WELCOME TO CHICAGO! Dear Friends, We are thrilled to welcome you to the final musical of our 38th Summer Season, the long-awaited Moonlight debut of Chicago! We have assembled an exceptional creative team and an outstanding cast, some of whom have a deep professional history with the show, either performing it on Broadway, or in the Broadway National Tour. Our co-director, Terra C. MacLeod, plays Roxie Hart in our production. She has a long association with this show having played Velma on Broadway and on National Tour. Our Velma, Roxane Carrasco, has played Steven Glaudini and this role on Broadway and in the National Tour of the Colleen Kollar Smith show. Choreographer Corey Wright has appeared in the National Tour of the show. It is exciting for us to have these three artists associated with our production of Chicago as it fulfills our promise to bring Broadway quality to The Moonlight. As always, having James Vásquez be a part of our creative team, this time as co-director, means another quality Moonlight production. It was James’ direction of last summer’s In the Heights that cemented that show as one of the region’s best. It swept the San Diego Theatre Critics Circle Craig Noel Awards earlier this year and was awarded Outstanding Resident Musical among many others. James comes to Chicago after having staged the United States premiere of Lorax at the Old Globe. We look back on this summer season with extreme pride and we thank you, our audience, for helping to make it one of our most successful. Mamma Mia! and Newsies broke records. The Hunchback of Notre Dame hit artistic heights. While the subscription model elsewhere is on the decline, at Moonlight we welcomed a record number of new subscribers. All of this is a sign that our programming is healthy and successful. We also thank our sponsors and donors to the Moonlight Cultural Foundation who support the productions you see here. Without them, we would not be able to keep our ticket prices well below what you might pay elsewhere. Lastly, we thank our City of Vista councilmembers and leaders for supporting The Moonlight and the arts. Their support enables us to bring great year-round entertainment to the Amphitheatre. We look forward to seeing you here after the curtain comes down on Chicago. We have a slate of entertainment this fall and winter. Look for our announcement of winter and spring 2019 offerings. We look forward to having you join us and hope that you will continue to make memories at The Moonlight. Sincerely,
Steven Glaudini Producing Artistic Director

NOTES FROM THE DIRECTORS In the summer of 2016, Rick Pessagno, my partner in life and love, advisor, mentor, and best friend, came to Moonlight to see me as Morticia in The Addams Family. He was blown away by the production values and the passion he witnessed that Steven Glaudini and the incredible team at Moonlight brought to their productions. Last year, Steven asked Rick to direct Chicago, and for me to perform Roxie. We were very excited to come back this summer and bring our vision of Chicago to the Moonlight. I knew right away that Rick would be the one to lead the ship as his history with the musical went way beyond my own. In 1997, Rick played Fred Casely and understudied Billy on the first national tour of Chicago. He was exquisite in bringing his Fosse style and presence to a show that would become a timeless classic. On our 2013 tour, our paths crossed, this time Rick wearing the stage manager hat. I watched and listened to him passionately tell stories about every step having a meaning and purpose. He often would watch in the wings observing every move and inflection. He loved this show. We both did and still do. Sadly, earlier this year, Rick passed away. As time went by, I was approached to direct the show in honor of him. I knew I would need a team of people to help me navigate the ship left behind. I wanted to Moonlight Stage Productions make him proud and it became my mission to honor dedicates its production of Chicago to the memory of Rick Pessagno. his legacy and vision of the show. We did just that. We gathered a wonderful artistic team from day Photo by Terra C. MacLeod one who were not only dear friends, but incredibly talented visionaries and artists. I’m so grateful to them, you know who you are. I believe that beyond the footlights there is a silhouette of a man tipping his hat to us all, with a nod of the head and a Fosse walk and a grin so big it outshines the stars. Lyla, this is for you. Terra C. MacLeod Co-Director
Along with entertaining and sending the audience out the theatre singing and tapping their toes having had the best time of their lives, I've always believed our jobs as storytellers is to challenge, educate and open eyes to the world around us. And every so often a musical comes along accomplishing all that while reminding us unless we change, history can and will repeat itself. I'm thrilled to be spending my third summer at the Moonlight, with this incredibly talented and passionate family of artists, sharing the music and story of Chicago. We hope you enjoy the show, sing and dance your way back to the car, and on the ride home maybe open a conversation about how we as a country can weed through the glitz and glamour and come together as one.
