic Training course for NIH adult employees, contractors, fellows, and patients, and NOAA employees. The Spring session will run April 2nd - May 17th and the Summer session will run from July 16th - August 13th. Registration for Spring is open now, visit NIHSA for details. The in-class sessions are held on the NIH Bethesda campus and the on-board (on the water) sessions are held at Selby Bay on the South River near Edgewater, MD. Participants must be able to provide or arrange for their own transportation to both the in-class and onboard sessions. Experienced Sailors: If you are an experienced sailor and would like to be able to charter the NIHSA boats please contact us about joining the club and doing a check-out sail. We are also always looking for experienced volunteers to help with both in-class and on-board instruction.

Looking for a spring and summer outdoor activity? Join the NIH Co-Ed Softball League! Teams play once each week from mid-April to mid-August. The NIH Aikido Club is offering a regular beginner’s class for adults and mature teens. New students are invited to begin classes on any Wednesday. Our curriculum under Irvin Vannsensei focuses on the principles of Aikido, the art of peace and follows the Aikido Association of America. No experience is necessary. The classes meet in the Thomas Malone Judo and Tae Kwon Do Center (Bldg. 31, B4C18) on Wednesdays, 7pm – 8:30pm and Saturdays 10:45am – 1pm. Registration is $50 per quarter and $40 for a uniform.
