NOTE FROM THE DIRECTOR In 1836, all Hans Christian Andersen had to his name were poorly received fairy tales and unrequited loves. Although critics discouraged him from writing more fairy tales, by 1837 he had channeled his unrequited feelings into The Little Mermaid. Andersen‘s story follows a mermaid who sacrifices her voice to earn an immortal soul through the love of a human Prince. As in Andersen’s life, though, the mermaid fails to win her Prince’s love. When the Prince marries another woman, the mermaid must kill him to return to the sea. Since she cannot, she dissolves into sea-foam. Andersen wrote, “It was the only one of my works that has affected me while I was writing it.” After his initial draft, he softened the tragedy for his mermaid. She earns her immortal soul as an air spirit, and through the story, Andersen earned his immortal fame. In the 1930s, Walt Disney considered The Little Mermaid, but chose The Ugly Duckling instead. It wasn’t for fifty years that directors Ron Clements and John Musker brought The Little Mermaid back to the table in their search for a relatable Princess. With Alan Menken and Howard Ashman, the songwriters behind the stage hit Little Shop of Horrors, they created a Broadway-style musical with a new ending and emphasis on Ariel’s thirst for adventure. Its quick establishment as a classic heralded the Renaissance of Disney’s animated fairy tales, and set Disney on the path to theatrical production. From 1994’s Beauty and the Beast through The Lion King, Tarzan, The Little Mermaid, and Aladdin, adaptations of animated films have pushed the boundaries of the medium to immerse us in something enchanting and purely theatrical. The structure of The Little Mermaid leant itself to the stage, where it could make audiences “part of [its] world.” Because the story calls for underwater motion and characters of many species, it provides exciting creative challenges for its artists. Theatre gave The Little Mermaid room to grow, adding eleven new songs and expanding the backstories and relationships of many characters, including Ursula, King Triton, Prince Eric, and Flounder. In this production, we invite you to dive into your imagination, experiencing both the magic and the means that make it possible. For all its expansion and new theatricality, The Little Mermaid is the same story that has captivated readers, artists, and audiences since 1837. It illuminates a magical underwater kingdom, but simultaneously puts us in the flippers of a young mermaid who finds it dull. As Sebastian warns, “The seaweed is always greener in somebody else’s lake…” Many of us marvel at the things Ariel considers commonplace: coral castles, singing sea creatures, even her tail…and yet, she longs for our everyday activities: walking, jumping, dancing, feeling earth beneath her feet. Hans Christian Andersen wrote, “The whole world is a series of miracles, but we’re so used to them we call them ordinary things.” In Moonlight’s production of Disney’s The Little Mermaid, we hope to capture the wonder in both the ordinary and the extraordinary. Enjoy your night under the Stars…and “Under the Sea”! Steven Glaudini Director

WHO’S WHO BEHIND THE SCENES JEAN-YVES TESSIER (Lighting Designer) is a primate with a single opposable thumb. He hails from the cold reaches of Canada and once had a sexy French accent. He has since lost it. If found please take good care of it. Selected credits include: Dan Castellaneta’s For Piano And Harpo, Cirque Musica: Crescendo at the Hollywood Bowl. 3D Theatricals: Ragtime (2015 Ovation Award Nominee), Sideshow, Parade (2013 Ovation Award Nominee). Crystal Cruises: Maestro. McCoy-Rigby Entertainment: Ring of Fire (2012 Ovation Award Nominee), Boeing Boeing. A Noise Within: Antigone, Arcadia. DOMA: American Idiot, Young Frankenstein (2015 Ovation Award Nominee). CARLOTTA MALONE, ROSLYN LEHMAN, RENETTA LLOYD (Costume Coordination, Additional Design, and Execution) are marking their ninth summer of combined experience to clothe the Moonlight Family. Roz has been involved for the past 21 years, and Carlotta has been involved since the first season, 37 summers ago. Renetta joined the team eight years ago when she returned to live in Vista. Recent Moonlight shows which have benefited under their combined expertise are Peter