This photography book is a synthesis of the authorial work of Claudia Inostroza, Jorge Pasmiño, Carlos Avello, Cristóbal Barrientos, Sady Mora, Manuel Morales, Nicolás Sáez and Fernando Melo, members of the C/CF collective, and it is the end product of a self publishing and call for entries project undertaken in the city it is named after.

The exhibited works transit through proposals as diverse as photojournalism, landscape as a territory in constant tension by its naturalcultural duality, the portrait and its perceptual alteration of belonging and identity, and living spaces, their construction and destruction, as an inevitable destiny of Concepción.

This photographic set up allows for the coexistence of personal subject matter, with research and also crossings, which in some cases become inevitable given the circumstances and reality the 27F earthquake provoked in the intention and alterity of the priorities, which are evidenced as traces, both of the human and geographic territories, as well as in our generational collective memory.

The photographic project of the collective values visual construction as a fundamentally individual (authorial) product, as well as an enabler of instances of professional projection and of dialogue inscription, counterpoints, but also of a distance between the works, hoping the production of works nourishes from the forms of art, and not only from technological artifice, the routine exercise of a trade or the anxiety and forced search of “the great issues and problematics”.

Este libro de fotografía es una síntesis de la obra autoral de Claudia Inostroza, Jorge Pasmiño, Carlos Avello, Cristóbal Barrientos, Sady Mora, Manuel Morales, Nicolás Sáez y Fernando Melo, integrantes del colectivo C/CF, y es el producto final del proyecto de autoedición y convocatoria llevado a cabo en la ciudad que le da su nombre.

Las obras expuestas transitan por propuestas tan diversas como el foto-reportaje, el paisaje como territorio en constante tensión por su dualidad natural-cultural, el retrato y su alteración perceptual de pertenencia e identidad y los espacios del habitar, su construcción y destrucción, como un inevitable destino penquista.

Este montaje fotográfico permite la coexistencia de temáticas personales, junto a búsquedas y también cruces que, en algunos casos, se hacen inevitables, dadas las circunstancias y realidad que provocó el terremoto del 27F en la intención y alteridad de las prioridades, que se evidencian como huellas tanto en el territorio humano como en el geográfico, al igual que en nuestra memoria colectiva generacional.

El proyecto fotográfico del Colectivo valora la construcción visual como producto fundamentalmente individual (autoral), al mismo tiempo que como posibilitador de instancias de proyección profesional y de inscripción de diálogos, contrapuntos, pero también de distancia entre las obras, esperando que la producción de obra se sustente desde las formas del arte y no únicamente desde el artificio tecnológico, el ejercicio rutinario de un oficio o la ansiedad y búsqueda forzada de los “grandes asuntos y problemáticas”.

¿Habitar haciendo las veces de poeta o de asesino?

To live acting as a poet or a murderer?

Los ensayos de los fotógrafos que aquí se presentan, reunidos por primera vez bajo la rúbrica de Colectivo Concepción Fotográfica, C/CF, comparten vivencias marcadas por condiciones adversas, resultado del obstinado centralismo con que se diseñan las políticas públicas en Chile, y que afectan, desde hace décadas, la vida social y cultural en regiones.

A ello se suman los efectos del terremoto y maremoto ocurridos el 27 de febrero de 2010 — cuyo epicentro se ubicó precisamente en la región donde viven y trabajan los autores—, eventos que a partir de esa fecha han detonado una cadena de réplicas que continúan generando incertidumbre, desplazamientos y extravíos de lo común y de lo familiar subyacente en sus imaginarios.

Si bien cada autor de los que comparecen en esta colección tiene su propio tono, color, timbre y dominio técnico, a todos los une la conciencia común del lenguaje que media y que evita miradas furtivas propias del fotógrafo-cazador. Asimismo, en la obra de cada uno de ellos es posible apreciar un trabajo que presta atención tanto al tiempo como a los procesos de creación. Por otra parte, observamos que ninguno de ellos se deja seducir fácilmente por el photoshop, utilizando prácticas fotográficas contemporáneas, mediante las cuales escenifican diversas estéticas, muchas veces en contradicción, donde diferencia e identidad, utopías y distopías se hacen indiscernibles y donde el pecado de origen de la mirada se escinde entre “lo que vemos y lo que nos mira” (Didi-Huberman: 2006).

Para comenzar, los retratos propuestos por Cristóbal Barrientos pueden ayudarnos a actualizar el duelo de la mirada en los tiempos que asistimos, al enfrentarnos, como espectadores, a la imposibilidad que el autor nos impone de relacionar las identidades de los sujetos retratados, las que, por el contrario, él bien conocería, porque corresponden a miembros

The essays of the eight photographers presented here, collected for the first time under the rubric of the Colectivo Concepción Fotográfica, C/CF, share life experiences marked by the adverse conditions, result of the obstinate centralism with which public policies are designed in Chile, and that, for decades, have affected the regional social and cultural life. Additionally there are the effects of the earthquake and tsunami occurred on February 27, 2010 –whose epicenter was precisely in the region where the authors live and work in–, events that from that date on, have detonated a chain of aftershocks that keep generating uncertainty, displacements and losses of what is common and familiar subjacent in their imageries.

Even if every one of the authors appearing in this collection has his/her own tone, color, timbre and technical dominance, all of them are brought together under a common conscience of the mediating language, avoiding furtive glances proper of the photographer-hunter.

Also, in their respective pieces, it is possible to appreciate a work that pays attention both to time as to the processes of creation. On the other hand, we observe that none of them lets him/herself to be easily seduced by Photoshop, using contemporary photographic practices through which they stage diverse aesthetics, often in contradiction, in which difference and identity, utopias and dystopias become undistinguishable and in which the original sin is the look scinders between “what se see and what looks at us” (Didi-Huberman: 2006).

To begin, the portraits of Cristóbal Barrientos can help us to update the duel of the look in the times we live in, when, as spectators, facing the impossibility the author imposes on us to relate the identities of the portrayed subjects, which, on the contrary he well knew, because they correspond to members of his own nuclear family. This prohibition seems to accuse a crisis of a greater reach, that impels us

to ask ourselves if the individuals behind those sparkling contours are compatible with the singularity of a point of view that unveils the resemblance of the portrayed subjects under the same guiding mandate of painting. Barrientos rather seems to warn us that photography not only buries the pictorial portrait, but that, like the pharaoh, it takes that ideal conception of individuality framed in those manifest features of the personality of the portrayed subject with it to the grave. In contrast, the appearance of these featureless faces reproaches us the presence of inseparable subjects of their historic and social relations, emancipated of physiognomic models or of the information provided by their attitudes, to the point at which their individualities, familiar to the photographer, can not be unveiled to the spectator through simple categorizations of a pre-established social stereotype, like the pictorial portrait tried to achieve in its time.

(Berger: 2006).

On the diametrically opposite side, the two sequences Jorge Pasmiño proposes, Ventanas and Objetos, appeal to ruined spaces, residues and remains left behind by the catastrophe.

The windows he presents us in one of the series seem to reinforce the principle 15th century modern painting inaugurated, according to which the vision of the world is given as representation. The window as a cutout would constitute the order of the autonomous picture, which, thanks to the perspective every photographic apparatus incorporates, be it mechanical or digital, centralizes the glance confirming the dependence of the borders of the frame, exonerating the contingent world.

From there that the things presented in the second sequence, various objects found among the ruins, install themselves in his composition, reinforcing the exemplary quietness of that order obedient to the western ideal inaugurated during the Renaissance by the ocularcentric model (Jay: 2007).

On its part, the photo-report by photographer Manuel Morales is a tribute to the life pulse of an 80-year-old long-time Dichato resident and survivor of the tsunami, Luis Salgado, who was literally left “with his arms crossed”. Maybe having survived many earthquakes in during his life has filled him of the temperance impatient youth ignores. Maybe the stubbornness of

de su propia familia nuclear. Esta prohibición parece acusar una crisis de mayor alcance, que nos impele a preguntarnos si los individuos que hay detrás de esos contornos destellantes son compatibles con la singularidad de un punto de vista que devele el parecido de los sujetos retratados bajo el mismo mandato rector de la pintura. Más bien, Barrientos parece advertirnos que la fotografía no solo sepulta el retrato pictórico, sino que, como el faraón, lleva consigo a la tumba aquella concepción ideal de la individualidad enmarcada en los rasgos manifiestos de la personalidad de los retratados. En contraste, la comparescencia de estos rostros sin rasgos nos enrostra la presencia de sujetos inseparables de sus relaciones históricas y sociales, emancipados de modelos fisonómicos o de la información proporcionada por sus actitudes, hasta el punto que sus individualidades, familiares para el fotógrafo, no pueden ser reveladas al espectador a través de simples caracterizaciones de un estereotipo social preestablecido, tal como intentó conseguir, en su momento, el retrato pictórico (Berger: 2006).

En las antípodas, las dos secuencias que propone Jorge Pasmiño, Ventanas y Objetos encontrados, apelan a espacios arruinados, residuos y despojos dejados por la catástrofe. Las ventanas que nos presenta en una de las series, parecieran reforzar el principio que inaugura la pintura moderna del siglo XV, según el cual la visión del mundo se da como representación. La ventana como recorte construiría el orden del cuadro autónomo, el que gracias a la perspectiva que incorpora todo aparato fotográfico, ya sea mecánico o digital, centraliza la mirada que confirma la dependencia de los bordes del marco, exonerando el mundo contingente. De ahí que las cosas presentadas en la segunda secuencia, variopintos objetos encontrados en medio de las ruinas, se instalan en su composición, reforzando la quietud ejemplar de ese orden obediente al ideario occidental inaugurado en el Renacimiento por el modelo ocularcéntrico (Jay: 2007).

Por su parte, el reportaje del fotógrafo Manuel Morales es un tributo a la pulsión de vida de un antiguo vecino de Dichato de 80 años y sobreviviente del tsunami, Luis Salgado, quien se ha quedado literalmente “de brazos cruzados”. Quizá haber sobrevivido a muchos terremotos en el transcurso

de su vida lo han colmado de la templanza que la impaciente juventud ignora. Quizá la porfía de esas varas de azucenas del final del estío, que contra viento y marea emergen de la tierra agrietada, sea ejemplar y afín a su propio oficio de sastre y al del fotógrafo; afín al de tantos habitantes de este territorio, donde una y otra vez han sido puestos a prueba sus deseos de vivir… Me pregunto qué será de Luis Salgado y de sus azucenas a más de un año del cataclismo.

Sady Mora, en tanto, concibiría al paisaje como “un significado sin definición”, que se emplaza como una vuelta al origen de una escena vaciada de “reflejos de la historia”. La nostalgia de una edad de oro perdida, parecería encontrar alianza con la calma, la estabilidad y monotonía de la composición. El desafío que realiza en varias de las imágenes propuestas, al soslayar las leyes de los tercios, intensificaría la línea del horizonte que divide la porción de cielo y tierra en dos áreas simétricas. Así, solo torres de alta tensión, la presencia de ganado pastando o el fantasma de un árbol solitario alteran el paisaje calmo, apenas vulnerado por el movimiento de las diagonales. Únicamente el curso del agua en su oportunidad dibuja una diagonal, como si el ejercicio de las formas estables fuese una búsqueda técnica del tiempo que se escurre.

La fotografía ha tomado en préstamo la jerarquización de géneros que la Academia estableció para la pintura. Esta jerarquización, creada en el siglo XVII, tuvo su máxima expresión en la Revolución francesa y decayó en el siglo XIX. No obstante, fue durante el siglo XIX, con el establecimiento del Estado-Nación y sus ideales como paradigmas de la independencia, que las academias francesa, italiana y española, en su fase de declive, transmigran a los países del Nuevo Mundo. Paralelamente, con la llegada del primer daguerrotipo, la fotografía hace suya esa categorización heredada de la pintura: historia, escena de género, retrato, paisaje, naturaleza muerta. Claudia Inostroza, la única mujer que integra el Colectivo C/CF, en su propuesta El perdón, se sirve justamente del género más devaluado de esa normativa instaurada por la academia francesa, para conjurar, junto a víctimas de Dichato, Coliumo, Penco, Talcahuano y Llico, un rito mortuorio. La inversión del “adentro”, propio del intimismo del bodegón, nos

those lily-sticks late into the summer, that, against all odds emerge from the cracked earth, is exemplary and close to his own trade as a tailor and photographer; like of so many other inhabitants of this territory, where time and time again, their will to live has been tested… I ask myself what will be of Luis Salgado at the first anniversary of the cataclysm.

Sady Mora, on his part, would conceive landscape as “a meaning without definition”, which is placed as a return to the origin of a scene emptied of “reflections of history”.

Nostalgia of a lost golden age would seem to join forces with the quietness, stability and monotony of the composition. The challenge he takes up in various of the proposed images, would intensify the horizontal line dividing the portion of sky and earth into two symmetric areas, dodging the rule of thirds. Thus, only hightension towers, the presence of cattle grazing, or the ghost of a solitary tree alter the calm landscape, barely damaged by the movement of the diagonals. In its time, only the course of the water draws a diagonal, as if the exercise of the forms was a technical search of passing time.

Photography has borrowed the organization into a hierarchy of genres the academy established for painting. This organization into hierarchies, created in the seventeenth century had its maximum expression in the French revolution and decayed in the nineteenth century. But, during the nineteenth century, with the establishment of the nation-state and its ideals as paradigms of independence, the French, Italian and Spanish academies transmigrate to the new world countries in their declining phase. Parallel to this, with the arrival of the first daguerreotype, photography makes that categorization inherited from paining its own: history, genre scene, portrait, landscape, still life. Claudia Inostroza, the only female member of the Colectivo C/CF, precisely makes use of the most devaluated genre of that normative established by the French academy to conjure, together with the Dichato, Coliumo, Penco, Talcahuano and Llico victims a mortuary rite in her “El Perdón”. The inversion of the “inside”, proper of the intimacy of the still life, displaces us toward the exterior of the rock formations, which serve as altars on which domestic objects rescued from the catastrophe

are placed: the time of the ghetto is running out; the expiation is general.

