New Replacement Ambulances Added to Fire’s Fleet Two new ambulances have been added to the Vista Fire Department’s emergency services fleet. The Advanced Life Support (ALS) vehicles are able to transport patients needing a higher level of care during the ride to the hospital. The newer models replace two older ALS versions with high usage, and will be used in continuing to provide emergency care and transportation services to the Vista community. Each of the City’s ambulances are ALS vehicles. In addition, all of the department’s fire engines responding to a call before the ambulance, are also staffed with an ALS first responder and carrying the same equipment as the ALS ambulances, such as defibrillators, heart monitors, and life-saving medications. This equipment is used to administer the appropriate care needed for stabilizing a patient with advanced life support needs. “The new additions to the fleet demonstrates the City is committedto high priority service to Vista residents and the Vista Fire Protection District,” said Fire Chief Jeff Hahn. “All of our firefighters are cross-trained as paramedics, and this multi-role firefighter/paramedic helps the Fire Department deliver the highest level of EMS delivery, the most efficient use of resources, and, most importantly, the highest quality of service to the public.” Approximately 80 percent of the Fire Department’s service calls are for medical assistance. i

Raised Medians Create Safer Driving The grant funded Safety Improvement Project has been completed on E. Vista Way from Civic Center Drive to Williamston Street. The recently installed medians will eliminate left-turn vehicle collisions, making this section of road safer for motorists as vehicles travel along the corridor.

Street Improvements = Smoother Drive The City is investing $1.5 million in making sure Vista residents have a safe and smooth drive and that the city roads are well-maintained. It is part of the City of Vista’s commitment to keeping the city streets in a safe and functional condition for motorists During the next 30 to 60 days, 21 miles of mainly local streets will be slurry sealed throughout Vista. Streets are selected using the City’s Pavement Management System. The improvement project, funded with SB1 gas taxes, includes pavement maintenance work such as crack seal, slurry seal, and double slurry seal treatments. Next year, the biennial street rehabilitation project, i.e. street reconstruction and overlay, will take place, thus ensuring road maintenance is done regularly to keep the roads in good condition. !

Be Fire Safe As You Deck the Halls The top three days of the year for home candle fires are Christmas Day, New Year’s Eve and New Year's Day. As you deck the halls this holiday season, be fire smart. A small fire that spreads to a Christmas tree can grow large very quickly and these are more likely to be serious. Carefully decorating your home can help make your holidays safer. • Only use decorations that are flame-retardant or not flammable. • Check holiday lights each year for frayed wires or excessive wear. • Don’t link more than three strands of holiday lights. • Never leave a burning candle unattended. Consider using battery-operated flameless candles. • Keep your live Christmas tree away from heat sources and room exits. • Water your live Christmas tree daily to keep it from becoming dry.

Christmas Tree Recycling Curbside Recycling EDCO customers may place Christmas trees curbside on their regular collection day beginning Wednesday, December 26 through January 12 at no extra charge. All trees must be cut to four feet or less in length when placed curbside. Trimmings, including tinsel and the stand, must be removed. Organic decorations, such as natural garland and wreaths, can also be placed in the residential designated yard waste container, as well as any Christmas trees on and after January 13. Trees placed inside the yard waste containers must be cut to fit into the yard waste cart with no trees sticking up or out of the yard waste cart. i

Drop Off Tree Locations December 26 through January 7 • Public parking lot between S. Santa Fe Avenue and Mercantile Street (523 S. Santa Fe Avenue) • Parking lot on the corner of S. Melrose & Shadowridge Drives

Overall Crime Decreases in Vista Public safety is a top priority for the City of Vista, and the Vista Sheriff’s Department works hard to keep the community safe by addressing crime, responding to life and property emergencies, and preparing for disasters. According to SANDAG’s recently published 2018 Mid-Year Crime Bulletin (Jan-June), the overall crime rate in the City of Vista is five percent lower than mid-year 2017; violent crime is down 18 percent; and property crime is down two percent. The annualized FBI Index Violent Crime rates per 1,000 population in Vista experienced a 21 percent decrease between 2014 and 2018 and an 18 percent decrease between 2017 and 2018. In working to keep this downward trend in the crime rate, the City Council recently approved an additional Sheriff’s deputy to help patrol the city. Vista Sheriff deputies have been focusing on analyzing data, tracking crime patterns and anticipating areas where crime may occur. This intelligence-led policing strategy effort has been key in reducing the crime rate in Vista. A link to the complete mid-year crime bulletin is on the City website at CityofVista.com.

Ask the City

What can be done about the litter in the city? A clean city improves our community appearance and quality of life. Litter discarded in streets and parks can travel through the storm water system to our waterways, where it can cause harm to wildlife. Following are tips to help keep Vista clean and litter-free. • Keep a litterbag in your car. Empty it into a trash container. • Don’t throw litter out car windows. • Secure items and remove loose items that can fly out of the back of truck beds. • Keep yards clean and free of anything that can blow into the street. • Make sure garbage/recycling bags are securely tied, so that loose items can’t fall out. • Close the lid on your refuse/recycling containers after depositing materials inside. • Don’t overfill refuse containers. Exposed garbage will likely result in litter in the street. • Remove flyers promptly from your front door before they are blown into the neighborhood. • Pick up after your dog as you walk the neighborhood. Place the pet waste in trash receptacles and not recycling bins. • Report litter using the City’s mobile app, “Access Vista”, or call the Report a Problem hotline, or report it online. • Report litter on Highway 78 (and under the bridges) online to CALTRANS at CSR.Dot.Ca.Gov.

Reporting Litter Community parks and trails are an important part of the Vista community. Visitors hiking along the Buena Vista trailheads are seeing new signs reminding everyone to do their part in keeping the trail clean. Let’s all Pack It In and Pack It Out.

• Download the mobile app “Access Vista”, snap a photo, and report it. • Call the Report a Problem hotline at 760.639.6177. • Use the Report a Problem request online at CityofVista.com/ReportAProblem. • Report litter on Highway 78 to CALTRANS online at CSR.Dot.Ca.Gov. C I TY NEW S | 7
