C ourtland C opy Mary Bruns My sympathy goes to the family of Thomas “Tom” Renner, 61, of New Ulm and formerly of Courtland. Tom passed away August 17. His funeral will be September 24 at 2:00 p.m. at the Courtland Evangelical Lutheran Church. A gathering of friends and family will follow at the Courtland Community Center. Tom was a very happy person and loved to visit with everyone.

He had a good memory and always remembered you and would call you by name.He is survived by his father Ron and siblings and their families.

He was preceded in death by his mother Marlys. Heaven has gained a special angel.

The century old downtown building at 307 North Minnesota Street in New Ulm was torn down Thursday.

It was next door to the Journal office, which had to be closed that day for safety measures.The building had been crumbling for some time and it was decided to destroy the building, rather than repair it.There were many different businesses in the building over the years.

The annual Lions Fly-In Breakfast was held in New Ulm Sunday, September 11. Many pilots came to the airport and enjoyed all the activities of the day. There were

many things to see and helicopter rides for those who wanted to go for a ride. Many people were there to enjoy all the events of the day.

Hermann Fest was held Saturday, September 10. The day started with the Drew’s Color 5K run fundraiser put on by friends of Drew Aufderheide. Drew has chronic Myelogenous leukemia. There was music at Hermann Heights and also in Harman Park, followed by Thunder in the Valley with the New Ulm Battery firing its cannon during the playing of 1812 Overture.

Fireworks took place at 8:30 p.m.

Focus on AG Sept. 12 USDA Report Decreases Expected 2022 U.S. Crop Yields

The Sept. 12 USDA Crop Report decreased the projected U.S. average corn and soybean yields for 2022, as compared to the August National Ag Statistics Service (NASS) yield estimates. The latest NASS yield estimates were based on U.S. crop conditions as of Sept. 1 and were the first 2022 yield USDA estimates that included actual field data, including in some of states with major impacts from this year’s drought. Total U.S. corn and soybean harvested acreage totals were also decreased in the latest USDA report, compared to the August acreage estimates.

The result was a 3% decrease in the projected total 2022 production of both corn and soybeans in the United States. The immediate market response was a sharp increase in prices for both December corn futures and November soybean futures on the Chicago Mercantile Exchange (CME).

The Sept. 12 USDA Report projects the 2022 U.S. average corn yield at 172.5 bushels per acre, which is a decline from 175.4 bushels per acre in the August NASS report.

The projected 2022 national corn yield compares to the record U.S. corn yield of 177 bushels per acre in 2021, as well as to 171.4 bushels per acre in 2020, 167.4 bushels per acre in 2019 and 176.4 bushels per acre in 2018. The USDA reduced the total 2022 harvested corn acreage in the U.S. by 900,000 acres from earlier estimates, based on crop acreage certification data filed by producers through the USDA Farm Service Agency (FSA) offices. The USDA is now estimating total U.S.

corn production for 2022 at 13.94 billion bushels, which would be a decrease of 8% from the 2021 production of 15.1 billion bushels, as well as being lower than the 2020 corn production level of 14.1 billion bushels.

The USDA is estimating Minnesota’s 2022 average corn yield at 190 bushels per acre, which was a decrease of three bushels per acre from the August estimate. The projected 2022 corn yield would be above the 2021 average yield of 178 bushels per acre; however, it would trail the 2020 statewide average yield of 192 bushels per acre and the record Minnesota yield of 194 bushels per acre in 2017. The Sept. 12 report also decreased Iowa’s 2022 average corn yield by five bushels per acre compared to the August estimate, lowering the projected yield to 200 bushels per acre. Iowa’s projected 2022 statewide corn yield would be below the record corn yield of 205 bushels per acre in 2021 but would be slightly above the 2019 statewide corn yield of 198 bushels per acre. The 2022 Iowa corn yield would be considerably higher than the 2020 yield of 178 bushels per acre that was reduced by the severe derecho storm.

