Dear Friends of Calverley Grounds, A Happy New Year to you. Here is my New Year request to you to become a friend of Calverley Grounds. It is only £5 per household. For those of you with internet banking you can simply transfer £5 to “Friends of Calverley Grounds" (or FoCG), at NatWest, sort code 55-70-1 3, a/c 7840291 3. Then confirm your action via email to Lisa Grant on chavassier28@yahoo.co.uk. Please include your name, street address, e-mail address and telephone number in your e-mail. If you would prefer to pay by cheque then send it, with any changes of your contact details, to Lisa at 62 Grove Hill Road, TN1 1 SP. Or you could drop it into her door, or mine at 1 3 Mountfield Gardens, TN1 1 SJ. We had 48 households as members at the end of our first year and would like to increase this in 201 4. We need your support! Why, you may well ask? Firstly, the Friends needs to be able to speak on behalf of as many households as possible so we are a credible lobbying group with TWBC and other bodies. This is particularly important when it comes to raising funds. You may have seen in the ‘Courier’ in the last couple of weeks that Grosvenor & Hilbert Park has been awarded £2.3 million from Heritage Lottery Fund and Big Lottery Fund to refurbish and revitalise their park. The Council and the Friends of G&H have been working on this application for 2 or 3 years. Part of the process requires applicants to demonstrate community involvement with the park. This can be demonstrated in a number of ways, for example: by membership numbers; participation in activities (gardening, competitions, fund raising events etc); and by the involvement of local businesses and organisations in both financial and activity terms. If we are to improve our park, for example with play equipment on a purpose built area, or building a new focal point (bandstand, water feature, etc) then the only realistic source of funding is from third parties like the Lottery. Secondly, we need your help with our small but growing number of gardening projects in the park. We are committed to adding to the work of Sodexo (TWBC contractors) and not replacing them. How can you help? Why not come along and help in person and with your family. The first activity is planned for Saturday morning 22nd March when we will be planting poppies as part of the WWI commemoration programme. On April 5th we will be working on the rose beds in front of the café as part of a longer term project. More details of both these activities later. You can see why we need you, so please become a member and encourage your friends and neighbours to join and to join in! Best wishes, Jim Chairman of Friends of Calverley Grounds
