Arson in Lynn Lake

The Lynn Lake volunteer fire crew has had a busy summer, with the majority of the fires as suspected arson from the local youth. “[The fire crew] had 15 to 16 estimated fires by youth,” Fire Chief Mark Reimer said.

“And that is just since the start of summer.”

The most recent fire has also been the most dangerous, said members of the fire crew. Over the summer there have been several abandoned houses and derelict garages burnt but on Aug. 16 an active garage burnt down. The fire crew received the call at 4:04 a.m., with the garage engulfed with flames by the time the crew arrived to the scene. The volunteer fire fighters also had another surprise when they entered the fire hall and there were three youth inside the building.

“It was crazy – we opened the doors and there were three kids running around,” said volunteer firefighter Austin Hunt. Hunt said the youth were between the ages of 6 – 15 years old. “One kid was just little and there was one who was definitely older – I [secured] the older one before I re-

sponded to the fire,” Hunt said. Fire Chief Reimer stayed behind to watch the youth and wait for the RCMP, while approximately 7 or 8 volunteer crew members responded to the fire. Neighbour Stella Dulewich said she woke up around 4 a.m. to the noise of someone hitting the side of her house when she realized she smelt smoke. “I saw my neighbors garage caught fire and was worried [the flames] would jump to his house or mine,” Dulewich said. Hunt said the house owner was lucky the fire did not reach the house.

As the fire crew got the fire under control, volunteer firefighter Khaled Manna went into the garage checking for hot spots, yelling out to ask if certain materials were explosive.

Being a full and functional garage, “there [was] potential for explosive materials,” Reimer said.

As of now, no charges have been laid, said Sergeant Kyle McFadyen.

“We have the belief that some [fires] were intentionally set – [but] so far there has been no one charged,” said Sergeant Kyle McFadyen. “Our investigations are ongoing. As of now we do not have enough hard

volved.” After the most recent fire, the Town of Lynn Lake Facebook page published a post that said the Lynn Lake

RCMP are “supportive of re-establishing a Citizen Patrol program,” offering the provision of communication equipment

and training for community volunteers. Any interested individuals are asked to contact the Lynn Lake RCMP.

Search being held for missing Leaf Rapids man

Johnny Merasty has been missing since Aug. 7, and his family is now asking for the help of the public to find the man.

The 88-year-old Leaf Rapids Man is known in the community to go on

walks, but not for this length. Members of the community have started ground searches, and a Facebook page called “Please help us find out loved one Johnny Merasty” states they’re always looking for more volunteers.

A go fund me account

has been set up, and as of Aug. 26 $330 has been raised. The money will go towards searching methods like search dogs, helicopters, or to hire groups to help ground searches.

“If we do not find our dad alive and well the funds will go towards helping

family members go to the funeral. I pray that this does not happen,” the page stated.

Merasty is described as five foot seven inches tall, and is around 130 pounds. RCMP is also investigating the disappearance.

It’s construction season in Thompson, and that construction involves the creation of the second Thompson Co-op bas bar, which is being constructed on Thompson Drive, and Lynx Crescent.

Marty Sanders, president of the Co-op gas bar says this is a result of talks that took place for three or four years. “We contacted Federated Co-operatives Limited (FCL) in Winnipeg, and what they did, they did a feasibility study as

Raymond, (41), passed away suddenly in the early morning hours on Monday August 16, 2015, in Thompson, Manitoba. Cremation recently took place in Winnipeg, Manitoba and a small service will be held locally, at a later date, for family and friends before being sent home to Kitamaat Village, BC, where he will be laid to rest. Ray was predeceased by his parents, Harry and Ethel Studley (Nyce) and survived by his siblings, Clarence Nyce, Constance Everitt, Yvonne Studley, Debra Hitch and Harry Studley, as well as by his son, Mathew Wilson and his daughter, Ashley Studley.

The Thompson Chamber of Commerce has released another survey completed by members on Aug. 25.

This survey focused on tourism in Thompson, with 37 responses or 32.5 per cent, which is up from the last survey, which saw a response rate of 30 per cent.

The nine-question survey started with if Thompson should be promoted at the different transportation hubs. 100 per cent stated yes for the airport, 97.3 per cent said yes for the train station, 83.3 per cent

Sanders noted that construction will continue when the weather takes a turn, since the construction company will complete the underground work first, and the above ground work can happen in any temperature. “It doesn’t matter what the weather is because what you do, you put plastic around the building to keep the heat in.”

Although neither Itson nor Sanders could comment on the price tag of this endeavor they both say it’s needed, and will be well used because of the good customers, and the hard working employees they have.

