Dear Friends of Make-A-Wish® San Diego– Please enjoy our 2014 Annual Report highlighting another successful year of wish granting in San Diego. We hope that you take a great deal of pride in knowing that you, our San Diego friends and supporters, have made all of the local wishes we grant possible. We learned long ago, not to measure our success by just the number of wishes granted, but by the number of lives changed and smiles made. Now, if you’ve been to our San Diego office, you’ve no doubt seen our “Wall of Wishes”, celebrating each wish that we grant by hanging a star with each Wish Kid’s name, their wish and the year their wish was granted. If you’ve not visited our “Wall”, we hope that you will come see us soon. All of this good does not happen by accident, as there are over 250 wishgranting volunteers who support our mission, raise awareness and funds, and influence all of our steps throughout the year. As you read through this report, please take a moment to check out all our amazing 2014 Volunteer Award Recipients. Also note our 2014 Donor Award Recipients, and the many corporate partners, individuals and community supporters listed in our 2014 Honor Roll of Donors. These supporters include our cherished “Legacy of Wishes” donors; generous individuals who have made the decision to name Make-A-Wish San Diego in their estates ensuring that no child with a lifethreatening illness in San Diego and Imperial Counties will have to wait for a wish to come true … ever! All of our volunteers and donors have found a way to give back to our community by supporting the Make-A-Wish mission. Whether you are able to give of your time, talents or treasures, we hope that you’ve found a way to make a difference here at Make-A-Wish. If not, please give us a call to find your place. You may be pleased to know that Make-A-Wish San Diego is considered one of the top charities in Southern California, as it spends 78 cents of every dollar raised to grant wishes for local kids. We had our largest wish-granting year in our chapter’s history in 2014, granting over 200 wishes. While this is wonderful news, our need is still great. Our research suggests that as many as 311 children in the San Diego community could be diagnosed with a life-threatening illness this year. Currently we are only reaching 2/3 of these medically-eligible children in San Diego, and to narrow this gap, we have set a goal of granting 100 more wishes in the next three years than the previous three. It will take a special group of people to work together to make certain these children have the opportunity to have their wishes come true, so please consider joining our local initiative, “The 100 Wish Challenge” to help us make an even greater impact in San Diego. Wishes change lives, not just for each sick child, but for families, friends, classmates and communities. This is what we call the Power of a Wish®. Our Mission We grant the wishes of children with life-threatening medical conditions to enrich the human experience with hope, strength and joy. Who We Are Founded in 1983, Make-A-Wish® San Diego has granted more than 3,400 wishes to children in San Diego and Imperial Counties. In addition, we host more than 200 children a year from other states and countries whose wishes bring them to San Diego. Our small and committed staff relies on more than 250 active volunteers to fulfill our mission. Our volunteers participate in all facets of our operations, including wish granting, fundraising, office support, special events, community relations, and governance. Make-A-Wish San Diego is part of Make-A-Wish America, which through its network of chapters has granted more than 250,000 wishes since 1980. Today, a wish is granted every 38 minutes in the U.S. How A Wish Happens Any child who is between the ages of 2½ and 17 at the time of referral, who is verified by a physician to have a lifethreatening medical condition, and who has not previously received a wish from any wish-granting organization, is eligible for a wish. Once eligible, a volunteer wish team then learns the child’s one true wish by helping explore their imagination, and creates an unforgettable experience driven by the child’s creativity. Impact of a Wish
89% of doctors, nurses, social workers and child life specialists say they believe that the wish experience can influence wish kids’ physical health.
74% of wish parents observed that the wish experience marked a turning point in their own children’s response to treatment.
91% of parents observed that the wish experience decreased their children’s depression or sadness. 85% of parents observed a decrease in their children’s anxieties or fears. Based on a 2011 Wish Impact Study conducted by Make-A-Wish America.

Stewardship and Strength We are proud of the way we manage and safeguard the general contributions we receive from individual donors, corporations, and other organizations. Seventy-eight percent of the revenue received is allotted to wish-granting services. This percentage well exceeds the standard upheld by organizations that monitor the work of charities. ALISON MAKES A SPLASH DURING HER WISH Alison, from North Carolina, is one of over 200 Wish Kids that visited San Diego for their one true wish this year. Alison wished for a unique animal experience during her stay in San Diego, one that was provided by our friends at Nurtured by Nature. During this one-of-a-kind animal encounter, Alison got to hold armadillos, hang out with kangaroos and sloths and even went swimming with otters. Due to Alison’s medical condition, a rare inherited disease that causes damage to the nervous system, she is confined to a wheelchair and deals with mobility restrictions every day. However, during Alison’s wish experience there were no limits to the joy she experienced!
THOR DISCOVERS THE LAST FRONTIER Thor’s interest in wilderness and wildlife defined his one true wish: to go to Alaska. Experiencing such a magnificent place was an opportunity of a lifetime for Thor and his family. The views of incredible glaciers and mountains were just a few of the “wild” adventures on this trip. Most of all, Thor was able to explore one of his greatest passions: fishing. The family went salmon fishing on the Kenai River, and Thor pulled in quite the catch. Although Thor has cystic fibrosis, nothing stopped him from hauling in magnificent salmon and rainbow trout. On this excursion, Thor’s love for the sport transcended his condition. For Thor, fishing in Alaska meant more than just a fun trip. For Thor, it was his wish come true. Wish adopted by Underground Elephant

JOSIAH’S HAWAIIAN TRIP OF A LIFETIME “It was an amazing, awesome, once-in-a-lifetime experience! It was a rare opportunity for Josiah to feel like a rock star...not because he is sick or disabled, but because he is so special.” ~ Josiah’s Mom, Hope Josiah was born with spina bifida, a skeletal malformation, and continues to have annual surgeries due to serious complications of his condition. He also has chronic infections from a leg amputation received when he was younger. When deciding his truest wish he chose a trip to Hawaii--a place he’d only seen on TV--so that he could also share the experience with his family who had been there for him throughout so many doctor visits and hospital stays. In addition to a trip filled with beaches and Disney characters, Josiah was greeted by people at the airports, hotel and on the planes when they realized he was a Make-A-Wish Kid. “People made him feel like royalty. He felt good about himself (during the trip) and he also was able to do something wonderful for the rest of his family,” shared Hope.
PRINCESS ALYSSA’S ROYAL BALL Thank you to Disney for creating timeless bonds and memories to help kids through treatments, overcome doubts and help them feel and get better--because wishes work wonders. Disney wishes come in all forms, from Disney theme parks to the Aulani Resort in Hawaii to Disney cruises to Disney-inspired wishes... like Alyssa’s wish for a royal ball. Alyssa loves Disney movies. A talented vocalist, she also enjoys singing the song, “Let it Go,” from Disney’s Frozen. When it came to choosing her wish, Alyssa knew without hesitation that it would involve her favorite Disney characters. But the heart of Alyssa’s wish was even more than that. Because this young girl’s large family was a key part of her recovery, Alyssa’s wish for a Royal Ball was inspired not only by her love of Disney, but also by her love of her family and her desire to share her wish with them. Alyssa’s wish experience was one of pure joy: a celebration with the people she holds dear to her heart. Wish adopted by Alexxa Morgan (pictured above with Alyssa)