From a different angle, “Pieza Propia”, by architect Nicolás Sáez shows rooms in different localities in which the watermark the infuriated sea of the tsunami reached in the early hours of February 27 is obstinately signaled by the deictic function these photographs thoroughly fulfill. These marks seem to insist on showing us what is gone, dispossessed, poor, that after this tragedy is made out. The counterpoint to these images of ruined interior spaces build the proposal of a series of images of emergency rooms, half finished and crammed with household equipment, destined to the victims.

In a split second, what is everyday has become uninhabitable and is there now where their supposed inhabitants have nothing left but to inhabit. These images of rooms, portraits in absence we recognize as intimate and familiar spaces, remit us to what is domestic in its devastation and impel us to ask ourselves, together with Freud, how does what is familiar become sinister? Even further: can what is human live there?.

Simultaneously, in “Líneas periféricas y espacios significativos”, Carlos Avello, thanks to his aerial photographs, dramatizes the relations between city and wasteland, between what is inside and what out. The series, repetition of what is identical in a middle class housing complex and the analog series on pine crops left fallowing for future exploitation, with its blocks of the perimeter closing, the same way as it occurred with medieval cities, they enclose the silence of the everyday bursts of the inhabitants protected from the imminent danger coming from the depth of times. These images by Avello lead us to confirm the smothering of what is hyper administered of post modern coexistence, which censors the exiled fluxes in the outside puddles, imposed by the rigorous and at the same time weak cement wall. Then, the wall and its adjacent surroundings tend toward what is excluded and, thanks to that colonization calculated by the elite allow transmitting feelings of security in the unsafe latency of the middle class(es). The overhead point of view the photography of Carlos Avello adopts in this case, seems to question us with these interrogations: “Are we going to again swallow what we vomit?

desplaza hacia el exterior de los roqueríos, los que sirven de altares sobre los que se emplazan objetos domésticos rescatados de la catástrofe: el tiempo del gueto se acaba; la expiación es general.

Desde otro ángulo, Pieza propia, del arquitecto Nicolás Sáez, muestra habitaciones en distintas localidades, donde la marca del nivel hasta donde llegó el mar enfurecido del tsunami, en la madrugada de ese 27 de febrero, está obstinadamente señalizada por la función deíctica que estas fotografías cumplen en su cabalidad. Estas marcas parecen insistir en mostrarnos lo desaparecido, lo desposeído, la pobreza que después de esta tragedia se entrevera.

En contrapunto con estas imágenes de espacios interiores arruinados, construyen la propuesta una serie de imágenes de habitaciones de emergencia, a medio terminar y atiborradas de enseres, destinadas a los damnificados. En un abrir y cerrar de ojos, lo cotidiano se ha vuelto inhabitable y ahora es ahí donde sus supuestos moradores no tienen más remedio que habitar. Estas imágenes de habitaciones, retratos en ausencia que reconocemos como espacios íntimos y familiares, nos remiten a lo doméstico en su devastación y nos impelen a preguntarnos junto a Freud ¿cómo lo familiar deviene siniestro? Más lejos aún: ¿puede lo humano ahí habitar?.

Paralelamente, en Líneas periféricas y espacio significativos, Carlos Avello, gracias a sus fotografías aéreas, dramatiza las relaciones entre ciudad y descampado, el adentro y el afuera. La serie, repetición de lo idéntico en una población de clase media y la serie análoga del cultivo de pinos en barbecho para la futura explotación, con sus bloques del cierre perimetral, del mismo modo como acontecía con las ciudades medievales, encierran el silencio de los estallidos cotidianos de los habitantes, protegidos del peligro inminente de lo posible aún “salvaje”: el temor a lo “otro” retorna lo reprimido que llega desde el fondo de los tiempos. Estas imágenes de Avello nos llevan a constatar el agobio de lo híper administrado de la convivencia posmoderna, que censura los flujos exiliados en los charcos del exterior, impuestos por el riguroso y, al mismo tiempo, feble muro de cemento. Luego, la muralla y sus aledaños tienden hacia lo excluido y, gracias a esa colonización calculada por la elite, permiten transmitir sentimientos de seguridad en la latencia insegura de

la(s) clase(s) media(s). El punto de vista cenital que adopta en este caso la fotografía de Carlos Avello, parece interpelarnos con estos cuestionamientos: “¿Vamos a volver a tragarnos lo que vomitamos? ¿Vamos a volver a esa ciudad-Estado de los orígenes de la política, con los riesgos de la sujeción progresiva de las periferias? ¿O vamos a asentar la superación del Estado-Nación sobre zonas de telecomunicaciones avanzadas, capaces de innovar otros intercambios sociales, otras relaciones públicas, sin avasallar sus grandes suburbios?” (Virilio, 1999: 212).

El campo fotográfico es el espacio representado en la materialidad de la imagen y lo que ahí se presenta es preciso, pero insuficiente para comprender. De ahí su irreductible vínculo con el afuera, su fuera de campo, es decir, con todo aquello que la representación hiere en lo visible, lo que exilia su corte en el tiempo, lo que exonera la tajada de espacio. Esta relación entre lo representado y su “resto” es lo inherente a la fotografía, inserta en el contexto cultural donde se realiza y de sus inacabables condiciones de posibles interpretaciones y sentido(s), en los espacios y tiempos de su recepción contemporánea. Sin embargo, el fuera de campo nada tiene que ver con la res extensa que el cogito cartesiano desea someter como atributo de subjetividad.

Las imágenes editadas de la serie que expone Fernando Melo fueron realizadas durante la madrugada del 27 de febrero de 2010, en el sector rural de Puhaún, en la desembocadura del río Itata, a 30 kilómetros al sur por la costa. Paradójicamente, una hora y media antes del sismo, el fotógrafo había efectuado la última toma en el sitio del epicentro del terremoto. Las intervenciones del paisaje y las imágenes de los caminos por los cuales salieron a buscar refugio los afectados por el tsunami, parecen señalarnos que los ojos ya no nos bastan para entender la complejidad de lo que nos rodea. Debido a esto, la imagen encapsulada en su ventana no nos in/forma de los acontecimientos que modelan el territorio. En cambio, la disposición de líneas materiales en el paisaje que este autor realiza, da cuenta de una marcación territorial, de un régimen específico de identificación, una articulación entre una manera de hacer propia del arte, la forma de visibilidad de ese hacer y la pensabilidad de sus relaciones, esa que determina su participación

The photographic field is represented in the material quality of the image and from there what is presented is precise, but insufficient to comprehend. Hence, its irreducible link with what is outside, its out of field, this is, with everything representation hurts in what is visible, what exiles its court in time, that which exonerates the slice of time. This relation between what is represented and its “remains” is what is inherent to photography, inserted in the cultural context in which it is executed and of its neverending conditions of possible interpretations and meaning(s), in the spaces and times of their contemporary reception. But the out of field has nothing to do with the res extensa the Cartesian cogito wishes to submit as attribute of subjectivity.

The edited images of the series Fernando Melo exhibits were taken during the early morning of February 27, 2010, in the Puhaún rural sector, at the mouth of the Itata river, 30 kilometers south by the coast. Paradoxically, an hour before the tremors, the photographer had executed the last shot at the epicenter of the earthquake. The interventions of the landscape and the images of the roads through which the tsunami victims went out looking for refuge, seem to point out that the eyes are no longer enough to understand the complexity of what surrounds us. Due to this, the encapsulated image in his window in/ forms us of the event modeling the territory. On the other side, the disposition of the material lines in the landscape the author realizes, give account of a territorial marking, of a specific regime of identification, an articulation between a way of doing proper of art, the form of visibility of that doing and the thinkable nature of its relations, the same that determines its political participation in “the distribution of what is sensible”, as Jacques Ranciere proposes (2009).

The compromise with their context and the forms of production exhibited by the C/CF members imply both in their pathos of loss in

their respective proposals, as also in an ethos in what is related to the photographed objects.

Also, all the authors share the challenge of creating essays that, on one side, make of the photographic image a motive for reflection, and on the other, avoid making an invitation to the hypnosis of the mythos, even if they remember that the society of the spectacle announced by Debord, has commuted the events with visual images of a vertiginous consumption and squalid reflection. In that sense, pain does not come from a topic or pretext for them without undertaking a needed withdrawal towards the interior of the photographic language they exercise. Added to this, the photographers brought together on this occasion show a great will to displace the photographed referents toward the language of authorial photography, that prepares to obtain an added value of recognition, the same one that lends itself for intellectual and financial speculation, as with the works of art in today’s global world.

El compromiso con su contexto y las formas de producción expuestas por los miembros del C/CF, conllevan tanto el pathos de la pérdida en sus respectivas propuestas, como también un ethos en lo concerniente a los objetos fotografiados.

Además, todos estos autores comparten el desafío de crear ensayos que, por un lado, hagan de la imagen fotográfica un motivo para la reflexión y, por otro, eviten hacer una invitación a la hipnosis del mythos, aunque tienen presente que la sociedad del espectáculo anunciada por Debord ha conmutado los acontecimientos por imágenes visuales de vertiginoso consumo y escuálida reflexión. En ese sentido, el dolor no resulta un tema o pretexto para ellos sin emprender un debido repliegue hacia el interior del lenguaje fotográfico que ponen en ejercicio. Sumado a esto, los fotógrafos reunidos en esta ocasión demuestran una voluntad de desplazar los referentes fotografiados al lenguaje de la fotografía de autor, que se prepara para obtener una plusvalía de reconocimiento, ese mismo que se presta para la especulación intelectual y financiera, tal como acontece con las obras de arte en el mundo globalizado de hoy.

Un recorrido, a vuelo de pájaro, por las intersecciones entre el crecimiento poblacional, la periferia y el borde de la ribera del Bíobío en la región, marca un lugar de contradicciones, aislamiento y fragilidad frente al espacio determinado, más bien predeterminado, donde los habitantes reconocen su lugar simbólico, como la cancha de fútbol, el pasaje de la pobla, la calle cercana o el atajo. Estos elementos de la vida en regiones (aunque no solo en Chile), llevan a cuestionar, desde la fotografía, cómo se cruzan caminos sin poder parar o intervenir los obligados trayectos de viajes, traslados o disposiciones cardinales que los ciudadanos asimilan día a día, en una trama tipo damero, forzada a expandirse hacia los bordes, empujando junto a las personas, los vicios propios de la modernidad urbana, que empequeñecen el espacio de recreación, la vista panorámica y la referencia amplia.

Cómo habito, dónde y qué me empuja hacia los bordes, son preguntas que inquietan hoy en día a quien pueda cuestionarse.

El espacio inmediato que indican las series, entrega, en detalle fotográfico, un documento de límite exacto de desborde hacia la naturaleza, como si ésta fuera una cáscara que se invade sin contemplación.

Pareciera que la demarcación de esas viviendas niega el acceso hacia una visión de integración humana con la geografía que ofrece la región. ¿Es posible que no nos demos cuenta de como crece la ciudad? ¿Cómo la fotografía de autor abre otra visión para el ciudadano común? Son preguntas que el proyecto Límites y bordes aéreos promueve en un proceso de cuestionamiento constante, desde la convivencia vecinal hasta la percepción geográfica como documento fotográfico.

Como constatan las fotografías, se establece una frontera de peligro: la ciudad avanza y “come” con cierta voracidad los espacios naturales, humedales, orillas de lagunas y del río, entre otros, desplazando especies nativas (por ejemplo, emigración de cisnes, coipos, taguas y ranas). Mi comuna sufre esta frontera de peligro que se va posicionando por un límite de cemento frío y serializado llamado pandereta; justo detrás de ésta, aparece el “terreno de nadie”…

A tour, from a bird’s eye view, of the regional intersections, between the population growth, the periphery and the border of the Bíobío riverbank, marks a place of contradictions, isolation and fragility, facing the determined, rather predetermined, space in which the inhabitants recognize a symbolic place, such as the soccer field, the pobla (población) slum tenement, the nearby street or shortcut. These elements of regional life (but not only in Chile), lead to, from photography, questioning, how roads are crossed without being able to stop or intervene the obligatory journey routes, moves or cardinal dispositions which the citizens assimilate daily, in a checkerboard style trap, forced to expand towards the borders, along with people, pushing the own vices of urban modernity which diminish recreational spaces and the broad reference. As a habit, where and what pushes me towards the borders, are questions that presently trouble those who able to question themselves. The immediate space the series, the delivery, the photographic detail, a document of the exact limit of the overflow towards nature, as if was a shell invaded without contemplation. It would seem that de demarcation of those houses negates access to a vision of human integration with the geography the region offers. Is it possible that we do not realize how the city grows? Or how authorial photography opens another vision for the common citizen? These are questions the Limites y bordes aéreos (aerial borders and limits) project promotes in a process of constant questioning, from neighborly coexistence to geographic perception as photographic document. As the photographs confirm, a border of danger is established: the city advances and with a certain voracity, “eats up” natural spaces, wetlands, lagoon and riverbanks, among others, displacing native species (swan, coypu, tagua -red gartered coots- and frog migration, for instance). My commune suffers this border of danger that gradually positions itself along a limit of cold and serialized cement called bull stretcher; just behind it, the “no man’s land” appears…

Convencionalmente, en un retrato buscamos la identificación, la huella del rasgo, de la característica que compone la idea del sujeto. Se trata de un constructo mental que supone el registro de una figura, una forma principal, una persona como un centro de interés reconocible. I’ll be your mirror propone un desvío de esta convención desde el formato fotográfico de registro de identidad, entregando esta vez un cuerpo que la niega en su totalidad. En esencia, se trata de un autorretrato, el registro de la familia del fotógrafo, a partir de la cual se representa a sí mismo en cuanto miembro de ella y partícipe del registro. Las figuras principales se apropian de un fondo sanguíneo que las une como una sola pieza. Pero no hay rostro, no hay rasgo; en cambio, hay un destello, una luz que oculta o entrega, un reflejo de quien observa la imagen o un ruido que la cuestiona. Si lo entendemos como ruido, en la serie Hotel vemos sujetos bajo la interferencia de desenfoques y superficies opacas. Sujetos que, siendo figuras principales, parecen ceder esa propiedad a lo que los rodea, a una habitación de hotel que los une en el espacio y los alberga como objetos sin expresión ni interacción. El fondo, esta vez, parece tomar mayor importancia como una pista que nos puede dar a entender la razón del registro de las figuras. La historia que parece existir no se deja develar por sí misma, pero hay un camino, un transitar por cada una de las imágenes, que se ve interrumpido por esos obstáculos visuales, así como la misma serie puede ser una pausa en el camino de la interpretación consensuada (un hotel a la manera de estación de viaje).

