ILS Hosts Farmers’ Markets
Something for Everyone in Lafayette By Ruth Klossner This past week was the busiest week of the summer in Lafayette. In just five days, the city had an ice cream social (well, really a spaghetti supper), a band con-
cert, city wide garage sales, an antique tractor pull, inflatables in the mini-park, a bucking bull, a bean bag tournament, a kids’ dance and contests, a street dance, an anniversary celebration at the local church, and neighborhood
night out. The social and band concert kicked things off Friday night, with many of the other events Saturday—before the church celebration took place Sunday. And, if that wasn’t enough, “Night
to Unite” took place this week Tuesday. (Watch for coverage of that event in next week’s Ledger.) Look for separate stories on the tractor pull and church anniversary in this issue.
Andrew Hartley first waved to those watching but, exactly five seconds later, was on the way to the deck—just like most everyone else who tried Logan Saffert showed “how low he could go” during Chopper’s party to ride the bucking bull in the Mini-Park. Saturday early evening.
County 4-Hers Show off their Skills
By Ruth Klossner In a kickoff event to next week’s Nicollet County Fair, 4-Hers from all parts of the county gathered at Nicollet last week Tuesday to demonstrate their skills in menu planning, cake decorating, sewing, fashion revue, and performing arts. Some of the kids arrived early that day to talk to evaluators about their clothing and quilting projects. Others came later in the day for the Lafayette Park and Recreation served the Friday The bean bags were flying on Main Street Saturday other events. night social—which was a spaghetti feed. afternoon. By 6:00 p.m., the Nicollet Public School Community Room was filled with excited 4-Hers showing off their food revue and cake/cupcake/ cookie decorating entries. Two judges moved around the room, talking to each exhibitor, suggesting possible changes, and awarding ribbon. With that completed, the action moved over to the school’s theatre, where the Performing Arts and Fashion Revue Program were held. Seventeen 4-Hers—from Cloverbud through high school students—presented their talent numbers. There was a lot of vari-
ety—from juggling, vocal solos, and instrumental numbers to comedy and poetry. While the judges pondered the placings for those numbers—and spoke to the participants—the Fashion Revue entrants took the stage to show off the clothes they made, clothes they bought, and quilts they made. Champions, reserves, and/ or honorable mentions were then announced for each event, with awards presented for each age division. Those results follow. Cloverbud entrants took part in non-competitive divisions as a learning experience. Performance Arts. Grade 3-5: Emmalie Fluegge, champion; Amelia Kruse, reserve.
