Join NHLBI’s #OurHearts movement in February for American Heart Month

February is American Heart Month and National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI) encourages people across the country to reduce their risk for heart disease. A healthy lifestyle that includes regular physical activity, smart eating, maintaining a good weight, and not smoking, can substantially lower risk of heart disease and stroke. This year’s theme, “Moving More,” encourage everyone to join others to make heart-healthy and long-lasting lifestyle changes. Research shows a strong social support can make it easier to stay motivated and reach your fitness and nutrition goals. During American Heart Month, NHLBI is encourages everyone to use #OurHearts on social media to share what you and your friends, family, and coworkers are doing to get heart healthy together. Visit #OurHearts to be inspired by the activities of others around the country. Join the #OurHearts movement at NIH by participating in heart-healthy events on the NIH campus. Bring your coworkers and come have fun!

The Billion Steps Challenge!

Join the Billion Steps Challenge, a NIH-wide community event! The American Public Health Association is hosting a Billion Step Challenge thru National Public Health Week in April. Join the “NIH One Billion Steps” team and help us to contribute to the billion steps goal. Registered participants log their daily step count and contribute to the NIH team total. The Billion Steps Challenge aligns with the broader health promotion efforts that have been part of recent NIH initiatives, including "Step it Up: The Surgeon General's Call to Action to Promote Walking and Walkable Communities.” Register online at the Billion Steps Challenge website. When you get to “Join a Team,” type “NIH” into the dropdown menu to locate the “NIH One Billion Steps” team. You can enter your steps from a pedometer manually or sync the challenge to your fitness device. You can also convert other physical activities such as swimming, yoga, and weight-lifting to the equivalents in steps.

2020 Mobile Mammography Screening

The George Washington Breast Cancer Center will make four visits to NIH for our 2020 Mammography Screening. All NIH employees, their families, contractors, visiting scientists and others associated with NIH are eligible to participate. The screening dates are as follows: Thursday, May 28th – Bldg. 10 Lot 10H Thursday, July 23rd – Bldg. 45 Wednesday, September 23rd – Bldg. 45 Thursday, November 5th – Bldg. 10 Lot 10H The van will be on-site from 9:30am - 3:30pm taking prescheduled appointments. Reservations can be made no more than 1-month prior of screening date. Reservations for the May screening can be made beginning April 30h. There is a minimum requirement of 15 participants for the screenings to take place and a maximum of 25 per date. Each screening is conducted by a female technologist, and a board-certified radiologist specializing in mammography will interpret the images. Appointments should take approximately 20 minutes. Most insurance companies will cover the cost (approx. $350) of the screening. To see if your insurance is accepted or to make an appointment, call 202-741-3252. If there is no answer, please leave a message with your name and phone number. The GW Mammovan staff will call you back and schedule your appointment. Please have your insurance card and doctor’s information available when calling to make an appointment. Who is Eligible? Any woman IS eligible if she meets the following: • She is age 40 or older • She is not pregnant or breast-feeding • She does not have breast implants • She does not have any prior history of breast problems (patients who need a 6 months follow up must get a Diagnostic mammogram not Screening) • She is not having symptoms such as a lump in either breast or unusual breast pain • She has a referring physician or doctor of record (Ex. Medical Doctor, OBGYN doctor) • She has not had a mammogram within the last 12 months Individuals with disabilities who need Sign Language Interpreters and/or reasonable accommodation to participate in this screening should contact the R&W at 301-496-8746 and/or the Federal Relay 1-800-877-8339 or email David Browne. Requests should be made at least 10 days in advance of the appointment. For more information about mammography, breast cancer, or other types of cancer call the National Cancer Institute’s Cancer Information Service at 1-800-4-CANCER or see www.nci.nih.gov. Al-Anon Provides Help for Those Involved with Substance Abuse - Al-Anon, an organization for family members of people with alcohol abuse, now welcomes family members of individuals with narcotic abuse problems to attend weekly group meetings. Al-Anon holds two weekly group meetings; Mondays and Thursdays at noon in Bldg. 31, Rm. 1B50.

