Virtual Fitness Descriptions:

All levels are welcome!

Strength & Stability | FOCUS: Lower Body with Shannon: The lumbar spine, transversus abdominis, psoas, and the oblique muscles are responsible for initiating lower body movement. Participants will engage in instruction as to proper alignment of the spine for lower body functional movement and perform strengthening exercises for these muscles. Remain strong and stable as you age! Attendees will need light to heavy hand weights.

Pilates + Barre on the Wall with Charissa: Vary the mundane, get leaner with Pilates + Barre training! The benefits of mind-body connection are endless! In this class, participants will activate the brain with concentration, rhythmic movements, and visuals designed for mastery of each exercise. Elements like precision, breath and flow are important in properly executing exercises. Mat suggested.

Cardio + Core Mobility with Ashley: Crank up the heart rate and keep fit with Cardio + Core Mobility! Remaining upright for the duration of the class, participants will perform cardiovascular and core exercises in intervals of 30 seconds of work followed by 10-second intervals of recovery. By performing exercises in short bursts, the capacity of the heart increases as well as benefits to arteries and blow flow. Prepare to execute exercises like high knees, jumping jacks and squats to name a few!

Stretch + Strength in the Chair with Charissa: Simply put, the body is made to move! According to the American Heart Association, “…80% of all U.S jobs are predominantly sedentary…” placing workers at “increased risk for cardiovascular and metabolic morbidity and mortality.” This class focuses on exercises and stretches that can be performed at a desk or while sitting for health of the heart, joints, bones and muscles. Don’t miss the opportunity to get moving, even while sitting! A stationary chair will be utilized.

Standing Abs with Ashley: Perform abdominal exercises while upright! That’s right! In intervals of 45 seconds of work followed by 15-second intervals of recovery, participants will engage in twisting, bending and flexion movements that are designed to strengthen the abdominal and core muscles. Go into the weekend abdominally strong!

Iso Core + Mobility with Charissa: This class will mainly focus on isotonic movements like squats, bicep curls and deadlifts, but will end with short isometric pauses to increase stability and control! Using light to heavy hand weights, participants can expect to perform exercises in sets of 8 repetitions. Remaining upright for the duration of class, attendees can expect a low-impact, high-intensity workout!

Yoga Strength with Shannon (In-Person Only) Bldg. 53: It’s a fusion of Yoga and strength training! An untraditional practice, participants can expect to engage in Yoga asanas (poses) designed to increase flexibility and strength. Hathabased, transitions and poses will be guided by breathing and mind-body connection. Open the week with awareness and intention! A Yoga mat is suggested.

Bodyweight Tabata with Shannon: Take fat burning to new heights with Tabata! By working as hard as possible for 20second intervals, with short, 10-second recovery periods, fat oxidation can continue for 24-48 hours post-workout! Participants execute exercises designed to activate the major muscle groups using one’s own bodyweight. Mat suggested.

Hips + Bands with Ashley: Create resistance that’s easy on the joints with fitness bands! Participants will need light to strong loop bands to engage in varying exercises for hip strengthening. Strengthening the hips is important to functional movement, posture, and preventing lower back pain. In intervals of 45 seconds of work followed by 15second intervals of recovery, participants will execute lowimpact, high-intensity exercises. A mat is suggested

Towel Stretch with Charissa: It’s ba-ack! Using a towel or strap increases the ability to deepen a stretch when tight or inflexible. Attendees will utilize a light towel that spans both arms’ length to perform stretches for the total body! This gentle and calming class comes just before the week’s end! Stretching is important in lengthening muscles and increasing joint range of motion for ease of daily activities. Grab a mat and get relaxed!

Spring Cycle Challenge with Charissa (In-Person Only)

RKL II Rm. 220-B: With new seasons come new challenges! During this ride, participants will engage in high-intensity interval sprints, hills, mixed terrain interspersed with short recovery periods. Aerobic and anaerobic thresholds will be reached! A sweat towel is suggested.

Core on the Floor with Shannon: Get core strong! The core consists of the abdominal muscles, muscles of the spine, the pelvic floor and the diaphragm. The core essentially keeps a person upright. This class focuses on activating core muscles for strength and stability. A mat is suggested

Total Body Tabata with Ashley: Using moderate to heavy weights and a mat, prepare for a 360-degree, total body workout! Consisting of cardiovascular, core, and strength exercises, no muscle group will be ignored! Intervals of 20 seconds of high-intensity movement followed by 10-second intervals of recovery will be explored. A mat is suggested.

