Cultivating Culinary Purpose
by Chrissy Cifuentes
Lifestyles Health and Wealth magazine takes pride in choosing each cover story based on passion and purpose. Each subject we interview has a remarkable story meant to motivate, encourage and harvest destiny for our readers. In this particular issue, Lifestyles chose to highlight New Orleans chef, Dominique Macquet. He recently took the position of head chef at his new, savvy restaurant on Magazine street. The establishment is named Bordeaux, and it is taking the city by storm. It opened March of this year and has since tantalized guests with new, exciting tastes of New Orleans. Chef Macquet prepares each dish with love and generosity. Passion drives him on his daily routine of creating. “I believe my purpose in my career is to please people. I am constantly using the freshest ingredients,” he said. “Instead of masquerading it with heavy cream and butter, I like to keep it simple.” With over 30 years of experience cooking up delicious cuisine, Macquet is determined to keep sharing his plates with locals and tourists alike. According to Macquet, his fresh food is a great example of a bountiful harvest that is good for your health. “I found out that after Hurricane Katrina happened that people were using more farm to table methods,” said Macquet. “So, I am using a lot more local farmers. We use a hundred-mile radius within the restaurant limit.” In an effort to keep his food the freshest possible, Macquet’s biggest resource is his very own restaurant owner, John Engle’s, farm. Engle is a prominent doctor in the region, and Chef Dominique explained that having Dr. Engle grow the ingredients on his own land makes the cuisine extra special. “He will be growing vegetables that I use in my dishes, and we will also have our livestock from there.” Knowing where one’s produce is harvested from gives Macquet and his guests confidence that their meals are not only healthy, but also completely pesticide free. Dr. John Engle has been a medical physician for over 10 years. Opening up Bordeaux is a first-time restaurant adventure for him. The dream became a reality, and now he is planning to utilize his land in Mississippi for Bordeaux’s menu. “I picked up the land as a timber investment, and I do a lot of hunting. I also have cabins,” said Engle. “Now, I have been doing some research so that I can grow for the restaurant.” According to Engle, he will be sowing and harvesting vegetables that can be found specifically in Bordeaux, France. Dragon Tongue, which is similar to butter beans, will be one of the many types of vegetables that locals will have the ability to try. Dr. Engle also mentioned the benefits of growing vegetables and raising livestock on a farm can

extremely improve one’s health. “Many meats found in stores are injected with steroids and hormones. They want to increase the fat content so they give the animals high fat in a shorter period in time,” said Engle. “On my land, the animals be grazing naturally and healthy which causes a lower fat content and leaner meant.” Engle mentioned that having a seasoned chef on his team is such a blessing. Macquet has been a chef within the New Orleans region for years serving at a plethora of different establishments. One of his most recognizable restaurants include Dominiques at the Maison Dupuy. His flavorful dishes are considered the perfect combination of French cuisine with a Louisiana flair. According to Chef Dominique, he describes his style as “light, fresh, flavorful” contemporary French with an Asian influence. He brought this expertise to the tables of Bordeaux, and the first year of its opening has been filled with success. “There are always new restaurants popping up in New Orleans. We like the concept we serve, because it is farm to table,” he said. “We serve wild game like pheasant, guinea fowl, and suckling pig. This makes us unique.” And, what is a New Orleans’ restaurant without seafood? Chef is proud of his seafood menu; especially because it is straight from the Gulf of Mexico. According to Chef Macquet, whatever is in season is his favorite. “The freshest food will always taste the best,” said chef. Some of the succulent meals offered included local flounder, rotisserie duck and pheasant, and softshell crab. Not only is Bordeaux quickly becoming a hot spot for uptown locals, but other admirers of Macquet’s dishes travel statewide to experience the fresh farm to table dinners. Also, atmosphere and experience are two other important factors that should be top notch for patrons. One can find themselves not only lost in the food, but also transfixed on the stylish ambiance. Diners are presented with a variety of offers by a friendly staff ready to serve. Many focus on Chef Macquet’s story in the culinary arts as the major focus of his success; however, there is much more to his efforts. His heart is even bigger than the harvest he brings fourth to New Orleanians each night. While living in our city, he has fed countless people and put smiles on their faces with
his exquisite tastes. For chef, his food is art, and his plate is the pallet. Macquet is always willing to find time to display his efforts to his community whether it be local charities, teaching children or supporting animals in need. He is an accomplished writer and has published two cook books titled “Fresh Flavors” and “Tropical Latitudes.” Each book is designed to inspire others with the travels of chef and his innovative favors which come from his experiences. Also, chef uses his instructing talents to assist others to be able to recognize their fullest potential in the kitchen. For years he has traveled to Walt Disney World to teach classes to the masses. Although he will not be going to cook in the “happiest place on Earth” this year, he is thankful for over 20 years of gracing the sidewalks of Disney World. Chef Macquet’s accomplishments in the kitchen are second to none; however, his biggest accomplish is in the title of father. He is proud dad of his eleven-year-old daughter, Nadya. When he is not preparing edible art, he is spending time with her riding bikes or vacationing. Like her dad, Nadya is an avid artist. She plays numerous instruments and enjoys musical theatre. The pair just came back home from a trip to Key West where he and his daughter caught fresh fish and had plenty adventures to add to the next book of travels. While meditating on chef’s passion and pursuit of all things delicious, one thing is for certain. His role as one of New Orleans’ most influential chefs is only beginning to transpire. He is a wonderful example of how to blend flavors as well as balance time. By serving his community and family with his heart of giving, our city is much more beautiful- and delicious.

