FASHION STORE ABSTRACT

VIRGIL ABLOH Virgil Abloh - born on September 30, 1980, in Rockford, Illinois, to Ghanaian immigrant parents. His mother was a seamstress and his father was a manager in a paint company. Abloh was raised in Rockford, where he attended Boylan Catholic High School, graduating in 1998. He graduated from the University of Wisconsin–Madison in 2002 with a Bachelor of Science degree in civil engineering. He received his Master of Architecture at the Illinois Institute of Technology in 2006 while working for Kanye West at DONDA. He now designs for Off-White, Louis Vuitton, Ikea, Levi, Rimowa and a plethora of fashion and design brands.

- High Contrast - Light on top of Heavy - Strong Diagonals - Grid Pattern

Abloh contrasts the dogmatic rules of high-end fashion that is often left up for interpretation. He tells the audience what is being presented and uses irony and satire as running themes for his brands. Also, his transcendence from streetwear designer to major luxury fashion brands furthers the arguments of streetwear and street aesthetic belong in the same conversation as high art and high fashion. By presenting words as citations, Abloh is taking them out of context, and questioning their seriousness. When he puts “Sculpture” on the side of a handbag, he’s provoking the viewer. What’s the difference between a handbag and a piece of art, really?

Abloh uses a consistent diagonal lines pattern in his screenprinted designs. The designer also consistently uses a series of rectangles and squares to maintain orthagonal properties and organize his designs with boundaries. The simplicity of the above ground forms draws the essence of the designer’s work. With the underlying themes being more than what they appear, and referencing the idea of juxtaposing - Designs drawing inspiration things that are very similar but very much alike. from everyday urban environments such as crosswalks and caution tape
