On completing his Honours Degree, a veritable odyssey unfolded for Mark when he won a scholarship to India and, aged only 22, was honoured with the commission of a lifetime. He was tasked to create a richly bejewelled crown set with 25,000 diamonds. Before he could start the project, destined for the idol of the Hindu Temple, Tirupati, he had to be blessed by the High Priests of Tirupati. The blessing was performed with Mark dressed in a ceremonial cloak previously worn by Mahatma Gandhi. His career continued in jewellery when, on returning to the UK, he established the world’s first specialist diamond and jewellery consultancy (Grant Walker from 1984 -2000) Grant Walker offered bespoke innovation and technical project solution to international diamond and jewellery brands, including De Beers, World Gold Council, Dunhill, Wedgwood and Links of London. He was also a leading diamond and jewellery consultant to government and jewellery associations around the world including India, SriLanka, Brazil and Hong Kong. Mark’s passion for diamonds continued as he then spent the best part of 10 years as a Director of H. Goldie & Company, a Diamond Trading Company (DTC) diamond broker for more than 125 years. He was responsible for advising and business building, for several of the world’s leading diamond manufacturers, all with a collective turnover of more than £2 billion. But the true enthusiasm of the soft spoken aesthete becomes evident as Mark becomes animated and erudite when surrounded by the superb jewellery he both designs and markets. His exceptional depth of knowledge and passion for detail become the driving force which transforms him into the creative genius responsible for so many iconic design triumphs. His journey continues with his exciting new commissions to create collections, both in his own name and for luxury jewellery brands.
