A Message from the Advancement Team

Welcome to the warmest school in the world (even though it might snow while you're here)!

Nido de Aguilas is more than just a school, it is a family unit made up of over 50 nationalities and an alumni network of 9,000 and growing.

If you're new to Chile, or have lived here all your life, we have some fantastic suggestions of things to do, see, taste and experience in this handy little guide.

We have randomly selected Nido teachers, staff, board members and parents from multiple nationalities to help you navigate this beautiful country and culture.

Arturo has been in Nido since April 1, 1967 - over 52 years. He is an invaluable member of the Nido community. Besides being a full time janitor in the High School he has been Santa Claus for many years for the Elementary School students during their Christmas celebration day, helps organize the Fiesta Huasa, and likes to ride his horses during the day.

“The best place to enjoy la cordillera is in the hills and mountains that surround Nido where I organize the Senior barbeque after their hike every year. You get to see a big part of Santiago such as El Arrayán, Farellones, San Carlos de Apoquindo and the downtown.”

“If you want to eat a good empanada you have to go to the restaurant Doña Tina at Avenida Raul Labbé with San Enrique.”

“A picada in Lo Barnechea for good chicken is the restaurant Pollo al Coñac.”

“Corpartes is a cultural center in one of Chile's primary business districts which includes a world-class theater for performing arts, a gallery for art exhibitions and access to its unique permanent collection.”

“For a weekend adventure I recommend Yerba Loca which has 34 kms of non-technical hiking trails to explore nature in the mountains around Santiago. It is a 45 minute drive.

The light hiking is great for novice and young hikers.”

“Visit Miraolas Restaurant if you are looking for fresh fish and seafood in a relaxed atmosphere.”

“The best museum in Santiago is Museo Interactivo Mirador (MIM), a hands-on science museum, fun for all ages! It's a long way from Lo Barnechea, but worth it. Bring the kids.”

“Needing a sports bar? Flannery's Irish Geo Pub in Las Condes, or California Cantina in Providencia. Fine dining near Nido?

Alongside her family, Teresa loves skiing in Portillo, the oldest ski resort in South America.

Family-friendly, it is located in the Andes and full of activities for its guests to enjoy.

While skiing, the view of the Laguna del Inca, a beautiful lake with crystal blue water, will take your breath away.

“One of my favorite family trips: whale watching in the Strait of Magallanes.

Another place you should definitely explore while in Chile is Aysén.”

“Good pisco Sour? Try “La Mar” located in Nueva Costanera.

Good upscale Nikkei food? Try “Osaka” located in Nueva Costanera.

Good Italian food? Try “La Divina Comida” a quiet family style place owned by a Nido alumni family.

Best Empanadas? Panaderia de lo Barnechea sells empanadas from Amasanderia Rosalia, which are supposed to be the best.”

“Go to the organic market in Vitacura and then hike up the Manquehue mountain to get a stunning view of Santiago when the sky is clear.”

Antonia and her family love to make road trips, either long or just for the day or weekend.

If you ever go to Valparaíso, she highly recommends Hotel Casa Higueras on Cerro Alegre for a delicious lunch on the terrace overlooking the bay.

“In Santa Cruz, you cannot miss the Museo Colchagua, which has a huge collection of fossils, Pre Columbian art, Inca remains, huaso attire and accessories, carriages, jewelry of the Andes, textiles and metals, machinery, and even a reconstruction of the ‘Big Mining Rescue’, among many others.”

“My family and I like to visit the district of Peralillo, located in the province of Colchagua in the region of Libertador Bernardo O’Higgins.”

“Peralillo has multiple activities for families: you can go for a walk in its beautiful hills, feed the animals, sit and watch a sunset, visit their varied vineyards, eat our delicious Chilean food in wonderful restaurants and enjoy the climate. Do not miss it!”

“Lecheria los Maitenes is a fun family activity in that area! Stop by Restaurante Vino Bello for some authentic Italian food in Santa Cruz.”

“We’re only an hour and a half from the coast, so we love driving to Quintay to eat at one of the small seafood restaurants overlooking the little wharf there, while the fisherman and some scuba divers do their thing. Sometimes we go to the Playa Grande to play in the sand and walk to a small cave on the northern end of the beach.”

“For a longer weekend, drive to the Elqui Valley in the Norte Chico, especially in the spring to see the blossoms in the day and the stars there really explode at night without any big cities around.

The Mamalluca Observatory is a great experience for amateur stargazers.”

“And you can't go wrong with a weekend away to the Colchagua Valley.

We've enjoyed tours at Montes, Clos Apalta, Laura Hartwig & Viu Manent (both of these include horse-drawn carriage rides).

At Estampa you can make your own blends and see whose is the best.

At Montgras during harvest time, you can pick your own grapes for some wine-stomping with kids and friends, good times.”

Nido Dictionary “If you want to have some nice Italian food over the weekend, go to Nolita, a restaurant located in Isidora Goyenechea, El Golf.”

Main Groups NPA - Nido Parent Association. An independent, non-profit organization whose aim is to develop community spirit and enhance communication between faculty and parents, while supporting their children’s education.

Booster Club - A group of parents from the NPA that organizes various fundraisers such as popcorn and lemonade sales on Fridays, and concessions at swim meets and cheer/dance tournaments in order to provide recognition banners, travel bags, patches, pins, and more to all those competing in sports, performing arts, and clubs.

“You have to go to Valparaiso.

I think it is an amazing place, full of color and tiny streets decorated with beautiful murals, and hills fully covered in tiny and bright-colored houses. It is very bohemian and artistic, and is considered one of Chile’s Heritage Sites.

In one of the hills, Cerro Florida, you can visit “La Sebastiana,” one of the houses of famous Chilean poet and Nobel Prize winner Pablo Neruda.”

NAA - Nido Alumni Association. Composed of a strong international network of over 9,000 alumni around the world whose main focus is to strengthen bonds within the alumni community, Nido and Lo Barnechea.

Main Events of the Year International Day - A day where students learn about the different cultures and traditions from the various countries represented at Nido in an interactive way. Elementary students begin the day by forming a multicultural parade while Nido parents decorate the classrooms with cultural crafts and special gifts.

Arts in Action - Celebration of the arts and our talented students during May, a month full of rhythm and creativity at Nido. Many concerts, art auctions and Nido Palooza take place during this time.

Fiesta Huasa - An outdoor event celebrated during September, the month of Chile’s Independence Day (Fiestas Patrias), to honor our traditions. Folkloric music and performances featuring our national dance ‘La Cueca,’ rodeo competitions, empanadas, and games are enjoyed by the Nido Community. The Obertura Chilena show also happens during this time inside our theater, and features an art show, musical, dance, and dramatic performances from students and groups all over Chile.

Kermess - Our biggest community event of the year! An international carnival during the month of November, organized by staff, teachers, students, and parents to celebrate the rich culture and diversity that characterizes the Nido community. It is a day filled with international food, games, colors, costumes, and performances where families, teachers, and alumni get together to celebrate our vibrant community on a Saturday.