NIH R&W Kennedy Shriver Aquatic Center (KSAC) Corporate Membership

Eligibility for KSAC Corporate Memberships apply to any NIH staff member who has both a valid NIH ID badge, current NIH email address, and a current R&W membership. This offer doesn’t extend to family members. KSAC memberships under this promotion are $150 (savings of over $200), paid by check or cashier’s check. This group membership provides joiners with full access to the KSAC, ONLY. The KSAC is located at 5900 Executive Blvd; North Bethesda, MD. To join NIH employee can sign up for their membership directly at the KSAC. You must present your NIH ID badge, as well as a copy of your R&W membership registration. We suggest purchasing your R&W membership online and taking a copy of the confirmation to the KSAC. Currently scheduled to appear are Lazaro Diamonds, BeAdmired, Tibet Sky Emporium, Cupcakes Lounge, Spice Island Silver, the Chocolatier’s Palette, D’s Exquisite Finds, In-Jeen-Yuhs, AhhCandles, Toro Mata and The Fashnique. This will be a great opportunity to shop for a loved one just before Valentine’s Day, or just because, or to pick up something nice for yourself.

R&W Tax Preparation Service

It’s that time of year again but don’t fret, we can help! The R&W is sponsoring our annual Income Tax Preparation Service through an independent accounting firm, Teti and Carswell. With over 30 years of experience, they can provide assistance in all areas of taxation. Tax preparation for foreign nationals is also available. Half-hour consultations will be held on campus, on Thursdays, February 6th thru March 26th between 3pm - 5pm in Bldg. 31, Rm. 2. Please note sessions for February 13th will take place in Bldg. 31, Rm. 1E09. To schedule your appointment, register for your half hour session online. Registration closes at noon on the Tuesday prior to the consultation. Fees vary according to the required IRS schedules that are needed to be filed. Don’t wait! The earlier you get your taxes done, the quicker your refund check comes!

NIH Philharmonia Orchestra Concert

The NIH Philharmonia, under the direction of Nancia D'Alimonte, presents "Rushing Here and There, Rushing Everywhere" on February 22nd at 7:30pm at St. Elizabeth Church in Rockville, MD. Sweet Potatoes with Shredded Salad

INGREDIENTS 4 small sweet potatoes (6 to 8 oz. each) 4 radishes 2 medium carrots (4 oz. each) 1 large beet (about 6 oz.) 1 medium Granny Smith apple (about 6 oz.) 1/2 small red onion 2 tbsp. extra-virgin olive oil 1 tbsp. lemon juice kosher salt Freshly ground black pepper 2 tbsp. sunflower seeds 2 tbsp. pepitas 2 tbsp. pure maple syrup Plain Greek yogurt, for serving

DIRECTIONS Prick potatoes all over with a fork and place on microwave-safe plate. Microwave on high for 3 minutes. Flip over and microwave until tender, 4 to 6 minutes more. Meanwhile, using a food processor with the large-hole grater attachment, coarsely grate radishes, carrots, beet, apple and onion. Transfer vegetables to large bowl and toss with the oil, lemon juice and a pinch each salt and pepper. Place seeds in small skillet and cook, tossing occasionally, until toasted, about 2 minutes. Remove from heat and immediately add maple syrup, swirling pan until bubbles subside. Pour onto small nonstick foil sheet and let cool. Split potatoes; top with salad then seeds. Add dollop of yogurt.

NIH Sailing Association Open House

Join us at our Open House on Wednesday, March 4th from 5pm - 7:30pm at the FAES House, 9101 Old Georgetown Road (on the corner of Old Georgetown Road and Cedar Lane). Collective Goods Gift Show Returns This Spring February 11th & 12th - Bldg. 31A

Collective Goods, formerly Books Are Fun, will be returning to the Bldg. 31A Lobby on Tuesday, February 11th (10am – 3pm) and Wednesday, February 12th (9am – 3pm). Shop from a variety of books, toys, electronics, gadgets, kitchenware, stationary and more. It’s a one-stop shopping bonanza. A portion of sales comes back to R&W to allow us to continue offering great programs to the NIH community. Additional dates for Bldg. 31 and the Bldg. 10 South Lobby will be announced in March.

Interested In Learning to Sail?

Introduction to Sailing course: The NIH Sailing Association (NIHSA), an R&W supported club, offers an Introduction to Sailing course for NIH adult employees, contractors, fellows, and patients, and NOAA employees. The spring course will be offered from March 31st – May 12th. For details, visit the NIHSA website. The in-class sessions are held on the NIH Bethesda campus and the on-board (on the water) sessions are held at Selby Bay on the South River near Edgewater, MD. Participants must be able to provide or arrange for their own transportation to both the in-class and onboard sessions. Experienced Sailors: If you are an experienced sailor and would like to be able to charter the NIHSA boats please contact us about joining the club and doing a check-out sail.
