NOTE FROM THE DIRECTOR
It is with great pleasure that I direct and choreograph this production of Aida for Moonlight. This modern rock opera, based on the classic opera by Verdi, is a timeless ode to the power of love against all odds. Aida premiered on Broadway on March 23, 2000 and ran for nearly 2,000 performances until September 5, 2004. It was nominated for five Tony Awards and won four including Best Original Score and Best Performance by a Leading Actress, and was also named by Time Magazine as one of the top ten theatre productions of the year. The score by Elton John does more than provide the listener with the pop melodies we have come to enjoy from him, it evokes a timeless roadmap of the passions that love can instill through the human condition. This production, led by an amazing group of performers is an evening brimming with passion, complete with soaring vocals and eye popping visuals that are sure to delight all of you. Enjoy! ABOUT AIDA
The opera and rock version of Aida share some commonalities: both share the plot and main characters, and both are spectacles. The Italian composer, Giuseppe Verdi, originally declined the commission of composing a new opera meant to celebrate the opening of the Suez Canal and a new opera house in Cairo in 1869. Instead, Verdi’s Rigoletto was performed and the opera house sought another composer for an original work. When learning that composers Gounod and Wagner were being considered, Verdi acquiesced and began to work on Aida in 1870. Aida had been planned to premiere in January 1871, but the outbreak of the Franco-Prussian War in Europe stranded the sets and costumes in Paris. The premiere at the Khedival Opera House in Cairo finally took place that December followed by the La Scala premiere 1872. It was a tremendous hit and made its United States debut in 1873 followed by London in 1876. Today, it is one of the most performed operas throughout the world. Fast forward 126 years to Elton John and Tim Rice’s incarnation which took place in Atlanta in 1998, followed by the pre-Broadway run in Chicago. Aida landed on Broadway in March 2000 where it would play for nearly 2000 performances capturing several Tony Awards.

NOTES FROM “THE HILL” WELCOME COLLEEN Earlier this year, the City of Vista appointed Colleen Kollar Smith as the new Managing Director of Moonlight Stage Productions. Colleen literally got her feet wet in theatre at the Moonlight when she performed in youth theatre productions on our stage as a youngster. She went on to become a co-director of that program and later assumed management positions at other theatres including San Diego Musical Theatre, Lamb’s Players Theatre, and New Village Arts among others. Colleen enjoyed attending Moonlight shows with her grandmother and is now looking forward to doing the same with her own two children. Colleen will work side-by-side with Producing Artistic Director Steven Glaudini in shaping the future of the Moonlight in addition to programming Moonlight Presents offerings. Welcome back to Vista, Colleen! ARTISAN CAFÉ SERVES UP PRE-SHOW DINING One of the hallmarks of attending a show at the Moonlight is creating your own experience. You can bring your own picnic supper into the theatre, or enjoy a casual dining experience at the Artisan Café. Located near the North Entrance, the Café offers a three course menu which can be enjoyed starting at 6 pm on show nights. View the menu at moonlightstage.com and make reservations by calling 760.828.0596. EXTEND YOUR MOONLIGHT EXPERIENCE The shows don't end when summer is over at the Moonlight Amphitheatre. Year-round, we offer entertainment including concerts and an indoor cabaret season. Three events from Moonlight Presents are offered this fall (see page four), and next month we’ll announce our 2018 cabaret series. Visit moonlightpresents.com for information. PLAYING ON THE HILL Veterans of Moonlight productions from long ago often referred to the amphitheatre as “the hill.” That name could have been earned because to access the theatre in the early days, one had to literally drive up a hill. Access was via dirt roads with the hillside lined with temporary fencing to separate the rustic backstage area from the audience. It is true that actors would hang their costumes in trees. While those trees have since been replaced, the spirit of bringing great musical theatre to “the hill” has not changed. 20