El ruido como interferencia en la lectura de la imagen, la experimentación de la función de las formas en una inversión de roles en la dualidad figura/fondo, el retrato de uno mismo por el otro, el sujeto como objeto sin acción y sin identidad. Dos trabajos que presentan un punto de vista a partir del experimento y el ruido; un desvío de la convención a partir de la ambigüedad de la razón.

Conventionally, we look for identification in a portrait, the trace of features, of the characteristic that composes the idea of the subject. It is about a mental construct that supposes the registry of a figure, a main shape, a person as a recognizable center of interest.

“I’ll be your mirror“ proposes a detour from this convention of the photographic format of identity registry now delivering a body that totally negates it. Essentially, it is a self-portrait, the registry of the family of the photographer, from which he represents himself as anyone of its members and as a participant of the registry.

The main figures take over a sanguineous background uniting them as one sole piece.

But there is no face, no feature; on the other hand, there is a sparkle, a light that conceals or delivers, a reflection of who is observing the image or a noise questioning it. If we understand it as noise, in the “Hotel” series we see subjects under the interference of soft focuses and opaque surfaces. Subjects who, being main figures, seem to hand over that attribute to their surroundings, to a hotel room uniting them in space and accommodates them as subjects without expression nor interaction.

The background, this time seems to acquire a greater relevance as a clue that can give us to understand the reason for the registry of figures.

The story that seems to exist is unable to be unveiled, but there is a way, a transit by each of the images, which sees itself interrupted by those visual obstacles, as well as the series itself can be a pause in the way to the agreed interpretation (a hotel in the way of a travel station). Noise as interference in the reading of the image, the experience of the function of the forms is an inversion of roles in the figure/background duality, one’s self-portrait by someone else, the subject as an object without action nor identity; two works that present a point of view from the experiment and the noise; a detour from convention from the ambiguity of reason.

Para los fotógrafos, como lo fue en su momento para los pintores impresionistas, la fugacidad del tiempo es un valor estético de profundo arraigo. Por su parte, la fotografía posee cierta latencia mágica que se activa cuando vemos operar una cámara estenopeica, cuando nos encontramos con un buen daguerrotipo, cuando redescubrimos la tridimensionalidad de viejas estereoscopias, ya sea de frente o a contraluz, y cada vez que damos cuenta del conjuro del tiempo en una fotografía hallada accidentalmente.

Para mí —que afortunadamente habito una urbe constituida aún a escala humana— esta fugacidad del tiempo es un fenómeno evidente y la fotografía, la única forma de exorcizarle. Esta urbe que habito es la ciudad de Concepción. De la Inmaculada Concepción de la Virgen, para ser precisos. Su cuadrícula se emplaza principalmente en el valle de la Mocha y para alcanzar su actual extensión se debió rellenar pantanos, dinamitar cerros, desecar lagunas, intervenir ríos…

Camino por mi ciudad como en círculos, respirando y permitiéndome fugas hacia pasados posibles y hacia dentro de mi propio cuerpo, ahora transformado, como mi ciudad, pero a causa de estar siendo habitado por un nuevo ser. En esta deriva es posible encontrar evidencias de cómo se produjo esta metamorfosis del paisaje natural al rural y, finalmente, al urbano. Evidencias dejadas allí, más que por acción voluntaria y consciente, por accidente u omisión.

Al agrandar un poco este círculo, encontramos aquellos paisajes cercanos, semi intervenidos, que no constituyen un atractivo turístico, pero que afectan directamente nuestra calidad de vida. Estos paisajes subsisten a pesar de que cada día nuevas obras intentan sofocarlos. Ampliando el círculo hacia los límites de la región, encontramos paisajes naturales prístinos, que se ven dramáticamente amenazados por grandes proyectos.

Este fenómeno se replica en la región —quizás en todas las regiones del país— en donde la actividad humana y el afán de lucro, tensionan y modifican el paisaje acelerada y arbitrariamente.

La serie Memento está constituida por fotografías de paisajes ubicados en la Región del Biobío, en diferentes condiciones de intervención, pero bajo la misma precariedad, provocada por la presión inmobiliaria, minera, energética, agraria y portuaria.

Estos paisajes alterados en un gesto violento buscan activar algo, mágicamente, antes de ser devorados por Chronos o por la frágil condición de nuestra memoria.

For photographers, as in its time for impressionist painters, the fugacity of time is a deeply rooted aesthetic value. Photography on its part possesses a certain magical latency activated when we see a stenopeic camera operate, when we run into a good daguerreotype, when we rediscover the three dimensionality of old stereoscopies, be it frontal or against the light, and every time we give account of the spell of time in a photograph found accidentally. For me –I fortunately live in a city still constituted on a human scale- this fugacity of time is an evident phenomenon, and photography, the only way of exorcising it. This city I inhabit is Concepción, after the Inmaculada Concepción de la Virgen (immaculate conception of the virgin) to be precise. Its grid is mainly placed in the La Mocha valley and in order to reach its current extension, marshes had to be filled, hills dynamited, lagoons dried, and rivers intervened… I walk through my city as in circles, breathing and allowing myself escapes to possible pasts and within my own body, now transformed, as my city, but due to being inhabited by a new being. In this drifting it is possible to find evidences of how this metamorphosis from natural to rural, and finally urban landscape was produced. Evidences left behind on purpose and consciously, accidentally or by omission. When enlarging this circle a little, we find those nearby landscapes, semi intervened, which do not constitute a tourist attraction, but directly affect our quality of life. These landscapes survive despite new buildings trying to suffocate them daily. Broadening the circle towards the regional limits, we find pristine natural landscapes, which see themselves dramatically threatened by large construction projects. This phenomenon is replicated throughout the region –maybe in all the regions of the country- where human activity and profit motives, tense and modify the landscape rapid and arbitrarily. The Memento series is constituted by photographs of landscapes in the Biobío region, in different conditions of intervention, but under the same precariousness provoked by a pressure for real estate, mining, agriculture, and ports. These landscapes, altered in a violent gesture seek, to activate something, magically, before being devoured by Chronos or by the fragile condition of our memory.

FORMAS DE ALTERIDAD DEL ESPACIO NATURAL Sobre ríos y ruralidad chilena / Forms of alterity of the natural space. On rivers and Chilean rurality

Ríos, cursos de aguas en territorios rurales, de límites imprecisos, que son, más que espacios físicos, “pequeños mundos” donde subsisten y mutan elementos culturales complejos. En este trabajo, la experiencia de permanencia en estos paisajes aislados, permeables, frágiles, es una necesidad y no solo una estrategia. Intento que el proceso de “lo fotográfico” sea permeado por la densidad del territorio.

Son lugares de condición rural, donde, en la situación “fotografía-paisaje”, evito una disposición aséptica que lo limite solo a “locación”. Los viajes y residencias en estos espacios son una experiencia sensorial: caminos, polvo, tierra, humedad, silencios, ruidos nocturnos y también ocasiones de temor y ansiedad.

Me motiva el cariño y nostalgia por el paisaje. Así también, y con menos inocencia, reacciono, en cierta forma, a la condición de periferia que parecieran sustentar estos espacios como campo de trabajo para el arte contemporáneo.

Además, este trabajo busca explorar, desde la serie anterior Formas de alteridad de los espacios naturales, nuevos sentidos y agenciamientos ante el paisaje chileno. En esta proyección convivirían los efectos de la alteridad radical en la materialidad natural producto de la línea, dispuesta realmente en el espacio, junto a la sumatoria de trazos de iluminación artificial y aquellos índices latentes del propio espacio rural, produciendo esta imagen “única” e irrepetible.

Finalmente, la “densidad del territorio” se manifiesta en la forma de paradójica coincidencia que vuelve, involuntariamente, a resignificar la percepción del paisaje desde el arte, debido a que el inicio de esta serie fue realizada en el sector rural de Puhaún, desembocadura del río Itata, durante la madrugada del 27 de febrero de 2010, a pocos kilómetros al sur por la costa del epicentro del sismo, y cuya última toma tuvo lugar a una hora y media del terremoto/tsunami.

Rivers, watercourses in rural territories, of imprecise limits, which are, more than physical spaces, “small worlds” where complex cultural elements survive and mutate. In this work, the experience of permanence in these isolated, permeable, fragile landscapes, is a need and not only a strategy. I intend the “photographic” process to be permeated by the density of the territory.

They are places of a rural condition, where, in the “landscape-photography” situation, I avoid an aseptic disposition limiting it to only a “location”. The journeys and residencies in these spaces are a sensory experience: roads, dust, soil, humidity, nocturnal noises and also occasions of fear and anxiety.

I am motivated by an affection and nostalgia of the landscape. Also, and less innocently, I react in a certain way to the condition of periphery that these spaces would seem to sustain as work field for contemporary art.

Furthermore, this work seeks to explore, since the earlier “Formas de alteridad de los espacios naturales” (forms of alterity of natural spaces) series, new meanings and appropriations of Chilean landscape. In this projection the effects of radical alterity in the natural materiality product of the line, really placed in space, together with the sum of artificial-lighting lines and those latent indexes of the own rural space would coexist, producing this “unique” and unrepeatable image.

Finally, the “density of territory” is manifested in the way of a paradox coincidence that involuntarily goes back to re-signifying the perception of landscape from art, because the beginning of this series was executed in the rural sector of Puhaún, at the Itata river mouth, during the dawn of February 27, 2010, a few kilometers south by the coast of the earthquake epicenter, and whose last shot took place an hour and a half before the earthquake/tsunami.

Registro visual perceptivo, que busca reflejar los diversos estados, significaciones y dimensiones del paisaje periférico, escenario geográfico limítrofe del territorio natural e industrial de la zona. Un registro de escenarios espaciales, cuya materia expresa la existencia de nuevas matrices y significados, los cuales se conceptualizan y adquieren connotaciones cualitativas, que se establecen en una segunda lectura a través de una percepción llevada al terreno de la visibilidad. La imagen se desplaza desde el ícono a la indicación, de la representación a la detección perceptiva. Es el reflejo de los estados de agresión y latencia, de futura intervención y ocupación. Son espacios de transformación y fragmentación a través del tiempo; significaciones ecológicas que reflejan las huellas del avance colonizador hacia nuevos territorios, desde lo industrial hacia sus márgenes naturales, visualizando las silenciosas e invisibles problemáticas medioambientales de un territorio que, a pesar de su extensión e inmensidad, nos revela su fragilidad. Son los territorios cercanos de la supervivencia del mundo natural, donde se advierte el rol de agresor del hombre. Dimensiones críticas, sublimes y esenciales, contenidas en el drama de los elementos del paisaje: tierra, aire, humedad, materia, espacio, tiempo, que conducen al silencio de las expresiones del territorio. La naturaleza está presente, hablándonos, sin dejar que nos estrechemos a ella. Expresiones silenciosas, susceptibles de devenir en escenarios metafóricos y reflexivos, de significados más allá de su definición.

Los horizontes abiertos por las tecnologías recientes reclaman nuevas significaciones ante las definiciones de lo contemporáneo, en respuesta a la existencia de nuevos escenarios posibles y alternativos.

Esta visión canalizó una obra de síntesis, enfocando la solemnidad y crudeza del espacio, sugiriendo la detención reflexiva en terrenos cercanos y, a la vez, invisibles. Una construcción de fragmentos secuenciados, en contraposición espacial y en continuidad semántica, que da cuenta de un todo por sus partes. Un factor fundamental en el registro fue la detenida observación del territorio y las transformaciones atmosféricas que experimenta, bajo condiciones climatológicas de humedad e inestabilidad, elementos propicios para una expresión intensa y cercana a los códigos del universo natural, cuyo vacío, extensión y dimensión da forma al sentimiento de expectación y silencio ante los territorios del paisaje limítrofe.

A visual perceptive register, that seeks to reflect the diverse states, significations and dimensions of peripheral landscape, a bordering geographical scenario of the natural and industrial territory of the region. A register of spatial scenarios, whose matter expresses the existence of new matrixes and meanings, which are conceptualized and acquire qualitative connotations which establish themselves in a second reading through a perception taken to the territory of visibility. The image is displaced from the icon to the indication, of perceptual representation and detection. It is the reflection of the states of aggression and latency, of future intervention and occupation. They are spaces of transformation and fragmentation through time; ecologic significations that reflect the traces of the colonizing advance towards new territories, from what is industrial towards its natural margins, visualizing the silent and invisible environmental issues of a territory that, despite its extension and immensity, reveals us its fragility. They are the territories close to the survival of the natural world, where the aggressive role of man can be noticed. Critical, sublime and essential dimensions, contained in the drama of the elements of landscape: soil, air, humidity, matter, space, time, which lead to the silence of the expression of the territory. Nature is present, addressing us without letting us squeeze ourselves near it. Silent expressions, susceptible of becoming metaphorical and reflexive scenarios, of meanings beyond their definition. The horizons opened by recent technologies claim new meanings facing the definitions of what is contemporary, as a response to the existence of new possible and alternative scenarios.This vision channeled a work of synthesis, focused on the solemnity and crudeness of space, suggesting the reflexive detention on nearby, and also invisible lands. A construction of sequenced fragments, in spatial counter position and semantic continuity, that gives account of a whole by its parts. A fundamental factor in the register was the detained observation of the territory and the atmospheric transformations it undergoes under climatic conditions of humidity and instability, elements favorable to an intense expression close to the codes of the natural universe, whose vacuum, extension and dimension gives shape to the feeling of expectation and silence facing the territories of the bordering landscape.

