DIRECTOR’S NOTES

On July 13, 2001, MGM Studios released the film adaptation of Amanda Brown’s novel Legally Blonde onto the big screen nationwide to overwhelming box office success. $20.4 Million to be exact on its first weekend (Universal Studio execs, who passed on the screenplay must have been kicking themselves) The film starred Reese Witherspoon who’s performance as Elle Woods earned her and the picture a Golden Globe nomination, an MTV Movie Award for Best Leading Actress in a comedic role as well as the Teen Choice Awards for best actress that year.

Elle Woods was born, and Reese Witherspoon’s lovable endearing smile and passion for pink will forever put a smile on our faces. Incidentally, Charlize Theron, Gwyneth Paltrow, Alicia Silverstone, Katherine Heigl, Christina Applegate, Milla Jovovich, and Jennifer Love Hewitt were all considered for Elle Woods. (Could you imagine?) It’s no wonder the youth of America fell in love with this new Barbie of the Millenia. She is a complete retreat from the dumb blonde stereotype made by the iconic Marilyn Monroe in Gentleman Prefer Blondes. Elle Woods’ vibrant blonde’s voice empowered a generation of females, and gave them permission to not only be smart and beautiful, but equals to their male counterparts. Girl Power equaled brain power.

Notably, just two months after America was cheering Elle Woods victory, America wept and was torn apart by the attacks and collapse of the Twin Towers on September 11, 2001. These terrorists did their best to break the smiles of that generation. Our country went into disbelief, anger, grief, mourning, and depression. In the month and years following, I probably rented the Legally Blonde VHS on my Blockbuster video card (teachable moment: parent’s explain what these are to your kids) more than a dozen times. Elle Woods comedic character became remedy to laugh, a beacon of hope, and a means to cope with this tragedy for me and her undying will to follow her heart for love wherever that may lead is a message I believe everyone needs to be reminded of every single day.

All good musicals are based on this premise of love conquers all, so I guess I shouldn’t have been surprised that in February 2007, a Broadway adaptation premiered at the Palace Theatre starring Laura Bell Bundy in the role of Elle Woods, that earned her a 2008 Tony Award nomination. The Broadway show capitalized on the MTV generation, as did the film, and spun off into an MTV reality-TV series called Legally Blonde: The Musical - The Search for Elle Woods. South Carolina blonde winner, Bailey Hanks from Anderson took over the role on Broadway. Legally Blonde: The Musical later went on to live a three year run across the pond at the Savoy Theatre on the West End in the version of the production that we bring to you tonight.

When Mike Bradford ask me to direct and choreograph this production, I was ecstatic to have the opportunity to be able to take those fond memories of the movie, inject them into the musical version and share them with a new generation of kids that are just discovering it. In a world where cyberspace often outplays reality and instant gratification becomes the norm, it’s refreshing to teach young people about the importance of hard work, perseverance, patience, ethics, and moral conduct. I want us all to see past the book cover to the beauty of what is inside and claim that individuality! This is the universal truth that I want the youth to leave with. There’s no need to fit in, YOU ARE ENOUGH. With Halloween just around the corner, I’m sure this year Gal Godot’s Wonder Woman will be a top seller for girls and some boys to show and express their power. Since 2001, girls and some boys continue to dressed up to showcase Reese Witherspoon’s Elle Woods blonde and pink power! Just a thought…perhaps just go out dressed up as your best self. YOU ARE ENOUGH! Please note, no children, babies, or small animals were harmed in this production.

EVAN D’ANGELES (Director/Choreographer) Evan is a master of talent recipient in choreography from Chapman University where he received the Best Choreographer Award for his contemporary piece “Oh, Father” on domestic violence. Most recently he directed and choreographed SONGS FOR A NEW WORLD at the Old Town Temecula Theatre where he also serves as the Casting Director for The Barn Stage Company (Spring Awakening, Urinetown, Chess, Carousel, Camelot, James & The Giant Peach). He has Co-Directed and Choregraphed two productions of Spring Awakening and RENT. Other creative credits include choreographer for the west coast premiere of Magdalene - a new musical. In addition, he has used his skills as a director/choreographer/actor to raise over $50,000 for Katrina Relief producing a Broadway Benefit Concert, SONGS FOR A NEW ORLEANS at Three Trees Theatre in Costa Mesa, and assistant choreographer for Walt Disney Creative Entertainment Special Events. CHELSEA NICOLE LAPP (Associate Choreographer) Chelsea is an award-winning choreographer whose work has been seen all over Southern California as well as Illinois, Washington, Idaho and New York. She is an alumnus of the Pulse Teacher Workshop and the Stage Door Connections Workshop with Andy Blankenbuehler in NYC. While not working on a show, Chelsea is the Director of The Barn Stage Company Conservatory in Temecula. A huge thank you to Evan for bringing her onto such a fun project! MARIEL ALEXANDER (Delta Nu) is sixteen-years-old and a junior at Torrey Pines High School. This is her first play with MYT. AQUILA EWALD (Serena) is a 14-year-old 9th grader at Carlsbad High School. This will be her 21st production and 3rd with MYT.