The 2022 USDA corn yield estimates for the other major corn producing states are Illinois at 204 bushels per acre, compared to 202 bushels per acre in 2021; Indiana at 186 bushels per acre, compared to 195 bushels per acre in 2021; North Dakota at 141 bushels per acre, compared to 105 bushels per acre in 2021; and Wisconsin at 183 bushels per acre, compared to 180 bushels per acre in 2021.

LAFAYETTE LEDGER 100 Years Ago – Sept. 9, 1922 A general survey of the grounds at Fort Ridgely during the summer, under the direction of State Auditor R. P. Chase, who has charge of the state parks, may result in restoration of the fort and barracks as they were at the time of the Indian uprising 60 years ago.

A chicken culling demonstration will be given by County Agent Earl Springer at the Julius Hagberg place Saturday, September 16.

Everyone is invited to attend.

Enrollment at the local public school this week reached a total of 79 pupils. It is expected that, at the close of another week, the attendance will increase to 85 or 90.

School work has gone on uninterrupted since registration. The teachers arrived Monday to assume charge of their work. With proper facilities for schoolwork at hand, every indication points to a successful school year.

Dr. G. Rudell of Minneapolis visited at the Emil Larson home.

Dr. Rudell returned recently from a trip abroad where he pursued post graduate work in his profession in Germany.

A.H. Quandt is nursing a rather unusual injury. On his recent visit to Canada, he figured in a minor automobile accident and, as a result, sustained a cut on his left cheek from a broken windshield.

He paid little attention to it, figuring it was of minor consequence, but of late the injury began to cause trouble, the flow of saliva following the outside instead of inside the mouth. A saliva glad was found to be severed.

75 Years Ago – Sept. 12, 1947 The Rev. Alex Schwinn, who has served as pastor of the St. Michael parish at Gaylord for nearly three years, has been assigned as pastor of the St. George Catholic church. He succeeds Father Ortner, who has been at St. George the past several months.

John A. Johnson, sheriff of Nicollet County, must take a taxi or walk, as his automobile is laid up for repairs. Martin Hahn, deputy sheriff, piloted it into a ditch along the Fort Road several days ago.

About $500 damages resulted to the Buick when the car hit a slippery spot and then struck the soft, wet clay bank, causing it to leave the road. Hahn was on a call to Courtland when the accident occurred.

Donald Johnson entertained 18 friends at a birthday party at the home of his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Warren Johnson, celebrating his sixth birthday.

The infant daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Sylvester Schaeffler was baptized Carolyn Jean by Father Leo Krzmarzick at the Church of St. Gregory Sunday. The sponsors were Clarence Schaeffler and Mrs. Eli Teig.

Mrs. Ken Hill and daughter Pamela Jane returned to their home at Los Angeles, California, after spending the summer in Bernadotte at the home of her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Walter Karstad. The trip was made by plane.

Miss Ardis Johnson of here and Miss Bernice Lundgren of Gibbon departed for St. Peter to resume their studies as juniors at Gustavus Adolphus college.

50 Years Ago – Sept. 14, 1972 Bernadotte came out the winner in the playoffs of the Lafayette Softball Association League.

Mr. and Mrs. Gert Ulrich and family have moved into the Earl Johnson home. The Johnsons have moved to Excelsior.

Arno Bergstrom, Jr., is attending fall quarter of the University of Minnesota Cloquet Forestry Center. He is a senior in the School of Forestry.

Bob Anderson of Chisago City spent a few days at the Merton Johnson home. They all visited at the R.C. Johnson home. Also there were Mr. and Mrs. Calvin Johnson and Benay. Bob also attended Farmfest at Vernon Center.

Harry Mogenson of Chicago is spending a few days at the Ed. Mogenson home in Bernadotte. He attended Farmfest at Vernon Center with Kenneth Martens.

A baby girl was born September 7 to Mr. and Mrs. Tim Sjogren of Lafayette.

