Student Dictionaries Presented Nicollet County Election Results to Third Graders by Nicollet Lions The Nicollet Lions visited the third grade classes at Nicollet Public School and Trinity Lutheran School to present Student Dictionaries to each student as part of the Dictionary Project.

The goal of the program is to

assist all students in becoming good writers, active readers, creative thinkers, and resourceful learners by providing them with their own personal dictionaries. The books are a gift to students to use at school and

at home for years to come.

Educators see third grade as a dividing line between learning to read and reading to learn. The Nicollet Lions place a high priority on education.

Focus on AG Basis Level Important for Grain Marketing Decisions

On any given day, farm operators and others can get grain price quotes from the CME Group, also known as the Chicago Board of Trade (CBOT), in “real-time” on their computer or I-phone. Almost as quickly, they can get current and future corn and soybean market price quotes from local grain elevators, ethanol plants, and processing plants. The difference between the local grain price and the CBOT price is known as “basis”. Understanding how basis works and the seasonal trends associated with basis can be an important factor in making corn and soybean marketing decisions.

More specifically, “basis” is the difference between the local grain price quote on a specific date and the CBOT price for the corresponding futures contract month. Local harvest price quotes for corn and soybeans would typically correspond to the December CBOT corn futures price and the November CBOT soybean futures price. By comparison, storing the corn or soybeans after harvest and selling the grain via a forward contract in June or early July the following Summer would have the basis level correspond to the July CBOT corn or soybean futures.

A “narrow” or “tighter” basis means that the local corn or soybean price is getting closer or above the corresponding CBOT price, while a “wide” or “widening” basis reflects local grain prices that have a greater margin below the CBOT prices.

In many years up until recently, farmers in the Upper Midwest dealt with “negative” basis levels, which means than local corn and soybean prices are lower than the corresponding CBOT prices. Areas near the Mississippi River ports or in the Southern U.S more typically have “positive” basis levels, where local grain prices are higher than CBOT prices. However, there have been several areas of the Upper Midwest that have had “positive” basis levels for corn and soybeans at certain times during 2021 and 2022.

While the definition of “basis” may seem quite simple, the dynamics of understanding basis can be quite complex. Basis is variable at different locations and can vary throughout the year, or suddenly be adjusted due to changing dynamics in grain market fundamentals. Following are the main factors that affect basis and can lead to changes in basis levels: • Geographic Variations — Corn and soybean basis can vary greatly from locationto-location, largely dependent on the amount of the local grain production to be used as livestock feed or for use in processing and ethanol production. Therefore, basis levels tend to be wider in Western Minnesota and the Dakota’s than in Southern Minnesota, which has a high amount of livestock production, as well as several ethanol plants and soybean processing plants.

• Transportation Costs — This is the cost of shipping grain from the point of local sale to the final destination point, whether it be for use within the U.S. or transported to the ports to be shipped for exports to other countries. For example, areas that utilize a large per-

centage of the corn and soybean production in the local area have less grain to be transported to the ports or to other portions of the U.S. will typically have a tighter basis level.

In addition, being closer to the Mississippi River, an important port, or a major rail line tends to reduce transportation costs and result in tighter basis ­levels, bot not in all instances.

• Supply and Demand — The overall U.S. grain supply, based on crop production for a given year and grain carryover levels from the previous year, along with the grain usage for livestock feed, processing, ethanol production, and exports, can result in year-to-year variations in basis levels. For example, the 2021 and 2022 corn and soybean basis levels in many areas have been tighter than normal due to the strong demand for exports to China and increased domestic demand for livestock feed and processing. Poor crop yields in a local area can also affect basis in a given year. Local areas that had below average corn yields in either 2021 or 2022 have had a “positive basis” at certain times for corn and soybeans, due to strong local corn demand for feed usage and ethanol production, as well as demand at soybean processing plants.

• Storage and Interest Costs — In a normal year, both CBOT corn and soybean futures prices and cash prices tend to be the lowest at harvest time and then increase by the following Summer. As the time gets closer to the actual date of delivery for the grain, depending on demand, the local grain prices may be stronger than the CBOT prices, resulting in tighter basis levels. The basis situation in the Upper Midwest in 2021 and 2022 has been different than normal due to a combination of lower-thanexpected crop yields, together with strong demand for corn and soybeans. The rapidly increasing interest rates in recent months has resulted in a much higher cost of storing grain until next Summer, which encourages farmers to sell the grain in the next few months in order to take advantage of the current tighter basis levels.

