WELCOME TO NEWSIES! Dear Friends, Welcome to our second production of our 38th season, the Disney Broadway musical Newsies. Larry Raben, Karl Warden, and Randi Ellen Rudolph have created a production that will inspire you with its heroic true storyline, incredible athletic dance, and a blazing musical score. Newsies centers around the power of a group when they unite around a common vision or dream. At the Moonlight Amphitheatre, our very existence began with a dream. When our founder, Kathy Brombacher, first came upon the original amphitheatre stage in the late 70s, she had a dream to produce Broadway musicals, accompanied by full orchestras in this beautiful park. Steven Glaudini and Her dream became a reality in 1981 with the launch of the Colleen Kollar Smith first season of The Moonlight. Fast forward 38 years. Today, we celebrate Kathy’s dream and the countless individuals who have united around that original vision and given their time, talent, and treasure over the years. We also invite you to join us as we look to the future. Our non-profit partner, the Moonlight Cultural Foundation, offers you the opportunity to leave your mark on The Moonlight by naming a seat in this theatre for you, a loved one, a business, or to commemorate a special date. You’ll be helping the Moonlight celebrate its 40th anniversary in 2020! Plaques range in price $250 - $1500 and will remain in place until 2030. Refer to page 23 of your program for information on this special campaign. Thank you! We are half-way through our summer season and wish to thank our subscribers and ticket buyers who helped to propel our season opener, Mamma Mia!, to the top of our most popular shows in our history. Even after adding two additional performances, the ticket demand remained high with nearly 1500 to 1900 in attendance every night. We thank our creative team of John Vaughan, the shows’ Director and Choreographer, and Lyndon Pugeda, its Musical Director and Conductor, for mounting a show that audiences stood up and cheered for at the end of the show every night. If you like epic musicals, be sure to join us for The Hunchback of Notre Dame opening on August 15. Based on the Victor Hugo novel, it showcases the songs from the hit Disney animated feature along with new songs by Alan Menken and Stephen Schwartz. To bring the summer to a close, we’re bringing you one of the most requested musicals at The Moonlight, our premiere production of Chicago, opening on September 12. This jazzy, sexy show will razzle dazzle audiences with its infectious Kander and Ebb score. Don’t forget that the Moonlight doesn’t end in September. We offer entertainment year-round with concerts, film, and indoor cabaret (on the enclosed Moonlight stage which we call ClubM). See pages four and five to see what is in store for this winter. Again, thank you for joining us at The Moonlight for Newsies. We hope it inspires you to “seize the day.” Steven Glaudini Producing Artistic Director

NOTE FROM THE DIRECTOR I am a Newsies convert! I’m embarrassed to admit that I ignored the show during its Broadway run. I was aware of the 1992 Disney musical film which starred a young Christian Bale, Bill Pullman, Ann-Margret and Robert Duvall. But I never saw it. On numerous trips to NYC during its Broadway run, I chose to see other shows that I thought might be more interesting. When the show stopped in LA on its National Tour, I saw it at The Pantages and was blown away! The feeling in the theatre was electric with youthful energy jumping off the stage. The show was written by a Broadway dream team; music by Alan Menken, lyrics by Jack Feldman, and a book by Harvey Fierstein. The score was incredibly tuneful. The book smartly musicalized the real life newsboys’ strike of 1899 blending fictional characters with historical giants, Joseph Pulitzer and Teddy Roosevelt. I became a fan. Some historical context for the show: In 1899 New York City, there were no child labor laws. Newsboys were essential to selling newspapers, especially the afternoon editions which were almost exclusively distributed by newsboys. Most of the newsboys were the children of poor immigrant families. They bought the “papes” as the newsboys referred to them for 50 cents per hundred, and sold them for a half penny profit per paper. They had to eat the cost for any unsold papers. It was very tough work for very little money. The newsboys had organized four previous strikes in the 1880s to demand a better deal but conditions never improved. On July 18, 1899 (the same date that, coincidentally, is the opening night of our production), the newsboys took on newspaper owners Joseph Pulitzer and his paper, The World, and William Randolph Hearst and his paper, The New York Journal. Many of us think of Pulitzer as a benevolent businessman who endowed the prestigious Pulitzer Prize Awards for journalism and theatre. In actuality, he was ruthless in his business practices and both men were pioneers of yellow journalism, a stain that has only grown over the past century. The newsboys stood up to Pulitzer and Hearst and demanded changes in how they were compensated as workers. They demonstrated across the Brooklyn Bridge and shut it down for several days disrupting commerce in NYC and newspaper distribution up and down the east coast. The strike culminated in a rally in Manhattan with over 7000 boys from all of the boroughs. It was a classic David vs. Goliath moment in history and awareness was raised about child labor practices all across the city. The original story and this musical are reminders of the power of youth to challenge and change the status quo. It celebrates the ability we all have to stand up to injustice and advocate for ourselves. That as individuals and collectives, we can make the world a better place for all. I am thrilled to be directing a brand new Moonlight Stage Production of this spirited musical with new and dynamic choreography by my long-time collaborator, Karl Warden. The audition process was incredible. So many young men and women desperately wanted to be in this show and you will see many new faces tonight. We have been inspired by their talent and graced by the addition of a group of seasoned pros and Moonlight favorites to round out the cast. Thank you for attending tonight. Thank you for supporting live theatre and the beautiful Moonlight Amphitheatre. SEIZE THE DAY! Larry Raben, Director Newsies is presented through special arrangement with Music Theatre International (MTI). All authorized performance materials are also supplied by MTI. mtishows.com Moonlight Stage Productions is a Cultural Arts Program of the City of Vista. The Moonlight Amphitheatre is a venue owned and operated by the City of Vista. We gratefully acknowledge the support of our non-profit fundraising partner, the Moonlight Cultural Foundation.