Mr. and Mrs. Robert Halverson returned from a six-day trip along the Mississippi River to St. Louis, Missouri. They also visited at Hannibal, the home of Mark Twain, and at the Amana Colony in Iowa.

NICOLLET LEADER 115 Years Ago – Sept. 14, 1907 Mr. and Mrs. August Thom welcomed a young man of 8 lbs. to their home Monday.

Ed. Hopp has purchased the Charles Otto farm and will move on same after October 1.

A.H. Johnson’s boy dislocated his right wrist joint and the doctor had to fix it up.

Fred C. Krohn had a horse fall on him and broke both bones of the left leg near the ankle. Dr. Ray made him feel comfortable.

Chris. Krohn made a mistake and took a head dive from a separator at Rudolph Compart’s and broke both bones of the left wrist and strained his back and the right arm quite badly. Dr. Ray set the bones.

Mr. and Mrs. Herman W. Dallmann say it is a 9 lb. boy Monday morning last.

John Quick bought the John Haack farm in Oshawa township; consideration $6,600.

Barber M.J. Frey has moved his shop and dwelling into the building he recently purchased from the Manitoba land company.

Mr. and Mrs. C.E. Borchardt of Lamberton have arrived here to take possession of the Albert Blank farm near town and be numbered among Nicollet residents.

A.L. Dallmann of Wabasso stopped here a few days to visit relatives. Mr. Dallmann was on his way home from Colorado where he looked up the land situation, but says that he is not greatly impressed with that country and thinks good old Minnesota is good enough for him.

About 30 sportsmen from Mankato, St. Peter, Rochester, and Nicollet attended a hearing in this village last Saturday. At the meeting, it was voted to extend the Swan Lake game refuge south of the Johnson and Anderson Islands 200 feet further out into the lake.

Game Commissioner Carlos Avery of St. Paul was unable to preside at the hearing and had named Game Warden Martin Hahn of St. Peter to fill his place. The new lines of the refuge were posted last Sunday.

85 Years Ago – Sept. 10, 1937 Born, to Mr. and Mrs. Edwin Kastens, an eight pound baby boy at Union hospital in New Ulm on Tuesday.

Mr. and Mrs. Louis Krohn and sons Edgar and Elmo attended the big state fair.

Frank Schuck, Anthony Epper, Reinhard Volk, and Ted Giefer made a fishing trip to Hand Lake in Cass County.

Elmer Knutson and family of New Sweden moved to Nicollet, into the Mrs. Christ Ginkel residence, and Mrs. Augusta Schuveiller and Mrs. Anna Dysart have moved into the Meurer residence with Mr. and Mrs. Henry Ginkel.

From Dr. Charles Cotton, secretary of the state livestock sanitary board, comes the announcement that a ban has been placed on all shipments of livestock into Minnesota from the Dakotas and Nebraska. The ban has become effective due to the plague of anthrax and sleeping sickness which has caused untold loss of livestock to farmers of the state, including heavy losses in this community.

According to N.W. Elsberg, the state highway commissioner has issued a call for bids on new highway jobs in eight counties estimated to cost $525,000. The call includes grading, paving and shouldering of highway 14 between Courtland and New Ulm. Bids close September 24, and the description of the Nicollet county job is T.H. 14, length 7 miles, comprising 128,250 cubic yards shouldering, 85,475 square yards of concrete pavement, 378 cubic yards monolithic culverts.

10 Years Ago – Sept. 13, 2012 Sheila Wingate presented the Courtland City Council with a book detailing the early history of Courtland. The book starts with the early settlers in the 1850s and includes history to around the turn of the century.

Clarissa Waibel, daughter of Tim and Mary Waibel, was crowned Miss New Ulm at the Firefighters Dance. She was sponsored by Swany’s Pub. The dance was held at the New Ulm Event Center, formerly the Hope and Healing Center.

Many relatives and friends attended the surprise open house 80th birthday party for Eddie Reinhart. The party was held at the Courtland Community Center and was hosted by his family.

