Just in time for the holidays Collective Goods, formerly Books Are Fun, will be returning to the Bldg. 31A Lobby on Tuesday, December 5th (9am – 3pm) and Wednesday, December 6th (9am – 3pm). A portion of sales comes back to R&W to allow us to continue offering great programs to the NIH community.
Eligibility for MAC Corporate Memberships apply to any NIH staff member who has both a valid NIH ID badge, current NIH email address, and a current R&W membership. Manchester String Quartet Concerts in Building 10 Please join us for the 29th annual seasonal performance of the Manchester String Quartet. NIH Philharmonia Orchestra Concert The NIH Philharmonia concert schedule is now underway. After a successful opening concert, the orchestra will be performing “It’s for the Birds” on Saturday, Dec. 2nd at St. Elizabeth Church in Rockville (917 Montrose Rd. between Rockville Pike and I270). The concert includes Rossini - The Thieving Magpie, Respighi - The Birds, Saint-Saens - The Swan from Carnival of the Animals, and Stravinsky - The Firebird (1919 version). NIH Chamber Singers Present Holiday Inspirations The NIH Chamber Singers, under the direction of Dwight Brock, will celebrate December with its winter concert series, Holiday Inspirations featuring music inspired by the Christmas and Hannukah traditions, both sacred and secular. The first concert takes place on Tuesday, December 5th at 6pm at the Rockville Nursing Home (303 Adclare Rd., Rockville, MD 20850). The second concert takes place on Thursday, December 7th at 12pm in the Bldg. 10 CRC Atrium. The final concert takes place at 3pm on Saturday, December 9th at Marilyn J. The NIH Community Orchestra & Chorus Winter Concert Come enjoy a winter concert presented by the NIH Community Orchestra and Chorus. The concert will take place Saturday, December 9th at 7pm at Cedar Lane Unitarian Church, 9601 Cedar Lane, Bethesda, Maryland. This free performance will feature the work of Elgar, Berlioz, Tchaikovsky, Darby/Simeone, and Leroy Anderson. This is the 22nd year of the Orchestra’s performance of a holiday concert. Christmas Revels 2017 The Washington Revels 35th annual production journeys to TroisRivières, a charming town in southern Québec. In the late December chill, the glow of hearth fires warms the spirits of the villagers as they prepare for the time of celebration–le temps des Fêtes! The timber business is thriving and the Hudson’s Bay Company is paying good money for beaver pelts. A group of young men prepares to leave home to seek profit and adventure— to be voyageurs. Time to Replace Your Smoke Alarms Update to Maryland’s Smoke Alarm Law Maryland’s new smoke alarm law requires the replacement of all BATTERY-ONLY operated smoke alarms with units powered by sealed-in, 10-year long-life batteries. All smoke alarms have expiration dates. Both hard-wired and battery-operated smoke alarms need to be replaced every ten years. If your smoke alarm has not been replaced since 2006, it’s time! Smoke alarms are required to be located outside each sleeping area and on every level of your home including basements (finished or unfinished). For homes constructed since 1994, smoke alarms have been required inside all sleeping rooms. For maximum protection, fire officials recommend installing smoke alarms in sleeping rooms regardless of the year of construction. Homeowners have until January 1, 2018 to comply with the new law. Any Montgomery County homeowner requiring more info or requesting that Montgomery County Fire and Rescue Service perform a free home safety check, including a check of smoke and carbon monoxide alarms, can do so by visiting www.mcfrs.org/mcsafe or calling 311. Christmas Lights Tour of Dyker Heights A Slice of Brooklyn Christmas Lights Tour is a 3.5 hour bus tour that includes an audio-visual presentation, mechanical reindeer, glowing nativity scenes, dazzling lights, 30-foot toy soldiers and old-fashioned holiday cheer as we visit the famous Christmas lights and decorations of the Dyker Heights section of Brooklyn, made famous in the PBS documentary “Dyker Lights” and featured on TLC’s “Crazy Christmas Lights”. You will also visit the Bay Ridge section of Brooklyn for their incredible Christmas lights. On the way back to Manhattan watch a video montage of Christmas specials and variety shows.
