WELCOME FROM OUR VICE PRESIDENT, AWARDS SARAH MACDONALD It is a great honor and tremendous privilege to serve on the CAPIO board as your Vice President of Awards. I am humbled by the level of achievement, innovation, dedication and creativity that public communicators invest on a 24/7 basis, working tirelessly to educate, inform and connect communities. Newly named the Excellence in Public Information and Communications (EPIC) awards, CAPIO is proud to have offered an awards program for the past decade. One of our key goals as an association is to recognize excellence in the industry and acknowledge the profound impact made in the communities we serve. With nearly 200 entries from agencies across California and beyond, the 2018 EPIC Awards showcases the very best in practice and programs taking place in public agencies across California and beyond. Tonight, we also celebrate and honor three colleagues who have demonstrated public information excellence through contributions to CAPIO and their positive impact on the public communications profession. The Communicator of the Year Award recognizes outstanding efforts and successes in 2017. We will also be honoring an individual and team who demonstrated extraordinary success in leading a team during a natural disaster, act of terrorism, or a reputational crisis with the Frank Potter Cowan Crisis Communications Leader Award. Finally, the prestigious Paul B. Clark Award recognizes a career of milestone achievements and CAPIO involvement. It’s an honor to present these awards to well-deserving individuals who were nominated by their colleagues and peers. Congratulations to all our 2018 EPIC award winners! Be sure to stick around for the EPIC After-Party following our awards program and featuring one of Santa Rosa County’s top DJs that will be sure to keep the party going. With all my best,

FRANK POTTER COWAN CRISIS COMMUNICATIONS LEADER, TEAM AWARD COUNTY OF SAN DIEGO COMMUNICATIONS OFFICE The County’s Communications Department exemplified regional leadership last year by creating and managing crisis communications strategies for both the unprecedented public health Hepatitis A outbreak and for the fast-spreading Lilac Fire. The County successfully and strategically responded to the severe Hepatitis A breakout that led to a state of Public Health Emergency. During that time, the team was able to respond to more than 220 national and local media requests, paying close attention to complex inquires with many legal and medical considerations. Simultaneously, the department worked diligently to develop their wildfire communications strategy, demonstrating their multifaceted public outreach. Knowing fall in Southern California is historically dry due to the extreme Santa Ana winds, the team successfully communicated to multiple audiences through many mediums fire prevention messages. These strategies paid off when the fast-spreading Lilac Fire erupted in North County San Diego. Their social media presence in Twitter produced an outstanding 2.1 million impressions and 3,349 retweets with an increased following of 5,466 community members. The county also kept their network of more than 300 regional PIOs regularly updated and encouraged information sharing to ensure all residents and stakeholders were informed before, during and after the devastating fire. The County Communications Office is the centralized department responsible for the County of San Diego’s internal and external communications. The team manages CountyNewsCenter.com, which is the County’s news and information website, social media, media relations, emergency/crisis communications, public outreach, the employee website and many other projects. The Communications Office also leads a group of 300+ PIOs in our region to share information and best practices, as well as make professional connections in advance of a regional disaster.
FRANK POTTER COWAN CRISIS COMMUNICATIONS LEADER, INDIVIDUAL AWARD JAMIE HANSEN, SONOMA COUNTY OFFICE OF EDUCATION Jamie Hansen, a communications specialist with Sonoma County Office of Education, played an integral role in providing critical information to keep agencies and the public informed and moving forward during a time of great crisis in California. Jamie put her crisis communications expertise to use during and after the wildfires of Sonoma County left widespread havoc and uncertainty among the 1,450 students and 250 school employees who lost their homes. Her proactive tactics offered strategic outreach material that informed teachers, counselors, and the public ways in which those impacted by the fires could be supported through resources, including donations, support of school recovery, mental health and more. In the aftermath of the fire, Jamie was lauded for her ongoing work with local schools and districts during recovery and has developed several communication pieces recapping the response that helped the community heal. She holds her Master’s in Journalism from Stanford University and earned in Bachelor of Arts in English from Oberlin College. ABOUT THE FRANK POTTER COWAN CRISIS COMMUNICATIONS LEADER AWARD
