THE OFFERING

The Overstreet Mall is a network of skywalks that can be utilized to travel four blocks from E. 5th Street to Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard without ever stepping foot outside. The mall connects major office buildings One and Two Wells Fargo Centers, BB&T Center, One South at the Plaza, Charlotte Plaza, Truist Tower, Bank of America Center, The Omni Hotel, various parking garages, and a plethora of shops and restaurants.

Inspired by the Galleria in Milan and Place Ville-Marie in Montreal,, city planners proposed that Charlotte create a series of tunnels and indoor shopping plazas through uptown that “brightens the daily lives of workers in the office towers and visitors from everywhere by providing them with an attractive environment of their own, remote from the noise and fumes of the street — a zone of restfulness, but also of elegance and vitality in the heart of the city,” according to the Ponte Travers Wolf Plan 1971 proposal.

By 1986, Overstreet Mall was complete. This weather-proofed, climatecontrolled series of tunnels, bridges and walkways wraps 1.5 miles from the Duke Energy Center headquarters building on Stonewall Street to the Hearst Tower on the other side of uptown on Fifth Street.

Recently Renovated

Cousins Properties became owner of what is now One South at the Plaza in 2019, when the company merged with TIER REIT in 2019. During its ownership, TIER REIT and Cousins spent nearly $40 million at the building, including new street-level retail space, renovations to the lobby, plaza, and spec suites, and various back of house systems upgrades and replacements. Another $2.4 million in construction costs are planned in 2021 to demo available tenant suites to shell space.

In 2020, Cousins acquired the BB&T Center 11-story parking deck, which includes 1,520 spaces. The parking deck is attached to One South via the Overstreet Mall.
