WELCOME TO THE HUNCHBACK OF NOTRE DAME! Dear Friends, Welcome to the third show of Moonlight Stage Productions’ 38th Summer Season, The Hunchback of Notre Dame. We are proud to produce another outstanding musical first developed at the La Jolla Playhouse (the first was our 2013 production of The Who’s Tommy). One of the most creative and inventive elements of the La Jolla production was the incorporation of a full choir visible onstage. Combined with a lush score, the vocal and instrumental orchestrations make for one of the most powerful and dramatic musical experiences you will hear Steven Glaudini and on stage. Bringing these musical elements together on Colleen Kollar Smith our stage is our own maestra, Elan McMahan. Elan has just come from serving as the musical director of the Old Globe’s US premiere production of The Lorax. We couldn’t think of a better musician and artist to lead Hunchback from our orchestra pit. For 54 musicals at the Moonlight, Elan has been driven to give each show its own distinct soundscape and Hunchback is no exception. No wonder her work is praised repeatedly by critics and with awards by the San Diego Theatre Critics Circle. Working in tandem to bring the score to life is our technical team led by Sound Designer Jim Zadai. Together, Elan and Jim, and the rest of the sound team, deliver an outstanding artistic and technical collaboration. With the founding of the Moonlight 38 years ago, it was Kathy Brombacher’s original vision to feature full orchestral forces for each show. That tradition continues today. There are nearly 60 artists – cast, choir, orchestra – bringing this sophisticated work to life. We are sure that you will be as moved by the music – and the story – as we have been in bringing it to our stage. Our final show of the Summer Season, the Moonlight Premiere of Chicago, also features a terrific American musical score by Kander and Ebb that pays homage to 1920s jazz. It will be conducted by Kenneth Gammie, who has been associated with music at the Moonlight for 38 years. Ken will be joined by Co-Directors James Vasquez and Terra C. MacLeod, Choreographer Corey Wright, and Musical Director JD Dumas. Don’t forget that entertainment goes on at the Moonlight Amphitheatre this fall and winter. We have some exciting concerts and family events lined-up for you, starting with Moonlight Youth Theatre’s production of Disney’s Beauty and the Beast (which we look forward to directing and choreographing!). The MYT experience is a great opportunity to share theatre with young people in your life. See pages 4 and 5 of your program for our line-up.

NOTE FROM THE DIRECTOR 1482. Paris, France. Quasimodo, a deformed bell ringer in a cold, cathedral tower discovers his inner strength. A conflicted priest, Frollo, battles the specter of damnation. Phoebus, a dashing soldier shuns duty to pursue Esmeralda, a beautiful Gypsy dancer. At every turn, a malevolent force propels each of them toward their own fate. This musical retelling of the beloved medieval love story features a lush score by Alan Menken (Disney’s The Little Mermaid, Beauty and the Beast, Newsies) and lyrics by Stephen Schwartz (Wicked, Pippin, Children of Eden) — the only stage collaboration between the two giants of the American musical theatre. The Hunchback of Notre Dame is a musical based on the 1831 novel of the same name written by Victor Hugo with songs from the 1996 Walt Disney Animation Studios film adaptation. The musical premiered in 1999 in Berlin, Germany as Der Glöckner von Notre Dame ("The Bellringer of Notre Dame"). It was produced by Walt Disney Theatrical, the company's first musical to premiere outside the U.S. It ran for three years, becoming one of Berlin's longest-running musicals. sThe English-language musical, The Hunchback of Notre Dame, had its debut at La Jolla Playhouse on October 28, 2014 and ran until December 7, 2014. Subsequently, the show went on to open on March 4, 2015 at the Paper Mill Playhouse in Millburn, New Jersey. The show closed on April 5, 2015, after it was announced that it would not move to Broadway. At its heart, The Hunchback of Notre Dame is a story of faith: a faith in something bigger than us, and the faith that we are something bigger. When the fire of our life burns away the given circumstances of socio-economic status, ethnicity, gender, creed, ability and hardship, we are just people…people who long for love, acceptance, and wholeness. I can’t think of a better hope-filled story to pierce through the darkness that we sometimes encounter in life to remind us of that truth. Enjoy your night under the stars!