There is currently a wide range in harvest-time corn basis levels the Midwest, depending on 2022 corn yields and demand for corn usage.

For example, in portions on Nebraska and Kansas that were impacted by the drought in 2022, the early November corn basis level is +$.50 to +$1.50 above the nearby CBOT December corn futures price, which is a much different pattern than normal. By comparison, corn basis levels in areas of Southern Illinois are ($.50) to ($1.00) per bushel below December CBOT price, which is a much wider basis level than normal, resulting from reduced barge traffic on the lower Mississippi River due to low water levels. The national average corn basis level on November 3 was +$.05 per bushel above the CBOT December futures price.

LAFAYETTE LEDGER 100 Years Ago – Sept. 9, 1922 A general survey of the grounds at Fort Ridgely during the summer, under the direction of State Auditor R. P. Chase, who has charge of the state parks, may result in restoration of the fort and barracks as they were at the time of the Indian uprising 60 years ago.

A chicken culling demonstration will be given by County Agent Earl Springer at the Julius Hagberg place Saturday, September 16.

Everyone is invited to attend.

Enrollment at the local public school this week reached a total of 79 pupils. It is expected that, at the close of another week, the attendance will increase to 85 or 90.

School work has gone on uninterrupted since registration. The teachers arrived Monday to assume charge of their work. With proper facilities for schoolwork at hand, every indication points to a successful school year.

Dr. G. Rudell of Minneapolis visited at the Emil Larson home.

Dr. Rudell returned recently from a trip abroad where he pursued post graduate work in his profession in Germany.

A.H. Quandt is nursing a rather unusual injury. On his recent visit to Canada, he figured in a minor automobile accident and, as a result, sustained a cut on his left cheek from a broken windshield.

He paid little attention to it, figuring it was of minor consequence, but of late the injury began to cause trouble, the flow of saliva following the outside instead of inside the mouth. A saliva glad was found to be severed.

75 Years Ago – Sept. 12, 1947 The Rev. Alex Schwinn, who has served as pastor of the St. Michael parish at Gaylord for nearly three years, has been assigned as pastor of the St. George Catholic church. He succeeds Father Ortner, who has been at St. George the past several months.

John A. Johnson, sheriff of Nicollet County, must take a taxi or walk, as his automobile is laid up for repairs. Martin Hahn, deputy sheriff, piloted it into a ditch along the Fort Road several days ago.

About $500 damages resulted to the Buick when the car hit a slippery spot and then struck the soft, wet clay bank, causing it to leave the road. Hahn was on a call to Courtland when the accident occurred.

Donald Johnson entertained 18 friends at a birthday party at the home of his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Warren Johnson, celebrating his sixth birthday.

The infant daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Sylvester Schaeffler was baptized Carolyn Jean by Father Leo Krzmarzick at the Church of St. Gregory Sunday. The sponsors were Clarence Schaeffler and Mrs. Eli Teig.

Mrs. Ken Hill and daughter Pamela Jane returned to their home at Los Angeles, California, after spending the summer in Bernadotte at the home of her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Walter Karstad. The trip was made by plane.

Miss Ardis Johnson of here and Miss Bernice Lundgren of Gibbon departed for St. Peter to resume their studies as juniors at Gustavus Adolphus college.

50 Years Ago – Sept. 14, 1972 Bernadotte came out the winner in the playoffs of the Lafayette Softball Association League.

Mr. and Mrs. Gert Ulrich and family have moved into the Earl Johnson home. The Johnsons have moved to Excelsior.

and Mrs. LeRoy Bruss of rural Lafayette, arrived for her freshman year at the Luther College Campus at Decorah, Iowa to begin her undergraduate study.

Arno Bergstrom, Jr., is attending fall quarter of the University of Minnesota Cloquet Forestry Center. He is a senior in the School of Forestry.

Bob Anderson of Chisago City spent a few days at the Merton Johnson home. They all visited at the R.C. Johnson home. Also there were Mr. and Mrs. Calvin Johnson and Benay. Bob also attended Farmfest at Vernon Center.

