2019 Mobile Mammography Screening

The George Washington Breast Cancer Center will make two more visits to NIH for our 2019 Mammography Screening. All NIH employees, their families, contractors, visiting scientists and others associated with NIH are eligible to participate.

The screening dates are as follows: Thursday, August 29th – Building 10, Lot H Thursday, November 7th – Building 10, Lot H The van will be on-site from 9:30am - 3:30pm taking prescheduled appointments. Reservations can be made no more than 1-month prior of screening date. Reservations for the August screening are now open and the November screening can be made beginning October 7th. There is a minimum requirement of 15 participants for the screenings to take place and a maximum of 25 per date. Each screening is conducted by a female technologist, and a board-certified radiologist specializing in mammography will interpret the images. Appointments should take approximately 20 minutes. Most insurance companies will cover the cost (approx. $350) of the screening. To see if your insurance is accepted or to make an appointment, call 202-741-3252. If there is no answer, please leave a message with your name and phone number. The GW Mammovan staff will call you back and schedule your appointment. Please have your insurance card and doctor’s information available when calling to make an appointment.

Who is Eligible? Any woman IS eligible if she meets the following: • She is age 40 or older • She is not pregnant or breast-feeding • She does not have breast implants • She does not have any prior history of breast problems (patients who need a 6 months follow up must get a Diagnostic mammogram not Screening) • She is not having symptoms such as a lump in either breast or unusual breast pain • She has a referring physician or doctor of record (Ex. Medical Doctor, OBGYN doctor) • She has not had a mammogram within the last 12 months Individuals with disabilities who need Sign Language Interpreters and/or reasonable accommodation to participate in this screening should contact the R&W at 301-496-8746 and/or the Federal Relay 1-800-877-8339 or email David Browne.

Requests should be made at least 10 days in advance of the appointment. For more information about mammography, breast cancer, or other types of cancer call the National Cancer Institute’s Cancer Information Service at 1-800-4-CANCER or see www.nci.nih.gov.

Al-Anon Provides Help for Those Involved with Substance Abuse - Al-Anon, an organization for family members of people with alcohol abuse, now welcomes family members of individuals with narcotic abuse problems to attend weekly group meetings. Al-Anon holds two weekly group meetings; Mondays and Thursdays at noon in Bldg. 31, Rm. 1B50.

Join us all September long for a variety of Yoga Month related activities including NIH Yoga Day on Tuesday, September 24th on the FAES Terrace of Bldg. 10 from 11am – 2pm. Share, deepen, and celebrate the dimensions of yoga, culminating in a celebration of National Yoga Month. Join us for FREE Yoga classes in a variety of formats. The Institute Relay Is September 18th!

On Your Mark, Get Set…Go! It’s time for the 36th NIH Institute Challenge Relay and we’re taking it back to Bldg. 1.

Can your team defeat the defending champs “Work Time’s Over”? The rules are the same…the Relay consists of teams of five runners each whom run a ½ mile loop around Bldg.1. All Institutes, Centers, Divisions, and Contractors are invited to enter as many teams as they wish. Each team must have men and women runners with at least two runners of the same sex (you can have a team of two females-three males or three females-two males). The race will be held on Wednesday, September 18th in front of Bldg. 1, beginning at 11:30am. It’s time to start gathering your team together so you can pick your team name and of course, start training. Put on your thinking caps and think creatively about your team name. Examples from last year include: There Is No Eye In Team, Running Out of Space, Designer Genes, ChloRide Like the Wind, Do You Even Formulate Bro?, Water You Running From?, Between a Walk and a Hard Pace and Ain’t Running No Clinical Trial.

Take the next few weeks to gather for jogs around Bldg. 1 or visit the fitness centers in Bldg. 31for a run on the treadmill or elliptical machine. The relay is a great reason to set a new fitness goal while preparing for a fun event. However, the most important part of the race is to have fun and enjoy the company of your fellow NIHers. Remember, contractor teams are welcome as well as more than one team per Institute. Get your sneakers ready for some action. It’s going to be fun! Register your team of 5 for $25. We ask that each group leader also provide the name and contact info for one volunteer. Don’t forget to visit with event exhibitors as well. Collective Goods Gift Show Returns This Fall

Collective Goods, formerly Books Are Fun, will be returning to the Bldg. 31A Lobby September 4th – 6th. Shop from a variety of books, toys, electronics, gadgets, kitchenware, stationary and more. It’s a one-stop shopping bonanza. A portion of sales comes back to R&W to allow us to continue offering great programs to the NIH community. Dates at Bldg. 10 are being finalized.

Grilled Chicken Breasts with Spicy Peach Glaze

INGREDIENTS • 2 cups peach preserves or jam • 3 tablespoons olive oil, plus more for brushing • 2 tablespoons soy sauce • 1 tablespoon Dijon mustard • 1 tablespoon finely chopped garlic • 1 small jalapeno, finely chopped • Kosher salt and freshly ground pepper • 8 frenched chicken breasts • 4 ripe peaches, cut in half and pitted DIRECTIONS • Combine the peach preserves, olive oil, soy sauce, mustard, garlic and jalapeno in a medium bowl and season with salt and pepper. Reserve ½ cup.

Preheat the grill. Brush the chicken with olive oil and season with salt and pepper. Place the chicken skin-side down and cook until golden brown, 6 to 7 minutes. Turn over and continue cooking for 5 to 6 minutes. Brush both sides with the peach glaze and continue cooking until done, an additional 4 to 5 minutes.

Place the peach halves cut side down on the grill and grill for 2 minutes. Turn over, brush with the reserved 1/2 cup of peach glaze and grill until the peaches are soft, 3 to 4 more minutes.