Esta muestra fotográfica es una selección de un trabajo ejecutado durante un año en la Región del Biobío, a partir de los primeros días de marzo de 2010. Fue realizado bajo una estética documentalista y muestra los procesos de adaptación de personas y familias que se vieron expuestas al devastador terremoto y tsunami ocurridos en febrero. Entre ellos destaca Luis Salgado, habitante de la comuna de Dichato, quien a sus 80 años cuenta con la vivencia de cinco terremotos y fue protagonista de la serie Terremoto de-sastre, primera parte de este trabajo. (Hoy, sin embargo, a un año de los hechos ocurridos, Luis Salgado ya no tiene la entereza que apreciábamos en las primeras fotografías, pues su salud se ha complicado y siente que ha perdido su vida injustamente).

Un factor determinante para poder entrar en la intimidad de la gente es el tiempo. Un año de visitas, de compartir y de ser testigos de los procesos vividos, permitió abrir espacios cotidianos, sin recurrir a la pose o a forzar situaciones. Dos cosas llaman la atención en las fotografías: por una parte, la intimidad develada, ya que el nuevo escenario de la región obligaba a ocupar y compartir lugares para vivir, convirtiendo la vida privada en pública y, por otra, la alegría espontánea de mucha gente a pesar de lo ocurrido y la inmensa incertidumbre que se vivía.

En este caso, además de documentar un importante momento histórico, la fotografía sirvió como instrumento para canalizar ayudas de instituciones internacionales, dando cuenta del daño producido en muchas localidades. Fue así como cientos de personas y familias se vieron favorecidas con diversos aportes como baños, botes y viviendas, los cuales permitieron mejorar sus condiciones de vida y recuperar su fuente de ingresos.

This photographic exhibition is a selection of a work executed for a year in the Región del Biobío, starting the first days of March 2010. It was undertaken under a documentary aesthetic and shows the adaptation processes of people and families who saw themselves exposed to the devastating earthquake and tsunami occurred in February. Among these, Luis Salgado, an inhabitant of the Dichato commune, who, at his 80 years of age has lived through five earthquakes, and was the main character of the “Terremoto de-sastre” (earthquake di-saster, with sastre being tailor in spanish) series, the first part of the present work, stands out.

(Today, nonetheless, a year after the events, Luis Salgado does no longer have the composure we appreciated in the first photographs, since his health has complicated and he feels that he has unfairly lost his life).

A determining factor to be able to enter people’s intimacy is time. A year of visits, of sharing and being witnesses of the lived processes allowed opening everyday spaces without recurring to posing or forcing situations. Two things are remarkable in the photographs: on one part, the unveiled intimacy, since the new scenario of the region forced occupying places to live, turning private life in public, and on the other, the spontaneous joy of many people despite what happened and the immense uncertainty experienced.

In this case, besides documenting an important historical moment, photography served as an instrument to channel help from international institutions, giving account of the damage occurred in many localities. It was like this that hundreds of people and families saw themselves favored with diverse contributions such as restrooms, boats and houses, which allowed them to improve their life conditions and recuperating their source of income.

Considero la fotografía un instrumento visual, cuyo valor radica en establecer conexiones entre la vida y el arte. Desde esa perspectiva me he acercado a los acontecimientos, constatando en la geografía costera, en las personas y en el hábitat, los acontecimientos post-sismo (27/F).

Las imágenes nos sitúan en la intimidad del hogar vacío, en la seguridad de la morada que fue vulnerada por los sucesos conocidos. El modelo de imagen (por el momento), es un pretexto para mostrar un fragmento de lo acontecido, como quien abre la ventana para ver una panorámica del entorno o el interior de la morada vacía. Al igual como ocurre con la cámara, la ventana re-encuadra, nos dirige la mirada y nos obliga a presenciar ese velado desastre, pero ahora desde lo cotidiano, no desde la espectacularidad de la fotografía de prensa.

Por ahora, mi intención es continuar hacia una idea personal de paisaje, como son los espacios deshabitados, donde lo que encapsule la cámara sea, antes que todo, un registro de la memoria. Mi interés forma parte del enigma por la atracción que provocan determinados lugares abandonados, donde la elección concreta de los objetos y los espacios observados está permeada por la reflexión, donde la intuición y la memoria desempeñan un importante ejercicio introspectivo.

Las ruinas sirven como recordatorios, así como los objetos, álbumes fotográficos, libros. Sin embargo, esos objetos, ahora carentes de dueños, pronto desaparecerán. Son tesoros que incitan a la reflexión, son recordatorios humanos, son nuestros nexos con lo que vino antes, nuestros guías para situarnos en un espacio de tiempo.

Por ahora, me quedo con la idea y carga subjetiva del objeto encontrado o de los espacios vacíos, abandonados por la fuga de su(s) dueño(s) ante el peligro inminente, que son como un fatal recordatorio de un gran suceso natural. También me quedo con la declaración de Nietzsche, puesto que, como él, creo que la actividad habitual del ojo consiste en resbalar por la superficie de las cosas sin superar el ámbito de las sensaciones inmediatas, pero el artista debe ver más y, sobre todo, mejor, aun a sabiendas de que la visión, artística o común, es algo impreciso.

I consider photography a visual instrument, whose value lies in establishing connections between life and art. From that perspective I have approached the situation, confirming the (2/27) post-earthquake events in people and the habitat along the coastal geography.

The images place us in the intimacy of the empty home, in the security of the house that was harmed by the events. The image model is (for the moment) a pretext to show a fragment of what took place, as someone who opens the window to see a panoramic of the surroundings or the interior of the empty house. The same as with the camera, the window re-frames, it directs us to the glance and makes of presence this veiled disaster, but now from the everyday, not what is spectacular about press photography.

For now my intention is to continue towards a personal idea of landscape, as are uninhabited spaces, where what the camera encapsulates is, before anything else, a register of memory.

My interest forms part of the enigma of the attraction determined abandoned places produce, where the concrete selection of the observed objects and spaces is permeated by reflection, where intuition and memory play an important introspective exercise.

Ruins serve as reminders, the same as objects, photography albums, books. Nonetheless these objects, now devoid of owners, will soon disappear. They are treasures that incite reflection, human reminders, our nexuses with what was there before, our guides to place ourselves in a space of time.

For now, I stay with the idea and subjective load of the found object or of empty spaces, abandoned by the escape of its/their dream(s) facing imminent danger, that are like a fatal reminder of a great natural event. I also stand by Nietzsche’s statement, since, like him, I believe that the activity of the eye consists of sliding on the surface of things without recuperating the immediate feelings, but the artist has to see more, and above all, better, even while knowing that vision, artistic or common, is imprecise.

El habitar humano presupone una eterna tensión entre la vida o la existencia humana y el soporte que la contiene. Su estructura material e inmaterial debe su existencia a la presencia de la vida humana en toda su complejidad. Luego del terrible episodio del 27 de febrero del 2010, el habitar del borde costero de la Región del Biobío fue violentamente transgredido y, en muchos casos, transferido a un nuevo asentamiento de emergencia. Primero se decide entrar en aquellas habitaciones privadas o pequeños espacios comerciales que lograron mantenerse en pie sin sucumbir por la violencia del mar, a diez o veinte días luego del suceso. Trabajo fotográfico con carácter de urgencia en el que se deseó perpetuar la apariencia que exhibían aquellos espacios marcados por el mar. Segundo, se fotografía el interior de las moradas de emergencia.

Hoy existen 3.260 familias en la Región del Biobío habitando en piezas de una superficie de 18 metros cuadrados. Tanto los que lo perdieron todo a consecuencia de la catástrofe, como también algunos que no contaban con un lugar propio para vivir, que se sumaron al ofrecimiento del gobierno de turno, dan continuidad a sus vidas en estas nuevas habitaciones, de obvia precariedad arquitectónica, intentando ajustarse al creciente devenir de las necesidades elementales del vivir humano. Haber entrado en diversas moradas de emergencia, en distintas localidades costeras de la región (Dichato, Coliumo, Coronel, Punta Lavapié, Llico y Tubul), significa haber estado en espacios domésticos increíblemente acogedores, decorados por mujeres dueñas de casa con sorprendente habilidad, logrando una buena respuesta de lo que se podría llamar una elemental forma de habitar. El hogar hecho forma alcanza una intensidad inusual en estas pequeñas moradas temporales; pareciera que lo mínimo no impide crear una atmósfera de habitabilidad confortable y que cuando esto ocurre, el habitar está por sobre la propia habitación. Como en una caja de Pandora, la sorpresa y lo valioso se encuentran adentro. Pieza propia es un trabajo fotográfico que desea enaltecer este descubrimiento. En este caso, el habitar humano cobra protagonismo por la forma de vida y no por su soporte construido o forma debida. La propiedad, como anhelo, queda determinada por la voluntad irascible de habitar, aun cuando todos sabemos que esta última vuelve a quedar suspendida en la incertidumbre.

Naturaleza y naturaleza humana siguen su curso.

Human residence presupposes an eternal tension between life or human existence and the support that contains it. Its material and immaterial structure owes its existence to the presence of human life in all of its complexity.

After the terrible February 27, 2010 episode, the coastal border residence of the Biobío Region was violently transgressed and in many cases, transferred to a new emergency settlement. First it was decided to enter those private rooms or small commerce spaces that managed to survive without succumbing to the violence of the sea, ten or twenty days after the event. A photographic work of an urgent character in which the aim was to perpetuate the appearance those spaces marked by the sea exhibited. Secondly, the interior of the emergency housing is photographed.

There are 3.260 families in the Región del Biobío today inhabiting 18 square meter rooms. Both those who lost everything as a consequence of the catastrophe, as well as some who did not have a proper living space, who adhered to the offer by the current government, give continuity to their lives in those new rooms, of an obvious architectural precariousness, trying to adjust to the growing transformation of the elemental needs of human life. Having entered diverse emergency housings, in different coastal localities in the region (Dichato, Coliumo, Coronel, Punta Lavapié, Llico and Tubul), means to have been in incredibly cozy domestic spaces, decorated by housewives with a surprising ability, managing a good response of what could be called an elemental way of inhabiting. The homes made form reach an unusual intensity in these small and temporary dwellings; it would seem that what is minimal does not prevent the creation of an atmosphere of comfortable habitability and that when this occurs the inhabitation is above the room itself. As in a Pandora’s box, surprises and what is valuable meet inside. “Pieza propia” is a photographic work that seeks to praise this discovery. In this case, human inhabiting reaches a prominence by the way of life and not by its build support of proper form. Property as an aspiration is detained by the irascible will to inhabit, even when we all know that the latter is again suspended in uncertainty. Nature and human nature follow their course.

La imagen fotográfica es en sí abarcadora, pues se ocupa de varias situaciones simultáneamente. No solo es reflejo de lo que somos, sino que puede ser permeable, manipulable o simplemente un vaso comunicante entre el individuo y su existencia.

Podríamos hablar del artificio de la imagen, dado que toda imagen es en sí un disimulo. Esto significa que los géneros fotográficos ya no tendrían mayor relevancia, ya que lo importante sería la imagen en sí y cómo ésta circula, cómo se constituye en “información” legible, comprensible o influenciable.

Es ahí donde el acto fotográfico se convierte en lo relevante, porque necesita no solo del estar ahí, sino también de la valoración del pensamiento, del gesto, al igual que del encuadrar y disparar algo específico para hacerlo circular. Es decir, el fotógrafo pasaría a ser el real protagonista de la imagen, mientras que el sistema de circulación actuaría como estrategia de visibilidad y de postura ideológica. Esto, porque los medios donde habitan y circulan las imágenes, cargan un planteamiento político, social, cultural (poético). El concepto de identidad estaría, entonces, irrevocablemente relacionado con lo político y lo doméstico, lo cual significa que existirían múltiples identidades.

Es por ello interesante poder dialogar con los integrantes del CCF, puesto que la producción de obra y los sistemas de circulación que han autogestionado y liderado desde Concepción son fundamentales para reflexionar acerca de la visualidad chilena.

The photographic image is in itself embracing, since it looks after various situations simultaneously. It is not only the reflection of who we are, but can also be permeable, malleable or simply a communicating vessel between the individual and his/her existence.

We could speak of the artifice of the image, since every image is in itself make-believe. This means the photographic genres would no longer have a major relevance, since the important thing would be the image in itself and how it circulates, how it is constituted into legible, comprehensible or easily influenced “information”. It is there that the photographic act turns into what is relevant, because it needs to not only be there, but also the valuation of the thought, the gesture, the same as framing and shooting something specific in order to circulate it. This is, the photographer would go on to be the real protagonist of the image, while the system of circulation would act as a strategy of visibility and ideological posture; this, because the environments images inhabit and circulate in carry a political, social, cultural (poetic) approach. The concept of identity would then be irrevocably related with what is political and domestic, which means there would be several identities.

That is why it is interesting to be able to dialogue with the CCF members, since the production of works and the systems of circulation they have self-managed and lead from Concepción are fundamental in order to reflect on Chilean visuality.

This collective was formed in August 2008 as a consequence of a contemporary photography workshop the Photography Area of the National Council for Culture and the Arts (Consejo

AJ: Lo primero que me interesa preguntarles es si el trabajo colectivo es una estrategia de visibilidad o un sistema de generación de contenidos.

NS: Todo lo que se ha logrado no está necesariamente planificado: es consecuencia del decidir, conversar y hacer fotografía de forma colectiva. Dicha cultura autoinfringida va formando nuestra voluntad fotográfica, perfeccionándonos. Ahora, cuando ya han ocurrido varios hechos de visibilidad, la pregunta sobre el contenido de cada trabajo fotográfico ha tomado un peso, lo suficientemente claro, como para darle prioridad al momento de generar nuevos trabajos. Creo que la colectividad es un hecho afortunado, por sobre los hechos individuales.

