2017 FARMERS INSURANCE OPEN

CENTURY CLUB HELLO AND WELCOME TO THE 2017 FARMERS INSURANCE OPEN®! To many like me, San Diego has become home. As my first week here coincided with the unforgettable 2008 US Open, I quickly came to the natural conclusion that no matter how long I lived in “America’s Finest City,” my first week would inevitably be my best. That was until I discovered the Century Club of San Diego and became involved in the Farmers Insurance Open. For nearly six decades, the Century Club has proudly served as the host organization for San Diego’s PGA TOUR event. In that time, the tournament has grown to be recognized as one of the premier sporting events in the world, and Torrey Pines one of the world’s most iconic sporting venues. Like our tournament, the Century Club has a rich history of its own: deeply rooted in our mission to maximize support for the San Diego community and the local youth programs with which we work, as well as our vision to become San Diego’s greatest benefactor and ambassador. With this spectacular tournament serving as our fundraising platform, the Century Club is proud to have positively impacted thousands of San Diego’s at-risk and underprivileged youth, via our Champions for Youth program. I’d also like to take a moment to recognize those that make this remarkable event happen: the more than 1,000 dedicated Tournament Volunteers who make this event possible; the world’s best title sponsor in Farmers Insurance; an incredible Tournament partner in the City of San Diego; the leadership of the PGA TOUR, and the tireless work of the Tournament Staff and my Century Club colleagues. But most importantly you, the fans, for being here. Only your support makes this event matter and meaningful. All those mentioned have collectively taken this event to unprecedented levels of success. I am humbled to have played a small role in the 2017 Farmers Insurance Open and will forever appreciate it for showing me that my first week in America’s Finest City wasn’t even close to being my best. Many thanks again to you all and now go Get Your Torrey On!

The tournament offers something for everyone – a world-class field of PGA TOUR players, engaging fan activities and stunning views of the Pacific Ocean. Torrey Pines Golf Course always provides one of the greatest tests in golf and this year will be the debut of the redesigned North Course. Last year, Brandt Snedeker put together one of the best rounds the South Course has ever seen. The harsh conditions forced a Monday finish and Snedeker won his second Farmers Insurance Open title. The win, Snedeker’s eighth on the PGA TOUR, was also his fourth comeback of at least five shots in the final round. Snedeker joins a prolific list of players to win the tournament multiple times including Tiger Woods, Phil Mickelson and Arnold Palmer. Farmers Insurance and the Century Club of San Diego are committed to making a difference in the San Diego community. The tournament provides an ideal platform to impact the community through various charitable activities. SUITS FOR SOLDIERS Farmers Insurance, a company founded by two World War I veterans, has a longstanding commitment to supporting military and their families. In October, Farmers launched a nationwide campaign, Suits for Soldiers, to assist military personnel with the transition from active duty to civilian work life by providing them with the proper business attire. Earlier this week, Farmers Insurance and PGA TOUR players presented suits to local veterans. Farmers Insurance also teamed up with the Armed Services YMCA, one of the Champions for Youth organizations, to host a suit distribution alongside the Armed Services YMCA Neighborhood Food Exchange. Farmers executives, district managers and employees distributed suits and business attire to attending veterans.

DEFENDING CHAMPION Brandt Snedeker rallied from six shots off the lead, coming back from a tie for 27th after the third round to win the Farmers Insurance Open for the second time in five years. Snedeker edged third-round co-leader K.J. Choi by one stroke to earn a $1,170,000 winner’s check and 500 FedExCup points. The lead would change many times throughout the 5-day tournament. When the first round of the 2016 Farmers Insurance Open concluded, Scott Brown and Andrew Loupe had emerged as the leaders when both golfers posted a 66 at Torrey Pines, sharing the one-stroke lead over four different players. On Friday, Derek Fathauer had the round of the day when he fired a bogey-free 7-under-65 on the North Course. Fathauer started with three birdies and finished with three straight. Favorites such as defending champion Jason Day, Rickie Fowler, and Phil Mickelson were all headed home after failing to make the -1 cut. Opening round leader Scott Brown shot an even-par 72 and still remained in contention, just two spots behind the leaders. Dustin Johnson’s bogey-free 66 on the North Course propelled him to second, just one stroke behind leaders K.J. Choi and Gary Woodland. Continued on next page