Vanpooling Is Economical and Environmentally Friendly

Eric Sofranko has openings in his vanpool. The vanpool departs the Jefferson, MD Park-n-Ride/Firehouse at 5:30am and arrives at Campus/Bldg. 31 by 6:30am. The van departs Campus/Bldg. 31 at 4:15pm and arrives in Jefferson at 5:15pm. If you are interested in this Jefferson-to-Campus vanpool, contact Eric at 240-627-3585.

Kathy Manigo-Lewis has openings in her vanpool. The van is scheduled Monday - Friday, 9-hour days, with AWS. It departs the Route 17 Commuter lot in Fredericksburg, VA, at 4:40am and arrives at Campus by 5:40am. Homebuyer Education and Counseling is a Great Step for Aspiring Homeowners

The desire for homeownership in America remains high. In a 2017 NeighborWorks America survey, 93 percent of respondents said homeownership is important, very important or the most important. Homeownership is important to our economy, our families and our communities and a key vehicle for wealth accumulation. Census data cited in the 2017 National Association of Real Estate Brokers (NAREB) State of Housing in Black America report says that 69 percent of an American house-hold’s net worth is attributable to the net equity in their home. Becoming a homeowner is an exciting journey, and preparation is a key to success. Home-buyer education and counseling agencies are important resources to help aspiring homeowners prepare for and navigate the homebuying process to be-come sustainable homeowners. Through education and understanding of what to expect, homebuyers can get in a home and be successful homeowners over their lifetime. Homebuyer counseling offers one-on-one sessions with a HUD-approved counselor who tailors interactions to the prospective homebuyer’s situation and homeownership needs. Counseling helps prospective homebuyers gain confidence and information needed to take the next step toward buying a home with activities that include budgeting, identifying credit challenges and guidance to improve their credit score, debt reduction strategies and helping to determine afford-ability based on income and debt. Counseling also helps to dispel common myths about obtaining a mortgage loan, like “a 20 percent down payment is required to own a home.” That is not true and holds many homebuyers back from making the step forward and actually applying for a mortgage. Homebuyer education focuses on the basic concepts of homeownership but is not specific to a transaction. Also provided by a HUD-approved agency, topics covered in these classes include the homebuying process, how to maintain a home and the importance of good credit. Homebuyer education classes can be helpful for aspiring homeowners who have been approved for a loan but need information on better understanding the process to achieve and sustain homeownership. At Wells Fargo we believe in the value homebuyer education and counseling can bring to those seeking homeownership. It’s a significant component of our $60 billion lending commitment to increase African-American homeownership by 2027. In the commitment we pledged to dedicate $15 million to support initiatives for homebuyer education and counseling for African-American families. In our first year, we have provided more than $1.8 million toward this goal in the first year. Wells Fargo also collaborates with a number of agencies to bring homebuyer education and counseling into communities across the country. Here in Washington, D.C., Wells Fargo has been a sponsor of the DC Housing Expo hosted by DC Housing and Community Development and the Greater Washington Urban League for the past eight years. Homebuyer education is a requirement of the NeighborhoodLIFT program, a national collaboration between Wells Fargo and NeighborWorks America that also provides down payment assistance grants. It’s important to us at Wells Fargo that our customers are successful homeowners.

And we believe that homebuyer education and counseling should be components of the homeowner-ship journey, especially for first-time homebuyers.

22nd Annual Bethesda Row Arts Festival Shopping, Music, Food and More!

“Taste of” Luncheon at Fall NIH Research Festival

Join us on Saturday, October 12th from 11am – 6pm and Sunday, October 13th from 10am – 5pm for a wonderful fall weekend where the Bethesda Row is turned into a lively fine art gallery featuring museum quality work of 190 juried artists from around the country. For sale will be the finest in: ceramics, drawings, fabrics, glass, graphics, jewelry, metalwork, paintings, pastels, photography, printmaking, sculpture, wood and mixed media. Widely recognized as the best fine arts festival in the area, the Bethesda Row Arts Festival has been recognized as one of the top 25 fine art shows in the United States, and the event will benefit the NIH Charities. Festival activities will include an Art Sale benefitting the Charities, artist demonstration tent, children’s art activities, live acoustic stage performances, street performers, and high-quality outdoor food vendors. This outdoor event is held rain or shine on Bethesda Row, located on Woodmont and Bethesda Avenues and Elm Street, east of Arlington Road. The Technical Sales Association (TSA) will host the 2019 Fall NIH Research Festival Tent show in Lot 10H outside of Bldg. 10 South on Thursday, September 12th and Friday, September 13th. A large group of exhibitors will display stateof-the-art equipment supplies and services by leading regional and national biomedical research suppliers. Join the R&W for the “Taste of” portion of the event on Thursday, September 12th from 11:30am – 2pm. Participating restaurants are being finalized and will be announced in the September R&W Newsletter. On Friday, September 13th three to be determined food trucks will be serving lunch from 11am – 2pm.

The day begins BRIGHT and EARLY departing from Mt. View Middle School at 7am sharp and returning around 11pm. The National Eye Institute (NEI) is leading the 2019 NIH Combined Federal Campaign (CFC). The NIH CFC Kickoff will be held on Wed., October 16th from 11am - 1pm in front of Bldg. 1. Join NIH Leadership and special guests in support of the CFC and Show Some Love to your favorite CFC charity. There will be music, charities you can support, and great food for sale from some of the top DC-area food trucks. The CFC is one of the largest and most successful workplace fundraising drives in the world and NIH is excited to kick off its 2019 season of giving.
