interactions | Body Studies 02
This study looked at an analysis of the posture of the human body in two spaces: an art gallery and a cafe. It was concluded that there can be a categorization of two parties in these spaces, the captive audience and the active audience. From this, it was understood the various head movements and body movements that dictated whether the subject is an active audience member or a captive audience member. The captive audience tends to be more secluded and involved with just the art and nothing else, essentially being captivated by the art. Similarily, in the cafe setting the captive audience generally waited for their drinks while being on their cellphones, again captivated by their cellphone The active audience was not necesseraily uninterested in the art itself, but was more expressive of how they observed the art. For example, reaching out to point at something or discussing art with another active audience member.

Identifying the Captive Audience Study 01 indicates the pattern of use on the site of the captive audience vs the pattern of use of the active public. Essentially identifying their frequent commute around the site and how consist these patterns are. The captive public is characterized as single people or pairs that are generally isolated from their environment in terms of being consciously in the space. Study 02 highlights moments when a person becomes aware that they are in a space and when a person is no longer “captivated.

The Art in Context to the Site Study
Ai Wei Wei is a contemporary artist and activist. As an activist, he brings attention to human rights violation on a massive scale; as an artist, he expands the concept of art to include new forms of social engagement.
In context to Wei Wei’s work -- he has large scale captivating art and sculptures that bring the attention of people to the art through thought provoking themes, this idea of captivating art is the driving factor for the study conducted and the formation of the concept for the art gallery as a means to captivate the people of Marietta.
Wei Wei creates massive works of art that reflect the human scale and allow for people to reflect on the human rights violation he is bringing awareness to.

Subverting Interior and Exterior Spaces As an initial push to the design process, the concept collage questioned “what if the outside was brought inside? The collage essentially became the catalyst for the overall concept of the art gallery, the idea of subverting the relationship between interior and exterior spaces. In order to generate some type of experiential or spatial condition with this idea in mind, the component was developed.

Concept Statement The designed art gallery subverts the relationship between interior and exterior spaces, through a series of moveable panels, the art gallery generates opportunites of varying spatial conditions. With a facade that essentially erodes into the art gallery, this blurred line between what is perceived as “outside” and “inside” is the core of the gallery itself.
