Honor Roll of Donors 2023

A Note of Thanks

Nichols College is indebted to the donors who made the 2022-2023 fund year a huge success. More than $5 million was raised to support academics, athletics, and student life, enhancing the entire collegiate experience for our aspiring leaders. Highlights of the annual campaign include an eight percent increase in donors to the President’s Society (annual gifts of $1,000 or more) as well as increases in alumni, parent, and first-time donors. The March Match surpassed last year’s total, raising $229,000, and the September blitz outscored the year before, with $150,000 to lift the bar for Bison athletics. Alumni and friends also engaged in nearly 400 volunteer opportunities, contributing more than 100 hours. This includes hosting students at work, networking, mentoring, speaking to classes, and serving on academic advisory panels. For our volunteer leaders, such as the Board of Trustees and the Board of Advisors, these activities go beyond the time they spend in meetings and on committee assignments. We are grateful to the many donors and volunteers, listed on the following pages, who support and invest in this special place on the Hill.

Long before environmental issues piqued social consciousness and dominated political agendas, Jonathan Ives was doing his part to steward natural resources, a passion he cultivated as a student at Nichols College. Ives was a member of the Forestry Program, an academic specialization at Nichols from 1954 to 1970 that combined the fields of conservation and forestry with business. In addition to his studies in wildlife management, Ives was involved in the NICON (Conservation) Club and the Woodsmen Team, which competed in a range of lumberjack skills against schools such as the University of Maine, Colby, and Dartmouth. “I enjoyed myself on the Woodsmen Team,” recalls Ives. “It helped me burn off my energy, which I’d had during my whole life.” He was on the team for four years, including two of the three years Nichols won the Northeast Intercollegiate Championship. After graduating in 1967, Ives joined the Peace Corps and was assigned to a fishing cooperative in the Pacific’s Truk Islands, improving the handling and sale of seafood. When he returned to the U.S. in 1970, he pursued a master’s degree in wildlife biology at Humboldt State University in northern California. This gave him the opportunity to study the complex ecology of the West Coast.

Over two years, Ives conducted a study of nesting species of great blue herons and great egrets in Humboldt Bay – the subject of his thesis. During that time, the California Department of Fish and Wildlife funded his project and subsequent statewide report on heron and egret nesting populations. After completing his field work. Ives and his wife, Rosemarie, moved to Sacramento, where he started at a small employee-owned environmental consulting firm, Jones & Stokes Associates, Inc. “I was a busy guy… working my day job and at night the state report, and finishing writing my thesis in off hours,” he says. Ives’ early career coincided with the passing of the federal Clean Water and Clean Air Acts in the early 1970s, which created jobs for environmental specialists, especially in the private sector. As Jones & Stokes grew, so did Ives’ responsibilities, from intern to field biologist to project manager. For a brief period in the late 1970s, the Iveses moved back to New England after the birth of their son, but in 1980 returned to the West Coast to open a branch office of Jones & Stokes in Seattle, Washington, where he worked as a project manager and principal until his retirement in 2012. The Iveses ultimately settled in Redmond, Washington – the home of Microsoft – where Rosemarie served on the City Council, and then as mayor for 16 years, an unprecedented four terms. But the couple has yet to settle down. In retirement, Jon has been assisting Nichols forestry classmate, former smokejumper and fire control officer, Tom “Troop” Emonds ’67, with his wildfire hand tool business. Rosemarie and Jon have enjoyed travels to Italy, South Africa, China, Canada, and national parks throughout the U.S. Each summer, they travel east to Block Island to spend several months at the family cottage and have frequented Nichols homecomings and Forestry Reunions. Maintaining the forestry legacy has been important to Ives, along with fellow foresters, Ron Schmitt ’65 and Jim Jackson ’69. “Some things fade away over time, but we felt very strongly about the program when we were in college and certainly after,” Ives reflects. They initiated the Forestry Fund to promote campus beautification and raised more than $250,000 to construct a plaza and rain garden next to the newest academic building. In recognition, the college named the area NICON Plaza. Inside the building’s foyer hangs a plaque that details the history of the Forestry Program to ensure their legacy lives on. Ives is also proud of his involvement with the Class of ’67 Endowed Scholarship. He was one of seven classmates to originate the scholarship in honor of their 45th reunion. To date, the scholarship, which is intended to assist a rising sophomore in support of the college’s third semester retention efforts, has raised more than $290,000. In addition, Ives generously contributes to men’s and women’s athletics, the Nichols Fund, and the Susan West Engelkemeyer Institute for Women’s Leadership, a cause fervently shared by Rosemarie.
