WELCOME TO MATILDA THE MUSICAL
Steven Glaudini and Colleen Kollar Smith
Welcome to the second show of our 39th summer season, Roald Dahl’s Matilda The Musical. We are thrilled to present this musical that resonates with audiences throughout the world with its message of empowerment and overcoming obstacles. Matilda had its world premiere at the Royal Shakespeare Company in England in the fall of 2010. That production is still running today. Matilda came to Broadway from 2013 through January 1, 2017. It then toured the US until recently and you are now experiencing the San Diego Regional Premiere production at The Moonlight.
Matilda sprang from the mind of British author Roald Dahl (1916 -1990) in 1988 and is considered one of the most popular children’s books of all time. Similar to Dahl’s style of writing throughout all of his published works, Matilda features a child who is subjected to bullying by authority figures (her parents and her headmistress), but finds comfort by at least one adult (her teacher), and a community of young people. Like other creative figures, Dahl reflected his own childhood experiences in his works. The headmaster at his London boarding school, once roared at Dahl, “I always knew you were a liar! And a cheat as well!” Dahl would never forget the hazing he experienced and witnessed as a student. Those memories were major influences throughout his literary output. While characters like Harry Potter, Percy Jackson, and Charlie from Dahl’s Charlie and the Chocolate Factory share similar hero’s journeys with Matilda, she stands out as a heroine with whom girls can also identify. She teaches everyone that what makes each individual unique can be their very own super power and that by staying true to oneself, with tenacity, intelligence, and knowledge, they will not only be successful themselves, but will inspire, impact, and change those around them. Matilda presents to all children the message that they can be successful no matter what life challenges are thrown their way. We celebrate such empowerment at The Moonlight and we are immensely proud of the achievements the younger members of our company have earned. Each one of them is following their dreams, which has led them to our stage. We also applaud and appreciate the parents and teachers who are at their side guiding them along the way. The Moonlight experience is two-fold. We are a place for the community to gather. We also strive to provide a program that nurtures and fosters the dreams of those who work on our stage and behind the scenes. We hope that you will be inspired by the lessons taught in Matilda. “Even if you’re little, you can do a lot.” Sincerely, Steven Glaudini Producing Artistic Director

NOTE FROM THE DIRECTOR Published in 1988, Matilda is about an extraordinarily bright little girl who discovers she has remarkable powers. The daughter of abusive parents, and the target of a cruel and tyrannical headmistress, she finds comfort and companionship in her teacher, Miss Honey, and refuge between the covers of her books. In this story, Roald Dahl takes the common idea that adults are wiser and more rational than children and flips it on its head. As is true in most children's stories, the heroine of this book is a child, a young girl who is much smarter and kinder than most of the adults around her, sending an important message about the innocence and uniqueness of childhood. Matilda’s bravery teaches Miss Honey and her classmates an important lesson – that even though life can be hard and unfair, “nobody but me is gonna change my story,” so “sometimes you have to be a little bit naughty.” These days, bullying is, unfortunately, not an uncommon occurrence. And some say it is more visible now. But if you’ve ever hoped you would be the brave one to stand up against it, Matilda just might give you the courage to do what’s right. We could all use a hero, and in this case, a clever heroine. Jamie Torcellini, Director

She makes custom fitted beards for the various Santas at the San Diego Zoo, one hair at a time. She is excited to be a part of Moonlight’s summer season again this year. Thank you Steve and Colleen! Makeup can transform an actor to be a princess, a monster, and everything in between. It is exciting and fun to be a part of bringing the magic together to captivate an audience for a few hours. Among her favorite shows at the Moonlight are The Addams Family, The Little Mermaid, and Young Frankenstein. Cheers everyone! COLLEEN KOLLAR SMITH (Choreographer and Managing Director) is thrilled to be making her Moonlight choreographic debut for Matilda. Since 2017, Colleen has served as Moonlight’s Managing Director. She has choreographed and/or performed in over 40 productions with Lamb’s Players Theatre, including the 80s musical revue, Mixtape, which she co-created. ABOUT THE MOONLIGHT
Forty years ago, Kathy Brombacher stood on what was then a concrete stage with officials from the City of Vista and the Vista Unified School District. With no electricity, running water, or bathrooms, Brombacher proclaimed that the small stage and grassy tiers could be home to musical theatre during the summer. The “Vista Summer Theatre Festival was born and from 1981 through 1983, the city and the school district jointly produced the shows. In 1984, the festival was brought under the umbrella of the city and the theatre was renamed the Moonlight Amphitheatre. For 31 years, until her retirement on December 31, 2012, Brombacher led the development of what is now known as Moonlight Stage Productions as Producing Artistic Director. Today, Moonlight Stage Productions is recognized as one of San Diego County's major theatres, critically acclaimed for its Broadway-quality musicals. Led by Producing Artistic Director Steven Glaudini and Managing Director Colleen Kollar Smith, The Moonlight is experiencing an exciting period of audience growth and artistic vigor. Combined with Glaudini's artistic direction and buoyed by the reconstruction of the Moonlight Amphitheatre in 2008/09 with a state-of-the-art stage house, The Moonlight welcomes its audiences to experience Broadway's Best Under the Stars. In the fall of 2014, Moonlight Presents was inaugurated in order to present performing arts events year-round outside of the summer. Managing Director Colleen Kollar Smith curates the programming which has seen a 40% increase in attendance under her guidance. 20
