TRENDSINSTREETWEAR
Camo clothing has always been a staple in streetwear culture due to its neutral colors and bold appearance with brands like ‘BAPE’ and ‘Realtree’ leading the wave.
All black outfits are gaining more and more traction partly due to rapper Playboi Carti and his record label “opium”. Their specific style and way of dressing was also named, ‘opium’ after their record label.
This style consists of a mix of dark, futuristic, and punk-influenced streetwear with heavy influences from high fashion, goth aesthetics, and underground rap culture.
Football jerseys are making a comeback in streetwear due to their baggy and breathable fit as well as influence from rappers such as Travis Scott and Drake who have been seen wearing vintage and modern jerseys.
Carhartt, originally made for workers has made a big impact on urban fashion in recent years.
Their rugged, heavy-duty and oversized design as well as support from hip-hop culture has lead to them becoming a staple in the streetwear community 10
Stussy arguably the most influential brand in streetwear is often credited for shaping and building the foundation of what we know as streetwear today.
Stussy still remains highly relevant in urban culture due to their cult following and highquality clothes.
The Origins of Streetwear
Born in the 1980s, streetwear emerged from a blend of urban subcultures like skateboarding and hip hop, both ofwhich are heavily rooted in rebellious behavior and nonconformity, allowing forthe perfect breeding ground for a way of dressing that isn't bound by societal expectations, allowing for the prioritization of comfort and expression.
Soulja Boy and the Rise of BAPE
In 2007, a famous rapper bythe name of Soulja Boy began going viral for his hit song “CrankThat,” which was initially released on YouTube, where it ended up being a huge success and reached 30 million views in only the firstyear of being posted In this music video, Soulja Boy is seen dressed in BAPE and even mentioning the brand in the song saying "Haters stay mad 'cause I got me some Bathing Ape."
BAPE atthe time was a big part ofthe streetwear scene as well as the rap community, but after Soulja Boy released his hit song, the brand became mainstream and a cultural sensation to younger generations who were eagerto gettheir hands on whatevertheirfavorite rapperwas wearing. Even in later songs released by Soulja Boy, he still often mentioned BAPE and even has a song called "BAPES" in which he talks about his love forthe brand Soulja Boy placed BAPE in the spotlight in front of millions of people, forever cementing its name in the streetwear community.
Artist Influence
As rap music continued to evolve, so did its role as a platform for showcasing luxury and status In recentyears, rap artists are often seen showing offtheir materialistic possessions, especiallytheir clothing. Because ofthis, their listeners are constantly bombarded with indirect promotion and influenced bytheir lyrics Even the artists themselves are almost like walking billboards, always wearing the newest clothes and the most expensive brands, which sparks desire in theirfans and creates a large demand forthese clothes/brands.
Recent examples ofthis include artists like Playboi Carti, Ken Carson, and Yeat, who managed to turn underground streetwear brands like ‘Rick Owens’, ‘Celine’, and ‘Chrome Hearts’ into cultural statements. All ittakes is one post, one lyric in a song, or even a mention in an interview, and it's sold out
Collaborations
Rappers are no longer just consumers or influencers offashion but creators of it, shaping and molding the concept offashion as they see fit More and more, rappers are collaborating with big brands like ‘Nike’ and ‘Vans’ or even designer brands like ‘Louis Vuitton’ and ‘Gucci’, bringing their artistic visions to life in the form of clothing. Kanye West and ‘Yeezy’ is a perfect example of a rapperwho left his mark on fashion and urban culture by creating his own clothing line with the help of ‘Adidas’ and sending shockwaves into the streetwear community, creating an exclusive productthat everyone wanted a piece of.
REVENGE X YoungBoy Never Broke Again collaboration
REVENGE
While many brands have collaborations with artists, there is one brand in particularthat is known for its unique and creative projects with rappers, and that brand is Revenge. Although not as popular as it once was, Revenge is still a verywellknown and respected brand with a cult-like fanbase.
Revenge gained popularity in the late 2010s after receiving support from famous rapperXXXTentacion (X), who atthe time was one ofthe fastest-growing artists, being known around the world for songs like “LookAt Me!” and “SAD!” X would always be seen wearing the brand and even collaborated with them on projects, releasing exclusive pieces that now resell for hundreds of dollars As X rapidly grew in success and fame, so did Revenge, which quickly became one ofthe most soughtafter brands, with new releases selling out in mere minutes Revenge began collaborating with other rappers, allowing each of them to puttheir own spin on the design and making each collaboration incredibly unique.