Harry Mogenson of Chicago is spending a few days at the Ed. Mogenson home in Bernadotte. He attended Farmfest at Vernon Center with Kenneth Martens.

A baby girl was born September 7 to Mr. and Mrs. Tim Sjogren of Lafayette.

Mr. and Mrs. Robert Halverson returned from a six-day trip along the Mississippi River to St. Louis, Missouri. They also visited at Hannibal, the home of Mark Twain, and at the Amana Colony in Iowa.

NICOLLET LEADER 115 Years Ago – Sept. 14, 1907 Mr. and Mrs. August Thom welcomed a young man of 8 lbs. to their home Monday.

Ed. Hopp has purchased the Charles Otto farm and will move on same after October 1.

A.H. Johnson’s boy dislocated his right wrist joint and the doctor had to fix it up.

Fred C. Krohn had a horse fall on him and broke both bones of the left leg near the ankle. Dr. Ray made him feel comfortable.

Chris. Krohn made a mistake and took a head dive from a separator at Rudolph Compart’s and broke both bones of the left wrist and strained his back and the right arm quite badly. Dr. Ray set the bones.

Mr. and Mrs. Herman W. Dallmann say it is a 9 lb. boy Monday morning last.

John Quick bought the John Haack farm in Oshawa township; consideration $6,600.

Barber M.J. Frey has moved his shop and dwelling into the building he recently purchased from the Manitoba land company.

Mr. and Mrs. C.E. Borchardt of Lamberton have arrived here to take possession of the Albert Blank farm near town and be numbered among Nicollet residents.

A.L. Dallmann of Wabasso stopped here a few days to visit relatives. Mr. Dallmann was on his way home from Colorado where he looked up the land situation, but says that he is not greatly impressed with that country and thinks good old Minnesota is good enough for him.

About 30 sportsmen from Mankato, St. Peter, Rochester, and Nicollet attended a hearing in this village last Saturday. At the meeting, it was voted to extend the Swan Lake game refuge south of the Johnson and Anderson Islands 200 feet further out into the lake.

Game Commissioner Carlos Avery of St. Paul was unable to preside at the hearing and had named Game Warden Martin Hahn of St. Peter to fill his place. The new lines of the refuge were posted last Sunday.

85 Years Ago – Sept. 10, 1937 Born, to Mr. and Mrs. Edwin Kastens, an eight pound baby boy at Union hospital in New Ulm on Tuesday.

Mr. and Mrs. Louis Krohn and sons Edgar and Elmo attended the big state fair.

Frank Schuck, Anthony Epper, Reinhard Volk, and Ted Giefer made a fishing trip to Hand Lake in Cass County.

Elmer Knutson and family of New Sweden moved to Nicollet, into the Mrs. Christ Ginkel residence, and Mrs. Augusta Schuveiller and Mrs. Anna Dysart have moved into the Meurer residence with Mr. and Mrs. Henry Ginkel.

From Dr. Charles Cotton, secretary of the state livestock sanitary board, comes the announcement that a ban has been placed on all shipments of livestock into Minnesota from the Dakotas and Nebraska. The ban has become effective due to the plague of anthrax and sleeping sickness which has caused untold loss of livestock to farmers of the state, including heavy losses in this community.

According to N.W. Elsberg, the state highway commissioner has issued a call for bids on new highway jobs in eight counties estimated to cost $525,000. The call includes grading, paving and shouldering of highway 14 between Courtland and New Ulm. Bids close September 24, and the description of the Nicollet county job is T.H. 14, length 7 miles, comprising 128,250 cubic yards shouldering, 85,475 square yards of concrete pavement, 378 cubic yards monolithic culverts.

Congratulations to Lloyd and Ruth Olson on the occasion of their 50th wedding anniversary and to Harold and Louise Rodning on the occasion of their 46th wedding anniversary.

Rick and Andrea Bruns of St. Peter celebrated their 15th wedding anniversary at their home August 31. Guests were uncles, aunts, cousins, and friends. They came from St. Peter, New Ulm, Mankato, and Courtland.

10 Years Ago – Sept. 13, 2012 Sheila Wingate presented the Courtland City Council with a book detailing the early history of Courtland. The book starts with the early settlers in the 1850s and includes history to around the turn of the century.