H.I.I.T + Foam Roll with Shannon: The hallmark of H.I.I.T (High Intensity Interval Training) is repeated, difficult bouts of work interspersed with short recovery periods. Participants of this class will engage in exercises consisting of 30-second bursts of maximum effort, followed by 10-second recovery cycles. It’s a total body workout not to miss! Brief periods of foam rolling will also be incorporated. Medium to heavy weights and a foam roller suggested.

Mobility Strength + Stretch with Charissa: Remaining upright for the duration of the class, participants will focus on posture and alignment in achieving balance, flexibility and strength. Various exercises will be performed to challenge novice and seasoned fitness enthusiasts! This is a low-impact, high-intensity experience not to miss! A mat is optional.

Yoga with Shannon (In-Person Only) Bldg. 53: Sync the breath and the body with this Hatha-based practice! Participants will perform Yoga asanas (poses) that are designed to increase flexibility, joint range of motion, and body awareness. A mind-body class, participants are encouraged to move with intention, and find proper alignment- with guidance from the instructor-for each pose. A Yoga mat is suggested.

Yoga + Foam Roll with Shannon: Traditional yogic stretches combined with foam rolling will guide this class. Self-myofascial release using a foam roller is an effective way to decrease muscle pain, stress and injury. Using a foam roller and a sticky mat, participants will engage in foam rolling for most of the major muscle groups. Stretches for the major and minor muscle groups will be performed.

Power of 12: Upper Body with Ashley: Give the upper body the attention it deserves! Perform exercises in repetitions of 12 for the shoulders, biceps, triceps, abdominals and back! In 45-second bursts of hard work followed by 15-second intervals of recovery, participants will utilize moderate to heavy weights to achieve muscle strengthening and fat oxidation at rest! For the duration of this class participants will remain upright. Commit and get fit!

Abs, Glutes + Thighs with Charissa: Ready to get sculpted and strong?! In repetitions of 2 sets of 12, participants will perform intense exercises for the abdominals, gluteal muscles and thighs. Executed entirely on the floor, this low-impact, H.I.I.T. class will increase heart rate and fat burn at rest! A mat and light to moderate hand weights will be utilized.

Bootcamp Circuit with Charissa (In-Person Only) RKL II Rm. 220-B: Where is the superhero in you?! Guided by authentic Bootcamp training, attendees will move through stations and execute exercises in intervals of 60 seconds, with a 15-second break between stations. This total body workout is for the soldier within!

Yoga for Athletes: FOCUS | Balance, Flexibility & Strength with Shannon: A Yoga mat and block will be utilized to achieve a total body experience during this Yoga practice. Designed to propel novice to experienced Yogis through various asanas (poses), mind-body connection will be explored for maximal awareness and enlightenment! A Yoga mat and block(s) are suggested.

Power of 12: Lower Body with Ashley: Don’t forget the lower body! Strengthening the lower body is important to quality of life and daily functional movement. Using moderate to heavy weights, participants will perform exercises in intervals of 45 seconds of work followed by 15second intervals of recovery. Repetitions of 12 will guide this class. Close the week with vigor!

Step & Strength with Shannon: Using a step and light to heavy weights, attendees will achieve cardiovascular and strength benefits by engaging in this 1980s-inspired workout! Participants will need a step and a set of light to heavy weights to get the most out of this 1980s inspired workout! Basic aerobic step sequences will be performed. Begin the week by reconnecting to the spunk of a past fitness flame!

Power Push Tabata with Charissa: Prepare to break a sweat! This high-intensity interval training class is all about strengthening to induce fat oxidation and increase overall cardiovascular health! Intervals of 20 seconds of hard work followed by 10-second intervals of rest will guide this class. Grab at least 3 sets of moderate to heavy weights to participate!

Core Intensive with Shannon (In-Person Only) Bldg. 53: Increase abdominal strength with this crucial core workout! Using light to heavy weights, participants can expect to engage in intense core training exercises performed on the floor. Achieve stronger abdominals for the support of the low back through a series of weight bearing exercises! Get “coreageous”! A mat is suggested.