CONTINUITY OF HEALTHY LIVING
Emotions
I was called to the emergency room to evaluate a patient who suffered a cardiorespiratory arrest. He was unconscious, and was intubated, assisted by a ventilator machine. His EKG showed that he was having a heart attack. The patient was started on a cooling treatment to preserve his brain function. He was taken to the cardiac catheterization lab, where after taking pictures of his coronary arteries, a stent was placed in the blocked artery. The 24 hours cooling phase was started. Cold fluids were given intravenously, and ice bags and a cooling vest were placed on the patient’s body. After this period, the 24 hours warming phase was started. A neurological evaluation was performed. An Echocardiogram was done to evaluate his heart strength and function. The patient gradually recovered without any brain or heart damage. The cooling therapy was successful in preserving his vital organs. This brings us to a dramatic story of a very rich man. His name was Nabal. He was mean, stingy, greedy, and extremely stubborn. His wife Abigail was kind, wise, generous and very beautiful. David, before becoming King, was being persecuted by Saul, the king of Israel. David and his soldiers were very kind, always doing good deeds, helping and protecting the people of the land. They even protected the shepherds of this rich man. One day David asked Nabal for food supplies for his army. His request was totally denied in a very harsh way. For a long time David and his men guarded the rich man’s shepherds, his cattle and possessions, without demanding anything in return. David and 400 of his soldiers marched towards the rich man’s ranch, determined to kill his household. Fortunately
8
Abigail was informed about her husband’s stubbornness, and after giving abundant supplies to David, and talking to him respectfully, and with convincing wisdom, she avoided a massacre. When Abigail returned to the ranch, she found her husband extremely drunk, after partying with his men. She waited till next morning to inform him about what had happened after he rejected David’s soldiers; how she avoided the destruction of Nabal’s men. He didn’t take it well; “his heart died, and he became like a stone”. After 10 days he died. Isn’t it remarkable how our emotions can bring us life or destroy us? The works of the flesh are hatred, contentions, jealousies, outbursts of wrath, selfish ambitions, dissensions, envy, drunkenness and the like. The fruit of the spirit is love, joy, peace, long suffering, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self control. Hear my advise: cool your emotions and live. Welcome to the balanced life.

Health & Wealth
What does it take to get a good harvest? You need good seeds, good soil, good fertilizer, and a good environment to create healthy plants that will produce a bountiful harvest that is good for your body. When it to our health we would like to create a harvest of healthy bones and muscles, a healthy heart and lungs. A clear mind and a body full of energy with no pain and sickness. But is that what we are harvesting? Have we given our bodies good nutrition, healthy foods, and drinks? Not if we are drinking acidic bottled waters, soda’s, and sports drinks, not if we are eating foods covered in pesticides grown in soil robed of the needed nutrients. Not if we are cleaning our homes with toxic chemicals that our families are breathing in, and drinking out of plastic bottles that are made with at least 19 known cancer causing and endocrine disrupting chemicals. And if we consider our children, what is all this doing to them. What are we doing to the health of our children? Did you know when I was a child we never heard of children with cancer? Did you know that cancer is now the number 1 killer of children? If we want to harvest good health and change the direction of future generations we have to wake up and take notice of what we are putting in our bodies and what we are giving to our children. CONTINUITY OF HEALTHY LIVING
Healing the Skin
with Purpose
BY CHRISSY CIFUENTES
Dr. David Pate’s mission is to serve the community of the Northshore and its surrounding regions by giving quality care for those in need. He works with Northshore Dermatology in Slidell and has years of experience within the field. Born and raised in Vicksburg, Mississippi, Pate traveled to Louisiana State University to pursue his career in medicine. It was at college where he met his wife and began his journey towards dermatology. During med school, he matched into the field of dermatology and attended Texas Tech. It was in those years that he fell in love with his profession of choice and learned from some of the best of the medical world. “I loved Texas and had some of the greatest mentors in the world there,” said Pate. “I really fell in love with the surgical aspect and treating skin cancer.” While in Texas, he saw many patients who worked in the oil fields and fields. The sun’s rays caused extensive damage to their skin, and Pate was using his love of dermatology to help heal the devastating side effects of working in the sunlight for an extensive period of time. “The burden of skin cancer in America is so high right now,” stated Pate. “There is more skin cancers diagnosed in America this year then all of the other forms of cancers combined.” Living in southeast Louisiana, many do not realize the vital factor that the sun plays on one’s health. Although one may have a desk job, that does not discriminate when it comes to developing a deadly form of skin cancer. “Even if you love hunting or going fishing, this can be a possibility,” he said. “Especially going into New Orleans with your commute. The left side of your body gets a lot of sun damage. We are getting
10
UV damage every day, and we are living longer as well.” When thinking of skin cancer, the mind almost always goes towards sunlight being the cause; however, Dr. Pate shared that medications can sometimes be the culprit. “Sometimes we are suppressing our immune system by taking these medicines and years later, we receive more skin cancer. So many factors have led us to where we are today with skin cancer in America.” According to Dr. Pate, Louisiana residents can still maintain their love of the outdoors by making some simple changes. “It can be done with simple modifications,” said Pate. “In the morning, put on some facial moisturizers with SPF for the morning commute.” Another way of beating the side effects of the sun is wearing tight knit SPF clothing. “They make great SPF clothing that you can wear that is highly breathable. Wear wide brim hats in peak hours in the sun which is 11to 3 o’clock. You can even buy wash in sunscreen products that you can wash into your clothes.” As the sun continually beats down on pedestrians in the Louisiana heat, Dr. Pate urges one to always wear protective clothing and most importantly use a protective sunscreen. “SPF 35 to 50 really helps out. The biggest key is finding one that you find most comfortable,” he said. “Some are very thick, but they have made it now where there are micronized versions.” These sunscreens and blocks can be used all over the body, whether it be the face or the limbs. Many are waterproof and can be comfortably reapplied when necessary. “This is one of the biggest keys when it comes to preventing skin cancer,” said Pate. Not only does the usage of sunscreen prevent cancers from developing, but it also turns back the hands of time. “It helps reduce the signs of aging when you apply your sunscreen,” said Pate. Studies have shown that high school students respond
Health & Wealth
more positively to the use of sunscreen when they are presented with the side effects of aging. “This evidence of aging is more convincing for young people to use sunscreen than talking about cancers, because they can see how the sun can age you. The sun can break down the elastic fibers in the skin causing it to have a leathery appearance.” Dr. Pate pointed out that the times have changed when it comes to sun protection. In the past, people were praised on their tan bodies drenched in baby oil; however, we now know that too much laying out can have a negative effect which will last a lifetime if the measures are too severe. “People now know that you do have an increase in cancer when you do these activities, and you can age your skin down the line,” he said. “The front end is no big deal. I’ll just tan for the summer. The back end has much more complications. Every summer one in three Americas receive a sun burn which makes you a greater risk for cancer.” For the people who go into the tanning beds, this risk is even worse. “The world health organization says that the tanning bed is a class one carcinogen,” stated Pate. “All the damage we are getting in tanning beds adds so much on top of everything else.” The rate of cancer in those who use tanning beds is becoming so prevalent that laws are being made in most states regarding the usage of the beds. “In Louisiana, you have to be at least 18 years old to use the tanning bed,” he said. “Most states at least require parental consent so you know the risk.” Dr. Pate educates his patients on the importance of healthy skin on a daily basis; however, he explained that there are many tips that one should follow in order to maintain healthy skin throughout his whole life. “One habit would be
www.lifestyleshealthandwealth.com
to go outside when it isn’t the peak of the day,” stated Pate. “Choose the moisturizer with SPF. If you know you are going out tailgating, think about how much sun you are getting. It is making the right choices in the beginning with having the right products.” It is all about routine, and Dr. Pate strongly encourages everyone in this sunny state to improve their health by constructing wise skin care habits.

