The George Washington Breast Cancer Center will make four visits to NIH for our 2018 Mammography Screening. All NIH employees, their families, contractors, visiting scientists and others associated with NIH are eligible to participate. The screening dates are as follows:

Reservations can be made no more than 1 month prior of screening date. There is a minimum requirement of 15 participants for the screenings to take place and a maximum of 25 per date. Each screening is conducted by a female technologist, and a board certified radiologist specializing in mammography will interpret the images. Appointments should take approximately 20 minutes. Most insurance companies will cover the cost (approx. $350) of the screening. To see if your insurance is accepted or to make an appointment, call 202-741-3252. If there is no answer, please leave a message with your name and phone number. The GW Mammovan staff will call you back and schedule your appointment. Please have your insurance card and doctor’s information available when calling to make an appointment. Who is Eligible? Any woman IS eligible if she meets the following:

• She is age 40 or older • She is not pregnant or breast-feeding • She does not have breast implants • She does not have any prior history of breast problems (patients who need a 6 months follow up must get a Diagnostic mammogram not Screening) • She is not having symptoms such as a lump in either breast or unusual breast pain • She has a referring physician or doctor of record (Ex. Medical Doctor, OBGYN doctor) • She has not had a mammogram within the last 12 months Individuals with disabilities who need Sign Language Interpreters and/or reasonable accommodation to participate in this screening should contact the R&W at 301-496-8746 and/or the Federal Relay 1-800-877-8339 or email browned2@mail.nih.gov. Requests should be made at least 10 days in advance of the appointment. Camp Fantastic – Special Love, Inc. Children with cancer have to grow up way too fast. They feel different from other children and many miss out on activities that healthy children experience daily. This was the reason Special Love was created. Special Love programs, including Camp Fantastic, offer children with cancer the chance to jump, play, explore, laugh, swim and make friends through a community of support, made up of patients, family, and staff who know and understand the trials and triumphs of battling childhood cancer. NIH Safety, Health & Wellness Day – June 27th The NIH Safety, Health and Wellness Day will be held Wednesday, June 27th, rain or shine, at the Clinical Center – South Complex, Bldg. 10 from 10:30am – 1:30pm. Everyone is welcome to come and enjoy the activities and learn about safety, health and wellness opportunities at the NIH. This annual event is being jointly sponsored by the Office of Research Services, Office of Research Facilities, NIH Occupational Safety and Health Committee, IC Safety Chairpersons Committee, Laboratory Sustainability Group and 2018 IC co-sponsor, the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases (NIDDK).

R&W Annual Meeting The R&W Annual Meeting will be held on Wednesday, June 20th from 12pm – 1pm in Bldg. 31, Rm. 2. Interested in Learning How to Sail?

The focus of this year’s event is to enhance employee nutrition, wellness, physical fitness, safety awareness and prevent or reduce work related injuries and illnesses. A wide range of activities and exhibits will be presented including health screenings, safety and health promotion exhibits, nutrition demonstrations and tastings, physical fitness activities, adult dependent care and elder care information fair, NIH IC exhibits and NIH Library virtual reality demonstrations.

Sailing Basic Training course: The NIH Sailing Association (NIHSA), an R&W club, offers a Sailing Basic Training course for NIH adult employees, contractors, fellows, and patients, and NOAA employees. In addition to the main campus, there will also be Take a Hike Day activities at various off campus locations. In its 11th year, Take a Hike Day is the NIH’s largest fitness and wellness event with over 10,000 individuals participating in its 11 year history. Join us for the 22nd Annual Comcast Film Festival at Strathmore! This year’s festival will take place Aug. 23 – 26th at the lawn at Strathmore. Bring your blanket, chairs (low chairs only please) and anyone who loves movies. The movies are free; will be available to purchase; and of course we will be holding a raffle and accepting donations to help raise funds for the NIH Charities (Friends of Patients at the NIH, The Children’s Inn and Camp Fantastic/Special Love). Volunteer information will be announced in June. Due to the limited duration and size of this year’s festival volunteer opportunities will be LIMITED.