Balance Sculpt with Ashley: Get balanced! Increase stability for improved life quality and life expectancy. According to the NIH, falls are the leading cause of injury-related death for adults 65 years and older. And at least 48 percent of young adults (18-45 years) have a falling event 3 times a year. Focus on balance with 45-second intervals of work followed by 15second intervals of recovery or rest. A mat and moderate to heavy weights will be utilized during this low-impact, highintensity class experience!

Stability + Weights + Bands with Shannon: Loop bands, light to heavy weights, and a mat are needed to engage in this total body, high-intensity interval workout! The core muscles are integral to achieving stability. Attendees can expect to move through timed exercises for daily functional benefits and utilize props for a stronger body. Don’t miss this calorieblasting experience that could energize the weekend!

Standing Cardio with Ashley: Perform cardio exercises for health of the heart! By remaining upright, a steady heart rate will be maintained. A low-impact workout, intervals of 30 seconds of work followed by 10-second intervals of recovery will be explored. It’s cardiovascular bliss!

During this Coronavirus Pandemic the NIH Blood Bank is open Monday thru Friday 7:30am – 4pm for donations by appointment only! -The Donor Center at Fishers Lane is open for platelet and double red cell donations. The NIH R&W is excited to announce the return of its corporate sponsor fairs in 2023. The first fair will take place on Tuesday, April 25th from 10am – 2pm on the South Lawn at Bldg. 10 in association with our Community Market and Food Trucks Learn about a variety of local business and discounts some have to offer. Participants at these fairs include KitchenSaver, The Adventure Park at Sandy Spring, Southern Management, Euro Motorcars, JBG Smith, RK Tongue Insurance, The Barrett, Assisting Hands Home Care, The National Aquarium, Wolf Trap, Super Windows, Omega Travel, State Farm, Gutter Helmet, ServPro, NIH Federal Credit Union, Sunrise Senior Living and more Make sure to visit the vendors to be entered for door prizes. Memorial Service for Barbara Cole

A memorial service will be held for Barbara Cole at 12pm on Saturday, April 15th in Rockville Presbyterian Church (215 W. Montgomery Ave, Rockville, MD 20850) followed by a reception at the church. Barbara, who passed in 2020, was the R&W store manager in Bldg. 31 for 27 years. Memorial contributions may be made to Special Love - Camp Fantastic.

Seeking New NIH R&W Board Members

The NIH R&W is looking for new board members. Do you have an interest in helping your employee morale association grow? Bring your thoughts and fresh ideas to board meetings and help the NIH R&W Association reach new levels. New members would be required to participate in bi-monthly meetings of up to one hour, provide ideas to improve the R&W, assist in growing the R&W’s presence throughout NIH and build R&W membership. NIH Philharmonia Presents “Devils & Heroes” – April 29th

Join the NIH Philhmonia for their presentation of “Devils & Heroes” at St. Elizabeth Catholic Church (917 Montrose Rd –Rockville, MD) on Saturday, April 29th at 7:30pm. Interested in Learning How to Sail?

The NIHSA Basic Training Sailing Course will be offered Tuesday nights 7pm – 9pm, April 4th – May 23rd. Visit the NIHSA website for details. The in-class sessions will be held in person (location to be determined), and the on-board (on the water) sessions at the Selby Bay Sailing Center, on the South River near Edgewater, MD. Participants must be able to provide or arrange for their own transportation to the onboard training sessions. If you are interested in this course and would like more info email the club.

Vanpooling Is Economical and Environmentally Friendly

Openings are available in the vanpool from Hagerstown and Frederick to Bethesda. This 10-passenger van is leased thru Enterprise Vanpool The vanpool leaves Hagerstown Park and Ride at 5:30am for a 7am to 4pm work shift on Bethesda Campus. The van leaves NIH at 4:15pm Monday – Friday. Fulltime NIH Employees who turn in their parking hangers are eligible for the Transhare Program. Contractors are welcome but must make subsidy payments thru the Enterprise portal each month. If interested contact Rich Buckland at 304-582-3113

April 27th - NIH Earth Day and Take Your Child to Work Day Activities

The Bethesda campus will host an in-person event on April 27th from 10am - 2pm on the lawn in front of Bldg. 1. The event will occur in conjunction with the NIH Take Your Child to Work Day, so activities will be available for both NIH staff and their children. The full activity details are available below. Unless specified otherwise, all activities will run from 10am - 2pm. We hope to see you at the NIH Earth Day event!