Itson hopes to have the second gas bar open by February, and says there will be up to 16 new job opportunities with the opening.

94.4 per cent of responders said that there should be Thompson displays at these transportation hubs as well. A note from different people said there should be displays also at the Winnipeg airport, bus depot, and train station.

The note also included the need to advertise in Churchill, but in a way that’s cost effective, low maintenance, and would not see vandalism.

Another questioned the need for businesses to promote their services at the transportation hubs, and 97.1 per cent agreed saying this should happen.

One responder explained however that promotional areas must be kept in good condition for this to work.

When asked how Thompson is currently doing in the tourism and promotional department 40.6 per cent stated ‘just okay’, 24.4 per cent said ‘poor’, 24.3 per cent said

‘average’, and 10.8 per cent said ‘good, but could do better.’ No one marked ‘excellent.’

The sixth question was around who is responsible for restocking brochures.

21 per cent said City of Thompson, 18.8 per cent said Thompson Unlimited, 18.8 per cent stated Chamber of Commerce, and 3 per cent said North Central Development. The biggest percentage stated that Tourism North should be in charge, noted 37.5 per cent of respondents.

Comments were included in this question, saying business owners should hold responsibility, or a combination of all, spearheaded by the City of Thompson. Another responder said whoever can do it most cost efficiently should do it, and if the Chamber of Commerce does it, they’d know it would get completed.

The final two questions focused around whom should fund promotional

displays, and other ideas for the city to use as promotional material. 66.7 per cent said the City of Thompson should be in charge, while 58.3 per cent said Tourism North.

In third was Thompson Unlimited with 38.9 per cent of votes, with a one note saying that Thompson Unlimited is the city’s economic tourism generator, but needs guidance.

Other suggestions included free promotional material, downloadable material or free app, wall map of Thompson and street map, information desk, and coupons and discount shopping. Others commented on the need for point of interest brochures, tour buses or ambassadors to meet the train, and a local tourism committee funded by the accommodation tax.

Members of the executive board are to meet and discuss the focus of the next monthly survey in the near future.

The Town of Snow Lake, wins Manitobaville

The community of Snow Lake beat out nine other challengers to become the 2015 version of Manitobaville. Voting in the contest closed on August 21st and the winner was announced on the morning of August 24th on CTV’s ‘Morning Live’.

Hosts Eleanor Coopsammy and Kris Laudien noted that the community ran away with the contest, garnering 20% of the votes.

With the win, the community’s Beach Enhancement Committee (BEC) will receive a cheque in the amount of $25,000 that will be coupled with other funds they have raised and will be used to make crucial improvements such areas as drainage, play structures, and a dock at the town’s Sunset Bay Beach.

Snow Lake’s Mayor and BEC member Kim Stephen stated that she and her family were likely responsible for a good portion of the close to 1600 votes Snow Lake received. She

also noted that the support from other northern communities, made her proud. There were around 8000 votes in total cast for the various entrants.

Stephen said she was listening intently to her TV Monday morning when the winner was announced. She was happy beyond belief when they called her town’s name. “They did a drum roll and they said Snow Lake is the winner, and I was just running around and I couldn’t believe it.�

BEC member Deva Andrechuk advises that she was wide awake in bed waiting for the call when her phone started ringing at 7:45 that morning‌ the smile hasn’t left her face since. Both women, along with four others on their committee, have been instrumental in revitalizing the Sunset Bay Beach area.

On Aug. 6 a public safety meeting was held at city hall in Thompson to discuss one resident’s concerns with illegal use of ATV’s and off road vehicles in residential areas.

Peter Frigo, who lives on Smith Crescent, says that everyday he sees riders illegally driving down the road, and on paths not designed for ATV use. His greatest fear is that a young resident will be hurt.

Frigo handed out a list of 11 different solutions in his mind that could happen, and collectively four solutions were ďŹ nalized by the end of the meeting.

The four areas of resolution include more education surrounding ATV use in Thompson, and where’s is legal and where it’s not to drive them, signage needs to be improved in areas, enforcement needs to strengthen, and the bylaw needs to be looked at.

Brooke Davies may be relatively new to the community; however, she is no novice when it comes to drama. Having recently observed her talents in the role of Kate Rice, it is obvious she has a knack for the art and a sound grasp on her subject.

Davies is the third actress to reprise the role of ‘Grand Lady of the Lake’; Cheyanne Tandy and Annette Lamontagne being the others. Ms. Davies will bring the play to a close at month’s end and is scheduled to play the part in all enactments to that point.