As part of the R&W’s new local restaurant page, some of the restaurants are offering special fundraising events. Our first “dine out” fundraising events will be June 19th and 26th from 12pm – 8pm at Dog Haus Biergarten. 20% of all sales, including alcoholic beverages, will go back to the R&W as long as you provide the restaurant with a copy of the event flyer. Dog Haus Biergarten, which opened in April, is located at 7904 Woodmont Avenue and is the only one of the franchise located on the East Coast. They are known for their gourmet hotdogs, sausages and burgers. So remember on June 19th and 26th to treat your co-worker to lunch, grab dinner on the way home, or meet up with some friends for Happy Hour at Dog Haus and bring the flyer that R&W sent you.

Al-Anon Provides Help for Those Involved with Substance Abuse - Al-Anon, an organization for family members of people with alcohol abuse, now welcomes family members of individuals with narcotic abuse problems to attend weekly group meetings. Time to Start Training! The Institute Relay Is September 20th! Can your team defeat the two time defending champs “Charm City NeuRUNS”? This year the 35th Annual Institute Relay will be held on Thursday, Sept. 20th outside of Bldg. 10 South. It’s time to start gathering your team together so you can pick your team name and of course, start training. Put on your thinking caps and think creatively about your team name. Examples from last year include: Where the Wild Things Run, Running Our Assays Off, In It For The T-Shirts, ChlorRide Like The Wind, Not Fast Just Furious, Baby Got Track, Your Pace or Mine, I B Pro Fun, We Keep the Gov’t Running, Holy Fit, and Cirque de Sore Leg. Collective Goods, formerly Books Are Fun, will be returning to the Bldg. 31A Lobby on Tuesday, June 19th (10am – 3pm), and Wednesday, June 20th (9am – 2pm). Shop from a variety of books, toys, electronics, gadgets, kitchenware, stationary and more. It’s a one-stop shopping bonanza. A portion of sales comes back to R&W to allow us to continue offering great programs to the NIH community.

What to Do Around Town DC: Jazz in the Garden – Fridays thru August 24th – National Gallery of Art Sculpture Garden – The free concert series features jazz artists performing a wide variety of styles— Traditional New Orleans jazz, blues, swing, Ska, Funk, Blues, PanCaribbean salsa, boogaloo, Go-go, and more. During jazz concerts, the Pavilion Café offers a special menu of creative American cuisine and refreshments. Alcoholic beverages may not be brought into the Sculpture Garden but may be purchased at the café. Concerts take place every Friday from5pm – 8:30pm. MD: Ocean City Air Show – June 16th & 17th – Ocean City, MD The 11th Annual Ocean City Air show will be headlined by the U.S. Air Force Thunderbirds and feature a wide variety of military and civilian demo teams including the F-35 Joint Strike Fighter! NIH Community Orchestra and Chorus Presents “A Summer Concert” on June 9th The NIH Community Orchestra and Chorus will present “A Summer Concert” on Saturday, June 9th at 3pm at Cedar Lane Unitarian Church, 9601 Cedar Lane, Bethesda, Maryland. This one-time only performance will feature timeless orchestral and choral classics, as well as two conductors. The Orchestra will perform Dvorak’s: Slavonic Dances op.46, nos. 1&2 and Suite, op.98b "American". The Chorus will join with the Orchestra in the performance of Brahms’s Nanie. The program will also feature Brahms’s: Violin Concerto (mvt. 1 only with Heather MacArthur, violin). The concert is free of charge and parking is free as well. Free will donations are welcome to benefit the NIH charities. The R&W has NIH organizational license plates for Maryland residents. Plates are $15 and are MVA Non-logo NIH plates. There is an additional $5 service fee payable to the R&W.
