37 TH SUMMER SEASON AT THE MOONLIGHT AMPHITHEATRE BROADWAY’S BEST UNDER THE STARS
REMEMBERING DON WARD 1933 - 2017
Last month, the Moonlight lost one if its own with the passing of Mr. Don Ward. From 1995 until 2012, Don was an esteemed member of our artistic team as a director and choreographer, along with his wife Bonnie. The Wards were a two-person artistic team who collaborated on the direction and choreography of numerous productions. Don also graced our boards as an actor and lent his talents to fundraisers to support the Moonlight. We celebrate his artistic legacy not only here at the Moonlight, but at Starlight Musical Theatre where he and Bonnie served as Co-Artistic Directors, and San Diego Junior Theatre where Don worked as Artistic Director. We will miss his irrepressible smile, the twinkle in his eye, and his willingness to pass down his knowledge of his craft to all who asked.

WELCOME TO THE MOONLIGHT! Dear Friends, As Director James Vásquez notes on page 10, In the Heights is first and foremost about community. This universal theme couldn’t be more appropriate as we note the recent passing of San Diego theatre icon Don Ward at the age of 83. Throughout his 60-year career, Don nurtured, taught, and inspired entire generations of our regional theatre community. Along with his wife Bonnie (who he met when they were both in grade school in San Diego!), Don led San Diego Junior Theatre in its early history before Colleen Kollar Smith they both would assume icon status as the Co-Artistic and Steven Glaudini Directors of Starlight Musical Theatre in Balboa Park. Don and Bonnie helped launch the careers of hundreds of performers, including Tony Award winners Christian Hoff, Sara Ramirez, Brian Stokes Mitchell, and Casey Nicholaw. Our founding Artistic Director, Kathy Brombacher, began an artistic association with the Wards when she brought them to the Moonlight for the first time to helm a production of Guys and Dolls in 1995. So began a 15-year association which saw the Wards lending their expert talents to the Moonlight as directors and choreographers. Moonlight audiences were also fortunate to have experienced Don’s acting, dancing, and singing in numerous roles ranging from The King in both of our productions of Big River, the heavenly Starkeeper in 1999’s Carousel, the hysterical Senex opposite Steve in A Funny Thing…Forum in 2001, and many more.
Don Ward
As many actors have said, working with Don was like taking a masterclass. This is the type of priceless education he has shared with so many. We will carry on his lineage in the work that we do as the Moonlight nurtures future generations of actors. The Moonlight family celebrates Don Ward for instilling a sense of community for actors and audiences alike. We send deep condolences to his wife Bonnie, their children Kelly, Kirby, and Lori, and the rest of the family. For you, our Moonlight family, we thank you for joining us this summer for our 2017 season. We hope that you have created memories at the Moonlight as we have produced one of our best seasons ever. We look forward to seeing you this fall and into winter and spring as we present numerous special events and concerts at the Amphitheatre. With warm regards,

NOTE FROM THE DIRECTOR Welcome to Moonlight Stage Productions’ final show of the summer, In the Heights. After directing last season's The Addams Family, I'm thrilled to be back for my second summer under the stars. If I took one thing away from my experience last summer, it was the idea of “family.” I'm pleased to revisit that theme again this summer with Lin-Manuel Miranda's groundbreaking musical. Tonight, we take you back to summer 2008, Washington Heights, NYC. Much like all of our communities today, it is a true melting pot of faces, beliefs, and hopes. With the help of Lin-Manuel's brilliant and specific score, which has changed the idea of what musical theatre can be, we zoom in to get a closer look at one particular community. They fight to remember who they are and where they come from, but also look to the future and dream of who they can become, ultimately redefining what makes up a family. What a perfect season closer for Moonlight Stage Productions! It's with great pride that this cast and production team gets to bring this story to life for you and your family, be they related or chosen. And, though our faces, beliefs, and hopes may differ from each other or the person next door, Lin-Manuel Miranda's beautifully universal story proves the power of a community that stands up to have each other’s backs. James Vásquez

WHO’S WHO BEHIND THE SCENES STEVEN GLAUDINI (Producing Artistic Director) It was twentyone years ago that Steven made his Moonlight debut as Smee in Peter Pan and it has been a love affair ever since.
