Heavy rains cause road closures across south central and the southwest corner of Minnesota MANKATO, Minn. – The Minnesota Department of Transportation is closely monitoring road conditions in south central and the southwest corner of Minnesota due to flooding caused by heavy rains. Several roads are closed due to flooding, and the situation continues to change. Officials warn that roads may be closed or restricted without warning as flash flooding is difficult to predict. MnDOT advises motorists to drive with caution and check www.511mn.org for updates. As of 8:00 am on June 21, the following highways are closed or have traffic restrictions: Westbound Interstate 90 from Worthington to Luverne. Closed. Eastbound Interstate 90 from Luverne to Adrian. Closed. Highway 13, south of Waseca. Closed, temporary detour. Highway 86 (two miles south of I-90). One lane is closed. Highway 91, north of Adrian. Closed, temporary detour. Highway 75, Luverne to the Iowa border. One lane is closed. Highway 19 east of Henderson. Closed, temporary detour. MnDOT crews will continue to monitor flooded highways and will open them as soon as it is safe to do so. Highways and bridges impacted by floods need to be inspected for damage and safety prior to opening. When a road is closed it is illegal to travel in that area. Motorists can be fined up to $1,000 and/or 90 days in jail. In addition, if travelers need to be rescued from a closed road, other expenses and penalties will apply. UPDATE - No. 2: Update on south central highways impacted by flooding MANKATO, Minn. (11:20 a.m.) – The Minnesota Department of Transportation continues to closely monitor state highways in south central and the southwest corner of Minnesota due to flooding caused by heavy rains. Highway 93 between Highway 169 and Le Sueur closed today (June 22) at 10:30 a.m. Motorists should use alternate routes. Additionally, officials advise that the northbound lanes of Highway 169 north of St. Peter will be closed today (June 22) due to flooding. Traffic will be two-way (head-to-head), in the southbound lanes for approximately two miles. The speed limit will be reduced to 55 MPH in this area. When MnDOT reconstructed Highway 169, it raised the southbound lanes to handle both north and southbound traffic on Highway 169 and added crossovers for traffic switches. MnDOT advises motorists to check www.511mn.org before they travel and be prepared for quickly changing conditions as roads may be closed or restricted without warning. Additionally, drivers should be alert for potential mudslides and use caution if encountering debris on the roadways. (closed June 22) Highway 30 east of Westbrook. Lane closed. (June 22) Highway 30 east of Mapleton. Temporary detour. (closed June 22) Highway 99 Minnesota River bridge, St. Peter. Traffic is detoured to Le Sueur County Roads 21 (Golf Course Road), Shanaska Creek Road, and Highway 22. (closed June 21 at 7 p.m.) Highway 60 in Windom, near the Junction of Hwy 71.
