Buzzing For Change Students from George Washington University will host their tenth annual head-shaving marathon to benefit Special Love, an NIH related charity for children with cancer. Buzzing for Change at GWU will include awesome music, free pizza and lots of people getting their haircuts! This year, there will be a minimum donation of about $9.99 for a haircut. Participants shave their heads for money (pledges you collect) or just cut off enough (8” or more) to donate to Locks of Love. Not sure about buzzing? You can always volunteer! Money raised from the event will be given to Special Love to help support children living with cancer. Prizes will be awarded to top-earners. So if you are looking to get a haircut why not head over to GWU and see what the buzz is all about!

NIH Showed Some Love During the 2017 CFC Campaign The NIH had another successful CFC campaign! Once again, the NIH Community was able to “Show Some Love” by raising over $2.2 million. Your generous donations support more than 10,000 local, national, and international charities. Your contributions help to cure diseases, give hope to those impoverished without food or clean water, provide shelter for the homeless, deliver support for educating children and improving the quality of their lives, and rebuild communities devastated by natural disasters, and many more selfless acts. The NIH continues to be one of the top HHS contributors to the campaign. The NIH campaign, led by NINDS, also received three Campaign Contest Awards including “Executive Involvement”, “Best Photography”, and “Best Overall Outreach Plan”. Individual awards were received by NIA “Best Special Event”, CC “Executive Involvement” and “Civilian Hero Awards” to CFC champion coordinators “Janie” Robak (NLM) and Margarita Valencia (NIMH). Congratulations on a job well done to NINDS and to all of those who donated to the campaign. The R&W is proud to be a part of such a great effort and thankful to work with such great people.

Remembering a Friend We Lost On February 15th NIH suffered an unfortunate loss with the passing of Pamela Jenkins, Quality Assurance Specialist with the Division of Amenities and Transportation Services (DATS). Pam was an active supporter of the R&W and worked closely with the R&W on day to day operations, special events and more. She enjoyed attending Comic-Cons, dressing in costume at the R&W Halloween CFC event, and playing PokemonGo. Pam will be remembered by many of her friends and colleagues for her rigid work ethic and determination through adversity. Contributions may be made in her name to a charity of her choice will be updated in the E-Newsletter.

NIH Community Orchestra Spring Concert Join the NIH Community Orchestra on Saturday, March 17th at 7pm for their FREE Spring Concert. Performances include Britten’s Courtly Dances from Gloriana, Grieg’s Wedding Day at Troldhaugen, Rimsky-Korsakov’s Russian Easter Overture and Beethoven’s Symphony No. 7. NIH Tae Kwon Do Class The NIH Tae Kwon Do (TKD) School is offering regular and beginner’s classes for adults and mature teens, no previous martial arts experience is necessary. Current TKD practitioners of any rank or any other arts are welcome. The curriculum combines traditional striking, kicking, forms, sparring, and other basic martial arts techniques with particular emphasis on self-defense.

The club meets in the Thomas Malone Judo and Tae Kwon Do Center (Bldg. 31, Rm. B4C18 on Mondays from 6pm – 8pm, Wednesdays from 6pm – 7pm and Fridays from 6pm – 8pm (sparring and self-defense). Registration is $50 per quarter or $150 for the year. The club is also recruiting black belts in Tae Kwon Do to help as instructors. Departmental Tennis League Celebrating its 103rd Season The HHS Tennis Team participates in the Departmental Tennis League (DTL) with other federal agencies. Competitive doubles matches at USTA 3.5-5.0+ levels are played during the week from 6pm - 8pm, April - Aug, at the Rock Creek Tennis Center (16th and Kennedy Streets, NW). Al-Anon Provides Help for Those Involved with Substance Abuse - Al-Anon, an organization for family members of people with alcohol abuse, now welcomes family members of individuals with narcotic abuse problems to attend weekly group meetings. Al-Anon holds two weekly group meetings; Mondays and Thursdays at noon in Bldg. 31, Room 1B50.

R&W Club Frederick Bus Trip to Longwood Gardens Join R&W Club Frederick on their trip to Longwood Gardens, an American botanical garden consisting of over 1,077 acres of gardens, woodlands, and meadows in the Brandywine Creek Valley of Kennett Square, Pennsylvania. The trip is $135 and includes lunch, entrance to the gardens, and roundtrip transportation. The bus will pick up at 8:30am in Frederick at 5202 Presidents Court. Upon arrival enjoy free time in historic Kennett Square before lunch at the Kennett Square Inn and then touring Longwood Gardens. The bus will depart for home at 7pm. NIH R&W-Sponsored Co-Ed Softball League Looking for a spring and summer outdoor activity? Join the NIH Co-Ed Softball League. Teams play once each week from midApril to mid-August. NIH Aikido Club The NIH Aikido Club is offering a regular beginner’s class for adults and mature teens. New students are invited to begin classes on any Wednesday. Our curriculum under Irvin Vann-sensei focuses on the principles of Aikido, the art of peace and follows the Aikido Association of America. No experience is necessary.

The classes meets in the Thomas Malone Judo and Tae Kwon Do Center (Bldg. 31, B4C18) on Wednesdays, 7pm – 8:30pm and Saturdays 10:45am – 1pm. Registration is $50 per quarter and $40 for a uniform. All are welcome to watch regular training sessions.

Sailing Basic Training course: The NIH Sailing Association (NIHSA), an R&W supported club, offers a Sailing Basic Training course for NIH adult employees, contractors, fellows, and patients, and NOAA employees.
