5Colours1World is an intercultural organization whose focus is on youth empowerment and active media training. The training projects and workshops we facilitate are centered around cultural diversity, interreligious dialogue, civic journalism, media literacy, gender equality, active nonviolence and peacebuilding, poverty eradication, racism, xenophobia, Fairtrade and environmental sustainability.

We also consult and cooperate with local, national and international NGOs who work in these areas of interest and specialization in addition to Nobel Peace Prize winners (Adolfo Perez Esquivel & Mairead Corrigan Maguire) and other individuals such as Dr. Jane Goodall and Werner Lampert, pioneer of organic farming in Austria, who work creatively and nonviolently to generate positive initiatives for active social and environmental change. To date, Gregory and Stuart have cooperated and worked with The International Fellowship of Reconciliation (I.F.O.R), The Jane Goodall Institute, The Erste Foundation, WienXtra, The American Friends Service Committee (AFSC), The Wi’am Center, KonfliktKultur and the The Council of Europe’s Pestalozzi Program.

Stuart’s career began within the UK TV industry at Sky Television and then as a freelance location sound mixer for various international television programmes and short films. This followed the completion of a Bachelor degree in Professional Media: Video from the University of Gloucestershire. A diverse and multiskilled expansion into camera operating, video editing and other graphical post production techniques and a move to Vienna led to Stuart volunteering as mixed media expert, coordinator and a trainer of I.F.O.R Austria’s Global Education English Project Weeks.

Gregory Kennedy-Salemi studied computer science and international relations at a private university in Chicago while simultaneously working as a computer systems manager at MTI Technology. Gregory represented his university at the United Nations in Geneva after which he began his tenure in 2003 as a volunteer global education coordinator, trainer and mixed media specialist for I.F.O.R Austria. During this time, Gregory was invited to speak at the United Nations on the importance of Global Education. Gregory also worked as a technical consultant and web developer at I.F.O.R’s International Secretariat in Holland.

He also produces and directs commercial video projects for young, innovative start-up companies in central Europe.

Dinner in the dark

By Mary Penman Vienna based company "Vier Sinne" offer a unique experience with their "Dinner in the Dark" evenings.

The name says it all as guests are invited to enjoy a normal restaurant experience, with one major difference - it is pitch black.

Stepping through the first of two heavy velvet curtains which act as a kind of ‘light lock’, diners are thrust into another domain, and feel suspended in an unknown space as their ability to see is taken away. Most people depend on sight as their primary sense for orientation and the gathering of information, so the removal of this takes a little getting used to.

I attended "Dinner in the dark" earlier this month, and in these initial moments was very glad of the reassuring presence of my guide, who carefully directed me to my seat. After a few minutes of automatically seeking for any possible light source, and opening my eyes as wide as they would go, I soon discovered that it made no difference. It was dark, pitch black, and I could see nothing.

Once this initial realisation is made, one no longer concentrates on the absence of sight, but on the presence of so many other things. The clinking of cutlery, the sound of glass on glass as diners dare to toast, energetic chatter as everyone susses out what objects they can feel in front of them, and what might be arriving on their tables as the night progresses. It is astonishing how detailed a picture of the surroundings one can build up simply through feeling, listening and smelling.

The four course meal presented on regular plates, and to be cut up and eaten with normal cutlery – although abandoning this for your hands is an accepted and useful alternative – is capably delivered by one of two blind waiting staff. "Vier Sinne" only employs partially or fully blind people in this role, so as to add authenticity to the whole experience, and to re-assure guests that the guides know exactly what they are doing.

There is no menu to chose from, although guests can specify whether they would like meat, fish, or a vegetarian option for their main course. In between courses guests can entertain themselves with various sense-related challenges such as identifying different smells, or using touch to recognise a variety of objects.

The team working at "Vier Sinne" make sure that the novel evening is also a pleasurable one, offering guests a glass of sekt or fruit juice on arrival, and a cocktail to finish off the evening. These drinks are enjoyed in the light, and give everyone a chance to chat about their experiences, get to know the blind guides, and see the food which they have just eaten.

Emanuel Frass, who opened the restaurant just two years ago, explains that he wants to introduce people to the many dimensions of sense and perception: "If guests are personally moved and affected by the evening, and all their senses awakened, then we are achieving our aims. The evening should provoke people to think about all the facilities of perception available to them, and point out that there are many ways to observe and take in the surroundings, aside from just looking at it."

Tickets for "Dinner in the Dark" cost 69 Euros and must be booked in advance. The venue is just around the corner from the U3 underground stop Rochusgasse.

What began as merely a thought about the space I occupy with my pinkish-self has turned into a call to unite 1,000,000 people around the globe. EVERYONE IS INVITED!! One million people involved – creating “IN the PINK” opportunities for themselves and others as this ongoing multimedia event unfolds.

The events start in November with my exhibition PINKSpace at Blanc Gallery in the Bronzeville neighborhood of Chicago where IN THE PINK: the 1,000,000 people art project will officially launch . This large scale project both coincides with and strengthens the concept of PINKSpace.

So as not to confuse matters, there are two parts to my project description here. First is the exhibit, PINKSpace a body of work that I have been passionately pursuing for the past year. And second, IN THE PINK: the 1,000,000 people art project, which is a long-term adventure. In the Pink (the project) was ignited by thoughts I had while I created the art for this exhibit.

An interactive website is in the works where 1,000,000 global citizens will post projects they are passionate about – projects that can make a difference. The website will be a database for networking across disciplines (ie: artists and scientists, or community organizers or environmental activists, doctors, teachers the list is endless but you get the idea), a central source for curating exhibitions and bringing people together for residencies, dialog and symposiums.

Today, it is most commonly used to mean in perfect condition especially in relationship to health. The project, In the Pink: the million people art project is a call for the global community at this fragile yet pinnacle moment in our collective history to come together in partnership, creativity and passion to create a healthier, more perfect condition for themselves and others.

This project has roots in a concept slogan from the 1970’s; “THINK globally, ACT locally.” As global consciousness increases through the expansion of technology, it is easier than ever before to imagine how we are all connected and perhaps easier to see and understand how small thoughtful acts can make a world of change- turning problems into opportunities for global solutions.