Pan, Titanic, Shrek, Big Fish, My Fair Lady, Wizard of Oz and Aida, to name a few. Roz and Renetta have costumed shows at MiraCosta College Theatre, North Coast Rep, Oceanside Theater Company, Intrepid, San Diego Musical Theater, Scripps Ranch, The Welk, and Premiere Productions. Carlotta has worked at Coyote Stage Works, Musical Theater West, The Welk Resort, Starlight, and Performance Riverside. Through the generosity of the Moonlight, many of their costumes have been shared with neighboring theaters. Recently Roz and Renetta built an original classical wardrobe for A Midsummer Night's Dream for Cal State San Marcos. Renetta's designs can be found on nattyloucreations.com. In this production, the costume for Ursula, the Sea Witch, was imagined, designed and built by Renetta. KATHLEEN KENNA (Make-Up Design) is so happy to return to her happy place at the Moonlight Amphitheatre where she gets to play “under the sea” with this company. A few of her favorite Moonlight shows as make-up designer are Cats, Shrek: The Musical, The Addams Family, Mary Poppins, Young Frankenstein, and of course Sweeney Todd. PETER HERMAN (Wig Designer) has designed wigs for over thirty productions at Moonlight Stage Productions since 2002. Peter has designed wigs all over the Southern California area, including The Old Globe Theatre, The La Jolla Playhouse, The San Diego REP, as well as some design work for film, television, and various theme parks. Peter currently teaches wig and makeup design at San Diego State University.

NOTES FROM “THE HILL” HISTORY OF THE MOONLIGHT You are about to experience an incredible summertime tradition of musical theatre that extends back 37 years when the Moonlight was originally founded as the Vista Summer Theatre Festival by Kathy Brombacher (feted with the “Bravo, Kathy” entranceway sculpture) with two shows: Oliver! and The Boyfriend. For its early seasons, the productions were a joint program between the City of Vista and the Vista Unified School District. To appreciate the full history of the amphitheatre, one must travel back further to 1974 when the Vista Foundation was formed to create a bicentennial project that would be a gift to the citizens of Vista. That gift would be the original amphitheatre stage, which existed in many forms for the Moonlight’s first 28 years. The new stage house and improved amphitheatre amenities debuted in 2009 with support from Vista voters, who passed a bond to support the construction and renovation, and the Moonlight Cultural Foundation which underwrote the sound and lighting equipment. The San Diego Theatre Critics Circle among others have recognized Moonlight Stage Productions’ work with numerous awards. Today, the Moonlight is overseen by Producing Artistic Director Steven Glaudini and Managing Director Colleen Kollar Smith. The Moonlight Amphitheatre offers year-round programming making it a popular entertainment destination that has welcome more than 1-million visitors. ARTISAN CAFÉ SERVES UP PRE-SHOW DINING One of the hallmarks of attending a show at the Moonlight is creating your own experience. You can bring your own picnic supper into the theatre, or enjoy a casual dining experience at the Artisan Café. Located near the North Entrance, the Café offers a three course menu which can be enjoyed starting at 6 pm on show nights. View the menu at moonlightstage.com and make reservations by calling 760.828.0596. EXTEND YOUR MOONLIGHT EXPERIENCE The shows don't end when summer is over at the Moonlight Amphitheatre. Year-round, we offer entertainment including concerts and an indoor cabaret season. Three events from Moonlight Presents are offered this fall (see page four), and next month we’ll announce our 2018 cabaret series. Visit moonlightpresents.com for information. PLAYING ON THE HILL Veterans of Moonlight productions from long ago often referred to the amphitheatre as “the hill.” That name could have been earned because to access the theatre in the early days, one had to literally drive up a hill. Access was via dirt roads with the hillside lined with temporary fencing to separate the rustic backstage area from the audience. It is true that actors would hang their costumes in trees. While those trees have since been replaced, the spirit of bringing great musical theatre to “the hill” has not changed. 20