DEFENDING CHAMPION The tight race continued on Saturday. Brown kept himself in a position to win on Sunday, after posting a solid 70. K.J. Choi shot an even-par in round three, and while it wasn’t his best performance, it was enough to hang around the top of the leaderboard. After 54 holes, Jimmy Walker sat in the clubhouse in solo place for second after going 17-for-17 on putts inside 15 feet in the third round. Brandt Snedeker was the only one who had anything going on Sunday at Torrey Pines. Arguably his best round as a professional on the PGA TOUR, Snedeker battled through heavy rain and 45 mph winds to finish with a 3-under-par 69, the only player to break par in the final round. “One of my best rounds on Tour, by far,” Snedeker said. “Under these conditions, to shoot anything under par or around par is a good round. To shoot 69 when you need to, really special.” Snedeker, who made the cut on the line, played his final 17 holes Sunday without a bogey – even as half of the players who finished Sunday shot 80 or higher. While Snedeker finished his final round Sunday, severe weather forced 49 players to complete their final rounds Monday – the second time in four years the tournament was extended to five days. On Monday, Jimmy Walker and K.J. Choi battled extreme winds to stay within reach of Snedeker. Choi came within one shot of the victory, but missed a 30-foot birdie by a yard on the final hole. Snedeker would win his second Farmers Insurance Open at 6-under. “I can’t tell you how excited I am to be the champion here again, how unbelievable the last 48 hours have been.” Snedeker said. “I thought I was out of the tournament when I started on Sunday morning. Now to have a chance to be holding the trophy is unbelievable. Everything worked out perfectly for me.”

FedExCup THE FEDEXCUP PLAYOFFS The FedExCup Playoffs started with a field of 125 players at The Barclays in New York. The world ranked number one, Jason Day, finished T-4th with Adam Scott and Gary Woodland, as Patrick Reed claimed the victory. Patrick Reed won by only one stroke over Emiliano Grillo and Sean O’Hair and moved from seventh place to first place in the standings. Sean O’Hair jumped from 108th to 15th in the standing and secured his spot in the next round with his surprising performance. Shane Lowry, Peter Malnati, Robert Streb, Lucas Glover and Jonas Blixt all ended their FedExCup hopes, and the remaining 100 golfers were off to the next round in Boston. For the second leg of the playoffs swing, the TOUR headed to The Deutsche Bank Championship. It was here that Rory Mcllroy won by just two strokes and jumped 34 places to number four in the standings. Paul Casey was the runner-up, with Jimmy Walker finishing in third. Mcllroy’s victory gave him sufficient momentum moving into the final stretch of the FedEx Cup Playoffs. As the end drew closer, players stepped up their game. The BMW Championship took us to Carmel, Indiana where some familiar names came to shine. Dustin Johnson took the BMW Championship by storm shooting a round of 63 (-9). This was the lowest ever at the BMW Championship at Crooked Stick Golf Club. Johnson’s impeccable round saw him catch up with overnight leader Roberto Castro at 14 under par. Dustin Johnson clinched the victory on the final day with a 5-under 67, and secured his spot in the TOUR Championship. Paul Casey was the runner-up in his second straight playoff event, after losing to Mcllroy the week before. Johnson moved up two spots from number three to number one before the points were reset for the final leg of the championship. It all came down to the TOUR Championship by Coca-Cola. The top five players consisted of Dustin Johnson, Patrick Reed, Adam Scott, Jason Day and Paul Casey, although none of these players were going to take home the trophy.