• Earth Day Pledge Tree - Protect the environment with the ORF/ORS Green Team's Earth Day Pledge Tree!

• Live Animals from Local Wildlife Societies - See snakes, turtles and more with their trained handlers from local wildlife and learn how these animals are affected by humans and how we can keep their habitats healthy.

• Investigating Radioactivity - Discover the properties of radioactive materials and the effects of radiation. Learn how to detect radiation around you, including where you might find it and how to protect yourself from it!

• Composting Fun with Jeremy Wormy - Join NICHD to learn about worms and why they enjoy compost. You may even speak with Jeremy Wormy! There will be a few giveaways

• Waste at the NIH – Learn about waste management at NIH while playing a fun recycling game! NIH staff will describe waste and recycling programs available on the NIH campus and answer questions. Grab a recycling bin for your office!

• Electric Vehicle Extravaganza! - See a display of electric vehicles and learn about their features. The owners of the vehicles are NIH staff that are very knowledgeable regarding the logistics of commuting to the NIH with an electric vehicle and will answer questions about owning or operating them!

• Seedling Giveaway - Claim a free seedling to plant at home, sponsored by the NIH Federal Credit Union. There are a limited number of seedlings that will be distributed on a firstcome, first-served basis beginning at 10am.

• Shop Like an Expert – Learn how an expert shops at the NIH Supply Center for green products to protect the environment!

• Buzzing with Honey Bees - Get an up-close view of honey bees with an observation hive from the Montgomery County Beekeepers Association.

• Win the Recycling Game! - Discover which items can be recycled with the Montgomery County Department of Environmental Protection. Play educational games related to waste and recycling to win a prize!

• Composting with the Compost Crew - Join the Compost Crew to learn about composting thru a matching game! Correctly identify which items are trash, recycling, and compost!

• Biking with a Purpose – Pedal a bicycle and power a radio playing your favorite tunes. Biking is a great way to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and fight climate change!

• Guided Tour of the NIH Stream - 11am - 12pm - Learn about the various environmental aspects of the NIH Stream, effects on stormwater management, local wildlife habitats, pollution and more. The tour starts and ends at the flagpole on the lawn in front of Bldg. 1. A virtual tour is available here!

• Earth Day Scavenger Hunt – See if you can complete this environment-themed scavenger hunt on the Bethesda campus during Earth Day (Link coming soon)!

• NIH Community Market – Visit a variety of vendors who participate in the Tuesday NIH market

• Food Trucks – A busy day builds up an appetite. Visit Auntie Anne’s Pretzels and Quinn’s Ice at Bldg. 1 for tasty treats and stop by Bldg. 10, Lot 10H for lunch from Trippy’s Tacos, 2 Bold Chefs and Catalyst Hot Dogs or cool off with Ben & Jerry’s.

• Photo Booth – Take a picture it lasts longer! Stop by the lobby in Bldg. 31 from 10am – 2pm and get pictures of your child or yourself as a reminder of the fun you’ve had all day. Brought to you by the NIH R&W and Contemporaries.

• Virtual Towel Fitness – A bath towel and paper towel are needed for this 30-minute class! Kids will engage in towel activities that are sure to solicit giggles and gasps to catch one’s breath! Ages 6 - 12.

• Because Science DC – Shop science gifts, jewelry, apparel, toys, stationary & more. Because Science will be located outside of the Bldg. 31 Cafeteria.

Spring Bazaar

The R&W will be holding its annual Spring Bazaar on Wednesday, May 10th, just in time for Mother’s Day. Stop by the FAES Terrace in Bldg. 10 between 9am – 2pm to shop from a variety of jewelry and craft vendors including Heart2Fire, Toro Mata, My Buddy’s Nuts, Sparkling Ideas, D’s Exquisite Finds, Rich Arts of Asia and more.

Camp Fantastic BBQ Returns June 13th

The Camps Fantastic BBQ is scheduled to take place on Tuesday, June 13th from 11am – 2pm on the South Lawn of Bldg. 10. We hope you’ll come out to support a great cause, helping send children with cancer to a camp designed specifically for them. We’ll have great food, live music, a vendor fair, the NIH Community Market, and a silent auction. More details will be available in the May R&W Newsletter.
