EDITORIAL Feelings, nothing more than feelings…

We can’t remember a time that has been so intensely packed with feelings than the recent months. My goodness – one year full of uncertainty, anger, fear, sadness, loneliness, but also excitement, togetherness, compassion, quietness and even joy. When we sat down for our first editorial meeting for this seasons edition of NICHE we were not sure what we would be feeling today – from extreme happiness, over hope to complete devastation – everything was possible. Feelings. And here we are today: some of us frustrated with politics and overwhelmed with feeling powerless and others relieved, free and immune against the pandemic.

Some of the most beautiful women in the world – Cameron Diaz, Jennifer Aniston and Gwyneth Paltrow to only name a few – trust you with their makeup. How does one create that “Hollywood glow” in their own bathroom?

Before makeup application, I like to use a gentle exfoliant to get rid of any dead skin cells and then top with a hydrating moisturizer. For makeup, it’s all about layering. I love to apply highlighter under foundation. It gives the skin an ethereal glow. I’m obsessed with our new shades of Lit Up. Nectar is a warm peach and Brulee is a luminous bronze gold. Glide it onto cheeks, cheekbones, cupid’s bow and tear ducts. Next sweep, Vital Skin Foundation over any areas that need correcting. I like to use two shades to mimic the real tones of our skin, a lighter one under the eyes and t-zone and a darker one around the perimeter. For any little spots, I like to dab Vital Skin on which our Spot Check Brush. What’s the first thing on your mind when you open your eyes in the morning? More often than not it’s your mailbox, followed by an Instagram scroll, followed by a Zoom call, followed by numerous messages, followed by phone chats. Recent studies show that modern lifestyle poses significant threat to our overall health: polluted air in big cities, continuous stress and electronic deviceinduced blue light promote excessive free radical formation and oxidative stress; all of which don’t only influence our immune systems, but – as recent studies show – also our skin.

Decades ago the main source of blue light, a high-energy, short-wavelength light, was exposure to the sun, but recently (and especially during the “working from home” pandemic) screen time largely adds to the pot. Together with environmental and lifestyle stressors, blue light causes everything from brown spots and hyperpigmentation to wrinkles, loss of elasticity and premature aging.

Fight plan? Sufficient antioxidant intake, partially from food (colourful vegetables and fruits are a great choice), partially from high-quality supplements and partially by applying topical products that will help you protect your largest organ and fight those free radicals, one day at the time. Some of the most known forms of antioxidants are vitamin C, vitamin E, green tea and vitamin B3, also known as niacinamide, which is particularly skin-restorative and helps brighten the complexion, reduce redness, fight acne and shrink the pores. Some of the other – perhaps less known – antioxidants include Actinidia Polygama (also known as Silver Vine, which has been used for centuries in Asian medicine to increase moisture of the skin, inhibit melanin synthesis and protect the skin from the inside), zinc and Superoxide Dismutase, SOD, which is effectively used to fight environmental aggressors and bring the skin back into balance.

Bottom line? If you can’t get out of that Zoom meeting, or move to the Himalayas (which, let’s face it, is probably likely), get some help from your top shelf. Ten years from now you’ll be glad you did.

Let’s start at the beginning. What’s your personal interpretation of beauty?

Healthy skin is beautiful skin. Having worked in this industry for over 20 years, I am very aware that we all have different skin care needs, and this is why I carefully designed the MDO portfolio to ensure each product provides solutions to specific skincare concerns. Results and client satisfaction are extremely important to me.

I read that the goal you have when attending to your clients is for them to look like themselves, but better. Where’s the ratio between minimally invasive cosmetic treatments and plain products? To paraphrase: how much can be done with just topical products?

My goal is to bring the skin back to the desired level with professional care and carefully selected skincare products, and to keep a complexion radiant for as long as possible. AIME follows a holistic approach to beauty. What customer did you have in mind when you founded the brand? To paraphrase: who’s AIME for?

AIME is for every woman who feels like she’s tried everything but still can’t figure out how to get beautiful and healthy skin.

Having a presence on social media, I had so many women coming to me with skin issues and I knew that I wanted to help them find a solution: affordable, efficient and clean. Once you realise it really all starts inside, it changes everything. Mindset, skin, mood, you will notice the difference!

What makes AIME different when compared to other supplement brands?

I really see AIME as a skincare brand and not a supplement brand. To me our supplements are just the first step in your skincare journey. I want to help women understand how their skin/body work because I feel like for so many years, marketing and beauty brands have not been transparent about this.

Instead we’ve been told to conceal and erase, but not really treat the cause of our skin issues. You need to get to the root of the issue if you want lasting results and that’s what we do with our products. All our supplements are probiotics-based: happy gut, happy skin is our motto!

Given that you founded AIME after your own struggle with rosacea, can you please share the protocol that helped you keep it at bay?

First, what really helped me was to understand the connection between my gut and my skin. For so many years, it didn’t occur to me that what I was ingesting was having an impact on my skin. French Glow is my holy grail formula, if you

have rosacea/sensitive skin/redness you need it. Also I use a very minimal skincare routine: I don’t always wash my face in the morning, sometimes I just splash it with cold water. Then I apply our Simple Cream and use mineral foundation as it provides coverage but still lets your skin breathe. And I do LED treatments at our Glow Studio in Paris, which is truly great for any skin inflammation.

The brand’s portfolio truly addresses all aspects of beauty from the inside out. Which products are must-haves for a healthy body and glowing skin?

So hard to choose – they’re all my babies! My top three products would be Matcha Glow, it’s 10 g of marine collagen per stick so it’s amazing for bouncy, glowing skin and also benefits hair and nails. I have one every day at the office! French Glow is my personal favorite (but if you have acne, Pure Glow would be better) and finally the Simple Cream. And one more: our dry brush. I love, love, love dry brushing, it has so many amazing benefits.

What is currently on your bathroom top shelf ?

I am using all of our products religiously

so the cleanser, toner and the serums are my staple. Right now I am loving our Moonlit Meadows Moisturizer on top of our serums as I like lighter textures in the spring. And I cannot recommend The Clarifying Serum – which we are launching later this summer – enough.

I use it in combination with our Hypercharge Glass Skin Serum – the later also works as a perfect makeup base in the morning. Other than that? Kosas’ mascara and concealer and I’m good to go!
