WELCOME TO THE PRODUCERS Dear Friends, Welcome back to The Moonlight where we open our 39th summer season with the outrageously hilarious The Producers. After writing three previous Broadway plays, Mel Brooks hit it out of the park with The Producers, which he based on his hit 1968 film of the same name (which starred Zero Mostel and Gene Wilder). The show swept the Tony Awards after its Broadway opening in 2001 winning a record-breaking 12 awards, more than any other musical in history, including Hamilton. It beat out Hello, Steven Glaudini and Dolly! which, until The Producers came along, had held the Colleen Kollar Smith title of the most winningest musical with 10 Tony Awards.

The Producers went on to very successful and lengthy runs in London and in touring productions in the US and the UK. The seeds that eventually bore The Producers as a non-musical film were planted 57 years ago when, in 1962, Mel Brooks coined the phrase Springtime for Hitler as part of a joke at a press conference for one of his early Broadway shows. He came up with the idea of “two schnooks on Broadway who set out to produce a flop and swindle the backers” first as a novel, then decided to write a satirical play. It is a point of interest that Brooks used real-life people involved in Broadway as inspiration for his satire of the behind the scenes workings of theatre. In 1966, still undecided in which medium to place his originally titled concept Springtime for Hitler, Brooks, himself of Jewish descent, opted to create a film treatment of his work. Several producers and studios turned down Brooks’ idea of a film that satirized the leader of the Third Reich. Not until he met producer Sidney Glazier, himself raised in a Hebrew home as a youth, did Brooks’ newly titled screenplay The Producers come to life as a film (later to be placed in 11th position on AFI’s list of funniest movies).

At The Moonlight, we are so pleased to have Larry Raben helming The Producers. You may remember Larry’s uncanny take on the Gene Wilder character of Frederick Frankenstein in our 2013 production of Young Frankenstein (Mel Brooks’ second musical). In that, he was partnered with the brilliant Jamie Torcellini who turned in a hilarious performance as Igor. Larry’s connection to Mel Brooks and Susan Stroman (the musical’s original director and choreographer) runs deep after having played Leo Bloom on Broadway, and in the entire run of the Las Vegas production. You’ll experience Broadway quality performances with Larry recreating the original direction and reprising the role of Leo, and Karl Warden bringing Susan Stroman’s original choreography to life.

The Producers starts off the summer on a light note, to be followed by the San Diego Regional Premieres of Matilda The Musical and Victor/Victoria. NOTE FROM THE DIRECTOR My first experience with Mel Brooks was when I was a senior in high school and his movie History of the World, Part 1 came out. I had never laughed that hard at a movie and became an instant Mel Brooks fan. Of course, I then had to watch all of his movies. Young Frankenstein and Blazing Saddles both slayed me, and I fell in love with The Producers, the 1968 hit starring Zero Mostel and Gene Wilder. Currently ranked as #11 on the American Film Institute’s funniest American movies of all time, Mel’s story of a down and out Broadway producer who would do anything to make money was outrageously brilliant and an equal opportunity offender. I was struck that Mel had taken the horrific events of WWII (which had only transpired 20 years earlier) and demystified Adolph Hitler by presenting him as one of the biggest buffoons in history. The Springtime for Hitler segment is still one of the funniest sequences ever filmed. When I heard that Mel had written a Broadway musical version, I had to get tickets and see one of the first performances. I got a ticket in the last row of the upper balcony (all that was available) for a preview performance before the opening on Broadway. Not only did I laugh until I nearly fell out of seat, I also watched Matthew Broderick’s performance as Leo Bloom and thought at every turn, “THAT IS WHAT I DO.” I set it in my mind while sitting in my seat that night that I needed to play that role on that Broadway stage. Two years later, my dream came true! It was life changing to make my Broadway debut in The Producers and play Leo Bloom. Getting to work with the genius director/choreographer, Susan Stroman, and to work with my idol, Mel Brooks, in his masterpiece was an experience I will always cherish. The show still holds the record for the most Tony Awards ever…12! In revisiting the show and now directing it for my second time, I am once again struck by the clarity and hilarity of Stro’s original staging which we are honoring in this Moonlight production. Mel’s music, lyrics, and book are all fresh and funny as ever. The incredible Moonlight cast of comic actors, singers, and dancers have had a joyous and hilarious rehearsal process. We are so excited to welcome you to the wacky world of late 1950s New York in The Producers!