Rory Mcllroy clinched the victory with a three-man playoff. Mcllroy was three shots back with three holes left to play and fought his way back to force a playoff with Kevin Chappell and Ryan Moore. This could be considered the most dramatic and exciting TOUR Championship in its 10-year history. McIlroy picked up $11.53 million in one day - the $10 million FedExCup bonus and $1.53 million for the TOUR Championship. This was his second victory in three weeks, which made him the first player to win four FedExCup playoff events. The FedEx Cup season promises weekly interest as the excitement builds throughout the season. Testing golfers through 39 weeks of regular season play, the FedExCup sets up the pressure-packed FedExCup Playoffs — a four-week post-season series that’s progressively more intense each week. The FedExCup Playoffs narrows 125 players down to the final 30 who will play for it all at the TOUR Championship presented by Coca-Cola. The winner of this week’s Farmers Insurance Open will receive 500 points. Will your favorite player have what it takes to make it to the final challenge? Don’t miss a moment of FedExCup action.

The key on this relatively straight hole is the approach: the ball should come to rest on the front portion of the sloping green to give any chance of birdie.

6

SOUTH PAR 5 560 YARDS

Players can attack this par 5 by carrying the canyon on the right with a high draw. Otherwise, the prudent shot is down the left, avoiding five fairway bunkers. The difficulty on the second shot will be getting a long approach to land softly on the green.

15

SOUTH PAR 4 478 YARDS

Players who shape their shots won’t find much room here. Eucalyptus trees protect both sides of this tight fairway and the slightly uphill green slopes aggressively from right to left. Shots coming from the right had better land softly if a player wants to have putter in hand for his third shot.

16

SOUTH PAR 3 223/193 YARDS

The two teeing grounds have a dramatic effect on how this hole is played. The shorter tee, to the left, brings two greenside bunkers into play, but players can aim right and ride the prevailing breeze. The front of the green is open from the longer tee, but the wind can complicate the angle. 2 0 1 7 FA R M E R S I N S U R A N C E O P E N

39

17

SOUTH PAR 4 442 YARDS

A high draw from the tee will take the fairway bunker on the right – 275 yards to the front of it – out of play. That will leave a middle-to-shortiron approach to an elevated, wide, and severely undulating green protected by two bunkers in front.

18

SOUTH PAR 5 570 YARDS

The closing hole is a great par 5 – basically straight but with a twist in the drive zone – on which anything can happen. Just ask Bruce Devlin. In contention for the 1975 Andy Williams San Diego Open, the Australian took six hacks to get his ball out of the water in front of the green on his way to making a 10. The pond is now called “Devlin’s Billabong.”

FedExCup THE RACE TO THE FINISH Introduced in 2007, the PGA TOUR’s season-long FedExCup points competition is a thrilling showcase for golf’s biggest names. Tiger Woods won the inaugural FedExCup in 2007 and its $10-million top prize and won again in 2009. Others to hoist the FedExCup trophy include Brandt Snedeker (2012), Henrik Stenson (2013), Billy Horschel (2014), Jordan Spieth (2015), and Rory McIlroy (2016). During the PGA TOUR Season, TOUR members earn points based on their results, with a strong emphasis placed on winning and high finishes. Once the PGA TOUR Season concludes, the top-125 players advance to the FedExCup Playoffs. The Playoffs feature a progressive cut, beginning with The Northern Trust, continuing with the Deutsche Bank Championship, and the BMW Championship. A reseed takes place, seeding the top-30 players for the culminating TOUR Championship, where the FedExCup Champion is crowned.

THE NEW NORTH Following a comprehensive nine-month, $12.6 million renovation, the North Course at Torrey Pines Golf Course reopened to an eagerly awaiting golfing public this past November. Originally designed by William F. Bell and opened in 1957, the renovated North Course now stands to rival the popularity of the world famous South Course, host of the U.S. Open in 2008 and in 2021. For course architect and golfing great Tom Weiskopf, redesigning the North Course was a project that held a special place in his golf career and design portfolio. His first career win came at Torrey Pines at the 1968 Andy Williams-San Diego Open, predecessor to the current Farmers Insurance Open played every January at Torrey Pines. After a playing career that included 16 PGA TOUR Titles, including the 1973 Open Championship, Mr. Weiskopf has since been instrumental in the design of over 60 golf courses over the last three decades, including TPC Scottsdale Stadium Course — site of the PGA TOUR’s Waste Management Phoenix Open. “It’s really special,” Wesikopf said. “And to work on a piece of property that amazing doesn’t happen very often. The sheer beauty of the place always captivates me. Now people can look forward to playing 36 incredible holes at Torrey Pines by playing the North and the South.”