The Minnesota Department of Agriculture (MDA) has partnered with Working Dogs for Conservation to train dogs in sniffing out EAB infested wood and ash tree material. The goal is to deploy the dogs to help regulatory crews find infested wood and other materials that may be harboring the destructive tree pest.

The Nicollet Fire Department held its annual Fireman’s Dance September 8. Attendees could enjoy a meal, a drink, and dance the night away.

driver and his driving sometimes led to humorous experiences, like the time he followed a dump truck off route in the Twin Cities. He was quick to laugh at himself and had a

quick explanation. Scott’s dad, Ron, also drove bus for Scott.

A 1980 graduate of Nicollet High School, Scott and Julie’s kids—Abby, Brandon, Jordan, and

Taylor—also graduated from NHS and were active in sports and school activities. The family farmed and also operated a sweet corn stand for many years.

Minnesota Valley Lutheran High School is Blessed

“We are excited about the future.

Minnesota Valley Lutheran High School (MVL) is so blessed to have such a wide support system with churches in the area and others in the community. We are thankful for all the blessings we have seen,” Dr. Tim Plath, principal of MVL High School, said.

Plath just started his 18th year at MVL. He is excited about the growth he sees for the future.

MVL— 43 seniors, 64 juniors, 50 sophomores, and 63 freshmen.

“I’m confident that we will see our numbers increase next year because we are expecting about 60-70 freshmen and—with only 43 seniors this year—our enrollment will increase,” he said.

Students come from the local communities as well as other cities that include Belle Plaine, Jordan, Mankato, St. James, Sanborn, Redwood Falls, Gibbon, Fairfax, and Winthrop.

“Our buses cover a 50-mile radius to transport the students. We have students from more than ten school districts. We dedicate funds in our budget so that we can provide bus service for our students,” Plath said.

MVL did host international students in the past; however, since Covid things have changed, and contacts to do the exchange have not been available.

Even the construction of Highway 14 and the communication with MnDOT and Hoffman Construction has gone well.

“They are easy to work with and we are still able to drive from Courtland to MVL on the old Highway 14.

We don’t expect that access to close until June 2023, so it may impact our

Students are also able to play soccer on Cathedral High School and New Ulm High School teams; tennis with New Ulm High School students; and Cathedral students join MVL students for track.

There are also academic teams at MVL, along with music and drama.

“Due to the construction of Highway 14, we are hoping to move the current softball field to the north which will provide a better experience for the students. “Our students are very involved in activities. About 90 percent of our students are involved in some type of activity,” Plath said.

Plath added, “We continue to look at areas that we can partner with others to provide options for our students.”

Of course, with the increase of enrollment also comes the need for expansion. MVL has grown a lot since it started in 1979 at St. Paul’s School in New Ulm. In 1981, MVL moved into the current location, just east of New Ulm. An addition was completed in 1995 and another in 2007.

This year, a new capital campaign, “Building on the Rock,” started.

Plath said, “This campaign’s name ties very well with our current location because it has a foundation of red rock and God is our rock as we use God’s Word in a Christcentered education to assist families in training students for Christian lives on earth and for eternity.”

Funding from “Building on the Rock” will be used to add two science classrooms on the northwest corner of the school and two classrooms below those. The current gym will be changed to a fine arts cen-

DNR Encourages Deer Hunters to Make a Plan for Archery Season change year-to-year, it’s critical for hunters to think ahead and make a plan for a safe, successful and enjoyable season.”

Hunters may notice their deer permit area bag limit has changed.

The DNR increased the bag limits or lottery permits in 28 deer permit areas this year and reduced limits in 12 DPAs. Bag limit changes are made based on deer populations in each DPA relative to the population goal for that permit area. Population goals are reviewed every 10 years through a process that includes public input.

For archery season, self-service stations will only be available in DPAs 213, 256, 257, 262, 265 and 273. Archery hunters in DPAs located within CWD zones will have other options for submitting voluntary samples, including by appointment with DNR in some locations, through participating taxidermists and processors, and via mail-in kits.