FM: Pero sin duda existe una estrategia de visibilidad; ello nos ha permitido participar de eventos importantes e invitaciones curatoriales como Humedales, en el Museo Nacional de Bellas Artes de Santiago, Muro Chile en Shangai, Feria de Arte Contemporáneo Ch.ACO 2010 o en la Cuarta Bienal Internacional de Beijing, por citar algunos. Mientras que la generación de contenido es esencial; es uno de los esfuerzos principales del CCF. La prueba de ello es que hemos realizado tres talleres en modalidad de claustro, con bases metodológicas y didácticas, alejados de la ciudad, en Hualqui, Quillón, Casa Poli y Coliumo.

The CCF, together with other initiatives such as the Regional Photography Board (Mesa de Fotografía Regional), have undertaken an initiative around photography in the Biobío Region. This has meant for them a deserved, even if late, recognition (as it often happens in a country as centralized as Chile). The associative labor specifically undertaken by the CCF position Concepción as a reference point for photography, both on a regional and shortly national level.

This interview does not aim to reflect on the work of the photographers considering there are other theoretical texts in this publication taking charge of that issue, but simply means to be a source of direct documentation, in order to learn of their reflections, convictions, and occasionally, their uncertainties.

AJ: The first thing I am interested in asking you is if collective work is a strategy of visibility or a system for the generation of content.

NS: Everything that has been achieved has not necessarily been planned: it is a consequence of deciding, having talks and photographing collectively. That self infringed culture goes on to shape our will of photography, perfecting ourselves. Now, that various facts of visibility have already occurred, the question of how the content of each photographic work has acquired a weight, clear enough to assign priority to the moment of generating new works. I believe that collective work is a fortunate fact, above individual facts.

FM: But there is a strategy of visibility, without a doubt; it has allowed us to take part of important events and curatorial invitations such as Humedales at the Museum of Fine Arts in Santiago, Muro Chile in Shangai, the 2010 Ch.ACO International Contemporary Art Fair or the fourth International Beijing Biennale, to name a few. Meanwhile, the generation of content is essential; it is one of the main efforts of the CCF. Evidence of it is that we have conducted three cloister modality workshops, with methodological and didactic foundations, away from the city, in Hualqui, Quillón, Casa Poli and Coliumo.

El CCF, en conjunto con otras iniciativas, como la Mesa de Fotografía Regional, ha llevado a cabo una movilización en torno a la fotografía en la Región del Biobío. Esto les ha significado un reconocimiento merecido aunque tardío (como muchas veces sucede en un país tan centralizado como Chile). La labor asociativa realizada específicamente por el CCF, posiciona a Concepción como punto de referencia para la fotografía, tanto a nivel regional —y no demorará en serlo— como nacional.

Esta entrevista no pretende reflexionar en torno a la obra de los fotógrafos, considerando que existen otros textos teóricos en esta publicación que se hacen cargo de aquello, sino que simplemente desea ser una fuente de documentación directa, para conocer sus reflexiones, sus convicciones y, a veces, sus incertidumbres.

AJ: ¿Cómo se inicia cada uno de ustedes en la fotografía y por qué la opción de este soporte para la creación?

AJ: How were each of you initiated in photography, and what is the reason of the choice for this support for creation?

MM: Después de trabajar 10 años como productor técnico en cine publicitario en Santiago, me surgen las ganas de ser asistente de cámara y, como no había puestos vacantes, tomé la cámara fotográfica y salí a caminar. Luego conocí a José Miguel Varas, editor en ese entonces de la revista Rocinante, donde comienza mi trabajo profesional.

CI: Recuerdo que mi primera cámara fotográfica fue un regalo de cumpleaños que recibí al cumplir los 14 o 15 años. Era una Zenit. Así que mi primer acercamiento fue intuitivo. Luego mi padre me facilitó unas revistas que editaba la Kodak, sobre cómo hacer “buenas” fotografías. Seguí con eso hasta que la cámara falló. Más tarde entré a estudiar comunicación audiovisual.

NS: Al entrar a estudiar arquitectura se detonó mi fascinación por las imágenes. Mi primera cámara la compré al tercer año de estudios, luego vino la ampliadora y la siguiente necesidad de habilitar un cuarto oscuro. Realicé diaporamas, fotonovelas y algunas exposiciones al interior de mi escuela.

Durante mi formación siempre me pregunté cómo la fotografía de las obras de arquitectura que estudiaba, casi todas extranjeras, podría entregarme alguna “verdad”. Sin la posibilidad de visitarlas, debía comprenderlas a través del ejercicio visual, planimétrico y fotográfico. Hoy tengo la certeza que solo la experiencia permite aspirar a algún conocimiento sustraído del mundo de los hechos o de lo hecho. De aquí nace una fotografía que contiene una gran “verdad” de la obra o una gran mentira. La fotografía la entiendo como un lenguaje de representación.

SM: Me inicié en la fotografía en el transcurso de mi infancia, buscando tener en la ciudad un fragmento del campo, en donde sentía mi pertenencia. En aquellas estadías rurales quise registrar mis espacios de tránsito con una sencilla cámara AGFA que se encontraba en el lugar: el resultado fue una imagen velada, de tenues siluetas del follaje. Aquello no lo esperaba; aun así, la imagen reflejaba lo que yo percibía. Aquella sensación, de sorpresa revelada, en que te apropias de un lugar en el tiempo, me llevó a relacionarme con el artefacto que lo hacía posible,

MM: After working as a technical producer in advertising cinema in Santiago for 10 years, I started to take an interest in being a camera assistant, and, as there were no openings, I took the photographic camera and went out for walks. Then I met José Miguel Varas, at the time editor for Rocinante magazine, where my professional work began.

CI: I remember that my first photographic camera was a birthday present I received when I turned 14 or 15 years old. It was a Zenit. So my first approach was intuitive. Then my father gave me access to some magazines published by Kodak on how to take “good” photographs. I kept on with this until the camera broke down. Later I started studying audiovisual communication.

NS: When I started studying architecture my fascination for images appeared. I bought my first camera three years into my studies, then the enlarger and the next need was to implement a dark room. I made slideshows, photo novels and had some exhibitions at my school. During my academic formation, I always asked myself how the photography of the architectural works I was studying, almost all of them foreign, could deliver me some “truth”. Without the possibility of visiting them, I had to understand them from the visual, planimetric and photographic exercise. Today I have the certainty that only experience allows aspiring to some knowledge away from the world of facts or what has been done. From this comes a photography that contains a great “truth” about the work, or a great lie. I understand photography as a language of representation.

SM: I took up photography during childhood, seeking to, in the city, have a fragment of the countryside, where I felt I belonged. During those rural stays I wanted to register my spaces of transition with a simple AGFA camera I found there: the result was a veiled image, of faint silhouettes of foliage. That was unexpected; even so, the image reflected what I perceived.

That feeling, or revealed surprise, in which you take over a place in time, lead me to relate to the artifact which made it possible, on my own, without interference from others; you could learn on your own and see how the accumulation of these images began to speak of the meaning of

your own existence.

JP: My first attempts in the field of photography happened during the nineteen eighties, as an art student, with photography and cinematographic culture professor Enrique Eiler Moore. With him and other authors we undertook various field trips to the Región de La Araucanía coastal border and held several group and solo exhibitions. Later I retook my work in painting, as well as teaching. The practice of photography became more sporadic, with purposes more related to the registry of paintings. During my Mexican study period (2002-2002) I returned to documental photography work. I consider photography as an effective means to activate reality and thought. As a visual instrument, it allows me to establish connections between life and art…

CA: The encounter with photography is consequence of a thesis I undertook in Mexico, during which I had to teach a technological means of communication, in some rural or indigenous community. Due to my formation in the plastic arts, I researched pictorial means and keeping the Mexican school very present, I progressively assumed the means received during my formation at the Centro de la Imagen workshops. After many encounters with other photographers I understood that the means opens up the door for creation: on one hand it facilitates the ethnographic registry as fieldwork, and on the other, it demands a great theoretical and technical dedication.

CB: In my case, I am not very sure this has been a choice, since my father photographed a lot since I can remember, with one camera first, and then collecting them. When I was approximately 10 years old he gave me a basic telemetric camera… after a break, I retook photography, but this time with far greater technical control, developing my own film and printing in my laboratory. It became natural then that this means decided for me when the time came to assume a creative support.

FM: When I was approximately 9 or 10 years old, with borrowed cameras, homemade enlargers; as a game, with an absolute lack of schooling or guidance. As an option for a language, it was after graduating in visual arts, and 9 years dedicated to painting. A choice that became clearer after a trip to de Mexican federal district in 1994, where the Centro de la Imagen had just

individualmente, sin la intervención de los demás; podías aprender solo y ver cómo la acumulación de estas imágenes comenzaba a hablar del sentido de tu existencia.

JP: Mis primeros tanteos en el campo de la fotografía fueron en la década de los ochenta, como estudiante de artes plásticas, con el profesor de Fotografía y Cultura Cinematográfica Enrique Eiler Moore.

Junto a él y otros autores realizamos varias salidas en el borde costero de la Región de La Araucanía e hicimos varias exposiciones colectivas e individuales.

Posteriormente, retomé el trabajo de la pintura, junto a la docencia. La práctica de la fotografía se hizo más esporádica, con fines más bien de registro para la pintura. Durante mi estadía de estudio en México (2000-2002) regresé al trabajo de la fotografía documental. Considero la fotografía como un medio efectivo para activar la realidad, el pensamiento.

Como instrumento visual, que permite establecer conexiones entre la vida y el arte…

CA: El encuentro con la fotografía es consecuencia de una tesis que realicé en México, donde debía enseñar un medio tecnológico de comunicación, en alguna comunidad rural o indígena. Por mi formación desde las artes plásticas, investigué sobre medios pictorialistas y, teniendo la Escuela Mexicana tan presente, voy asumiendo el medio y formándome en los talleres del Centro de la Imagen.

Después de tantos encuentros con otros fotógrafos, comprendo que el medio te abre la puerta a la creación: por una parte facilita el registro etnográfico como trabajo de campo y, por otro, te exige gran dedicación teórica y técnica.

CB: En mi caso, no estoy muy seguro que haya sido una opción, debido a que mi padre fotografiaba mucho desde que tengo memoria, siempre con una cámara y luego coleccionándolas. Cuando tenía aproximadamente 10 años me regaló una Básica Telemétrica... Luego de un momento de pausa, volví a retomar la fotografía, pero esta vez con mucho más control técnico, revelando mis propias películas y positivando en mi laboratorio. Se hacía natural, entonces, que fuera este medio el que decidiera por mí, a la hora de asumir un soporte de creación.

FM: Alrededor de los 9 o 10 años, con cámaras prestadas, ampliadoras caseras; como un juego, con absoluta falta de escuela y guía. Como opción de lenguaje, fue después de titularme de artes visuales

y de 9 años dedicado a la pintura. Opción que se aclaró luego de un viaje a México D.F., en 1994, donde estaba recién fundado el Centro de la Imagen.

La consecuencia de leer y ver lo publicado ahí y el desencantamiento de la pintura, me hicieron optar.

AJ: Pasando a otro tema, Alejandro Castellote (2008) dice que en la actualidad se apunta a la disolución de los centros y que este escenario merece introducir las utopías éticas como horizonte común. Siendo ustedes de Concepción, en un país centralizado, ¿están de acuerdo con esta postura? ¿Existe un sistema de circulación y de visibilidad que se esté generando?

NS: Personalmente siempre he sentido una fascinación por lo periférico. Aquello que queda en el límite de lo “políticamente correcto”. Centralizar involucra necesariamente seleccionar, sintetizar y, naturalmente, desechar. Creo que desde lo periférico, desde lo desechado, se perciben de mejor manera ciertas verdades del ser humano, en donde todo es y nada sobra, ya que desde aquí se integran la diversidad de componentes, sin desechar. Esto último tiene todo que ver con una ética íntegramente humana y ciertamente utópica.

La ciudad de Concepción no es el mejor ejemplo de descentralidad, pero desde aquí basta para percibir la gran distancia que existe con el gran centro de poder.

Por lo mismo, creo en los sistemas autogeneradores.

La visibilidad es solo la consecuencia de la producción desde adentro de dichos sistemas, ya que los centrales se alimentan de lo periférico, cansados de estar siempre viéndose el ombligo.

CI: Introducir utopías éticas, como horizonte común, debiera ser una prerrogativa esencial de la sociedad: que nutra y dé sentido al hecho mismo de vivir en ella y que propicie el cambio social. Siempre es necesario hacer ciertos alcances como dónde se construye esa utopía, a quiénes se les cede la palabra, con qué coherencia se establece la práctica de los principios, etc. La simbiosis se da a nivel de mutuo aprendizaje, al entrar en contacto con estas otras realidades que enriquecen la nuestra, aportando instancias de acceso en el campo de la fotografía. Básicamente, otro mundo es posible.

CB: Por el momento, la circulación de obra está centralizada en Santiago y los intentos por hacer

AJ: Going on to another topic, Alejandro Castellote (2008) says that the dissolution of the centers is currently being aimed at and that this scenario deserves to introduce utopian ethics as a common horizon, do you agree with that position? Is there a system of circulation being generated?

NS: Personally, I have always felt a fascination for what is peripheral. That which is at the limit of what is “politically correct”. Centralizing necessarily involves selecting, synthesizing, and naturally, discarding. I believe that from the periphery, from what is discarded, certain truths of humans are better perceived, in which everything is and nothing is left over, since from here the diversity of components is integrated without being discarded. The latter has everything to do with an integrally and certainly utopian human ethics. The city of Concepción is the best example of decentralization, but from here it is enough to receive the great distance there is from the great center of power. For the same reason I believe in self-generating systems.

Visibility is only the consequence of production from within these systems, since the centers feed off the periphery, tired of always being absorbed in itself.

CI: Introducing utopian ethics, as a common horizon, should be an essential prerogative of society: let it nourish and assign sense to the fact itself of living in it, favoring social change.

It is always necessary to establish certain implications such as where this utopia is built, who should be given the floor, with what kind of coherence the practice of principles is established, etc. The symbiosis occurs on a level of mutual learning, while entering into contact with these other realities that enrich ours, contributing instances of access in the field of photography.

Basically, another world is possible.