44

2 0 1 7 FA R M E R S I N S U R A N C E O P E N

While the North Course maintains a similar feel to its original design, there were some significant changes. The number of bunkers has been reduced from 59 to 41, and the average green size increased from 4,500 square feet to 6,400. All 18 greens were completely reconstructed to United States Golf Association standards. The front and back nines were also reversed, allowing golfers spectacular ocean and canyon views as they finish their rounds. “Switching the nines is very significant because the back nine is so iconic with its incredible views,” Weiskopf said. “The larger greens allow for more pin placements and more variety, and we’ve taken out bunkers but kept others that are strategically placed.” “I tried to bring the North Course into the 21st century,” Weiskopf said. “It was built in the 1950s, and nothing of significance had ever been done to it. Everything we did in the redesign was to bring it up to current standards. It’s now a top-of-the-line golf course.” The age-old question of Torrey North or Torrey South is now not-so-slam-dunk. The New North has arrived.

“...The sheer beauty of the place always captivates me. Now people can look forward to playing 36 incredible holes at Torrey Pines by playing the North and the South.” ~ Tom Wesikopf

1

NORTH PAR 4 421 YARDS

Open the round with a straightforward par-4 outlined by a bunker on the left-hand side and a large eucalyptus tree on the right. The expansive green is protected by front bunkers on either side.

2

NORTH PAR 4 495 YARDS

With rolling hills and exceptional length, the second hole is the longest par-4 on the course and plays into a prevailing wind. A canyon borders the left side of this hole that features only one bunker. The split-level green provides an extra challenge for players who end up on the wrong tier.

3

NORTH PAR 3 241 YARDS

The first par-3 on the course directs players west and is challenging for players of all skill levels. In addition to the length, a deep bunker guards the small green perched neatly atop a hill.

4

NORTH PAR 4 479 YARDS

The combination of difficulty and beauty of this par-4 hole is accented by trees and a large bunker on the corner of this downhill dogleg-left tee shot. Two more bunkers on either side of the large, semiblind green make par a good score.

5

NORTH PAR 5 525 YARDS

The easiest and shortest of all par-5s on the North Course. On this slight dogleg-left that usually plays downwind, players will want to avoid the bunkers to the right to reach the green in two. Only a small bunker on the left makes this hole attack-worthy, but notice the pin location on the tiered green.

6

NORTH PAR 4 416 YARDS

This short par-4 features a single bunker on the left-hand side of the fairway. Another bunker protects the right side of a deep, narrow green that penalizes players either short with a false front or on the left due to the closely-mown area.

7

NORTH PAR 4 322 YARDS

This newly-drivable par-4 is highlighted by two bunkers on the left side that challenge the tee shot. The green presents some putting, chipping and pitching challenges. Two wellplayed shots will yield a great chance for an easy birdie.

8

NORTH PAR 3 214 YARDS

The tee on this par-3 is the highest point and offers a beautiful view of the course. It features an inviting downhill elevation change to a contoured green that is shielded by extensive bunkering on either side.

9

NORTH PAR 5 556 YARDS

The outward nine concludes with a mid-length par-5 bordered by trees and a bunker on the left in the landing area. The small green is well-protected by two cavernous bunkers on both sides. A good opportunity for a birdie or easy par.

10

NORTH PAR 5 536 YARDS

The back nine begins with a reachable par-5 that depends on a solid tee shot. Avoid a massive bunker on the right to reach the green in two. The dramatic, small green features a blind coffin bunker and a great view of the Pacific Ocean.