“Many hunters are accustomed to using self-service stations during archery season and this year we’re asking them to instead consider using one of the other vol-

untary sampling methods available,” said Erik Hildebrand, DNR wildlife health program supervisor.

“Submitting samples for CWD testing is voluntary for all archery hunters unless they’re hunting during the firearms opening weekend when it is mandatory for all deer harvested Nov. 5 or 6.”

To provide more locations statewide for hunters to submit samples for CWD testing, the DNR has expanded the network of taxidermists and processors participating in the partner sampling program (mndnr.gov/CWD/CWD-Partners. html). Additionally, the DNR is piloting hunter mail-in sampling kits (mndnr.gov/CWD/CWD-Kits.

Focus on AG: Sept. 12 USDA Report Decreases Expected 2022 U.S. Crop Yields

In states being significantly impacted by drought conditions this year, South Dakota’s projected 2022 corn yield is 138 bushels per acre, compared to 135 bushels per acre in 2021; and Nebraska at 176 bushels per acre, compared to 195 bushels per acre in 2021.

The USDA report on Sept. 12 estimated total 2022 U.S. soybean production at nearly 4.38 billion bushels, which would be down slightly from the 2021 soybean production of just over 4.43 billion bushels. The USDA lowered the projected 2022 U.S. average soybean yield to 50.5 bushels per acre, compared to 51.9 bushels per acre in the August report. The 2022 NASS soybean yield estimate compares to 51.4 bushels per acre in 2021, 50.2 bushels per acre in 2020, 47.4 bushels per acre in 2019 and 51.6 bushels per acre in 2018, as well as the record national average soybean yield of 52 bushels per acre in 2016. The USDA

2022 soybean yield projection is about one bushel per acre lower than the average yield estimates by many grain trading analysts.

The USDA is estimating Minnesota’s 2022 average soybean yield at 50 bushels per acre, which is the same as the August estimate.

The 2022 yield compares to recent statewide yields of 47 bushels per acre in 2021, 49 bushels per acre in 2020, 44 bushels per acre in 2019 and 50.5 bushels per acre in 2018, as well as the record state soybean yield of 52.5 bushels per acre in 2016. The estimated 2022 soybean yield for Iowa was increased by one bushel per acre from the August estimate and is now projected at 59 bushels per acre. The 2022 statewide yield compares to the statewide record soybean yield of 62 bushels per acre in 2021, 53 bushels per acre in 2020, 55 bushels per acre in 2019 and 57 bushels per acre in 2018.

Other projected 2022 yields in

major soybean producing states include Illinois at 64 bushels per acre, which is the same as 2021; Indiana at 60 bushels per acre, compared to 59 bushels per acre in 2021; Wisconsin at 53 bushels per acre, compared 55 bushels per acre in 2021; and South Dakota at 41 bushels per acre, compared to 40 bushels per acre in 2021.

North Dakota is projected to have a 2022 soybean yield of 34 bushels per acre, compared to only 25.5 bushels per acre in 2021. On the other hand, the statewide 2022 soybean yield estimate for the drought-stricken state of Nebraska is only 52 bushels per acre, compared to 63 bushels per acre in 2021.

Sept. 12 WASDE Report

The USDA World Agricultural Supply and Demand Estimates (WASDE) that was also released on Sept. 12 included the projected decreases in the 2022 U.S. corn

yield and the total corn production.

The report also showed a decrease in expected corn usage for ethanol and livestock feed during 2022-23 marketing year, as compared to the 2021-22 corn usage in both categories. U.S. corn export levels for 202223 are expected to decline from a year earlier and are now estimated at 2.275 billion bushels, which is down from the corn export totals of 2.475 billion bushels in 2021-22 and 2.745 billion bushels in 2020-21; however, the 2022-23 export levels are still well above the 2019 final corn exports of 1.777 billion bushels.