The Importance of a Positive Attitude in Life see how important your attitude is? Changing your attitude can literally change your life. It did mine. And here’s the great thing about attitude: It’s your choice. BY RYAN LOWE
Why is attitude so important? Because it determines everything else in your life! Attitude isn’t just about whether or not you’re having a good or bad day. Attitude is more than that. It affects relationships. It affects careers. It affects your entire future. I’ve met people who went through something similar to what I did. They were flying high, had a great business, and then lost it all. Years later, they’re still talking about their problems and misfortunes. For some of them, their spouse left them and they were forced to sell the family business. With others, their business partner was cheating them. Some had their major customer go out of business. These people are talented, experienced, and smart. If they would start another business, the odds of success this time could be quite good. Unfortunately, they’re still reliving the events that led up to their failure. Their negative attitude won’t let them get on with their life. I know how they feel. I know what failure feels like. I lost my business. It hurts. What’s the difference between those negative thinking people and me? It’s our attitudes. I’m not any better than they are or any smarter than they are. I am different from them in one way: I chose to see my past and my future differently. In The Winning Attitude, John Maxwell summed up the idea of attitude. Let me share it with you: Attitude… It is the “advance man” of our true selves. Its roots are inward but its fruit is outward. It is our best friend or our worst enemy. It is more honest and more consistent than our words. It is an outward look based on past experiences. It is a thing which draws people to us or repels them. It is never content until it is expressed. It is the librarian of our past. It is the speaker of our present. It is the prophet of our future. Can you
www.lifestyleshealthandwealth.com
Your attitude is a habit. Most people I meet have a bad habit of believing they can’t do anything; of talking down to themselves, and of living a life of quiet defeat. They think, talk, and act as if it’s impossible for them to succeed. If this is you—stop it! When I’m guilty of that, I remind myself of this truth: Watch your thoughts, for they become words. Watch your words, for they become actions. Watch your actions, for they become habits. Watch your habits, for they become character. Watch your character, for it becomes your destiny. —Unknown Do you see it!? If you want to live a fulfilling life—one filled with an abundance of health, wealth, and happiness— it starts with how you think, talk, and act! Living the life of your dreams starts with getting into a habit of being positive in how you think, talk, and act. That’s it! The flip side of the coin is if you have a habit of thinking, talking, and acting negatively, you are living a life far below what you can achieve. Two of my favorite books are The Power of Positive Thinking by Norman Vincent Peale and Success through a Positive Mental Attitude by Napoleon Hill and W. Clement Stone. These books underscore the basic idea that success and fulfillment in life begins with your thoughts. GOYA-ism: If you control your thoughts, and control your choices, you’ll create a brighter future! I hear some people say, “I can’t help it. Somebody tells me something and I just react,” or, “I can’t help how I feel.” Children react to life; adults respond to it. Sure, when something happens, you instantly feel an emotion, whether it’s grief, or anger, or anxiety. But immature people fail to realize they don’t have to act immediately on that emotion. They can choose how to respond. When I’m tempted to just lash out at something, I remember something I once heard: Life is 10% what happens to you and 90% how you respond to it. —Charles Swindoll Some people believe they don’t have a choice and that their
13
fate is out of their hands—that God, life, the universe, or whoever, decides what will happen to them. They have this passive approach to life that whatever happens, happens. Yes, those things play into the big picture, but you have a choice of what you do about it. God gave me the phrase “get off your attitude.” I could have dropped it or ignored it. I could have stayed negative with a victim’s mentality. But I decided to do something. You can do the same thing! You
have the power to change your life. Believe this: If there is anything you want to change in your world, change your attitude toward it. That’s my version of The Law of Attitude! Life isn’t about what happens to you—it’s what you do about it. Honestly, you can’t change much of what happens in life, but you can change how you look at it. That, in turn, changes everything! “Remember that it is up to you to choose everyday to Get off Your Attitude and to create a positive lifestyle for yourself and others” Ryan C. Lowe