Close to 40 people were on hand to witness her performance on the afternoon of Saturday, August 15th and all left with a better grasp on the life and times of Rice, and a strong appreciation of Davies talents and the fine work of the Aurora Borealis Arts Council.

Davies, dressed in a bush shirt, boots, and socks, began her portrayal with an off book soliloquy, before settling into the set and reading from the scripted journal. She started where the seed of adventure was planted for Rice… with her father. “My Dad shared with me the stories of Daniel Boone and Kit Carson and told me it didn’t matter that I was a young, pretty blond girl and not a rugged outdoorsman,” said the actress. “My Dad taught me that dreams can always come true, but only if you make them happen through your own hard work.”

Kate Rice did bring those childhood dreams to fruition and as Davies carried on with journal entries, it became apparent that Rice’s life was one that few ‘city born’ men of the period could relate to… even fewer women. In the early 1900’s, she traveled two provinces away from her southern Ontario home

However, this wasn’t enough for Miss Rice’s inquisitive mind and adventurous spirit. She journeyed to Manitoba’s northern bush country; settling first in the frontier town of Le Pas, before striking out for gold fields on the eastern shores of Wekusko Lake.

Once there, she met and worked ‘beside’ many men of the area’s storied past; the likes of Billy Todd, Charlie Krug, Julius Campbell, Mike Hackett and John Dion. But there was only one man she felt worthy enough to work ‘with’…

So began their partnership.

Kate and Dick threw their lots in together and plied the prospecting trade with expeditions throughout the area; they even formalized it with a written agreement that Ms. Davies read for the audience. Their work helped them eke out a living, but more than that, their work (and that of others) brought further commerce and numerous companies to the area. One property on Rice Island garnered the interest of the corporate forerunner of Vale (Inco).

Rumour has it, Rice and Woosey turned down an offer of $250,000 from the International Nickel Company (INCO) for the Rice Island property and interests.

The couple’s partnership ended in 1940, upon the death of Woosey in Le Pas. Kate carried on

with her work, but became increasingly eccentric. After a short stay in Brandon, Manitoba, she moved in 1960 to a Minnedosa, Manitoba nursing home and passed away three years later.

She was interred in that community’s cemetery in January of 1963.

Speaking with Ms. Davies after her monologue, she provided some of her own background; noting her attendance at a performing arts high school as a youth and being a recipient of awards for acting in three of her four years at the school.

“After that, I took a drama qualification, in Toronto, for teaching drama to elementary school students,” said Davies. “And for three years in the Kingston (Ontario) area, I taught drama from Kindergarten to Grade 8.”

In respect to her interest in Kate Rice’s achievements, Davies, 27, said that even though they were basically from the same area of Ontario, she’d never heard of the lady. However, while at work in the local bank one day, Phyllis Verbeek, knowing her background in drama, approached her and asked if she would be interested in playing the part of the heroine, Rice. “I said, ‘oh, I would love to perform, but who’s Kate Rice? ’” Verbeek passed on snippets of Rice’s story and from there Davies researched the local pioneer. “The thing I find interesting about her is that we do share some commonalities; like the fact that she moved to the north from Ontario, and that she was a teacher who

decided that she really didn’t want to teach anymore, which is kind of where I’m at recently.” said Davies. “That is part of what brought me to northern Manitoba. I just found all these similarities with her and really started to connect.”

The actress admits that people have varying perceptions of Rice and how her story has been told.

“Some people think there have been exaggerations; others think things haven’t been exaggerated enough,” Davies confided. “But I think that’s what makes her so interesting and it creates a lot of discussion around her as a person and about what she’s accomplished.”

In respect to three separate actresses playing the same part, Davies states that this has offered a unique opportunity. “Phyllis wrote the original script and said we could change it up however we wanted,” she explained. “The first performance I did was quite different from this one. I sort of set it up in journal format, but after Annette (Lamontagne) performed, I heard some great feedback about her performance and some great feedback for mine, so I decided to meld the two scripts together.

That’s what’s great about performing every Saturday… we can change it up a little.”

The Aurora Borealis Arts Council’s production of the Kate Rice Story takes place every Saturday afternoon at 1:00 p.m. (for the remainder of August) in the Snow Lake Motor Inn Beverage Room.

In the beautiful words of the psalmist— “The eyes of all wait upon Thee; And Thou givest them their meat in due season.

Thou openest Thine hand, And satisfiest the desire of every living thing.”