Clarissa Waibel, daughter of Tim and Mary Waibel, was crowned Miss New Ulm at the Firefighters Dance. She was sponsored by Swany’s Pub. The dance was held at the New Ulm Event Center, formerly the Hope and Healing Center.

Many relatives and friends attended the surprise open house 80th birthday party for Eddie Reinhart. The party was held at the Courtland Community Center and was hosted by his family.

The Minnesota Department of Agriculture (MDA) has partnered with Working Dogs for Conservation to train dogs in sniffing out EAB infested wood and ash tree material. The goal is to deploy the dogs to help regulatory crews find infested wood and other materials that may be harboring the destructive tree pest.

The Nicollet Fire Department held its annual Fireman’s Dance September 8. Attendees could enjoy a meal, a drink, and dance the night away.

Answer: Minnesota law does not allow for this. It is illegal to equip or operate a motor vehicle with any equipment or material that covers a headlamp, tail lamp, or reflector.

I’d also like to remind drivers about when headlights and taillights

display lighted headlamps, lighted tail lamps, and illuminating devices from sunset to sunrise. The law also applies when it’s raining, snowing, sleeting, or hailing and at any time when visibility is impaired by weather or insufficient light at a distance of 500 feet ahead.

Many vehicles are equipped with basic automatic headlights. The headlights turn on when sensors on the dashboard detect a certain level of

automatic headlights. Drivers might assume the sensors will activate all of the vehicle’s lights in reduced visibilities, but that is not always the case. Instead, drivers should use the conventional headlight switch to manually turn on their lights.

A good rule to follow — if your wipers need to be on, your headlights, taillights and marker lights should be on as well. Also, make it a habit to check your lights often to ensure all

Question: My question stems from all the vehicles that have loud music playing. I can hear them coming from blocks away. When they drive by my house the windows actually rattle. Is there a state law or ordinance against these boom boxes on wheels?

Answer: Minnesota does not have a state law prohibiting loud music inside a vehicle, but many cities do have ordinances prohibiting

noise levels. A common ordinance states music cannot be heard from a vehicle at a distance of 25 ft or more from the path of the vehicle when operated on a public street or sidewalk or in a public park or other public places.

It is important for the driver to be alert and aware of everything that is going on around them. Listening to very loud music while driving may block out an emergency vehicle’s

siren or another vehicle’s horn, possibly causing a crash or reducing the response time for an emergency vehicle. Emergency vehicles are equipped with lights and sirens in an effort to warn others when responding to an emergency. The ability to hear a siren and see emergency lights will enable the driver to safely pull over and yield for approaching emergency vehicles.

To the Editor The COVID-19 pandemic has made life more difficult for many of us, including youth who don’t have a safe place to stay.

An estimated 13,300 Minnesota youth on their own experience homelessness over the course of a year, according to Wilder Research.

That includes an estimated 5,800 minors ages 17 and younger on their own, and 7,500 young adults ages 18 to 24.

Most youth experiencing homelessness in our area are sleeping on the couches of friends. However, youth are struggling to even find a couch to sleep on as people are nervous about others coming into their homes during the pandemic.

has also made it more difficult for youth to find a place to live. When there are few options, youth often turn to their cars, tents or camping for shelter.

During National Runaway and Homeless Youth Awareness Month in November, we want to thank the community for working with us to support these youth. Germaine “Gerry” Elizabeth Peterson, age 94 of New Ulm died peacefully on Thursday, November 3, 2022, at her home at Ridgeway on 23rd in New Ulm. Funeral service will be 11 am on Wednesday, November 9, 2022, at the Bernadotte Lutheran Church in Bernadotte Township. Pastor Bob Stover will officiate, and burial will follow in the Bernadotte Lutheran Cemetery.

Visitation will be 9-11 am on Wednesday at the church in Bernadotte prior to the service.

Richard Mielke, age 74, of Courtland, passed away Friday, November 4, 2022, at the Sleepy Eye Care Center after a hard-fought battle with cancer.

