Elena Šešelgytė

www.elenaseselgyte.com

Elena is a international trained musician with the a lot of experience as a teacher, concert pianist and artistic events organiser. She loves to bring music and arts to the non-traditional places, such as mental hospitals, elderly houses, children day centers. She is passionate about yoga and alpinism. A pianist feels a special connection with the wild nature, where she goes to become inspired for music and inner peace. She adores challenges, both spiritual and physical, that is why she chooses those different and from the first sight incompatible activities to be the basis of her life. Music – as a source of happiness As a pianist I don’t want to limit myself of playing the concerts only in the prestigious concert halls. I truly believe the importance of music for every personality, but mostly for people who are suffering from depression, anxiety, Alzheimer’s disease[1]. Also, for elderly people, children development and coping with stress[2], which is experienced by every human being nowadays. The concept of this project is as follows: 1. I am coming to the hospital/elderly house/day centers/ mental hospitals and propose the repertoire I want to play. 2. I ask to make a list of the patients favourite pieces (pop, rock, classical) which I would include to the repertoire. The list should be done at least a week before. 3. Music here could be considered as medicines, it means it should have a certain purpose for certain group of people. If people are stressed and overwhelmed I would offer simple and uncomplicated harmony music. For people who suffers from depression and anxiety – I would offer meditative, calm and bright music. For children – music, with which it would be easy to dance, sing and move. 4. Concerts and events in the unusual places. In the parks, forests, in the mountains, small villages, nature. People should feel the connection with the beauty through all sensesvision, hearing, smell, touch…

Music and the mood Soothing jangled nerves is one thing; raising sagging spirits, another. Bright, cheerful music can make people of all ages feel happy, energetic, and alert, and music even has a role in lifting the mood of people with depressive illnesses. An authoritative review of research performed between 1994 and 1999 reported that in four trials, music therapy reduced symptoms of depression, while a fifth study found no benefit. A 2006 study of 60 adults with chronic pain found that music was able to reduce pain, depression, and disability. And a 2009 meta-analysis found that music-assisted relaxation can improve the quality of sleep in patients with sleep disorders.[3] Music as medicine What if music could help you manage pain and treat anxiety? As it turns out, this is not idle fantasy but something that scientists, doctors, and artists at the cutting edges of their fields are putting into practice. The connection between music and the brain and the very real possibility that music is part of the solution to intractable problems like chronic pain and cancer. The researchers found that listening to and playing music increase the body's production of the antibody immunoglobulin A and natural killer cells — the cells that attack invading viruses and boost the immune system's effectiveness. Music also reduces levels of the stress hormone cortisol. "This is one reason why music is associated with relaxation," Levitin says.[4] Concerts, too? But there was also an unexpected finding: attendance at cultural events had a surprisingly powerful effect on mortality. In all, people who attended concerts and plays rarely or never were 1.57 times more likely to die during the study period than people who attended frequently. Occasional concertgoers were in between. The apparent protection conferred by cultural events was not explained by differences in income, social networks, or education. The investigators speculate that music may stimulate specific regions of the brain, causing favorable changes in hormone levels or immune function. Or perhaps concertgoers have their own version of a religious experience as they take in what Shakespeare called "music from the spheres." Even now, however, people who like to go to cultural events may get a little extra pleasure from the hope that something enjoyable may actually be healthful.[5]

An unconventional suggestion to tackle unemployment ●

Published on September 16, 2017 -

https://www.linkedin.com/pulse/unconventional-suggestion-tackle-unemployment-rita-isiba/

Rita Isiba ● It's incredible how high the unemployment rates have persisted in the Mediterranean basin. Without an end in sight, the percentage of those out of work has steadily gone up, despite the opportunities for growth in the agricultural sector. Particularly, countries rich in biodiversity, including Greece, Spain, Italy, Croatia, and Cyprus have untapped potential to make their agricultural output great again. Instead of crafting work relief programs, these countries are misguided through desperate actions of claiming loans to fund more debt and social welfare initiatives. Do not get me wrong; I believe that social welfare is useful for those not able to work and in danger of falling into the poverty trap. However, a nation-wide work relief program would be more beneficial in the long run for the individual and society. Millions of long-term unemployed Mediterranean would preserve their dignity and working skills. In order to address this unfortunate economic phenomenon, the high-performing corporations could exercise impactful corporate social responsibility (CSR) programs across geographical borders. By joining forces with the public sector of countries plagued with high unemployment rates, CSR programs can be designed to establish long-term work- and skills development projects, particularly in the fields of sustainable agribusiness and GreenTech. Perhaps the European Commission and its member-states could mandate an incentive-driven program for enterprises of all sizes to create employment and stem a tide of societal degeneration? I know the cynics reading this would scream this proposal as a breeding ground for fraud and corruption. But realise this: Corruption is a byproduct of Public-Private Partnership (PPP), and only behavioural reform and possibly technology can banish fraudulent activities. Your argument is welcomed in this respect. A work relief program initiated by CSR and powered through PPP may force high initial investments with no immediate returns, but in the long run, the benefits include high national output, healthy competition, greater consumer spending, preserved self-respect for those out of work, and more. Just a thought. #APHROPEANVIEWS

