India is currently the world’s largest milk producer and contributes over 23 per cent of global milk production. Milk production in India has grown at a CAGR of 6.2 per cent - growing from 146.31 million tonnes in 2015, to 209.96 million tonnes in 2021. Dairy production has reached a value of approximately 4.2% of India’s GDP and accounted for 20% of India’s gross agricultural output. With the relentless growth in the availability of milk and milk products in the years prior, India has been the largest consumer of dairy products since 1998. The dairy industry makes up a major part of the rural economy in India and serves as an important source of work and income. Almost all the dairy items produced in India are consumed domestically with liquid milk making up most of the market. In addition to being a sound business opportunity, India’s dairy industry is a critical avenue for socio-economic development. The Government of India has consistently and regularly introduced programs and initiatives that target the continuous development of the dairy sector.
