Interview with David McKee We know that Elmer began in 1968 which was when you were living in Putney – was it anything in Putney that inspired Elmer?

Stories are in the air, and writers can just pick them up – there must have been something special as I picked up the Elmer story and wrote it whilst I was in Putney!

What is your favourite memory of Putney?

I had a lot of good times in and around Putney, creating some of my favourite work there.

Have you visited Putney recently?

Award winning Author David McKee lived in Putney.

Not too recently, I’ve been away through lockdown and the pandemic, I hope lots of people can see the trail though and enjoy the Christmas activities.

David McKee has recently won the prestigious BookTrust Lifetime Achievement Award, becoming the seventh creator to do so, as well as being named Illustrator of the Year at the British Book Awards this year. David, who has a career that spans over 60 years, is known for creating beloved children’s classics including Elmer, Mr Benn and Not Now, Bernard – stories that are still beloved by young people today.

We have a super Waterstones inside Putney Exchange Shopping Centre with a café and large children’s book section where you can buy all of David McKee’s books.

David lived in Putney in the sixties and seventies. The character Mr Benn lived on Festive Road which inspired David when he lived on Festing Road. Positively Putney are very excited to have partnered with David’s beloved character Elmer the Patchwork Elephant this year for our Christmas trail.

In such a strange year, we feel that the colourful Elmer character will brighten up Putney town centre. We asked David some questions about his time in Putney.

Gingerbread People Cookies ingredients:

1tbsp ground ginger

545g plain flour

1 heaped tsp ground nutmeg

1tsp baking powder

1 heaped tsp ground cloves

Icing ingredients:

½ tsp salt

360g butter, softened

125g icing sugar

1½ tsp cinnamon

545g soft brown sugar

25g water

2 medium eggs

Method: 1. Melt the butter and allow to cool 2. Meanwhile, sift the dry ingredients together in a large bowl 3. Cream the cooled butter together with the sugar and gradually add the beaten eggs. You can do this by hand or with an electric beater 4. Mix the wet ingredients with the dry until fully combined and you have a dough 5. Cling film the dough and refrigerate for an hour 6. Preheat the oven to 180°c 7. Line 2 trays with baking paper 8. Roll out your dough to the thickness of a £1 coin

9. Using a cookie cutter, carefully cut out your gingerbread people and place onto your prepared trays, leaving an inch between each person