CB: For the moment, the circulation of the work is centralized in Santiago and the intents of making visibility a more transversal issue have been the result of self-management. Ethically, I feel the process of circulation should be more rhizomatic, but there is the problem of what is institutional versus what is marginal, a

AJ: En Latinoamérica existe una amplia tradición dentro de la fotografía documental, fotografía que habla sobre nuestras diferencias, como dice Morales Carrillo, sobre la variedad, las violentas y silenciosas transformaciones que hicieron posible hablar sobre “lo latinoamericano”. ¿Creen que la fotografía realizada en Chile tiene una identidad?

SM: Nuestro país posee una diversidad geográfica y cultural que construye realidades diversas. A partir de esto, es complejo hablar de una identidad nacional, salvo por una coyuntura histórica. Percibo identidades regionales, como la zona costera industrial del Biobío o las estepas solitarias de Magallanes. De esta forma, la fotografía va reflejando esta condición en su mensaje. Sin embargo, lo que percibo en la actualidad es un riesgoso seguimiento de referentes internacionales en el contenido y forma de hacer fotografía.

JP: Durante décadas, Chile ha sido un laboratorio de experimentos artísticos, políticos, económicos, sociales. En la medida que esto sea reconocido, seremos más libres al mirarnos en imágenes del pasado y las actuales. Pero antes debemos dejar de lado las comparaciones con otras culturas latinoamericanas, asumir nuestra realidad sin complejos, que sea el punto de partida para la construcción de esa tan esquiva identidad cultural.

CA: Latinoamérica tiene una raíz común en su génesis y movimientos sociales. Pues bien: nosotros

dependant relationship that defines them as such: there cannot be one without the other. But both have a special power of action from their own fields. For instance, marginality can use the institution or what is academic to, from it, freely question it. The institution, from its own pedestal, possesses a captive audience and the support of the academy to consider what is marginal, or not. The paradox is created at the moment in which what is marginal enters the academic field and ceases to be marginal.

SM: I think the horizon has to be the ideological decentralization towards a diversity of proposals, of ideas.

AJ: There is a broad tradition within documentary photography in Latin America, a photography that speaks of our differences, as Morales Carrillo says, on the variety, the violent and silent transformations which made it possible to speak of what is “Latin-American”. Do you think that Chilean photography has an identity?

SM: Our country has a geographical and cultural diversity that builds diverse realities.

From this, it is complex to speak of a national identity, except for a critically historical situation. I perceive regional identities, such as the costal industrial Bíobío region, or the solitary Magallanes steppes. In this way, photography goes on to reflect this condition in its message.

But, what I currently perceive is a risky follow-up of international referents in content and in the way to make photography.

JP: For decades, Chile has been a laboratory of artistic, political, economic and social experiments. As this is recognized, we will be freer when looking at ourselves in the images of the past and the current ones. But before that we have to leave aside the comparisons with other Latin-American cultures, assuming our reality without complexes, for this to be the starting point for the construction of that rather elusive cultural identity.

CA: Latin America has a common root in its genesis and social movements. Well: we belong to that root and the “branches along which what is Latin American circulates” also sprouts in our history. But, we do have to recognize that our photographic history, and therefore, our identification with the means, is being built and

de la visibilidad un asunto más transversal han sido resultado de la autogestión. En lo ético, siento que el proceso de circulación debiera ser más rizomático, pero está el problema de lo institucional versus lo marginal, relación dependiente que las autodefine como tales: no puede haber una sin la otra. Pero ambas tienen un poder especial de acción, desde su propio campo. Por ejemplo, la marginalidad puede utilizar la institución o lo académico para, desde ella, cuestionarla libremente. La institución, desde su propio pedestal, posee un público cautivo y el apoyo de la academia para considerar o no, a lo marginal. La paradoja se crea en el momento en que lo marginal pisa terreno académico y deja de serlo.

SM: Pienso que el horizonte debe ser la descentralización ideológica, hacia una diversidad de propuestas, de pensamiento, de ideas.

pertenecemos a esa raíz y el “ramaje por donde circula lo latinoamericano” brota también en nuestra historia. Debemos reconocer, eso sí, que nuestra historia fotográfica y, por consiguiente, nuestra identidad con el medio, se está haciendo y redescubriendo a diario.

NS: El problema de la identidad es, sin duda, un aspecto de análisis de cada una de las expresiones realizadas por el ser humano. Tanto sus acciones, como el resultado concreto de éstas, van definiendo y distinguiendo a los sistemas culturales, micro o macro, que componen nuestra sociedad pasada, presente y futura. Al entender a la cámara como instrumento y a la fotografía como lenguaje ocupado por “el fotógrafo”, es claro que éste se inserta en un campo cultural que lo determina. Así, su fotografía es la expresión de “verdad” de dicho sistema cultural y no de otro.

NS: The issue of identity is, without a doubt, an analytical aspect of each of the expressions of humans. Both his/her actions, such as their concrete result, progressively define and distinguish the micro or macro cultural systems, which compose our past, present and future society. When understanding the camera as an instrument and photography as the language used by “the photographer”, it is clear that it inserts itself into a cultural field that determines it. Thus, his/her photography is the expression of a “truth” of said cultural system, and not of a different one.

AJ: ¿Qué relación pueden establecer entre la fotografía de autor y el registro documental, desde la perspectiva que toda imagen fotográfica es en sí un archivo de memoria social? ¿Están de acuerdo con esta afirmación?

CA: A relationship could be established as follows: that for every author we find a historical and social context that favors a determined time of action. To create as an author is necessarily done from a singular place, inferring identity. This makes it sociable and historical.

CI: Working at the photographic archive at the Universidad de Concepción, I have realized that the relation of photography with reality is given from (at least) two spheres: first is the field of what is photographed and of how what is photographed is linked to a certain moment in the life of the author, to a historical moment, to an aesthetic trend, a specific reality. Secondly there is the position the photographer assumes facing what is photographed. An infinite number of variables or codifications (proxemics, territorial, social, angular, compositional, set up related, of serialization or non serialization, etc.) may enter the scene. From that perspective we could affirm that almost every photographic image is a document of social memory. I say almost, understanding that social memory as the collective construction of the present.

CB: There is a kind of convention in the act of seeing what is linked to a rescue, the remembrance of something that happened, to memory. It is an interpretation of a space-time in which the photographed object is the moment and any idea sees itself submitted to it. Not so in authorial photography, in which there is a

CA: Una relación podría establecerse de la siguiente manera: que por cada autor encontramos un contexto histórico y cultural que propicia un determinado tiempo de acción. Crear como autor necesariamente se hace desde un lugar singular, infiriendo identidad. Eso lo hace sociable e histórico.

CI: Trabajando en el Archivo Fotográfico de la Universidad de Concepción, me he dado cuenta de que la relación de la fotografía con la realidad se da desde (al menos) dos ámbitos: el primero es el ámbito de lo fotografiado y de cómo aquello que es fotografiado se vincula a un cierto momento de la vida del autor, a un momento histórico, a una tendencia estética, a una realidad específica. El segundo ámbito es la postura que el fotógrafo asume frente a lo fotografiado. Aquí pueden entrar en juego infinidad de variables o codificaciones (proxémicas, territoriales, sociales, angulares, de composición, de montaje, de serialización o no serialización, etc.).

Desde esa perspectiva, podríamos afirmar que casi toda imagen fotográfica es un archivo de memoria social. Digo casi, entendiendo la memoria social como la construcción colectiva del presente.

AJ: What kind of relationship can you establish between authorial photography and the documentary registry, from the perspective that every image is in itself an document of social memory? Do you agree with this statement?

AJ: ¿Qué piensan si les digo fotografía y realidad?

CI: Ambivalencia.

FM: Existe fotografía para lo cotidiano, para lo

vision that is not agreed, which is categorically autocratic, because it has an idea as its origin, and the photographic object is therefore submitted to it. Now, from the perspective of social memory, both conform patrimony, and I believe the most important relation there can be between both approaches is that as that, they are history, and therefore, agents of change in one way or another.

FM: I do not agree with every photograph being a document of social memory in itself, because photography has ways of production that can transform the image and create a fictionalized reality, to the point where it would be forced to look for a documentary value, or one of a particular memory, in a piece of a clearly artistic intention.

JP: It is fitting to point out that there is no sense at all in continue to defend or separating these two approaches that for a long time were restrictive (authorial photography versus documentary registry). Because I do not think there is a completely objective image for the documentary photographer. From the instant of the shot itself, the photographer-author sees him/herself forced to take a series of technical choices. The capture of the image is markedly subjective and partial; the photographer confronts the model taking sides. Furthermore, I do not believe the artist should constitute him/herself in a kind of operator of social arbitrariness.

NS: I insist on the idea that the photographic camera is an instrument used to “speak” about some personal judgment of the world, due to which photography is the language with which he/she tries to communicate that idea with a better or lesser dominion. In this way I could say that all photography aspires to transcend what is merely documentary, in order to be understood in a more symbolic way, proper of a discursive language in which some kind of truth or falsehood is contained.

AJ: What do you think of if I say photography and reality?

CI: Ambivalence.

FM: There is photography for what is everyday, superfluous, documentary, to communicate reality in one way or another, even subverting it. Now, we would have to ask with which of all

CB: Hay una suerte de convención en el acto de ver qué está vinculado al rescate, al recuerdo de algo que sucedió, a la memoria. Es una interpretación de un espacio-tiempo donde el objeto fotográfico es el momento y cualquier idea se ve sometida a ella. No así en la fotografía de autor, donde existe una visión que no es consensuada, es categóricamente autocrática, porque posee como origen una idea y el objeto fotográfico está, por tanto, sometido a ella. Ahora, desde la perspectiva de la memoria social, ambas conforman patrimonio y creo que la más importante relación que puede haber entre ambas aproximaciones es que son historia y, por consiguiente, agentes de cambio, de una u otra manera.

FM: No estoy de acuerdo en eso que toda foto es en sí un archivo de memoria social, porque la fotografía tiene formas de producción que pueden transformar la imagen y crear una realidad ficcionada, a tal punto que sería forzado buscarle un valor documental o de memoria particular a una pieza de intención netamente artística.

JP: Es pertinente mencionar que no tiene sentido alguno seguir defendiendo o separando estas dos posturas que durante bastante tiempo fueron restrictivas (fotografía de autor versus registro documental). Porque para el fotógrafo documental no creo que exista ninguna imagen completamente objetiva. Desde el instante mismo del disparo, el fotógrafo-autor se ve forzado a hacer una serie de elecciones técnicas. La captura de la imagen es marcadamente subjetiva y parcial; el fotógrafo se enfrenta al modelo tomando partido. Es más, no creo que el artista deba constituirse en una especie de operador de arbitrariedades sociales.

NS: Insisto en la idea que la cámara fotográfica es un instrumento ocupado para “hablar” sobre algún juicio personal del mundo, por lo que la fotografía es el lenguaje con el que se trata de comunicar, con mejor o menor dominio, tal idea. Con esto podría decir que toda fotografía aspira a transcender lo meramente documental, para ser entendida de una manera más simbólica, propia de un lenguaje discursivo en donde se contiene algún tipo de verdad o falsedad.

Ahora, habría que preguntarse con cuál de todas la realidades: la propia, la cercana, la cotidiana, la periférica, la de crisis personal…

SM: La realidad está sujeta a su interpretación.

NS: La percepción de realidad es relativa dependiendo del grado de conciencia e interacción que se tenga con lo observado. Se podría decir que la fotografía aspira, en el mejor de los casos, a comunicar algún tipo de conocimiento, proporcionado por alguna verdad sustraída de una experiencia directa con el mundo de los hechos.

CB: La fotografía como simulación de la realidad, en cuanto la representa, y como realidad, en cuanto es objeto perceptible.

AJ: Y… ¿El rectángulo en la mano?

CB: Cámara-ojo, extensión, arma de fuego, Sontag. El arma cargada: llevar la cámara en la mano como una extensión de la misma, lista para el ojo.

FM: Aquel susurro nostálgico de salir a encontrarse con la imagen; la cámara como una extensión de cariño por la soledad propia, exquisita, con un “plátano y unos panes en el bolso” (Sergio Larraín).

MM: Es como me gusta pasar la mayor parte del tiempo.

AJ: Y… ¿territorio?

SM: Sobre el territorio percibo signos, simbolismos y analogías que se relacionan con la reflexión y el proceso de interpretar el espacio, tiempo, materia y su relación con la existencia, relatividad y transformación.

CI: Vínculo.

FM: Más que lugar, espacio propio y ajeno por igual, para desterritorializar.

CA: Hablar hoy en día de territorio se ha transformado en argumento conceptual, teórico y no en una fuente donde navega lo humano.

NS: El encuadre fotográfico no compone, sino que escoge un fragmento ya compuesto de la realidad observada.

realities: one’s own, nearby, everyday, peripheral reality, reality of personal crisis…

SM: Reality is subject to its interpretation.

NS: The perception of reality is relative depending on the degree of conscience and interaction one has with what is observed. It could be said that photography aspires, in the best of cases, to communicate some knowledge, provided by some truth removed from a direct experience with the world of facts.

CB: Photography as a simulation of reality, since it represents it, and as a reality, as it is a perceivable object.

AJ: And… rectangle in hand?

CB: Camera-eye, extension, firearm, Sontag. The loaded gun: taking a camera in hand is like an extension of it, ready for the eye.

FM: That nostalgic whisper of going out to meet the image; the camera is like an extension of affection for the own loneliness, exquisite, with a “banana and some sandwiches in the bag” (Sergio Larraín).

MM: That is how I like to spend most of the time.

AJ: And… territory?

SM: On the territory I perceive signs, symbolisms and analogies which relate to reflection and the process of interpreting space, time, matter and their relation with existence, relativity and transformation.

CI: Link.

FM: More than a place, one owns, and foreign space all the same, in order to de-territorialize.

CA: To speak today of territory has turned into a conceptual, theoretical argument, and not into a fountain in which what is human navigates.

AJ: And… framing?

MM: Summary.

NS: Photographic framing does not compose, but chooses a fragment already consisting of observed reality.

