Project Proposal
The housing market is failing to provide decent, healthy and affordable homes to the students and even young professionals in Wellington. The increase in rent and quality of homes impact the well-being of students. This project is intended to create quality and efficient homes that attempt to reduce the environmental impact as well as create affordable and liveable housings.
Using the research from the previous assignment as well as research made in this current assignment, a concept idea will be made and developed
Single Unit Common House Render
The main concept of this project is co-housing. Co-housing is a cluster of private homes that share facilities and amenities within the co-housing community. Creating a co-housing community is socially, economically, and environmentally sustainable.
PAPAKAINGA - 'LAND AND HOME'
Where Maori lived, worked and raised their families. Settlements where communal units occupy and spend majority of their lives
VERNACULAR CONSTRUCTION:

Centralised Meeting House
Maori homes do not face west but rather faces directions from north to east.

Site Location
Usually located in coastal environments, edges of rivers, streams, or lakes. Their main protein food is fish, eels, and shellfish.
BAHAY NA BATO: STONE FRAME LOWER FLOOR FOR STRUCTURAL DURABILITY, TIMBER UPPER FLOOR

ONDOL:

(Dyer, 1982)

Soil Quality Materials

It was also important that the selected site had good soil and climate; sufficient sun and protected from the winds. This was to ensure the growth of their crops.
ELEVATED FLOOR FOR UNDERFLOOR HEATING. CREATES RADIANT HEAT AND IS MORE EFFICIENT COMPARED TO OTHER FORMS OF HEATING.

Nz Vernacular Materials
More:
Construction
Rectangular, with pitched roof and wide eaves.
Less:
BRICKS CONCRETE RECYCLED STEEL

Timber, rushes, tree ferns, and bark with thatched roofind and earth floors. European settlers introduced higher roofs and glass windows.
Due to the major intersection, the site will experience a lot of noise pollution. Future design should put that into consideration
SITE: Abandoned Tip Top Factory, 200 Adelaide Road, Newtown

Having bus stops near the site will reduce the use of private vehicles as transportation. Frequent buses travel to each university campus; Massey, Kelburn, Te Aro, and Pipitea.
Sun pattern and wind direction will influence the positioning of the buildings to face north and east.
HIGH TRAFFIC
LOW TRAFFIC
SURROUNDING BUILDINGS
Vegetation

Shows the available resources within a walking distance of less than 5 minutes. Reduces vehicular transportation
Indicates the lack of accessible vegetation that should be implemented into design

MATERIALS: notes for development:

- a more efficient use of space may be implemented

- additional windows on the east and west side