11

NORTH PAR 4 339 YARDS

The second-shortest par-4 on the course deceives players with four visible bunkers from the tee box that appear to line the landing area. Three, however, are situated strategically around the green, making a conservative approach from the tee advantageous.

12

NORTH PAR 3 203 YARDS

A wide, contoured green awaits players on this elevated par-3. Its signature feature is a vast ravine that defines the entire left side and forces a significant carry from the tees to safely reach the green.

13

NORTH PAR 4 459 YARDS

This demanding par-4 plays alongside the ravine on the left with a bunker on the right. The green is especially challenging because it features a unique “hog back” running through the middle. The deceptive approach shot plays longer than it looks.

14

NORTH PAR 4 451 YARDS

This par-4 is another long, demanding hole. The challenge off the tee is to drive the ball between the eucalyptus trees on either side of the fairway. It is one of course designer Tom Weiskopf’s favorite holes.

15

NORTH PAR 3 202 YARDS

The par-3 signature hole offers exceptional challenge and beauty. Dramatic elevation off the tee offers a significant hardship into the large, tiered green, especially when considering the strong ocean breeze.

16

NORTH PAR 4 393 YARDS

This par-4 tasks players with driving the ball across a valley to a narrow fairway while the second shot is played uphill to a blind green. The old navigational marker framing the green gives players the line of play on the approach.

17

NORTH PAR 5 520 YARDS

This par-5 is a reachable par-5. Players must avoid the large eucalyptus tree and two bunkers on the left. There is a canyon bordering the hole that impacts the second and third shots. The green location is adjacent to a canyon, making this an exciting risk-reward par-5.

18

NORTH PAR 4 486 YARDS

The trying home hole heads toward the clubhouse and boasts one of the longest par-4s on the course. The landing area is semi-blind, but there are no fairway bunkers to contend with to provide balance. The complex green is the largest on the course and is protected by three bunkers.

Q & A WITH CENTURY CLUB PRESIDENT

BRIAN O’CALLAGHAN

Why did you become a Century Club member? I joined the Century Club in 2009 when I reached a point where I wanted to spend more of my time giving back. The Century Club was the perfect avenue for me from two perspectives. We are focused on the underprivileged and underserved youth of our community and we serve those populations via the tournament. As someone with a lifelong passion for golf, I figured why not combine my philanthropic pursuits and personal passions for good? Can you tell us something about the Century Club that we might not know? The Century Club is a hidden gem in this community. It’s a body of likeminded people with experience and expertise from many areas of personal and professional life. Our members do what they do without any ambition for recognition or reward, as they simply wish to improve the lives of others less fortunate. Those Century Club shoes…when you lace ‘em up, do you feel more Fred Astaire or Gene Kelly? Or…Michael Flatley?! I feel more like Krusty the Clown. As President, what accomplishments make you most proud? This year, we worked to capitalize upon the progress of previous years. We continue to receive recognition from the PGA TOUR that we are among the biggest and best tournaments. Our relationship with Farmers Insurance continues to improve, as our tournament aligns so well with their corporate and charitable goals. Our partnership with the City grows stronger, as our global broadcast provides San Diego with such invaluable exposure. But most importantly, we are achieving unprecedented levels of charitable impact via our Champions for Youth Program. Okay, the Irish accent. It’s fake, right? Tell us it’s fake. Back in Ireland they think I’ve got an American accent now. So it sounds like I’m an identity crisis waiting to happen. What unique opportunities lie ahead for the Century Club and the Farmers Insurance Open? Our opportunities rest within our very mission and vision of hosting a world class PGA TOUR event to maximize support for the San Diego community and its local youth programs. By doing so, we move closer to our ultimate objective of becoming San Diego’s greatest ambassador and benefactor. With that answer in mind, where do you see the Century Club in five years? I see the Century Club being used as a model for other cities with similar ambitions to better their own communities from within, who want to promote themselves well beyond their borders, or wish to raise their profile by hosting events such as the Farmers Insurance Open. After all of the preparation that goes into this Event…what will you do the day after the Tournament? Call the tournament office to make sure I was only dreaming about the Monday playoff. 64