A Fitness Harvest WHAT WILL YOURS REAP? The Word of God says the following in Galatians 6:7-9 - Do not be deceived: God is not mocked, for whatever one sows, that will he also reap. For the one who sows to his own flesh will from the flesh reap corruption, but the one who sows to the Spirit will from the Spirit reap eternal life. And let us not grow weary of doing good, for in due season we will reap, if we do not give up. Now, that’s a mouth full, because when it comes to our physical fitness life, what we eat determines the harvest we reap! The law of sowing and reaping applies to everything that can increase. If a farmer sows in his field, he WILL reap; however what he reaps depends on what type of seeds he planted, the weather, rainfall and more. The same is true of our physical body. What we sow in eating as well as how much we sow in working out determines what we will reap (a healthier physical life or not). Notice in this scripture above, though, that it speaks about the flesh (physical body) and about the Spirit (our spiritual essence). This refers to the Holy Spirit that dwells

within us..…you know, that little nudge you feel inside from time to time. I like to call Him “my knower”. God desires for us to be in health. Our Spirit man and our soul cries out for it! God’s Word says in 3 John 1:2 - Beloved, I pray that you may prosper in all things and be in health, even as your soul prospers. It is EVIDENT the harvest of what has been sown in our physical bodies. Aside from those of us that suffer from conditions that we have no ability to control, the majority of what we see in the mirror is the harvest of what we’ve sown by our eating choices and workout habits. As we enter into this season of the harvest, what is your harvest looking like? Are you happy with it? Or, are you cringing at the harvest that is before you? Take time to consider why your harvest looks like it does. If it isn’t the harvest you’d hope for, be encouraged! It’s never too late to start sowing seeds of health and fitness. Many times people just need to hit the place where they’re sick and tired of being sick and tired! If that’s you, start walking, join a gym, push yourself away from the table, drink more water, or enlist the help of a professional. The best harvest you can give yourself physically starts with sowing seeds of good choices! Go for it! Make the change now and sow new seeds that will bring the harvest you’re believing for. And, be sure to sow into your spirit man, so that you will reap prosperity and peace for your soul. I beseech you, therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that you present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable to God, which is your reasonable service. Romans 12:1 I pray you’ve been blessed!

A recipe with the purpose to heal! Local Chef Muggsy Beals creates a superfood product that relieves arthritis and inflammation When New Orleans Executive Chef Muggsy Beals of Desi Vega’s Steakhouse arrived to work last year, he was greeted with disappointing news that one of his prep cooks, George, was turning in his notice to quit working. George had been with the restaurant since it opened in 2013, primarily doing prep work such as wrapping shrimp in bacon each day – but severe arthritis was setting in and George’s hands were cramped so severely that it impeded his ability to do his job. Upon hearing the news, Chef Muggsy, who believes in the healing properties of food, decided to do extensive research on ingredients that George could buy from the store to help eliminate the inflammation and pain. Days went by with Chef persistently asking George, “Did you buy the ingredients and start taking them?” The answer was always the same -- George did not. So Chef Muggsy decided to buy all the ingredients and combine them so that all George would have to do is eat a couple of teaspoons a day of Chef ’s ready-to-eat recipe. Within 3 days, George’s hands returned to normal, and the inflammation was completely gone. Chef has always been a firm believer that people don’t realize that our bodies are designed to work – as long as we honor them with proper nutrition. “Instead of people eating the right food, people are lead to believe that they have to buy over-the-counter remedies to heal problems,” says Chef Muggsy.“But many of these over-the-counter drugs actually can be very harmful!” All one has to do is watch a commercial or read the inserts attached to medicine bottles to see the long lists of harmful side effects. It’s no secret that whole foods contain many healing properties that help fuel bodies and can actually heal ailments. Chef started making this home-made recipe for his friends in the industry, and then his family members, and the members of a local cancer survivor group. Everyone started reporting that their inflammation was disappearing and mobility was returning to swollen joints.
www.lifestyleshealthandwealth.com
Because of the great results. Chef decided to make the product available to the public by selling this product on line. The Kindness Cross Project by Chrissy Cifuentes Eva and Liza Kliebert are two, beautifully sweet twin girls with an even sweeter purpose. That purpose is to sprinkle kindness where ever they go! With the help of their dedicated mother, Regan Kliebert, the girls created “The Kindness Cross Project.” And what started as a school challenge to express kindness, quickly shifted into a much larger purpose. It all started back in March of 2018 while Regan was taking care of her newest baby, Vada. Little did she know that an art project meant to preoccupy her daughters would inspire so many throughout their community and beyond. “Eva and Liza love all things crafty and artsy, so when I remembered about some wooden crosses I had recently purchased, I sent them off to our play room to start painting,” said Regan. “I knew it would buy me some time to take care of my baby with less distractions. The girls were so proud, and in the blink of an eye they had painted about 25 crosses.” That very same night, Regan was inspired by her girls and their artistic abilities. She envisioned the crosses as symbols of hope for those who needed a reminder of love. Along with the idea of the “Kindness Crosses” came a poem which would accompany each piece. The poem states, “Keep it for a day or two, then pass it on to someone new, if we spread kindness everywhere, there’s more love that’s in the air.” Just like that,
www.lifestyleshealthandwealth.com 20
the “Kindness Cross Project” was born, and the girls were ready to bring smiles to those needing a dash of joy. “The next day, the girls were excited to put the poem down on paper in their very own handwriting. We attached the poem to the crosses and started giving them away. It was fun and brought on so many smiles,” stated Regan. After blessing the crosses to family and friends, the response became astonishing. Not only were people passing along the kindness, but also they were giving the pieces as gifts. The idea of the crosses quickly developed into a new project called “Cross Blocks.” The colorful, hand painted blocks serve as another symbol of kindness. Their stunning exterior is meant to catch the eye and serve as a representation of Jesus’ loving kindness. There is a bold, gold cross directly in the center. The blocks are also accompanied with a new poem which is handwritten by the girls on the back. Just like the initial cross poem, these words are also meant to stir up the love of God every time someone takes the time to read. To say that these little ones have made a big impact would be an understatement. Their dedication to spreading sweetness has propelled into thousands of sales of their artwork, and the kindness does not stop there. Each month, the ladies make a donation to a charity of choice. Now the girls and their mother are expanding their horizons for newer projects. “We have since created a line of prayer intention blocks for the loss of a loved one, for mothers, for sons, for daughters, for pregnancy, and for healing,” she said. “Our newest creations are inspirational candles that come with an inspiring message on each candle hand written by the girls.”