Richard is survived by his wife of 49 years, Donna; daughter Christina (Jason) Marth of Courtland; son Jon (Erin) Mielke of Courtland; grandchildren Riley (Olivia) Marth of Mankato, Spencer

and other nieces, nephews, and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband Wallace in 2016; an infant grandson, Jon Peterson; her sister and brother-in-law, Maxine and Joe Busch; and her brother, Sylvan Dietz.

Germaine “Gerry” Elizabeth Dietz was born June 13, 1928, in New Ulm to William and Margaret (Wurtzberger) Dietz. She grew up in New Ulm where she attended Holy Trinity High School.

On January 27, 1947, Gerry was united in marriage to Wallace C. Peterson at the Bernadotte Lutheran Church Parsonage. This union blessed the couple with a daughter and three sons whom together they raised on their farm in Bernadotte Township. Gerry worked from home

raising their family, and worked as a diligent farmers wife helping on the farm wherever she was needed. Besides her work, there were a variety of hobbies she enjoyed in life as well.

Gerry was known for having a green thumb and loved spending her summers tending to her beautiful gardens and flowers. As a homemaker, Gerry was a wonderful provider and cook making countless meals and treats for her family over the years. Living life on the farm was great with the neighbors they had. Gerry was able to host and organize dinner parties and card parties for her friends and neighbors where many laughs were shared. Gerry enjoyed hosting family holiday events as well, but getting the family together for Christmas

Richard Samuel Mielke was born November 27, 1947, to Ernest and Cornelia (Bode) Mielke in New Ulm. He graduated from Nicollet High School in 1965.

Richard worked at the Courtland Creamery in early years, then later at Hewitt Ma nu fa c t u r i ng, while also farming.

He was united in marriage to Donna Herlick March 10, 1973, and together they raised their two children in the home where he grew up. He continued to farm after retirement until he was unable due to poor health.

Richard enjoyed life and had many hobbies over the years. He

was always her favorite. Dancing, especially the polka, was a favorite for Gerry and Wallace where they would frequent the local ballrooms and show their talents on the dance floor. To relax, Gerry enjoyed watching the birds, and always loved when a cardinal would stop for a visit. In retirement, her and Wallace also did a lot of travelling seeing the sights of such places as Germany, Hawaii, and Cancun the name a few. Gerry was a devout and dedicated member of Bernadotte Lutheran Church where she was an active volunteer when she could. What Gerry enjoyed the most in life was time she got to spend with her family. She cherished every moment she got to spend with them, and especially loved getting to see her grandkids and great-grandkids grow. She will be dearly missed by all who knew and loved her. Blessed be her memory.

A women reported assault to police October 6 for a past alleged assault at the Leo Hoffman Center on October 1 with a client.

A woman reported an alleged assault in the past involving her son on the 100 block of North 4th St. A death and call for a report of a body found on the 700 block of Sioux found face down on October 7.

Police responded to a call for reported theft from a motor vehicle on the 1800 block of Gault St. Police arrested David Hser for catalytic converter theft and warrants in other counties on October 9.

Police responded to a report of theft on October 10 by a woman who told police that a tenant behind the Subway restaurant on the 1300 block of Minnesota Ave. plugged an extension cord into an outlet to steal electricity.

Police responded to a report of

criminal damage to property on the 800 block of Minnesota Ave. by a woman on October 23. The woman reported she believed neighbors spray painted a yard light and covered other lights during a party. Another related call came in later and the party reported a rear vehicle window broken and belongings inside gone through overnight.

Another later call to police by the party was for the report of a stolen ID from the vehicle.

A man reported criminal damage to property to police on October 23. The man said some younger males were spray painting on walls under a nearby tunnel.

Police later located the suspect and arrested a juvenile for small possession of marijuana.

Police responded to a call by another local law enforcement agency for a search of a vehicle at Family Fresh grocery store in Saint Peter on October 25 on the 600 block of Minnesota Ave. Police allegedly found a suspected cannabis wax vape device, which was confiscated and sent to Nicollet County courts for a complaint but no arrest was made, according to Saint Peter police.

USDA Designates Nine Minnesota Counties as Primary Natural Disaster Areas

In the sixth chapter of Luke’s gospel Jesus flat out states the reality that he sees. There are people who are poor, hungry, and weeping in our world. There are people who hate, defile, and exclude. But even though Jesus acknowledges the present reality, he sees a different future.