THE GEORGE AND BETTY HARBAUGH CHARITABLE FOUNDATION IS PROUD TO SPONSOR THE PATRIOTS’ OUTPOST AT THE 2017 FARMERS INSURANCE OPEN

George and Betty Harbaugh were longtime San Diego residents with a passion for life. They gave to numerous causes and helped many individuals over the years, but you would never know it by talking to them. After his wife’s passing, George wanted to ensure that Betty’s and his estate was left to better the lives of others, hence the formation of the George & Betty Harbaugh Charitable Foundation. While he was legendary for his conservative spending, George’s life was secretly filled with gifts to people in need. He was a quiet gentleman with extreme ethics and lofty moral standards. He was fair and honest, but, because of his modesty, most of his gifts went unknown to most. Only after George’s passing was the full extent of his generosity realized, as more and more of his friends surfaced with stories of his big-heartedness. It is this kind, thoughtful and impactful giving that drives the George & Betty Harbaugh Charitable Foundation. It is this code of honor and fairness, this reaching out to help the little guy, the thoughtful advancement of human achievement, that keeps the Harbaugh name and their generous nature alive.

THANK YOU TO OUR VOLUNTEERS Each January, roughly 120,000 guests descend upon Torrey Pines to enjoy Southern California’s premier social event – The Farmers Insurance Open. And like clockwork, every year they are met with open arms by the most passionate and humble collection of volunteers that any organization could ask for. These selfless individuals rake bunkers, greet guests, update scores, and above all, keep us safe. This year, over 1,000 men and women will roll up their sleeves and dedicate an entire week of their lives to ensure that the Farmers Insurance Open experience is second to none. They work with uncommon passion and united purpose: the betterment of our community. They are our neighbors and colleagues; teachers and friends. And they are the unsung heroes of The Farmers Insurance Open. Think about those numbers. For every 100 guests on property is a bleary-eyed Tournament Volunteer making it all possible. This year, the Century Club of San Diego and Farmers Insurance would like to pay tribute to one special volunteer, who has dedicated so much of himself and his life to this event and the countless youth and youth charities it supports. The 2017 Farmers Insurance Open marks the 50th consecutive Tournament at which Bob Steber has volunteered. In 1968, Bob made his volunteer debut as a Tournament Marshall. Since then, he has walked alongside golf’s greats, both past and present, from Nicklaus to Couples, Watson to Woods. His favorite player? San Diego native Phil Mickelson, of course! When asked what kept him coming back year-after-year, Bob simply answers, “I love it! It’s so much fun!” No doubt Bob has seen to a lot of that fun over the years…

72

2 0 1 7 FA R M E R S I N S U R A N C E O P E N

Back in the days of the Andy Williams Open, it was common for Hollywood royalty to join in on the Tournament’s events. One year, Bob decided to have a little fun at his kid sister’s expense. Knowing Dean Martin would be there, Bob dared his sister to steal just the tiniest of kisses. The young Ms. Steber readied herself in a prime spot by the first tee, and as just as Dean approached, she hurled herself towards him, flung her arms around his neck, and came in for that unforgettable kiss. To Bob’s delight and his sister’s horror, The King of Cool lived up to his reputation: Dean simply shrugged off his would-be suitor and went about his business as the younger Steber darted into the crowd, mortified. To hear his chuckle as Bob recounts the story today, is to understand the plight of younger siblings everywhere. But it’s also a glimpse into the warmth and the heart of a man who would do anything to make this event just a little more fun, the experience just a little bit better, and the lives of children supported by the Farmers Insurance Open, just a little bit easier…except for his sister. This week, he’s one of a thousand. But in our book, you’re one of a kind, Bob. So thank you, Bob, and thank you to all of our Tournament Volunteers. As a part of the Farmers Insurance Open family, you’ve left an indelible mark on the lives of so many San Diegans.