Regan Kliebert explains that the project has brought countless life lessons to not only those who receive the crosses, but also to her little ones. The importance of imparting kindness in small ways can make some of the biggest changes. “I could seriously go on and on about the lessons this project has taught us all. It brings tears to my eyes actually,” said Kliebert. “My girls have seen that kindness really leaves an impression on people and can change the course of someone’s day. We’ve received many messages through our Facebook page about the impact that we’ve made on someone. The messages serve as a reminder to the girls that they’re work really has meaning. Making donations through the project has taught the girls a lesson on being generous to others who need assistance. I’m beyond proud of my girls and the empathy they show to others who are struggling in some way.” The girls have immense plans for the future and will continue to sell their pieces of art on their Facebook page. Dreams of a website and shipping are goals for
the future, and this busy mother of three is ready to keep reaching the masses with the message of love. Painting and poems are quickly turning into written drafts for a book. “We are currently drafting a book that corresponds to our ‘Kindness Cross Project’,” said Kliebert. “It’s so obvious to me that God drives this project. We continue to pray that He will guide us and make it all it is meant to be.” In the meantime, Regan Kliebert urges the youth across Louisiana to take part in building the arts. She has seen the monumental impact it has had on her children, and she hopes that their work will inspire many other families to tune into their bigger purpose. “Art is such an awesome way

for kids to express themselves. There’s no right or wrong in art and I always remind my girls that they’re work can be whatever they want it to be,” she said. “In a world that can often times be so judgmental and competitive its so nice for my girls to have an outlet that they can just let loose in.” When asked if there was anything this proud mother of three wanted to share with readers she said, “Focus on the good. There is so much good in this world, so never stop looking for it. Kindness is contagious. Start where you are... in this moment... and chose the KIND thing. In turn, you’re basically changing the world.” FACEBOOK.COM/THEKINDNESSCROSSPROJECT

VOICE OF OUR YOUTH PURSUIT OF PURPOSE
Everyday Thanks As we approach the end of another year as well as the holidays right around the corner, there’s a lot to think about. Every single one of us are in different seasons of our life, may be good or bad. But, with the power of Jesus and his love for us you would get through it. Don’t believe me Deuteronomy 31:8 “It is the Lord who goes before you. He will be with you; he will not fail you or forsake you. Do not fear or be dismayed.” One of my favorite holidays is Thanksgiving, Christmas is pretty cool too. I love Thanksgiving, because it’s a day you share a meal with family and close friends and share what matters the most to you and reflect on what Jesus has done for you. People see Thanksgiving as a way to just to eat good food. That is not what Thanksgiving is about. Thanksgiving is a time to be thankful for the things you have. I’m thankful for a lot of things like my family, my home my church, and many other things.

BY ALEX SERRANO
In my heart, I feel Thanksgiving should be every day of the year. There are many blessing Jesus does for you. Some you might not even know yet. If you are reading this right now, you are blessed. Remember to always thank God for his blessings. Spread love and positivity. Tell your parents you love them before it’s too late. The world is getting crazier by the day, so stay to your morals. You have a purpose in life, and if you listen to Jesu,s he will guide you into the right path. Then Jesus came to them and said, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Therefore, go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.” Matthew 28:18-20. Jesus loves you.