God made man perfectly holy and happy; and the fair earth, as it came from the Creator’s hand, bore no blight of decay or shadow of the curse. It is transgression of God’s law—the law of love— that has brought woe and death. Yet even amid the suffering that results from sin, God’s love is revealed. It is written that God cursed the ground for man’s sake. Genesis 3:17. The thorn and the thistle—the difficulties and trials that make his life one of toil and care— were appointed for his good as a part of the training needful in God’s plan for his uplifting from the ruin and degradation that sin has wrought. 10] world, though fallen, is not all sorrow and misery. In nature itself are messages of hope and comfort. There are flowers upon the thistles, and the thorns are covered with

“God is love” is written upon every opening bud, upon every spire of springing grass. The lovely birds making the air vocal with their happy songs, the delicately tinted flowers in their perfection perfuming the air, the lofty trees of the forest with their rich foliage of living green—all testify to the tender, fatherly care of our God and to His desire to make His children happy.

The word of God reveals His character. He Himself has declared His infinite love and pity. When Moses prayed, “Show me

Thy glory,” the Lord answered, “I will make all My goodness pass before thee.” Exodus 33:18, 19.

This is His glory. The Lord passed before Moses, and proclaimed, “The Lord, The Lord God, merciful and gracious, long-suffering, and abundant in goodness and truth, keeping mercy for thousands, forgiving iniquity and transgression and sin.” Exodus 34:6, 7.

He is “slow to anger, and of great kindness,” “because He delighteth in mercy.” Jonah 4:2; Micah 7:18.

God has bound our hearts to Him by unnumbered tokens in heaven

and in earth. Through the things of nature, and the deepest and tenderest earthly ties that human hearts can know, He has sought to reveal Himself to us. Yet these but imperfectly represent His love.

Though all these evidences have been given, the enemy of good blinded the minds of men, so that they looked upon God with fear; they thought of [p. 11] Him as severe and unforgiving. Satan led men to conceive of God as a being whose chief attribute is stern justice,— one who is a severe judge, a harsh, exacting creditor.

He pictured the Creator as a being who is watching with jealous eye to discern the errors and mistakes of men, that He may visit judgments upon them. It was to remove this dark shadow, by revealing to the world the infinite love of God, that Jesus came to live among men.

The Son of God came

from heaven to make manifest the Father. “No man hath seen God at any time; the only begotten Son, which is in the bosom of the Father, He hath declared Him.” John 1:18. “Neither knoweth any man the Father, save the Son, and he to whomsoever the Son will reveal Him.” Matthew 11:27.

When one of the disciples made the request, “Show us the Father,” Jesus answered, “Have I been so long time with you, and yet hast thou not known Me, Philip? He that hath seen Me hath seen the Father; and how sayest thou then, Show us the Father?” John 14:8, 9.

Back-to-school tax planning: tuition, education, textbook amounts

The start of the school year is around the corner, and now is a great time to think about the tax benefits available to postsecondary students, so you can be better organized come year-end, and have all your slips ready for tax-filing season next April.

The Tuition, Education, and Textbook Amounts credit is a combo of three great tax credits in one!

Post-secondary students may claim the tuition amount, the education amount, and the amount for textbooks.

Qualifying programs

Evelyn Jacks The educational institution will issue an official receipt or Form T2202A - Tuition, Education, and Textbook Amounts Certificate showing the amount of tuition paid. Qualifying institutions in Canada include post-secondary institutions like universities or colleges or private

designated educational institutions, such as Knowledge Bureau.

Universities outside Canada. These may qualify too. They will send the student these forms as applicable: * Form TL11A – Tuition, Education, and Textbook Amounts Certificate - University Outside Canada * TL11C – Tuition, Education, and Textbook Amounts Certificate Commuter to the United States * TL11D – Tuition Fees Certificate - Educational Institutions Outside Canada for a Deemed Resident of Canada. Flying schools may send Form TL11B – Tuition Fees Certificate -

Flying School or Club.

Qualifying course duration The required study period for claiming the Tuition and Education amounts as well as qualifying to withdraw Education Assistance Payments from an RESP is 13 weeks.

However, if the student is studying abroad, that duration has been shortened to three consecutive weeks effective the 2011 tax year.

Eligible amounts Tuition fees paid in excess of $100 to each individual qualifying postsecondary institution can be claimed. This includes admission fees, charges for the use of library

or laboratory facilities, examination fees, and ancillary fees that exceed $100 including the cost of identification cards and certain prerequisite study materials.

Education amounts of $400 per month for fulltime students and $120 for part-time students are possible.

Textbook amounts claimable are $65 a month more for full time students and $20 a month more for part time students.

The student must make the claim on his or her tax return first, but if not taxable, or if the full amount is not needed, this credit may be transferred from a student to a supporting

individual. Alternatively, the student can decide not to transfer the amount and instead carry any unused amount forward to be used in future years to offset income tax payable.