JOSH ADAMSON (Roger De Bris) is originally from Australia and started performing at the age of 13 in the starring role in Tom Sawyer. Josh moved to New York City to further his stage career and appeared in such shows as Hair, Blood and Fire, as well as the Broadway workshop of Taboo working with Rosie O’Donnell and Boy George. TV credits include Make It or Break It, Big Time Rush. TV movies include First Landing and The Clean-Up Woman. He’s also had leading and supporting roles in the feature films The Wedding Video, Unidentified, Look @ Me, Desert of Blood, Portal, and Painting in the Rain, working with directors such as Tim Miller (director of Deadpool).

His stage credits include Lovelace by the Go Go's, Aida, Annie, the U.S. national tours of The Clean Up Woman, the London theatre production of Peter Pan starring as Hook, Nick Arnstein, in the Ovation winning, Funny Girl. He has performed in multiple Pantos, starring alongside the Tony Award winning Ben Vereen, Shoshana Bean, Morgan Fairchild to name a few. In Sydney, Australia, he starred alongside the likes of Magda Szubanski. Josh is thrilled to be back at Moonlight where he first performed in Catch Me If You Can in the role of Carl Hanratty, He received a San Diego Theatre Critics Circle nomination for “Outstanding Lead Actor” for his portrayal of Edward Bloom in Moonlight's production of Big Fish. KATIE BARNA (Ulla) is delighted to be making her Moonlight Stage Productions debut! Favorite regional credits include Big Fish and Hello, Dolly! at Music Theatre Wichita, Nice Work If You Can Get It and Catch Me If You Can at Music Theatre West, and Will Rogers Follies at Lyric Theatre of Oklahoma. STEVEN GLAUDINI (Producing Artistic Director) It was twenty-three years ago that Steven made his Moonlight debut as Smee in Peter Pan. It has been a love affair with The Moonlight ever since.