Camp Swan GIVING BACK TO CHILDREN
by Chrissy Cifuentes
Losing a loved one is an inevitable part of life. Just as we are born into this world, we will all return to our maker one day. Dealing with the grief of losing a loved one can be difficult for an adult and even more difficult for a child. That’s what Camp Swan is about... helping the children learn to grieve in a healthy, loving environment.
24
AN AKULA FOUNDATION EVENT
Camp Swan began in New Orleans in early 2000 when it was determined there was a true need to assist the children of Louisiana after the loss of a loved one by using practical ways that help foster healing and promote growth in a healthy atmosphere whether the loss be through tragedy or natural causes. The Camp was designed to allow children the right to express themselves freely through song, arts, crafts, sharing and trusting in a setting grouped with other children experiencing the same thing. Trained
Health & Wealth
professionals are at the heart of each therapy group; guiding with their expertise and trained volunteers are present to give love and hope for the future. Tim Rutledge is the Director of the Akula Foundation, a 501©(3) corporation, and states that this camp can be monumental for a child who has been suddenly struck with the loss of a loved one. “Our focus is to equip each child with the proper tools to overcome such a loss and give them an outlet to express themselves.” Camp Swan offers activities and exercises designed to bring out the best in each child! The children will be entertained through group therapy, games, music, sports and the arts. Children are addressed both individually and in groups. Through these therapeutic experiences, each child will be given the proper tools to help them feel they have an outlet to express their feelings of loneliness, sadness and grief. Rutledge urges all parents or guardians of children to seek counsel when it comes to consoling young, grieving children. Providing emotional support and encouragement are extremely important. Camp Swan is a three day, two night camp FREE to children ages 7-12 who have experienced the loss of a loved one. This year’s camp will be held on November 22-November 24, 2019 at Camp Living Waters in Loranger, Louisiana. For more information on Camp Swan or to register your child, please call 504-818-2723 or visit the website at Akulafoundation.com. You may also email the director at trutledge@canonhospice.org.

Empty Nesters – The Question to Downsize or Stay Recently, I have had the pleasure of helping several clients sell houses that have been the family home. When the last child goes off to college or gets married it’s a new stage of life for both parents & children alike. As empty nester syndrome sets in, putting up the For Sale sign seems like the natural next step. Some people choose to keep the family home for when the kids comes back home for holidays with their families, especially if the kids live out of state. I think it’s always fun for grandparents to have a “grandkids room” complete with beds & special toys that you can’t find any place else! You know why you can’t find them any place else – because the toys are ones that their parents played with when they were children! Then there are those that decide they don’t want as much house & yard to maintain so they opt to downsize. This doesn’t mean you can’t still have a “grandkids room”. Different stages of life means things have different value to you – a suburb with great schools are no longer that important, a master bedroom on the first floor now becomes a necessity as you look down the road, perhaps you are looking for a walkable community or a place on the water. Another option might be moving cross country to be near adult children & grandchildren, moving closer to aging parents or perhaps where the weather & community amenities make aging as comfortable as possible. Maybe, it’s time to look for a home that will serve as multi-generational for years to come. Our move reflects our changing priorities. Ok, you have decided to sell the family home. Selling any home can be emotional & stressful but selling the family home where you have lived for decades is sometimes a little more challenging. This is the home where there have been dozens of celebrations from birthday parties, holiday gatherings to nightly family dinners, playing in the backyard. This is where your kids learned to walk, talk, you took pics of them before

prom, maybe your house was the hot hang out spot when they were teenagers, where they came home to on college breaks. Remember, these are your memories, you take them with you. I often suggest to my clients to take lots of pictures of the house before you start to declutter & get ready to put it on the market. Don’t forget all the details like the curtains, the wallpaper, where you marked your kid’s height, any special place where your kids recorded life events. I have a friend whose daughter kept track of all the boys she ever liked on the back wall of her closet. You will always have the pictures to look back at when you think about your home. A photo album or book would make a special gift for each child that they would treasure. I made my first photo book a few weeks ago, I had no idea how easy they were to make & I loved the finished book. Neurologists say change is good for the brain – embrace that! Skin GENE-IUS The Science to Beautiful Skin
PART III: Melanin Production, Defense and Repair - Pigmentation
by Dr. Kelly G. Burkenstock
In Louisiana, our culture and backgrounds are as diverse as seafood gumbo! Did you know that our family genes determine how our skin ages? Supporting the weaknesses in our unique DNA gene blue print can in part turn back the sands of time. As we age, our skin loses moisture and elasticity, making it prone to developing fine lines, wrinkles and enlarged pores. We also lose our ability to produce collagen and elastin, causing the skin to become less firm and to lose its flexibility. While developing wrinkles is an unavoidable part of the aging process, it can be slowed down or prevented to some degree. Most wrinkling is due to extrinsic aging, which is caused by environmental factors and lifestyle choices such as smoking, sun exposure, alcohol abuse, air pollution, poor diet, and lack of sleep. Prolonged sun exposure is by far the leading cause of early wrinkling. UV light breaks down the collagen and elastin fibers that form our skin’s connective tissues. As a result, the skin becomes weaker and less elastic, causing photo damage and wrinkles to appear. Good news is, there are ways you can protect your skin from the sun, including daily use of sunscreen (containing zinc or titanium), and wearing protective clothing. Maintaining a healthy diet, getting enough sleep, and not smoking are other important ways to combat extrinsic aging. Intrinsic aging, on the other hand, is the natural process our skin goes through as we get older and is dependent on our genetic DNA makeup. Age-related gene DNA changes vary from person to person based on an individual’s genetics and the body’s many internal processes. Your DNA genes play a deciding factor in how your skin ages with time much in the same way they affect whether you
28
are short or tall, or have blue eyes versus brown eyes. A sign of intrinsic aging, for example, is thinner and more fragile skin that occurs naturally over time. Genetics also determine our ability to generate collagen and elastin, which give us elasticity and resistance to wrinkles and enlarged pores. Genetic variants in the MMP1 and STXBP5L genes specifically have been associated with increased risk of developing wrinkles. The best anti-wrinkle defense is to understand your individual gene risk factors, and support your gene weaknesses with a combination and custom plan to support your unique gene weaknesses in the five Skin Gene categories. Over time this can help build collagen and thus improve the skin’s appearance. Cutting edge DNA testing now allows us to dive even deeper and identify the specific genes that increase our susceptibility to aging. By understanding our genetic predisposition to wrinkles, as well as other skin conditions, we can make proactive changes to eliminate, reduce, or delay symptoms and have you feeling and looking your best. Your unique Skin DNA genes can be analyzed with a simple cheek swab. Your Skin DNA Gene results are then used to customize a personal skin care program to halt premature skin aging. This can save you time and money as many of us have spent large sums of money on useless or even skin damaging lotions, potions and spa treatments. Your DNA guided program combined with hydration, fresh fruits and vegetables, good nutrition, sleep and exercise are a wonderful combination to fight and turn back the hands of time. However, by leading an unhealthy lifestyle, most skin gene types will take a beating and age faster.