Steve Hartley

Experienced Kids’ Camp Director Explorer Summer Kids’ Camps, Lake Bohinj, Slovenia

Every summer parents and children alike are faced with a problem – finding an experience that is not only fun, challenging, unique and exciting but also educational, multi-cultural and life changing. I and my summer camps are the tools that bring this all together. I help families discover the advantages of active learning in English throughout the summer, and demonstrate the importance of learning and growing Real-Life skills that support children in building for the future. In addition to this, I consider myself to be the key that helps children unlock their own inner confidence and happiness, self-belief, maturity and personal responsibility. At present I am based at Lake Bohinj, Slovenia with Explorer Summer Kids' Camps, where I lead a team of native English speakers in delivering an extremely professionally run outdoors experience for children from around the world aged 6 – 17.

Experience Explorer Summer Kids’ Camp Director Dates Employed Aug 2015 – Present. ● Planning, arranging, and organising summer program for over 120 campers in the age range from 6 to 17 years of age for a week to 2 week long summer overnight camps at Lake Bohinj, Slovenia.

● Training, overseeing, and leading a small team of staff members in the day-to-day function of camps. ● Developing, and implementing core business plan including marketing, brand expansion and social media strategy.

● Establishing, and enhancing positive communication with parents by creating a multitude of channels through which honest discussions occur.

● ● ● ● ●

Empowering campers to build their Emotional Intelligence. Increased registration by 120% in 3 years. Created formal partnerships with agencies in Russia, Croatia, Ukraine and Poland. Supported in achieving a 81% return rate of campers. Reached campers from more than 17 different countries

Explorer Summer Kids’ Camps is an international summer English camp at Lake Bohinj, Slovenia for children aged 7 – 17 with a Junior and Senior program. We focus on building real-life skills through a vast array of outdoor and indoor activities and games completely run by native English speakers. No books. No classrooms. No lectures. No boredom. No phones! Just real-life English in real-life situations with real-life FUN! All campers are challenged to step outside their comfort zones and realise their full potential. To do this, Explorer Camps creates a warm, welcoming environment where campers can be themselves without fear of judgment. We call it a camper-centred program, the 81% of returning campers call it the best summer ever! Activities Explorer Camps offer more than 30 outdoor activities including canoeing, kayaking, zip lining, biking, hiking, stand up paddling, summer tobogganing, survival courses, raft games, archery, water games, team building, rock climbing, slackline course and orienteering. What makes these activities especially unique is that they are run them through task based teaching, an approach that builds camper independence, organisational and thinking skills amongst others. There's a reason Explorer Camps has a 81% return rate of campers ..... Building Life Skills Did you know over 20% of young people today in Europe are unemployed with 1 in 3 large companies believing this to be due to a lack of effective employment skills? Or that experts believe that stress levels of children are the same as psychiatric patients from the 1950s? Or that Emotional Intelligence is actually a better indicator of success than IQ? Our Life Skills Program tackles these issues by building essential life skills based on 21st Century Skills that are needed for both academic success and future employment by engaging campers in fun and challenging activities. It helps camps focus on building Real-Life Skills, Real-Life Growth and Real-Life Experiences. Family Focused and Experienced Staff Our camp team boasts English native speaker counsellors from around the world who share the samegoal: to make a positive and long-lasting effect on every single camper. Each staff member brings years of experience and maturity to Explorer Camps with all of them being over the age of 30 and having worked with children for much of their adult lives. There is a camper to counsellor ratio of a maximum 6:1 which ensures that staff can provide a very personal experience for all campers.
