Culture...

(Latin: cultura, lit. "cultivation"[1]) is a modern concept based on a term first used in classical antiquity by the Roman orator Cicero: "cultura animi" (cultivation of the soul). This non-agricultural use of the term "culture" re-appeared in modern Europe in the 17th century referring to the betterment or refinement of individuals, especially through education. During the 18th and 19th century it came to refer more frequently to the common reference points of whole peoples, and discussion of the term was often connected to national aspirations or ideals. Some scientists such as Edward Tylor used the term "culture" to refer to a universal human capacity.

In the 20th century, "culture" emerged as a central concept in anthropology, encompassing the range of human phenomena that cannot be directly attributed to genetic inheritance. Specifically, the term "culture" in American anthropology had two meanings: / the evolved human capacity to classify and represent experiences with symbols, and to act imaginatively and creatively; and / the distinct ways that people, who live differently, classified and represented their experiences, and acted creatively.[2] Hoebel describes culture as an integrated system of learned behavior patterns which are characteristic of the members of a society and which are not a result of biological inheritance.[3] Distinctions are currently made between the physical artifacts created by a society, its so-called material culture, and everything else,[4] the intangibles such as language, customs, etc. that are the main referent of the term "culture".

Nigel Stonham arrived in Vienna April 1st 1999 to set up home, and in September he started FIrst Tuesday Vienna. This monthly event connected ideas with money, dot com entrepreneurs with venture capitalists. In November 2005 he started Vienna Hub, connecting people with passion across art commerce sport and education. The core idea is more artistic creativity into business and more business sense for artists. In 2008 he launched international kulturverein blue sky stuff, to inspire and motivate people to find and follow their passion.

In 2013 he launched st!artists, combining many of the ideas from the last years in Vienna and as a platform to nurture artists and entrepreneurs.

The event Die Welt zu Gast in Passau – Festival der Kulturen 29. - 31. Mai 2014 offers a chance to profile a number of these artists and entrepreneurs in Passau before, during, and after the event. The project through its installations and performances explores the meanings and interpretations of culture, nationality and being.The focus is collaboration between artists and entrepreneurs of Austrian, British and Bavarian culture, through that being their home base. This raises many questions for you to consider, for example, what core culture is expressed by an American artist who has lived in Austria for 30 years and toured the world performing in many countries? An African fashion designer studying in Austria since 2003 who intends to become a fashion entrepreneur in Lagos. A 12 year old asylum seeker with a dream of becoming a football star, and a back up plan of studying mechanics since he realises it is very hard to succeed in football. How do these people feel compared to those who grow up and live within the same region their entire lives?