Have you ever heard, “Trust your gut”? Did you take that advice? Today’s science shows that may be the best advice you could have ever taken. The gut is now known as, The Second Brain. The feeling of butterflies, that uncomfortable turning or just that little hesitation in your stomach that seems to come from nowhere, is actually connected to your subconscious brain and is part of your fight or flight system. This illogical response is actually a chemical and electromagnetic recording in your cellular memory and it can save your life. The lower intestines have over 100 million nerve cells comprised in two thin layers of your gastrointestinal tract, which starts in the esophagus and ends in the rectum. This nerve system is called the enteric nervous system (ENS). It is responsible for the entire digestion from the release of enzymes, to the elimination of waste. It has been said by researchers the gut brain communicates more to the brain than the brain does to the gut and can operate apart from the brain. In fact, the gut sends signals to the brain that effect our subconscious decisions. Recent studies are revealing that an unhealthy gut can cause depression, Bipolar disorders, Parkinson’s, dementia and Alzheimer’s just to mention a few. Disruption of the bowel eco system can cause brain fog, impaired thinking, memory loss, anxiety, skin issues, diabetes, obesity, auto immune disorders and the list seems endless. The answer to our overall wellbeing lies in restoring our emotional health and our gut health. I have studied the body and the effects unresolved emotions have on the body for over 34 years, and worked as a life coach for over 25 years.

BY ANGELA Q. BERTONE
I recently heard a research scientist from NASA, speak on the science that confirms that unresolved emotions have a direct correlation to our gut health and therefore our entire health both physical and mental. I was recently introduced to something that has over 70 years of peer reviewed science, but is not commonly known to the American public. We were all supposed to receive our immune wisdom from our mothers during birth and moments after our birth. This method was designed by God to transfer our genealogical immune knowledge from mother to child. This gift is a pure immunity molecule of knowledge and wisdom. In fact, if we don’t have this molecule, we die. Moreover, if we have too few, we cannot maintain our health nor can we repair any damage that we may have experienced. Two years ago, something happed on the West Coast that is changing the way America will approach health and wellness forever. This event was a punctured colon of a young girl. Due to the accidental puncture a deadly bacterium entered into her blood. After the doctors gave this child 3 days to live, a frantic mother reached out on social media asking the world for help. A stranger brought her this immunity molecule and that is where everything changed. When this child beat all the odds and lived, a tsunami of information about immune knowledge was released. Because you are reading this article, you are one of the many blessed ones to be caught up in this health and wellness revolution. I had no idea this information is in our doctors Physicians Desk Reference. How is it that something so powerful could have been around for 70 years, on our doctors’ desk, but we have not heard about it. I asked the same question to my doctor. The answer is, up until now, there were simply not enough representatives to go out and tell them. That has since changed and now there is an army of us spreading the word. If you want more information, you can contact me at 985320-4359. I can also be scheduled to speak on this topic at your next event.

CONTINUITY OF HEALTHY LIVING
BY LAURA COTTINGIM
There is a Season... We are stepping into a new season, a time when routines circle around again. School begins, the trees change color, the nights become longer and the harvesting of fruits, vegetables, nuts and grains takes place. What a perfect time to settle into reflecting on one’s self, what your values are, what your goals and dreams are, and what life means to you. It’s a perfect time to find purpose and reflect on all. It is a time to seek balance and allow the steady flow of all things to come. Also, it is a time to reflect on change, not only around us, but within us too. When the season changes, we often experience an internal shift. We may feel venerable and a bit unsettled. We may suffer from emotional distress, due to reduced daylight hours. This reduction in light will be accompanied by a change in schedule and a reduction of our active hours. One can look at this as an opportunity

to change what no longer serves us and an opportunity to harvest new thought patterns that will help us live an extraordinary life. We go through many stages throughout life’s journey. There are times of struggle and sorrow and times of joy and celebration. It’s this balance which keeps us in rhythm with nature and all that is. All emotions and actions, both negative and positive, have important meaning and we will experience them all throughout life. Tearing down, building up, weeping, laughing, mourning, dancing, searching and letting go. Like a caterpillar going through the metamorphosis of becoming a butterfly, with every season, you’re becoming a new person. You may develop new traits and interests your old self didn’t have. You may feel compelled to change your hairstyle or wardrobe, or redecorate your living space. You’ll begin reordering your outer situation to reflect your inner rebirth. Fine-tuning may be all you need. Focus your attention on whatever is happening right now. Keep working towards your dreams, and know it’s okay to feel discouraged if your initial efforts are unsuccessful. Keep trying, but be gentle on yourself. There are many miracles that happen in our lives each and every day. There is a time for every purpose. Allow your metamorphosis to take place in its own time.