Recent Moonlight credits have been Director of the recent hits: The Hunchback of Notre Dame, The Little Mermaid, Peter Pan, Big Fish, My Fair Lady, South Pacific, Sweeney Todd, Hairspray, Miss Saigon, Cats, Les Misérables (2008 San Diego Critics Award for Best Director), West Side Story, Cabaret, and Children of Eden. He thanks you for the support you give Moonlight Stage Productions…the theatre that started the career of his wife, actress Bets Malone. Steven credits The Moonlight with the start of his professional career which has led him to several positions, including: five years as Artistic Director/Producer at Musical Theatre West in Long Beach, CA. At MTW, Steven directed Monty Python’s Spamalot, Annie (starring Andrea McArdle), Little Shop of Horrors, Mel Brooks’ The Producers, the Regional Premiere of All Shook Up, The Pajama Game, The Pirates of Penzance (starring Rex Smith), The Full Monty, and five years as the Executive Director/Producer of Performance Riverside in Riverside, CA. KATHLEEN KENNA (Makeup Designer) most recently painted faces for San Diego Opera’s Carmen, Three Decembers, Rigoletto, and The Marriage of Figaro. She makes custom fitted beards for the various Santas at the San Diego Zoo, one hair at a time. She is excited to be a part of Moonlight’s summer season again this year. Thank you Steve and Colleen! CARLOTTA MALONE, ROSLYN LEHMAN, RENETTA LLOYD (Costume Coordination and Execution) are marking their eleventh summer season that the talents of these three women have combined to clothe the Moonlight Family. Roz has been involved for the past 23 years, Carlotta has been involved since the first season, 39 summers ago. Renetta joined the team 10 years ago when she returned to live in Vista. Recent Moonlight shows which have benefited under their combined expertise are Mamma Mia, The Hunchback of Notre Dame, Titanic, Big Fish, The Little Mermaid and Sunset Boulevard to name a few. Roz and Renetta have costumed shows at MiraCosta College, North Coast Rep, Oceanside Theater Company, Intrepid, San Diego Musical Theater, Scripps Ranch, The Welk, Cal State San Marcos, and Premiere Productions. Carlotta has worked at Coyote Stage Works, Musical Theater West, The Welk Resort, Starlight, and Performance Riverside. Carlotta was recently honored with a Lifetime Achievement Award by the Moonlight Angels. Earlier this year and at the end of last summer Roz and Renetta designed and built Chicago for the Moonlight, the stunning Pirates of Penzance at MiraCosta College, and have just finished designing Man of La Mancha at Oceanside Theatre Company. COLLEEN KOLLAR SMITH (Managing Director) is honored to serve as the Managing Director for Moonlight Stage Productions. A native Vistan, she first performed at The Moonlight in the youth production of Cinderella, and over time became co-director for the same program. A graduate of USD’s Nonprofit Leadership and Management Master’s Program, Colleen has worked as the Executive Director of San Diego Musical Theatre and Director of Development for Lamb’s Players Theatre. While at Lamb’s, Colleen was also a member of the resident ensemble where she performed in/choreographed dozens of productions, co-created the long-running musical Mixtape, and orchestrated the Guinness World Record breaking event and fundraiser 100 Hours of Stories. She and her husband, Lance, are thrilled to watch their own kids, Scottie and Pepper make their memories at the Moonlight.

KARL WARDEN (Choreographer) is proudly staging Susan Stroman's Tony Award winning choreography! Recent TV work includes choreographing the promos for American Horror Story: CULT (winning top honors at the BDA Awards), Fosse/Verdon, American Crime Story: Versace, and Legion. Upcoming: The Addams Family at the Welk and West Side Story at 5-Star Theatricals.

ABOUT THE MOONLIGHT

Forty years ago, Kathy Brombacher stood on what was then a concrete stage with officials from the City of Vista and the Vista Unified School District. With no electricity, running water, or bathrooms, Brombacher proclaimed that the small stage and grassy tiers could be home to musical theatre during the summer. The “Vista Summer Theatre Festival� was born and from 1981 through 1983, the city and the school district jointly produced the shows. In 1984, the festival was brought under the umbrella of the city and the theatre was renamed the Moonlight Amphitheatre.

For 31 years, until her retirement on December 31, 2012, Brombacher led the development of what is now known as Moonlight Stage Productions as Producing Artistic Director. Today, Moonlight Stage Productions is recognized as one of San Diego County's major theatres, critically acclaimed for its Broadway-quality musicals. Led by Producing Artistic Director Steven Glaudini and Managing Director Colleen Kollar Smith, The Moonlight is experiencing an exciting period of audience growth and artistic vigor. Combined with Glaudini's artistic direction and buoyed by the reconstruction of the Moonlight Amphitheatre in 2008/09 with a state-of-the-art stage house, The Moonlight welcomes its audiences to experience Broadway's Best Under the Stars. In the fall of 2014, Moonlight Presents was inaugurated in order to present performing arts events year-round outside of the summer. Managing Director Colleen Kollar Smith curates the programming which has seen a 40% increase in attendance under her guidance.

For 25 years, Moonlight Youth Theatre has provided awardwinning theatrical training to the North County Community.

MYT offers programs designed for youth from age 7 to 18 of various skill levels who are interested in all areas of theatrical performance. We also have a dynamic internship program for those who wish to remain “behind the scenes”. We are committed to providing an education in theatre that encourages teamwork and leadership skills and fosters the development of confidence, creativity, and consideration for others in the context of a professional environment. Educational opportunities are staffed by professional actors, directors, choreographers, musical directors, and technical professionals.