He says, “Blessed are you who weep now, for you will laugh.” For those of us on the road of grief we will laugh. We will not weep any longer, and weeping will not consume us, because Jesus makes the promise that we will laugh. Jesus is testifying to a truth that we don’t see yet, but we know is coming, when our weeping will end and the dead will be raised. On that day we will rejoice and leap for joy.

We will laugh because we are Easter people. We are Easter people who live in the reality of Holy Saturday. We live in the present, which is filled with darkness, death, and despair. We live in the present where tragedy strikes everyday leaving us no choice but to weep. But we are Easter people who believe in resurrection. We trust in Jesus, knowing well that the sting of death will be replaced by the joy of Easter Sunday, where grief and death will reign no more.

So perhaps Jesus is inviting us to live into that promised future in the here and now. Perhaps Jesus is inviting us to live as though that day is today. Jesus is calling us not to pretend as though the sting of death is not there, but instead Jesus is calling us to look past death to the hope of eternal life. The hope of eternal life

that was won by him as he breathed his last breath on the cross, only to be raised from the grave three days later. Through the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ, death shall no longer have the final word.

A week or so ago at our church, like many other churches all over the world, we celebrated All Saints Sunday. Some light candles in memory of those who have died and some bring pictures. Other churches ring the bell for each person who died in the past year.

Regardless of what specifically we do, our words and actions testify to the truth that the divine love of Christ has defeated death now and forever. We testify to the truth that even though death has made its mark, it is the cross of Christ that will have the final word.

That is what we do as Christians.

We are here to testify to the truth, that through the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ, even though we die, we will live. We testify to the truth that that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor rulers, nor things present, nor things to come, nor powers, nor height, nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord. Here and now, through tears we laugh.

It may not be Easter Sunday but today we remember that Jesus is risen, and so too are the ones we love who have gone before us.

So thanks be to God, the risen Christ, who wipes away our tears and gives us a hope for tomorrow.

Thanks be to God who brings life to the dead turning our tears into laughter. Amen.

Focus on AG: Basis Level Important for Grain Marketing Decisions

The corn basis level on November 3 in Southern Minnesota ranged from about ($.25) per bushel under the CBOT December futures price to +$.15 above the CBOT price.

Soybean basis levels in Southern Minnesota on November 3 generally ranged from ($.15) under to +$.05 over the CBOT January futures price, with some soybean processing plants as high as +$.40 above the futures price. In the six years (2015-2020) prior to 2021, early November corn basis levels in Southern Minnesota had typically averaged ($.35) to ($.45) per bushel below the nearby CBOT futures

price and soybean basis levels were ($.40) to ($.90) per bushel under futures prices.

Currently, many farmers are quite “bullish” about grain market prices in 2023, meaning that they feel there is a good chance of corn and soybean prices rising in the coming months. The current basis levels for both crops in many areas are encouraging producers to sell their grain in the next few months, rather than waiting until next Summer to market the grain. Corn futures and cash prices are currently projected to stay fairly steady from now until July of 2023, meaning there is very

little difference in the expected basis levels by next Summer. At soybean processing plants in Southern Minnesota, the soybean basis was +$.40 per bushel on November 3, compared to minus ($.15) per bushel in July of 2023, so even though the CBOT futures price for July is $.16 per bushel higher than the January price, the cash soybean bid for July is ($.39) per bushel lower than the current cash bid.

There are several grain marketing tools available for farmers to utilize besides cash sales, including a variety of hedging, options and basis contracts, Typical hedging or

options contracts lock in the CBOT futures price but not the cash price, meaning that there is still basis risk.

For example, a “hedge-to-arrive” contract locks in a CBOT futures price but the basis is not finalized until the futures contract is cleared and the grain is sold. By comparison, a basis contract locks in the basis but keeps the final price open depending on changes in the corresponding CBOT futures price and actual cash price at the time of delivery. Depending on an individual’s willingness to assume some market risk, they could also sell the grain for cash to realize the advantage of

the current basis levels and take a CBOT options or futures price position to keep some upside potential in the corn and soybean markets.