Atone and beAt One Have you every thought about the word atone? It means to make amends, reparation, restitution, and recompense. These words don’t really break it down for me, so I dug a little deeper. Etymology reveals that it means to be in harmony with each other, to agree with or to be in one accord. We could say a relational rest where two are experiencing the same feelings and those feelings produce the feelings of unity and rest. As I look at this word, I am taken aback that the meaning was right in front of me and yet I was too blind to notice. The word is literally at one. Where the two are walking as one (At ONE). This is often experienced in joy and happiness, but what about in bad times? Anyone can rejoice with us, but who can suffer with us? Wow! Hidden in plain sight. In the book of Romans chapter 1, it says that God hid himself in everything created and it is clearly seen, and we are without excuse. It says that Gods eternal power and His godhead are clearly seen, yet throughout history mankind hasn’t’ been able to agree on what or who God is. How can we be reconciled to a God that we find difficult to know and understand? To reconcile, means to bring back into trust or to overcome distrust. It indicates to suffer the pains of whatever sacrifice is necessary to sooth and reunite the feelings of trust and unity. This means to restore two or more persons friendship after estrangement or variance. Could it be that we once knew God and that living in this limited existence of the human experience we have felt somehow abandoned or forsaken by God? Jesus is called The Christ. It is His sacrifice that The Bible calls sacrificial atonement from God to restore us

back to Himself as Father. Jesus Himself, cried out on the cross indicating that he felt forsaken. It is written that if we suffer with Him, we shall also reign with Him. Have you felt His suffering and yours at the same time for the purpose of reconciliation? In a very painful time in my life, feeling forsaken, I cried out in desperation seeking an invisible God. It was in this deep sorrow that God revealed His heart to me. It felt like I was back in time and in the Garden of Gethsemane. I looked upon our Savior as He cried out to be delivered. He looked at me and said, my Father promised me that He would not deliver me. I came to Earth to suffer with you and in the garden, I was allowed to feel your pain. I knew then, that He didn’t just know me as God, but He knew my heart. I felt one in our suffering and I no longer felt forsaken. It was in that moment that I felt At-One with the one who would die to restore me to Our Father. For this reason, He came. May today you feel AtOne with God and be reconciled. Some may wonder how to go about choosing a tree servicing company or what the major steps are to accomplish while tending to their properties. Many ask the question, “How do I begin?” As the seasons change, so does our home landscapes. Wil Kingston has advice for home and business owners who are looking to spruce up their yards throughout the autumn months.
#1 What should home owners know before contacting a tree service? “Homeowners should know first off what it is that they are trying to accomplish. By doing so, they can better choose a company more suited to their needs. Is it logging they want done, pruning, removals, stump grinding, feeding diagnosis, forest management, or just being prepared for the storm season. Then if you have not chosen a service that you’re comfortable with, always ask for more than one bid. Ask a lot of questions. Not just about the service to be done, but about the company itself. Ask about the other trees in your yard. Ask about life spans, dangerous situations or liability. Ask about long term plans. Ask if the company offers a maintenance service. Also it’s very important to always use a company that is state licensed. Last, ask about any drug testing policies in place. Very important!” stated Wil. #2 Why The Tree Wise Men? “Just look at our Google reviews, and you will find more five star reviews than any other company in St. Tammany Parish. If it’s not exactly how you want it, we fix it or don’t pay. Simple. From a personal stand point, I’d like to add that we love what we do. We love the Lord. Therefore, we love people. We care more about the relationship we develop than the dollar amount we walk away with. It’s our goal to make a friend that uses us to help with their trees, not make clients. Our men are professional and use absolutely no profanity or lewd behavior at your home. We treat it with the respect it deserves. We are also safe. We don’t take chances. Last but not least, our prices are discounted looking at the whole picture. It’s our perspective and hopes to be you’re only choice for the future,” he said.
#3 So, what kind of services do you offer and what should we plan on for this season? “We Offer an array of services from tree removal’s diagnosis to treating pruning and trimming maintenance services forest management lot clearing and stump grinding. Our passion, if I had to narrow down, would definitely be trimming. we are fortunate enough to trim some of the oldest trees in the region. In fact, we’ve been very fortunate to be allowed to trim some of the oldest and largest Live Oaks in St Tammany Parish which we are very proud of. We still haven’t had the opportunity to trim “the seven sisters” yet in Lewisburg, so if that tree belongs to you or you know the owners please tell them that we would love the chance to speak to them! Nothing brings us more joy than preserving one of these majestic trees that God has blessed us in this region with. This time of year is a great time to start thinking about trimming and pruning! Also, the time to start pruning your crape myrtles is almost upon us! #4 Lastly, is there anything else you wish to share with your customers? “Folks we are in this with you. I have kids of my own, and believe me, I suffer the same struggles you do. I get that money is tight, and I also get the importance of a fair deal and the necessity of a hard day’s work. We will do our best to do everything we say we will when we say we will and we promise above all to respect and value not only your property, but even more so, our new found friendship!
