Thanks to your generous support throughout the 2017 fiscal year, we can proudly report:

• Our bicentennial campaign, Securing a Legacy of Leadership, has exceeded its $45 million goal! More than $46 million has been raised to fund essential scholarships, new and renovated facilities, and innovative business and leadership programs. Thanks to all who have participated in this historic effort; the response has been heartwarming and inspiring.

• President’s Society membership, gifts of $1,000 or more, has been steadily climbing.

This year more than 250 donors have made that commitment. Special thanks to President’s Society Chair Jeff Johnson ’90 for his enthusiastic and thoughtful leadership.

• Over the past two years, endowed scholarship support has been remarkable. This year we added 10 new endowed scholarships for a total of 58! These scholarships are the keys to unlocking the myriad educational and professional opportunities Nichols has to offer for our students who may lack the means but not the motivation to pursue a degree.

Your continued support allows us to do what we love for the benefit of the students we serve.

Ed Donahue ’72

W

hether it was because he grew up right down the road or because he and his junior high friends used to sneak onto campus to play basketball and sandlot football or because he knew his parents could not afford to send him away to school, Ed Donahue was destined to attend Nichols College.

“It was meant to be,” he says, and the beginning of an almost 50-year relationship during which Donahue has played several roles: student, alumnus, advisor, benefactor, fundraiser, and trustee.

“Nichols College gave me a tremendous foundation for graduate school and to move forward to pursue my career,” he says. “I wanted to give back.”

While he admits he didn’t exert himself too much in high school, Donahue excelled at accounting at Nichols, graduating as the salutatorian in 1972 and later earning his CPA and an MBA in taxation at New York University.

Following a stint at Arthur Andersen, Donahue worked for a gasoline company in Springfield that owned gas stations across the Northeast and set its sights on vertical integration, including oil and gas exploration and production. This led to a 36-year career in the oil and gas industry and an eventual permanent move to Houston, Texas, where he served as CFO for TransTexas Gas Corp., Elk Resources Inc., and as senior vice president and CFO for Vitruvian Exploration LLC (formerly CDX Gas LLC).

Now semi-retired, Donahue works as a consultant, and otherwise keeps busy maintaining two beach houses (trying to sell one), playing golf (wishing he could play more), and, wisely, doing whatever “my wife wants me to do.”

Even though Texas has been his home for more than three decades, Donahue says he hasn’t “totally dug up roots from Dudley and Nichols.”

he often drove through campus, marveling at the physical changes. “I could always see what was happening on the outside, but I wanted to know more about what was happening on the inside,” he says of his decision to become involved with his alma mater.

Becoming a charter member of the Board of Advisors in 2007 gave him insight and spurred his interest to do more. In 2013, he was elected to the Board of Trustees.

Donahue has long contributed to the success of the college, as an honor student who helped organize the Massachusetts chapter of Delta Mu Delta, a volunteer leader who offers guidance on the financial health of the college, and as a generous donor who creates opportunities for students, most recently as the sponsor of an endowed scholarship for local commuters who major in accounting or finance.

This past year, he even tested his mettle as a fundraiser, for a cause near and dear to his heart. When his classmate,

Rick “Brillo” DeCrosta ’72, died in December, Donahue, Mark Alexander ’72, and Bill O’Connell ’78 led a drive to establish an endowed scholarship in his memory. “Rick and I were really good friends,” he says. “We studied and played all types of sports together.

We hit it off from our very first class together with Professor Conrad.” The effort was especially poignant for Donahue who lost three close friends within a two-year span and saw this as an opportunity to “continue Rick’s legacy” of support and service to Nichols. Their success in raising the $25,000 needed to endow the scholarship made the experience all the more rewarding for Donahue.

As a trustee and loyal alumnus, Donahue hopes Nichols continues to improve, expand as necessary and promote its reputation. Growing up in Dudley, he sensed that the community didn’t always embrace the college culture, so he’s happy to see the change in attitude.

“The town has really come around,” he says. “They realize that Nichols does contribute to the community in terms of employment and services.

The Dudley and Webster communities think highly of Nichols, and I like that. We’ve come a long way.” Maybe fate didn’t have a hand in that, but Donahue did.
