Antique Plowing Event Held Saturday by Ruth Klossner cowladyruth@gmail.com 507-240-0048 Right on schedule, the local Antique Tractor Plowing event took place southeast of Lafayette Saturday. The event is usually held on Labor Day weekend—unless weather intervenes as it did last year. Saturday’s weather was perfect and the ground on Kevin Fluegge’s wheat stubble field turned over well for the one-, two-, three, and fourbottom rigs.. Nearly a dozen tractors were on hand with many driven by long-time participants and others
by first-timers. The drivers came from around the area—Lafayette, St. George, New Ulm, Swan Lake, Green Isle, and maybe some other places. No one is exactly sure how long the annual event has been going— probably three decades or more— but its popular with the owners of old tractors. A number who were unable to bring a tractor this year came to watch and to visit. Randy Altmann organized the event, sending out invitations to those who have taken part in the past, or who have shown interest. It’s a fun family event that everyone Tom Brown of St. George kept a close eye on his plow Saturday First-time plowers Aaron Starz, left, and his daughter Abby followed looks forward to. afternoon. Tim Plieseis down the field.
Lauren Hoffmann takes part in the plowing every year. He enjoys it The tractors followed each other up and down the field, as seen from so much that he sometimes comes back to plow another field for Delmar Ranweiler’s tractor. Fluegge.
Sunflower Field Open for Viewing in Gibbon by Ruth Klossner cowladyruth@gmail.com 507-240-0048 For the second straight year, sunflowers are blooming in Gibbon. Eight acres of beautiful yellow flowers are attracting visitors—as well as butterflies, bees, and dragon flies— to the southwest corner of Gibbon. Nestled between Augustana Lutheran Church and the Gibbon ball park, the Fish Sunflower Field is open for viewing from sunrise to sunset until approximately September 12. Visitors can walk over a mile of trails, take pictures with fun props, and enjoy the abundance of monarchs and bees. Props in the field—a tractor, a pickup, bicycle, large chairs, a piano, gnomes, and more—were donated by members of the community and many volunteer hours were given to the project. The Gibbon field is one of only three open for viewing in Minnesota this year. Johnny Olson of Big Lake, the man behind Fish Sunflower fields, noted recently on Facebook, “This year we planted a total of seven fields and, once again, we lost a few due to dry conditions. However, the last three fields that I planted are going to make it and we are excited to share them with you.” Gibbon is the first of the three to open, on August 31. The Andover field is likely in bloom and open now (early September), with the Albert Lea field expected to bloom in mid-September.

Three John Deeres and an Oliver plowed their way across the field— as the “supervisors” who didn’t bring tractors this year—had a great view from the top of the hill. Drivers, from left, were Lauren Hoffmann, Steve Reinhart, Reinhart’s grandson Nick, and Delmar Ranweiler.
Nicollet County 4-Hers Earn Honors at State Fair
by Ruth Klossner cowladyruth@gmail.com 507-240-0048
Nicollet County’s non-livestock 4-H participants were at the Minnesota State Fair as part of “Encampment Four” over Labor Day weekend. Just like the livestock exhibitors the week before, this group made a great showing. In order to handle all participants, the non-livestock kids were divided into four encampments, with each group of counties spending two days and two nights at the fair, having their projects evaluated during that time. Nicollet County
took part in the fourth and final encampment. Five non-livestock exhibitors from Nicollet County earned purple ribbons and nearly all of the others received blue ribbons. Purple ribbons were won by Karissia Wolters, clothing and textiles fidget pillow; Heidi Weber, fine arts acrylic painting of grandparents; Kaleb Schwartz, food preservation canned green beans; Grant Pribyl, flower gardening Lily breeding display; and Audrey Beranek, performing arts.