CB: I think in narration, editing, in Bresson; in how the square format is so different and more comfortable compared with the rectangular one; I think of the framing of the negative in the enlarger, in the framing of the image that projects itself onto paper; in how, through the

CI: La misma cosa.

FM: Una inevitable constante, que a veces sube desde el dedo en el obturador, a la espalda; un temor y nostalgia, sobre todo cuando fotografío a los que quiero.

NS: Para mí, la fotografía congela momentos de vida.

MM: Un tema que me pena. En algún minuto quisiera verme enfrentado a esa situación.

SM: Música, percibo música, en silencio.

CA: …la fotografía vaciará sobre nosotros un sabor de dulce recuerdo.

CB: …nuestra memoria no es fija, está en constante movimiento y sin bordes. ¿Fotografía y muerte? Son la misma cosa.

AJ: Finalmente, ¿existe una fotografía chilena?

CI: No lo creo. Especialmente en un momento como éste, en el cual se importan tantas tendencias establecidas y consolidadas en el extranjero, como si el solo hecho de ser adoptadas por un chileno las volviera “propias” u “originales”. Creo más bien en búsquedas individuales que abordan temas identitarios específicos, acotados.

FM: NO.

CA: It is what is exactly just, justly exact.

SM: Second attention.

CI: Editing.

JP: The definition immediately delimits us to the way of watching the surroundings: we miss the complete visual reality. It is a drastic, nonindulging cutout.

FM: A necessary limit to contain only what is necessary.

AJ: And, photography and death?

CI: The same thing.

FM: A constant inevitability, that sometimes rises from the finger on the shutter, to the back; a fear and nostalgia, especially when I photograph my loved ones.

NS: For me, photography freezes instants of life.

MM: A subjects that haunts me. I would like to see myself facing that situation sometime.

SM: Music, I perceive music, in silence.

CA: …photography will pour a flavor of sweet memory on us.

CB: …our memory is not fixed, it is in constant movement, and borderless. Photography and death? They are the same thing.

AJ: Finally, is there a Chilean photography?

CI: I do not think so. Especially in a time as this, in which so many established and consolidated trends from abroad are imported, as if the sole fact of being adopted by a Chilean would make them “their own” or “original”. I rather believe in individual research that approach specific, annotated issues of identity.

FM: NO.

CB: Pienso en el relato, la edición, en Bresson; en cómo el formato cuadrado es tan distinto y más cómodo en comparación al rectangular; pienso en el encuadre del negativo en la ampliadora, en el encuadre de la imagen que se proyecta en el papel; en cómo con el acto de encuadrar vemos lo que queremos ver.

CA: Es lo exactamente justo, es lo justamente exacto.

SM: Segunda atención.

CI: Edición.

JP: La definición nos acota de inmediato la forma de mirar el entorno: se nos escapa la completa realidad visual. Es un recorte drástico, no complaciente.

FM: Un límite necesario para contener solamente lo necesario.

Taller-Claustro y exposiciones / Workshop-Cloister and Exhibitions El proyecto de autoedición llevado a cabo por C/CF contempló la realización de tres Talleres-Claustro: Hualqui, Quillón y Coliumo (Casa Poli). De manera de asegurar una producción individual reflexiva, en los talleres se propició la discusión necesaria para desarrollar el contenido visual de cada propuesta, dando un mayor sentido y voluntad al momento de definir la edición final. La itinerancia por un período de nueve meses (agosto 2010 – abril 2011) del producto expositivo de esta experiencia, a través de una exhibición montada en cuatro ciudades del país (Concepción, Valdivia, Santiago y Talcahuano), fue el resultado de una estrategia de visibilidad que contempló una copia adicional de exhibición y un formato más homogéneo para su transporte. Por último, se construyó un módulo transportable (EXPOSITOR) para breves muestras fotográficas del C/CF, con el propósito de insertar el lenguaje fotográfico contemporáneo dentro del espacio público.

The self-publishing project undertaken by the C/CF contemplated the execution of three workshop-cloisters: Hualqui, Quillón and Coliumo (Casa Poli). In order to assure a reflecting individual production, the workshops favored a needed discussion to develop the visual content of each proposal, assigning a greater sense and will at the moment of defining the final edition. The itinerancy over a period of nine months (August 2010-April 2011) the exhibition product of this experience, an exhibition presented in four cities (Concepción, Valdivia, Santiago and Talcahuano), was the result of a strategy of visibility that contemplated an additional exhibition copy and a more homogeneous format for its transport. Lastly, a transportable module (EXPOSITOR) was built for brief C/CF photographic exhibitions with the purpose of inserting the contemporary photographic language in the public space.

BIO C/CF El Colectivo Concepción Fotográfica nace en 2008 en Concepción. Desde entonces ha venido realizando un sinnúmero de eventos relacionados con la producción y promoción de la fotografía contemporánea. Ha participado en exposiciones a nivel nacional y ha recibido diversas invitaciones a eventos internacionales. Hoy, además de la presente publicación, C/CF se encuentra trabajando en la profesionalización de cada uno de sus integrantes en un Taller Intensivo de Técnica Fotográfica, dictado por Jorge Gronemeyer, donde recibirán capacitación en técnica avanzada, posproducción digital y conservación. Dicho taller es financiado por el programa ACCESO del Consejo Nacional de la Cultura y las Artes, Región del Biobío.

The Concepción Fotográfica collective was founded in 2008 in Concepción. Since then it has held an infinite number of events related to the production and promotion of contemporary photography. It has taken part of exhibitions on a local level and it has received diverse invitations to international events. Today, besides the current publication, the C/CF is presently working in the professionalization of each of its members in an Intensive Technical Photography Workshop dictated by Jorge Gronemeyer, where they will receive training in advanced technique, digital postproduction and preservation. The workshop is funded by the ACCESO program of the National Council for Culture and the Arts, Bío-bío region.

Carlos Avello nace en Concepción, Chile, en 1965. Inicia sus estudios de Licenciatura en la Universidad de Concepción, donde desarrolla su primer proyecto de investigación en Isla de Pascua. Posteriormente reside en Santiago, y en la Universidad Católica de Chile se perfecciona en Historia del Arte Comparada y Teoría del Color.

Luego obtiene una beca de estudios de posgrado en el Instituto Latinoamericano de Comunicación, ILCE, (México, D.F.), donde elabora un proyecto de enseñanza de la fotografía en comunidades rurales e indígenas (1995 – 1997). Se perfecciona en el Centro de la Imagen de Ciudad de México, participando en talleres, actividad que complementa realizando conferencias. Ejerce como docente en Fotografía y Medios en la Universidad Veracruzana. Desde 1994 investiga en fotografía documental y autoral realizando diversas exposiciones indivuales. Ha sido representante del Día Nacional de la Fotografía en la Región del Biobío (2007). Participa en exposiciones en Isla de Pascua, Francia, Holanda, México e Italia.

En 1995 realiza un viaje de registro fotográfico por Escocia, Gales, Inglaterra y París. Actualmente elabora un proyecto autoral de fotografía aérea sobre la ciudad de Concepción. Ha obtenido la beca Fondart y menciones de Honor en concursos nacionales.

Trabaja como fotógrafo independiente, participando en diversos muestras y talleres on line del Consejo de la Cultura y las Artes, así como de portafolios en la Bienal Fotoamérica (2008) y exposiciones colectivas nacionales en el Museo de Arte Contemporáneo de Santiago, Trienal de Chile (2009), sala de extensión Universidad del Bío-Bío, Instituto Chileno Norteamericano de Cultura, Goethe Institut, sala El Farol de Valparaíso, sala de exposiciones Universidad Católica de la Santísima Concepción. Su proyecto de autor cuestiona los límites aéreos de las ciudades y los desplazamientos en los asentamientos urbanos sobre el espacio natural.

Carlos Avello was born in Concepción, Chile in 1965. He initiated his bachelor’s degree studies at the Universidad de Concepción where he developed his first research project on Easter Island. He then moved to Santiago, and at the Universidad Católica de Chile he obtained further studies in compared art history and color theory. He then earned a postgraduate scholarship at the Instituto Latinoamericano de Comunicación, ILCE, (Mexico, F.D), where he elaborates a photography teaching project in rural and indigenous communities (19951997). He continued his studies at the Centro de la Imagen in Mexico City, participating at workshops, which he complements holding conferences. He teaches photography and media at the Universidad Veracruzana. He has researched documentary and authorial photography, as well as holding several solo exhibitions since 1994. He has been a national photography day representative for the Biobío region (2007). He has participated at exhibitions on Easter Island, France, Holland, Mexico and Italy. He went on a photographic register journey in Scotland, Wales, England and Paris in 1995. He is currently elaborating a Concepción aerial photography project. He has obtained Fondart state funding and honorable mentions at Chilean contests. He works as an independent photographer, participating at diverse online exhibitions and workshops of the council for culture and the arts, as well as for the Fotoamérica biennial portfolio (2008), and group exhibitions at the Santiago contemporary art museum, Chile triennial (2009), Universidad del Bío-Bío extension center, Instituto Chileno Norteamericano de Cultura, Goethe Institut, the Valparaíso El Farol gallery, and the Universidad Católica de la Santísima Concepción exhibition hall. His authorial project questions aerial city limits and the displacements in urban communities on the natural space.

Cristóbal Barrientos was born in Concepción, Chile in 1976. He is an audio-visual communicator (Santo Tomás, 1998). Having been a photographer from an early age, he autonomously continued his studies and later entered the Luis Poirot workshop. His theme mainly approaches the figure of the portrait in an experimental way, seeking to avoid direct identification with the photographic subject in order to deliver a generic vision of the concept and to create a discourse from what is visual, but frequently ending up in a proposal on what is intangible. “It is not within my goals to use photography as a record, as a document of something that already happened, I am not interested in showing what I see, but what I want to see. I think of the future and believe it is more urgent to transmit ideas, which remind us of what we are, what we can do with them and what we can change. In that sense, I am interested in proposing and constructing.

Photography itself is dead, all we can do now is step on its cadaver and from there, shoot ideas that, as far as possible, generate a change, maybe a new way of thinking. The only photographic beauty we have left to transmit is the effort of clarifying in what way that cadaver will save us. Photography is salvation”.

Cristóbal Barrientos nace en Concepción, Chile, en 1976. Es comunicador audiovisual (Universidad Santo Tomás, 1998). Fotógrafo desde temprana edad, profundiza sus conocimientos de forma autodidacta y después en el taller de Luis Poirot. Su temática aborda principalmente la figura del retrato de una manera experimental, buscando evitar la identificación directa con el sujeto fotográfico para entregar una visión genérica del concepto y crear un discurso a partir de lo visual, pero que frecuentemente termina en una proposición sobre lo intangible. “No está dentro de mis objetivos usar la fotografía como registro, como documento de algo que ya pasó, no me interesa mostrar lo que veo, sino lo que quiero ver. Pienso en el futuro y creo que es más urgente transmitir ideas que nos recuerden lo que somos, lo que podemos hacer con ellas y lo que podemos cambiar. En ese sentido, me interesa proponer y construir. La fotografía en sí está muerta, todo lo que podemos hacer ahora es pisar su cadáver y desde ahí disparar ideas que, en lo posible generen un cambio, quizás una nueva manera de pensar. La única belleza fotográfica que nos queda por transmitir es el esfuerzo por dilucidar de qué manera ese cadáver nos salvará. La fotografía es una tabla de salvación”.

Claudia Inostroza Morales nace en Concepción, Chile, en 1978. Vive y trabaja en Concepción.

Comunicadora audiovisual con mención de Dirección de Cine y TV (DuocUC), diplomada en Gestión Cultural (Universidad Santo Tomás) y licenciada en Artes Plásticas (Universidad de Concepción). Encargada del Área de Conservación y Documentación del Archivo Fotográfico de la Universidad de Concepción. “La fotografía posee cierta latencia mágica que se activa cuando vemos operar una cámara estenopeica, cuando nos encontramos con un buen daguerrotipo, cuando redescubrimos la tridimensionalidad de viejas estereoscopías, ya sea de frente o de contraluz, y cada vez que damos cuenta del conjuro del tiempo en una fotografía hallada accidentalmente. La magia opera transformaciones, cambios. Esa posibilidad mueve mi trabajo fotográfico”.

Claudia Inostroza Morales was born in Concepción, Chile in 1978. She lives and works in Concepción. She is an audiovisual communicator with a mention in cinema and TV direction (DuocUC), graduated as a cultural manager (UST) and in plastic arts (Universidad de Concepción). She is in charge of the preservation and documentation area of the photographic archive of the Universidad de Concepción. “Photography possesses a certain magic latency that is triggered when we see an stenopeic camera being operated, when we run into a well done daguerreotype, when we rediscover the three-dimensional character of old stereoscopies, be it front or backlight, and every time we give account of the spell of time in a photograph found accidentally. The magic operates transformations, changes. This possibility moves my photographic work”.

Fernando Melo Pardo was born in Concepción, Chile in 1964. He graduated in education with a mention in plastic arts at the Universidad de Concepción. He lives in the same city, where he also works as a professor at the plastic arts department of the university he studied at. His photographic work mainly approaches issues related to the landscape, in which he produces conditions of lighting alteration and real linear strokes which modify and generate a perceptual otherness in natural territories, mainly chosen because of their conditions of rurality in the series presented in this book. The radical and common otherness in his work is the line, projecting real fugues, dimensioning and relativizing the perception of landscape. The lighting he uses is a combination of natural conditions and electric devices. Fernando Melo Pardo nace en Concepción, Chile, en 1964. Es licenciado en Educación mención Artes Plásticas de la Universidad de Concepción. Vive en la misma ciudad, donde además se desempeña como profesor en el Departamento de Artes Plásticas de la universidad en que se formó. Su trabajo fotográfico aborda principalmente temáticas del paisaje, donde produce condiciones de alteración lumínica y trazos lineales reales que modifican y generan alteridades perceptuales en los territorios naturales, principalmente elegidos por sus condiciones de ruralidad en la serie presentada en este libro. La alteridad radical y común en su trabajo es la línea, que proyecta fugas reales, dimensionando y relativizando la percepción del paisaje. La iluminación que utiliza es una combinación de condiciones naturales y de dispositivos eléctricos. Sady Mora Gallardo nace en Lirquén, provincia de Concepción, en 1974. Tiene estudios de Diseño Gráfico, Cine y Fotografía; ha desarrollado actividades como editor independiente y profesor de fotografía.

