WELCOME TO THE MOONLIGHT! Dear Friends, We welcome you to the third show of our 37th Season, Andrew Lloyd Webber’s masterpiece Sunset Boulevard. Moonlight Stage Productions is dedicated to bringing you theatre experiences you will not find elsewhere: Broadway and National tour sets and costumes, top professional actors, directors and other creative staff, and full orchestras. At the same time, we strive to turn your experience under the stars into a memory. We know a little something about making memories at the Moonlight. Combined, the two of us have 57 years of history in this theatre – and we’re not the only ones. Many of our patrons have been with the Moonlight since the beginning and have introduced their children and grandchildren to the magic of the theatre. We are proud to serve generations of families and welcome new patrons annually.

NOTE FROM THE DIRECTOR In my early twenties, I was a young actor living and studying in New York City. Like most transplants to the venerable city from the Midwest, I was desperate to strip away my sunny, corn-fed upbringing and find my inner angst. I studied the film performances of a young Marlon Brando and William Holden and got lost in the movie genre of film noir. I happened upon Billy Wilder’s Academy Award winning film, Sunset Boulevard. This 1950 film about unrealized dreams was both darkly comic and wonderfully tragic. A true film masterpiece about the grittier underbelly of Hollywood and the machinery that creates stars and then forgets them. I was living in London in 1993 when Andrew Lloyd Webber, Don Black, and Christopher Hampton’s musical adaptation of Sunset Boulevard opened on the West End starring the amazing Patti LuPone as faded star Norma Desmond. Her performance was fearless and Webber’s sweeping and evocative score premiered a collection of amazing songs, many of which have become musical theatre classics. Thanks to producer Steven Glaudini, we are presenting the show tonight with the full Broadway orchestrations and cast size. I’m thrilled to bring this story of love and loss to the Moonlight stage. Eric Marchese of the Orange County Register said, “Valerie Perri delivers a knockout performance as Dolly. Proving a worthy successor to past stars, she’s part Channing, part Streisand, part Fanny Brice and 100 percent Dolly.” Valerie’s career began under the direction of legendary Director/ Producer Harold Prince when he chose her to play Eva Peron in the Broadway National of Evita. She has also had the honor of working with esteemed Director/ Choreographer Jerome Robbins in the Broadway National of Jerome Robbins’ Broadway. She starred as Norma Desmond in the hit musical Sunset Boulevard at The Karen and Richard Carpenter Center which garnered her a best actress nomination from Broadway World and also a Los Angeles Stage Scene Award for Best Performance of the Year 2013. She is a recipient of the John Raitt Award for best Cabaret Performance 2014. She has sung for concert hall audiences worldwide, from Disney Hall to Carnegie Hall and internationally at the Opera House in Frankfort and the London Palladium. Roz and Renetta have costumed shows at MiraCosta College Theatre, North Coast Repertory Theatre, Oceanside Theater Company, Intrepid Theatre, San Diego Musical Theater, Scripps Ranch Theatre, The Welk Theatre, and Premiere Productions. Carlotta has worked at Coyote Stage Works, Musical Theater West, The Welk Theatre, Starlight, and Performance Riverside. Through the generosity of the Moonlight, many of their costumes have been shared with neighboring theaters. WHO’S WHO BEHIND THE SCENES STEVEN GLAUDINI (Producing Artistic Director) It was twentyone years ago that Steven made his Moonlight debut as Smee in Peter Pan and it has been a love affair ever since. Moonlight credits include Director of the recent hits: The Little Mermaid, Peter Pan, Big Fish, My Fair Lady, South Pacific, Sweeney Todd, Hairspray, Miss Saigon, Cats, Les Misérables (2008 San Diego Critics Award for Best Director), West Side Story, Cabaret, and Children of Eden. He appreciates all of the support you give Moonlight Stage Productions…the theatre that started the career of his wife, actress Bets Malone. Steven credits the Moonlight with the start of his professional career, which has led him to several positions including: Five years as Artistic Director/Producer at Musical Theatre West in Long Beach, CA. and five years as the Executive Director/Producer of Performance Riverside in Riverside, CA. At MTW, Steve has directed Monty Python’s Spamalot, Annie (starring Andrea McArdle), Little Shop of Horrors, Mel Brooks’ The Producers, Regional Premiere of All Shook Up, The Pajama Game, The Pirates of Penzance (starring Rex Smith), and The Full Monty. Steven was recently honored by the San Diego Theatre Critics Circle with the Craig Noel Award for Producer of the Year of 2014. COLLEEN KOLLAR SMITH (Managing Director) is honored to serve as the Managing Director for Moonlight Stage Productions. A native Vistan, she first performed here in the youth production of Cinderella, and over time became co-director for the same program. A graduate of USD’s Nonprofit Leadership and Management Master’s Program, Colleen has worked as the Executive Director of San Diego Musical Theatre and Director of Development for Lamb’s Players Theatre. While at Lamb’s, Colleen was also a member of the resident ensemble where she performed in/choreographed dozens of productions, co-created the long-running musical Mixtape, and orchestrated the Guinness World Record breaking event and fundraiser 100 Hours of Stories. She and her husband, Lance, are thrilled to watch her own kids, Scottie and Pepper make their memories at the Moonlight. JUSTIN A.M.M. HALL (Technical Director) is a Theatre Arts graduate from the University of Arizona. He has worked with Arizona Opera, Arizona Theatre Company, and Upstairs Theatre Company. Locally, Justin has designed for Moonlight at the AVO, New Village Arts, La Jolla Stage Company, and Carlsbad Community Theatre. Justin has worked with Moonlight Stage Productions since 2003.