Most grain marketing strategies, including storing unpriced grain in a bin on the farm, involve some level of price and/or basis risk. Understanding the dynamics of basis in corn and soybean market

prices is a key element in analyzing the various types of grain marketing contracts that are available to farm operators. Iowa State University has some good information available on understanding basis and various grain marketing strategies. Knight-Raiders Compete in State Cross Country Meet

In spite of being big underdogs, the Knight-Raiders went out strong as a team in the Boys’ State Class A Cross Country Meet Saturday, November 5, at St. Olaf College in Northfield.

“Everyone in that meet was good, including our team,” coach Doug Burns said. “At the mile mark, we were in 12th among the 16 teams with 259 points—the exact same score as Loyola-Cleveland—ahead of Moose Lake, Bertha-Hewitt, Lewiston-Altura and Winona Cotter.”

Burns continued, “We dropped to 15th by the two-mile mark, ahead of only Lewiston-Altura.”

The Knight-Raiders finished 16th with 348 points. That was 15 points behind Loyola-Cleveland at 333 and 27 points behind Lewiston-Altura at 321.

Luke Engel is Nicollet’s only ­runner on the combined LCWM/ Nicollet cross country team. ­Engel finished 148th in the state Class A meet.

Confirmation and First Communion Service at Fields of Grace

A confirmation and first c­ommunion service was held for seven Fields of Grace Parish young people Sunday, October 30.

Jenna Donnay, daughter of Jeff and Sandy Donnay, was confirmed “Last year the 16th place school in her faith by Pastor Bob Stover at was 155 points behind 15th,” the First Lutheran Church in Lafayette. coach said. “Our kids ran a courageous race, and being so close to 14th and 15th, they showed they belonged.”

The team was led by its lone senior, Christian Fells, who placed 62nd of 160 runners. Freshman Charlie Gengler was the next K-R finisher at 109th. He was followed

by Jacob Cooper at 122nd, Mason Anderson 127th, Luke Engel 148th, Aidan Moeller 155t , and Andrew Johnson 158th.

Heritage Christian Academy won the meet with 99 points, followed closely by Luverne at 102.

The other teams, in order of finish, were Perham, Park Rapids Area, Greenway/N/K, Staples-Motley, Bertha-Hewitt, Redwood Valley, St. Cloud Cathedral, St. John’s Prep, Winona Cotter, Minnehaha Academy, Moose Lake/WR/B, LA/RP/H, Loyola/Cleveland, and LCWM/Nicollet.

Six elementary students celebrated their first communion at the same service. The youngsters are pictured with Pastor Stover.

They are Taylyn Reinhart, Breck Reinhart, Hudson Kanuch, Douglas Henderson, Owen Hartmann, and Haley Kanuch.

Taylyn and Breck are the children of Kevin and Stacy Reinhart.

Hudson and Haley are the children of Dan and Sara Kanuch, Owen is the son of Sid and Angie Hartmann, and Douglas is the son of James and Jessica Henderson.

Nicollet County Veterans Day Dinner Program The Nicollet County Office of Veterans Services welcomes Nicollet County veterans to attend the annual Veterans Day dinner program. The program will be held on Friday, November 11th at the Nicollet American Legion.

Doors will be open for a social hour beginning at 5:00 p.m., with a free meal served at 6:00.

This year’s guest speaker will be Sergeant Major Brandon Macemon. SGM Macemon recently returned home to our community along with his family after nearly 23 years of Army service. SGM Macemon’s remarkable military career includes 19 years of service as a Green Beret within the United States Special

Operations Command and multiple combat deployments while ­advancing to the Army’s highest enlisted rank.

Hard Season for Raider Volleyball Team

“We didn’t have a lot of varsity experience returning as this year’s seniors were in the shadows of last year’s seniors and didn’t get much chance to play varsity last year,” coach Sue Boddy said.

The team had 11 seniors, but limited experience and it took some time for team members to figure out their roles.

“Our team had its ups and downs through the season,” the coach said.

“Everyone got some playing time during the season.”

As the season went on, seniors Shannon Soost and Brooklyn Bode emerged as this year’s hitting leaders. Both are middle hitters and both were named All Valley Conference Honorable Mention. They will be missed next season.

Senior Ambria Hoffman was the team’s libero.

“Ambria did a fantastic job as our libero and will also be missed,”

Boddy said. “She was always talking in the back row and read the ball very well.”