Total corn usage for 2022-23 is now estimated at 14.275 billion bushels and corn ending stocks are projected at just under 1.22 billion bushels, which is a decrease from a carryover of slightly of 1.39 billion bushels in the August WASDE report. The latest 2022-23 corn ending stocks projection compares to the ending stocks estimate of 1.52

billion bushels in the just completed 2021-22 marketing year, and 1.23 billion bushels in 2020-21. The USDA 2022-23 corn carryover level was very near the average estimates by grain trading analysts.

The USDA is projecting the average on-farm corn price for the 202223 marketing year, which extends from Sept. 1, 2022, through Aug. 31, 2023, to be $6.75 per bushel, which is an increase of $.10 per bushel from the August price estimate. The 2021-22 national average corn price, which will be finalized on Sept.

30, 2022, is estimated at $5.95 per bushel, which compares to previous national average prices of $4.53 per bushel in 2020-21, $3.56 per bushel in 2019-20, $3.61 per bushel for 2018-19 and 3.36 per bushel in 2017-18.

The recent WASDE report projected 2022-23 soybean ending stocks at 200 million bushels, which is a decrease of 45 million bushels

or 18% from the August estimate.

The 2022-23 soybean ending stocks compares to previous ending stocks of 240 million bushels in 2021-22, 257 million bushels in 2020-21, 525 million bushels in 2019-20 and 909 million bushels in 2018-19. Soybean exports for 2022-23 are projected at just under 2.1 billion bushels, which is down slightly from an estimated 2.14 billion bushels in 2021-22 and 2.27 billion bushels in 2020-21 but is still well-above the 2019-20 export level of 1.68 billion bushels.

The USDA is now projecting the average on-farm soybean price for the 2022-23 marketing year at $14.35 per bushel, which is unchanged from August price estimate. The 2021-22 estimated final national average soybean price is estimated at $13.30 per bushel, which compares to national average prices of $10.80 per bushel for 2020-21, $8.57 per bushel for 201920 and $8.48 per bushel in 2018-19.

Farmland Rental Rate Information Knight Raiders at TCU Invitational

WORTHINGTON — What is fair farmland rent, will be the focus of several fall meetings in person across the state. Landlords, farmers and agri-business professionals should make plans to attend one of the informative fair farm rental agreement meetings being held across Minnesota. These free meetings are being provided by the University of Minnesota Extension. Farmland rental rates are the largest input cost the farmer has. Determining a fair farm rent agreement is a challenge in today’s economy with current high corn and soybeans prices in 2022.

Negotiating a fair rental agreement that satisfies the landowner and the farmer is a challenge.

David Bau and Nathan Hulinsky, Extension educators in Ag Business Management, will provide several ways, including examples, factsheets and worksheets, to determine a fair farmland rental rate for both parties.

Topics covered at the meetings will include local historic and projected farmland rental rate trends, current farmland values and sales, and a worksheet that will help determine a fair rental agreement. Input costs for 2022 will be presented along with current 2022 corn and soybean prices. Worksheets will examine 2023 costs, affordable rent rates for farmers, the rate of return to the landlord at current market values, and examine flexible rental agreements.

The schedule for workshops can be found in October at extension. umn.edu. Attendees will receive several informative worksheets and factsheets that will help to determine what is a fair 2023 farmland rental rate.

After the in-person farmland rental rate workshops, there will be several online sessions. Starting in January 2023 there will be several sessions virtual across the state.

Here you can find a statewide map with rental rates recently updated with 2021 and 2022 county rents, a spreadsheet by county of cropland rental rates and worksheets for landlords and farmers to fill out to help determine what a fair rental rate is for 2023 for farmland or pasture.

Trends from FINBIN database show Minnesota rents increased from 2020 to 2021 by 4.6 percent.

The USDA Minnesota statewide averages from 2021 to 2022 farmland rents increased by 4.5% . The two estimates are both close to 4.5%.

This could be one way to plot a trend for 2023 rents.