Su trabajo visual está basado en la fotografía del paisaje, de naturaleza rural y en la relación conceptual de sus elementos, naturales y artificiales.

Un imaginario realizado a través de un enfoque fotográfico reflexivo, hacia el entorno y dimensión del territorio. En la actualidad su trabajo visualiza el paisaje como territorios metafóricos, susceptibles de devenir en escenarios esenciales, reflexivos y simbólicos. Una proyección sensorial de atmósferas solitarias que buscan reflejar una dimensión espiritual crítica a través de las esencias del paisaje. Entre sus obras figuran las performances Ecos, presentada en la Pinacoteca de la Universidad de Concepción, y Rañi Killen, Fondart 2004, presentada en la Sinfónica de Concepción. Realización de la publicación Alto Bío Bío, Imágenes Reveladas, Fondart 2007, presentada en la Feria Internacional del Libro de Santiago, La Habana y Buenos Aires. Participación autoral en la publicación del Archivo Fotográfico de la Universidad de Concepción, Reflexiones especulares, Ensayo sobre fotografía e imaginarios locales de la Región del Biobío.

Entre sus exposiciones individuales destacan la muestra Raíces y sentimiento expuesto, en el Goethe Institut de Concepción, e Imágenes del humedio (medios húmedos), Biblioteca Viva, Mall Plaza Trébol.

Entre sus exposiciones colectivas destaca 8 de Chile, Foto Galería Arcos.

Sady Mora Gallardo was born in Lirquén, Concepción province, in 1974. He has studied graphic design, cinema and photography, and has developed activities as an independent publisher and teaching photography. His visual work is based on landscape, rural nature photography and the conceptual relation of its natural and artificial elements, an imagery developed through a reflexive photographic focus towards the surroundings and dimension of territory. His work currently visualizes landscape as metaphorical territories, susceptible of becoming essential scenarios, reflexive and symbolic, a sensorial projection of solitary atmospheres seeking to reflect a critical spiritual dimension through the essences of landscape. Among his works are the “Ecos” performances, presented at the Universidad de Concepción gallery, and “Rañi Killen”, (Fondart 2004), presented at the Concepción symphonic corporation. He published “Alto Bío Bío, imágenes reveladas” (Alto Bío Bío, revealed images) (Fondart 2007), presented at the Santiago, Havanna and Buenos Aires international book fairs. As an author, he participated of “Reflexiones especulares, ensayo sobre fotografía e imaginarios locales de la region del Bío Bío” (specular reflections, an essay on local photography and imageries of the Bío Bío region), a publication of the Universidad de Concepción photographic archive. Among his individual exhibitions, “Raíces y sentimiento expuesto” (roots and exposed feeling) at the Concepción Goethe Institut, and “Imágenes del Humedio” (Images of the humedio - humid environments), Viva library, Plaza Trébol shopping mall. Among his group exhibitions, 8 de Chile (8 from Chile) at the Arcos photo gallery stand out.

Manuel Morales Requena, was born in Santiago de Chile in 1970. He is a self taught photographer and taught a 35 mm photography direction workshop with photographer Héctor Ríos in 1995, and a documentary cinema workshop at the communication and image institute of the journalism faculty of the Universidad de Chile presided by Francisco Cerda in 2003. He has lived and worked in Concepción since 2005. His beginnings as an independent photographer go back to the year 2000 at Rocinante magazine, and from there, his work extended to diverse foreign media: Aizu magazine (Basque Country), Vihreä Lanka magazine and the Tiedonataja newspaper (Finnland, 2003), Rad & Rön magazine and Latinoamerika magazine (Sweden, 2005). Among his main exhibitions are: Aella Photo Paris (2004 and 2006), the Santiago press salon (2003, 2004 and 2005, with a second place in the daily life category), “Pajonales” (scrublands), Copiapó, 2007; participation at the Chile triennial in the publication of Animita magazine; “Mis vecinos” (2009 Fondart project), Concepción; Rodrigo Rojas Denegri exhibition/ upcoming photographers prize, Estación Mapocho, 2010; Expo Shanghai, official selection for the Chile wall (May-October 2010); “Le Chili, on en parle” (Chile, we speak) exhibition, Salle Paroissiale, Paris, November 2010, “Zona Cero/ Avina y sus aliados en la reconstrucción de Chile” (ground zero/Avina and her allies in the reconstruction of Chile), digital book publication, January 2011.

Manuel Morales Requena nace en Santiago de Chile en 1970. Fotógrafo autodidacta, realiza el taller de dirección de fotografía en 35 mm junto del fotógrafo Héctor Ríos, en 1995, el taller de cine documental en el Instituto de la Comunicación e Imagen de la Facultad de Periodismo de la Universidad de Chile, a cargo de Francisco Gedda, el año 2003. Desde 2005 vive y trabaja en Concepción. Sus inicios como fotógrafo independiente comienzan el año 2000 en revista Rocinante, y desde ahí su trabajo se extiende a diversos medios extranjeros: revista Aizu (País Vasco), revista Vihreä Lanka y diario Tiedonantaja (Finlandia, 2003), revista Rad & Rön y revista Latinoamerika (Suecia, 2005). Jorge Pasmiño Yáñez, nace en Traiguén, Chile, en 1953. Es licenciado en Artes, mención Pintura, Escuela de Artes, Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile. Profesor de Artes Plásticas en la misma universidad. Fue alumno de José Balmes y Gonzalo Cienfuegos. Estudios de maestría en Artes Visuales, UNAM, México, D.F. Inicialmente, el artista Enrique Eiler influyó en su trabajo e interés por la fotografía.

Actualmente es docente en la Universidad de Concepción. Su trabajo visual es una mirada que intenta capturar el instante de un modelo natural violentado y transformado por el siniestro.

O por causas naturales, como los devastadores acontecimientos del terremoto y tsunami del 27 de febrero. Jorge Pasmiño Yáñez was born in Traiguén, Chile in 1953. He is an art graduate with a mention in painting of the Universidad Católica de Chile art school, where he is a plastic arts professor. He studied with José Balmes and Gonzalo Cienfuegos. He obtained a master’s degree in visual arts at the UNAM, Mexico F.D. Artist Enrique Eiler initially influenced his work and interest in photography. He currently teaches at the Universidad de Concepción. His visual work is a perspective trying to capture the instant of a violated natural model transformed by catastrophes, or by natural causes, such as the devastating events of the earthquake and tsunami on February 27. Individual exhibitions: photographic production, “Efecto colateral“ (collateral effect), Borges cultural center, Buenos Aires, Argentina, 2009; Artistas del acero hall, Universidad de Concepción gallery, Concepción, 2008. He had previously held individual painting exhibitions in Temuco, 2000, Concepción, 1999, Puerto Varas, 1999, Bochum, Germany, 1999, and Santiago, 1992. He has been selected at international painting group exhibitions. Latest group exhibitions: “Ejercicios de colección: identidad y territorio” (exercises of collecting: identity and territory) collective project, Universidad de Concepción art gallery, sponsored by the national fine arts museum.

Nicolás Sáez Gutierrez was born in Concepción in 1973. He is an architect of the Universidad del Bío-Bío and has a master’s degree in project didactics from the same university. He lives in Concepción and has worked as an extension coordinator at the UBB architecture school since 2007, he has been the art and design director at Arquitecturas del sur (architectures of the south) magazine published by the UBB architecture, construction and design faculty since, he has taught the entry level architecture workshop since, and coordinates the architectural expansion subject at UBB. His work researches “human inhabitation” aiming at representing the relation and tension between cities and citizens.

Among his relevant individual exhibitions are “Sobrebaldosas, vision y revision” (over-tiles, vision and revision) (Fondart 2009), Marta Colvin hall, Chillán, 2010, Artistas del acero and Andes halls, Concepción, 2009, and “(FaS) Fotografía superficial” (FaS superficial photography) (Fondart 2007), UBB hall, Concepción, 2007. His group exhibitions include “Fuera de lugar” (out of place) with the “MARca” (a play on sea –“mar” and “marca”-brand) series, Santiago national fine arts museum, 2010-2011, “Museo 8”, with a part of the “Pieza propia” (ones own room) series, Ch.ACO contemporary art fair, Santiago, 2010; “Qué queda cuando el agua se va” (what remains when the water recedes), UBB hall, 2008.

He was included in the book Contemporary Chilean Photography 02/CNCA 2010, and his work has been exhibited at the Musée de l’Élysée photography mueum, Lausanne, Switzerland (June, 2010) and at the Photoquai biennial in Paris (September 2010).

Nicolás Sáez Gutiérrez nace en Concepción, Chile, en 1973. Es arquitecto de la Universidad del Bío-Bío y magíster en Didáctica Proyectual de la misma universidad. Vive y trabaja en Concepción desempeñándose como coordinador de Extensión de la Escuela de Arquitectura UBB; director de arte y diseño de la revista Arquitecturas del Sur de la Facultad de Arquitectura, Construcción y Diseño UBB; es profesor de taller de arquitectura inicial y coordinador del ramo Expresión Arquitectónica en la UBB. Su obra indaga sobre el “habitar humano”, intentando representar la relación y tensión presente entre la ciudad y el ciudadano. Entre sus exposiciones individuales destacan Sobrebaldosas, visión y revisión (Fondart 2009) en Sala Marta Colvin, Chillán, 2010; Sala Artistas del Acero y Sala Andes en Concepción, 2009; (FaS) Fotografía superficial (Fondart 2007) en Sala UBB, Concepción, 2007. Entre sus exposiciones colectivas destacan Fuera de lugar con la serie MARca, Museo Nacional de Bellas Artes, Santiago 2010-2011; Museo 8, con parte de la serie Pieza propia, Feria Ch.ACO, Santiago, 2010; Qué queda cuando el agua se va, Sala UBB, 2008. Colaboradores / Collaborators RITA FERRER es periodista, editora, traductora y ensayista. Sus textos han sido publicados en monografías, catálogos de artistas y en revistas especializadas de circulación nacional e internacional. En 2002 publica Yo, fotografía, libro que establece vínculos entre melancolía, mujer, fotografía, memoria e histeria. Y en 2010, ¿Quién es el autor de esto? Fotografía y performance, producto de la adjudicación de un Fondart. Actualmente es profesora del Taller de Teoría en la Escuela de Fotografía Profesional del Instituto Arcos y de Fotografía profesional IV en la Escuela de Artes Visuales y Fotografía.

ANDREA JÖSCH es fotógrafa, gestora del colectivo La Nave (1998/2003) y Ojozurdo (2003/2009), curadora de galería AFA (2005/20008). Actualmente directora de la carrera de Artes Visuales de la Universidad UNIACC (2006-2011). Directora de la Sociedad Chilena de Fotografía (2005/2007,2009/2011). Ha obtenido en cuatro ocasiones la Beca a la Creación Fondart y en 2004 la beca Fundación Andes. Realizó residencias artísticas para el proyecto de Escuelas Artísticas del Ministerio de Educación como en el Museo de Arte Moderno de Chiloé.

Ha participado desde 1994 en muestras colectivas e individuales, tanto en Chile como en el extranjero, y realizado publicaciones sobre fotografía chilena contemporánea. Editora en jefe de la revista sudamericana Sueño de la razón.

MARÍA AMANDA SALDÍAS es licenciada en Humanidades mención Lengua y Literatura Hispánica, de la Universidad de Chile. Master of Arts in Spanish, grado obtenido en The University of Iowa, Estados Unidos.

Actualmente es candidata a doctora en Literatura Latinoamericana de la Universidad de Concepción.

Entre otros trabajos realizados, ha colaborado como editora de textos con el Archivo Fotográfico de la Universidad de Concepción. En marzo de 2011 un trabajo suyo fue incluido en el libro Guardo el signo y agradezco. Aproximaciones críticas a la obra de Gabriela Mistral, publicado por el sello editorial de la Universidad de Concepción.

TALLER GRONEFOT se especializa en impresión fina digital (fine art). El servicio personalizado del taller está dirigido a fotógrafos, artistas visuales y profesionales que requieran imágenes fotográficas de alta calidad y permanencia. Gronefot es creado en Santiago de Chile en el año 2009 por los artistas y fotógrafos Jorge Gronemeyer y Mónica Nyrar.

PABLO MEZA es Arquitecto de la Universidad del Bío-Bío, Concepción. Trabaja de manera independiente desde 2008, realizando proyectos de arquitectura, diseño de aplicaciones web y páginas web. Actualmente se desempeña como socio de M+ Arquitectos Asociados (Socio fundador, 2010); además tiene activa participación en el Colegio de Arquitectos de Chile A.G., delegación Concepción y en la Organización Biobioproyecta, a través del voluntariado en apoyo a las víctimas del terremoto del 27 de febrero en la provincia de Concepción.

ALEJANDRO BUSTAMANTE es diseñador industrial Universidad del Bío-Bío, Concepción. Como diseñador ha trabajado en diversos proyectos relacionados con mobiliario urbano. Entre los más recientes el diseño de mobiliario para la remodelación del eje Gran Bretaña para la comuna de Hualpén. También diseñó los estacionamientos para bicicletas del sistema Bio-Bici octava región. Relacionado al presente proyecto diseña con anterioridad el contenedor para exposición itinerante Sobrebaldosas de Nicolás Sáez. Docente de la carrera de Diseño Industrial UBB.

Cristóbal Barrientos: agradezco profundamente a mi padre, que es el culpable de haberme iniciado en la fotografía; su apoyo incondicional y formación visual ha sido imprescindible en mi desarrollo como persona y como fotógrafo. Las obras expuestas transitan por propuestas tan diversas como el foto-reportaje, el paisaje como territorio en constante tensión por su dualidad natural-cultural, el retrato y su alteración perceptual de pertenencia e identidad y los espacios del habitar, su construcción y destrucción, como un inevitable destino penquista.