SALUTING MOONLIGHT’S ORIGINAL ‘MUSIC MAN,’ KENNETH GAMMIE by Marcia Manna

It's helpful to think of Kenneth Gammies’ journey in terms of then and now.

Then goes back to 1981, when Moonlight's founder and former artistic director Kathy Brombacher solicited his help in producing musical theater on a slab of cement in Brengle Terrace Park, illuminated with lights draped over telephone poles. At the time, Brombacher and Gammie were Vista High School teachers and during the next decade, Gammie taught band during the school year and spent every summer conducting Moonlight’s musicals, engaging his high school students to play in the orchestra.

As a founding member of Moonlight Stage Productions, he was engaged in developments that included the 2009 completion of Moonlight Amphitheatre’s $14 million transformation into a state-of-the-art stage house. Gammie went from using amateur players to standing front and center in an orchestra pit, conducting two dozen professional musicians. "I never imagined it would evolve like this," Gammie says.

"The technology and space is amazing. It's very special to be involved with this organization."

Now retired from Vista Unified School District after 42 years, with more than 60 summer musicals to his credit, Gammie uses two important tools, a conducting baton “for precision” and a programmable electronic metronome that helps to measure the run time of every show within one minute. These days, Gammie is focused on “directing a group of musicians to be uniform in their ability to find phrasing and balance and dynamics.”

For this season, Gammie is mastering the 1,100 page score for the musical version of the Academy Award-winning film "Sunset Boulevard," with all of its “many layers of emotion, style and time changes.” "I have to know Andrew Lloyd Webber's score really, really well,” Gammie says.

“‘Sunset Boulevard” is more like an opera; there are very few scenes played without music and the timing is even more critical. You have to develop a level of consistency in terms of pacing and dialogue.”’’ Given the scope of his long career, Gammie is often asked to name his preferences“Shrek,” perhaps, or “Mary Poppins” or “Into the Woods.” Intent on continuing the vision of Moonlight Stage Productions, Gammie points his baton toward the future.

“Just the other day, someone asked about my favorite musical and I said, ‘The next one I do is going to be my favorite. I love the process of putting it together and making it fit. It's extremely rewarding as a musician to work with artistic staff and musicians at this level.” 19

This year the Moonlight Angels Auxiliary celebrates their 25th Anniversary! Since 1992, Moonlight Angels Auxiliary’s mission is to promote and assist Moonlight Cultural Foundation’s fundraising efforts in support of Moonlight Stage Productions’ quality programming at the Moonlight Amphitheatre. Members are offered various volunteer opportunities, special events, and fundraising activities. The Angels have provided funds and supported many projects at Moonlight via the efforts of wonderful volunteers. This year the Angels have been awarded the Moonlight Award of Excellence which honors an individual or individuals whose exceptional record of service and giving are an inspiration to others and demonstrates through sterling example a deep passion for Moonlight’s theatrical legacy. For almost 25 years, Moonlight Youth Theatre has provided award-winning theatrical training to the North County Community. MYT offers programs designed for youth from age 7 to 18 of various skill levels who are interested in all areas of theatrical performance. We also have a dynamic program for those who wish to remain “behind the scenes.” We are committed to providing an education in theatre that encourages teamwork and leadership skills and fosters the development of confidence, creativity, and consideration for others in the context of a professional theatre environment. Equal parts hilarious and heart-warming, this musical is so much fun, it should be illegal! Based on the Reese Witherspoon film, Legally Blonde the Musical earned seven Tony nominations and ten Drama Desk Award nominations during its Broadway run.