St. Mary’s Defeats Raiders on the Gridiron

It was a soggy night for Parents Night at the Nicollet football game Friday. While it never rained hard, it “dripped” off and on through about half of the game.

Visiting Sleepy Eye St. Mary’s got the win, 34-16, but the game was closer than the score indicates.

The Knights scored first—after a Raider fumble on the second play from scrimmage. Their conversion

failed and the 6-0 score stood up until Nicollet went ahead with fourand-a-half minutes left in the second quarter. The 8-6 Raider lead didn’t last long. St. Mary’s pulled ahead 12-8 about two minutes later, then padded the lead on a pick six just a minute after that.

Lady Raiders Get First Win

By Ruth Klossner cowladyruth@gmail.com 507-240-0048 The Nicollet girls evened up their season record at 1-1 with a good 3-0 win over Mankato Loyola Thursday, September 8—but that evened-up record didn’t last long. The Raiders fell 0-3 to JWP Monday night.

Of Thursday’s win, Raider coach Sue Boddy said, “We played better but we still have a ways to go. We had some ups and downs during the match. We missed some serves which surprised me—that was part of our ‘downs.’”

Boddy continued, “We have a lot of the season left and we will only get better with each game.”

Unfortunately, the roller coaster the girls have been on took a drop in Monday’s loss.

“We didn’t play well. We were very quiet and not aggressive. We are still on the roller coaster of ups and downs. Monday games are

tough. We all know we can play better. I’m confident in our team putting this game behind us—and we’ll be ready for our games Tuesday and Thursday.”

Playing well Monday night were senior Shannon Soost and sophomore Savannah Klockziem.

B-squad

After picking up a 3-0 win last week Thursday, the tables were turned Monday night, when visiting JWP got the 3-0 win over Nicollet.

Just like the Raider varsity, the Nicollet B-squad took a 3-0 win over Mankato Loyola. Scores were 25-20, 25-11, 18-16.

It wasn’t quite as easy as it looked as the Raiders allowed the Crusaders to stay in the first and third games. Nicollet led 18-8 at one point in the first game—then suddenly the lead was down to 20-18 before the Raiders righted the ship.

The third game was tight all

the way, with numerous ties before Loyola took a 14-13 lead. After several more ties, Nicollet pulled out the 18-16 win.

Coach Lauryn Franta commented, “I thought we played a lot better as a team. We definitely need to work on serving because that’s what gave Loyola most of their points.

The girls are doing a much better job of cheering each other on and playing as a team.”

The Nicollet C-squad team faced Butterfield-Odin United Thursday, September 8, then squared off with JWP Monday—getting wins in both.

The Raiders took the first two games of Thursday’s match easily, then struggled in the third.

“We had to really focus and work on the little things,” coach Melissa Larson said. “We worked on pushing through and working hard.”

Rylee Jennissen was perfect at the serving line, hitting 18 of 18,

with eight aces. Brooke Stoll missed only one, going 18/19, with nine aces.

After dropping the first set Monday night, the Raiders rallied to take the next two.

“The girls played great,” Larson said. “They talked and worked hard to adjust to what the other team threw at us. We served aggressively and did well at serve receiving.”

The Nicollet eighth graders split their first two matches of the season, defeating Madelia 2-1 September 1 and losing to Mankato Loyola 0-3 September 8.

Scores against Madelia were 25-15, 25-14, 13-15. The Raiders served aggressively, which had a big impact on the score, according to coach Sara Gieseke.

Missed serves gave Loyola some easy points as the Crusaders defeated Nicollet 20-25, 25-27, 11-15 last week Thursday.

Taylor Wilking and Chloe Kachelmeier did a good job passing and serving. Martens led the team in setting and Megan Soost passed well and played aggressively at the net.

The Raider seventh grade team lost 0-3 to Madelia and 1-2 to Loyola.

Coach Kari Rodman noted, however, “The seventh graders are improving in skills and in teamwork.”

Top servers in the first two games were Cheyenne Klockziem and Jacelyn Wilking.