With those three—and eight more seniors graduating—the team has a lot of shoes to fill for next season.

But, looking ahead, Boddy noted, “We will have some girls returning with varsity experience. Leah Bode, Savannah Klockziem, Mia Lambrecht, and Katelyn Soost—and the girls on this year’s B-squad— will be ready to go. The B-squad girls got a lot of games in, due to the number of girls on the B-squad this year.”

When the teams held their endof-the-season potluck Thursday, November 3, eight seniors received Minnesota State High School Volleyball Coaches Association Academic All State Awards, presented only to seniors who have maintained a 3.8 or high GPA. It may not have been the season that the girls wanted, but they played with heart, never giving up, as shown by the fight they put up in their final game with Mayer Lutheran in the sub-section playoffs.

B-squad season report

The Nicollet B-squad finished its season 9-11.

“Our record may not look great, but I thought we had a great season,” coach Lauryn Franta said. “I had a great group of girls who worked hard every day and made the season a whole lot of fun.”

Four juniors—Emmie Hardel, Mackenzie Regner, Julia Rosin, and Allison Laven—were leaders for the other girls. Rosin was a middle hitter, played back row, and always led by example. Laven played wherever she was needed.

Regner always had a smile on her face and also played wherever she was needed. Hardel played libero and was always diving on the ground for a ball.

“The girls all played well together as a team and I know they will do great things in the upcoming season,” Franta said.

Sophomore Katelyn Soost was the team’s setter, played hard every game, and always gave 100 percent.

For her efforts, she was pulled up to varsity for the playoffs and played very well in the team’s win over Lester Prairie.

Three additional sophomores contributed to the team. Cason Forbrook had a nice power swing and improved a lot on that during the season. Ali Bruns always had a positive attitude and played anywhere. Brooke Stoll grew a lot as a player and showed improvement.

Kamryn Truebenbach was the only freshman to play on B-squad.

She was always aggressive and going after the ball.

Franta summed up, “It’s sad to see another season come and go, but I hope the girls learned a lot—not only about the game of volleyball, but also life and working together— and, most importantly, had fun.”

C-squad season report

C-squad coach Melissa Larson reported, “The C-squad improved by leaps and bounds throughout the season. We worked on fundamentals and honing in on our skills and Shannon Soost, left, and Brooklyn Bode received All Valley Honor- strengths, along with having fun at able Mention awards at the volleyball potluck. practices.”

She went on, “I enjoyed watching the girls improve and grow through the season.”

The team finished with a record of 6-9.

“We were definitely on a roller coaster this season,” Larson said.

The C-squad team included sophomores Kendra Flitter, Marissa Rosin, Ali Bruns, Brooke Stoll, and Cason Forbrook; and freshmen Makaela Thompson, Kamryn Truebenbach, Marilyn Pena, Rylee Jennissen, Emma Herrley, and Sophia Johnson.

The team served aggressively through the season, racking up a total of 158 aces. Truebenbach, Forbrook, Stoll, and Jennissen were the major contributors to those aces.

The girls worked hard on setting the ball and making completions, collecting 138 kills as a team. Brims, Forbrook, Stoll, Truebenbach, and Johnson led the way.

The Raiders did a good job getting passes up off serve receive and digs. Truebenbach, Flitter, Thompson, and Stoll put up the majority of the target passes.

The team totaled 226 digs with Truebenbach, Forbrook, Herrley, Johnson, Jennissen, and Stoll digging up the most balls.

offense and each took on the setter role. They all contributed to the team with their tenacious serving skills.

Jacelyn Wilking, Adalynn Rodman, and Ryleigh Weston played middle and outside hitters.

Each improved their hitting and their passing gave the team a boost in serve receive.

Sisters Emma and Abbie Kuehn joined the team this fall and became

consistent servers. Abbie had great plays in the right front spot and Emma’s strengths shined as an outside hitter.

Livia Salisbury and Piper Eggen hustled in the back row positions and helped dig up hits and put in several serves.

Rodman summed up, “While our record may not have proved this teams’ skills, it was a fun and rewarding volleyball season.”

Eight Raiders received Minnesota State High School Volleyball Coaches Association Academic All State Awards for maintaining a 3.8 or high GPA. The awards go only to seniors.
